Title: The World is Over and I Am the Only Survivor
Post by: Cramulus on April 12, 2010, 05:23:54 PM
This the output from a very bleak form of "LARP Solitaire"

http://www.scribd.com/doc/29798601/The-World-is-Over-and-I-Am-the-Only-Survivor

This is a journal I kept in 2004, when I convinced myself that the world had actually already ended, and my day to day life was just a delusion, a phantasm I had constructed to keep myself sane.

All the original text is unedited, so as to preserve the specific type of insanity I was experiencing. If I ever present this to a larger audience, I'll probably edit and retype the text.

Just to cover my ass:

That may be the closest thign I've ever heard of to functional solipsism.

Will have to read later, but great premise

:mittens:

I read it all in one sitting.

Amazing stuff. I really enjoy your writing style.

And those photocopier images are absolutely perfect compliments as well as intrinsically awesome themselves.

I think I noticed your mind becoming aware of it fooling itself a few times. There were double meanings that suggested it, but I could reading too far into them.

By the end I felt like this:

Oh right! I did read this, and also had some thoughts and ideas about it, but forgot to write them down.

The premise is really cool. So is the art. Amazing.

But, and maybe this is exactly the point, I felt a bit disappointed that the story isn't really going anywhere.

Of course neither is the main character, or the world, or that setting, so this may have been your point.

Except that, I had some reasoning as to why, even if this was the point, the story should still actually "go somewhere", but I forgot. Something about that if it didn't, it would be really like <some other story>, except less so. Sorry man, I totally forgot :) Maybe I'll just browse through the pages a bit later on, and it'll probably jog my memory. This is all I got right now :-)

Thanks for the read through, guys! I'm glad you dug it.

000 - that's a very valid critique, about it meandering about without a proper plot. I wrote it as I went, without an overarching story arc in mind, except that at the end, the main character must be brave enough to face death /destiny alone. (He cannot take his imaginary coworkers with him.)

So it developed day by day, each entry was based entirely on my mood, thoughts of the day, etc.

In terms of turning this into something I could present to people, I was thinking of [eventually] retyping the text and maybe playing that up a bit more, that there will come a time when he must put the delusions aside and face the raw truth.

I loved it Cram. However, I got the vibe that it was written by someone who was deludedly convinced he was the last one alive. I think that's the opposite of what you were shooting for but it works that way too. The fact that I was reading it made me see it that way and the scanned-notebook format made it more real, like I'd found one of the "jack's raging bile-duct" books from fight club. And was wondering WTF happened to this guy. Did he eventually completely sever his connection with the real world and walk out in front of a bus or something? I think fucking with the format would detract from this. Less impact maybe?
