Title: Wheeeeeeeeeeee!
Post by: Cain on March 14, 2007, 01:30:49 PM
http://concordiamovement.blogspot.com/2007/03/black-iron-prison.html

Modern Discordians have finally almost created a new idea on their own . . . they only had to rip it off from an imfamous CIA investigated sci-fi hack named Dick. How appropriate.

This idea is known as the Black Iron Prison, and the basic concept is that your own perceptions are a prison from which you can never break free from. Once you realize you are trapped in a prison you can try to break out, but once you are outside you realize you are trapped within a larger, more impenetrable, prison. No matter what you do, or what you try, you are trapped.

What a cheery concept.

They offer no ways to get out, or think around this concept, its just laid out there and you had better digest it, accept it, and like it or you are a shallow fool who doesn't get the 'harsh reality' of the situation.

The idea comes from Dick's book Valis, which nobody I know has read or even heard of. The more obscure, the better, I guess.

That tears it.  We need to get Parker Brothers on the horn to develop a BIP Monopoly game.  So, far for tokens we've got a barstool, the Golden Hand Grenade of Go Fuck Yourself, we could throw in a golden apple for nostalgia.

Just a thought...
the dude *may* have a point.
BIP does sorta come off as pretty depressing.
Not that it doesn't sorta make sense, but yeah... come on, the name already suggests it's not a "fun" read.

Sure, it's depressing to someone who totally misses the point

Lys, check out the "GSP" thread I just bumped.  Let me know if that's any less depressing.

Ah yeah, GSP thread curious.

Also, that site mentioned...
it's discordians trying to "take down" discordia, so I don't think it needs to be taken too seriously in the first place.

Very few things do.  On the other hand, it's not a bad idea to have someone occasionally taking us to task like we do others.  It may be that they're missing the point because they're too heavily invested in another worldview to even begin to understand what we're doing/saying, but it may also be that we're getting too far into the habit of ... preaching to the choir isn't the best metaphor, but when we write stuff to post here, we know that most of them already have certain understandings, grok our acronyms and our..."culturally unique" metaphors, so we forget to try writing with an eye toward the "lay person".

i think it's interesting that this guy got almost the same conclusion as Laz did.

no matter if they both completely missed the fucking point, we might want to think about priming the BIP concept for short-sightedness

Oh no, I didn't miss the point.
I never said that the book sucked, it just comes off dark and depressing. I can see how it IS a good thing though.

But yeah, you have to remember, we're dealing with cabbages here, they could pikc it up, see "Black iron prison" and go, "Oh that's not happy enough for me to bother with" and toss it in the bin or sommink.

Just a thought.

True, but I don't think anyone has any delusion of getting to everybody.  Even if 5% read it and get it, it's better than nothing.
Title: Re: Wheeeeeeeeeeee!

I do think we might want to put something like, "if you think this is depressing, you haven't really understood it yet.  Read it again" somewhere.  Maybe the back cover?
Title: Re: Wheeeeeeeeeeee!
Post by: Lies on March 14, 2007, 04:28:40 PM
You know, your dealing with an ex-telemarketer here :P
5% is the average we expect on a GOOD day. Thats about what a "decent" telemarketer can achieve anyway.
There are some "pros" that get about 15% conversation rate, that takes some serious fucking marketing skills.

At my best guess, I'd wager the average of this book actually getting through to them is around 1-2%.

But I could be dead wrong.
I've never tried to market "thinking" to people before.

Just a thought.

Telling somone they need to read the thing that depressed them again is an inferior tactic to not depressing them in the first place.

Suggests to me there is scope for revising. I've been in the "BIP coulda been more upbeat" - camp since I read it.

BIP was the second piece of discordian literature I ever read. I liked it. I thought it was really good but I didn't think it was quite as good as the original PD.

I hope I'm not pissing on anyones parade here because I reckon between the talent that produced the BIP and the noobs who have arrived here since then there is the potential to produce a doc that blows PD out the water.

if at first you don't succeed ....

[edit] IMO this forum blows PD out the water and off the map. But it's a bastard of a thing to print out

Ugh, look.  I am a reformed depressed-goth-emo-whatever.  I wrote the dark poetry, wore the black clothes, told everyone I wanted to die, etc.,  etc.,

But really, REALLY, please, somebody for the love of Frederick tell me, specifically, how is the BIP depressing?

"The world is fucked up.  But, you don't have to be fucked up with it."  How is that depressing?

Title: Re: Wheeeeeeeeeeee!
Post by: Triple Zero on March 14, 2007, 05:44:05 PM
well it seems rather obvious, but it isn't to many.

just like a lot of people only tend to notice the first part of the law of fives, and ignore the second

maybe a lot of people tend only to see the "black! prison! you can't escape! the world is fucked!" bit and ignore the "But, you don't have to be fucked up with it" part.

but if they get that wrong that doesn't mean they can never get it.
most probably they are still locked into some sort of preconceived notion, which they should be shaken out of.

It's nothing I can specifically put my finger on. It's the overall impression I came away with. There were bits that made me laugh but the overwhelming mood was one of doom. Maybe someone with mad lit crit skillz could explain why but that aint me, I just tell it like I see it.

y'know that would be an interesting experiment.  At POEE you have to post in a certain section before you can become full-fledged.  Here we could do something like you have to post a rant/sermon/writing before your 50th post, or else, something.  Then put em all together.  Kind of like a pre-test or something.  Or maybe that's a bad idea.

Hi,
Just read the Principia Discordia, being a roleplayer and having an open mind  (an essential pre-requisite really) I have been interested in alternative religions/belief systems more leaning towards the themes  of Chaos and Paganism. I think I've found something I can relate to in the Principia. :) I decided to google about and see what people were saying about it, I just knew there'd be a forum out there and am delighted to find one, even better that it's populated by a bunch of roleplayers. :) I've been roleplaying on and off for about 13 years. The RPG group I was with got too big and I was falling asleep waiting on my turn so I left for a couple of years(!). I am about to rejoin the same group, which has shrunk a bit since we parted ways and am looking forward to it immensly. Strangely, most of the people in the group have turned to Wicca/Chaos Madgick, or a branch of Paganism from their born into religions/belief sets. I am the only Discordian in the group. Mostly my characters are preists and clerics, so it looks like I will be adapting Discordianism into D&D, etc, possibly even the Red Dwarf RPG. :)

Hi all. I stumbled on this madness trying to find a decent PD link, lurked for a bit, then (against my better and worse judgement) thought I'd wander up to the discussion trough.

Just to get some background of mine out of the way (so we can all get our preconceptions in-line):

I was raised Unitarian Universalist, then ran across a copy of RAW's Schroedinger's Cat Trilogy when I was 17 (still one of my all-time favorites, and the best description of the parallel universe model I've managed to find) which led to, naturally, the Illuminatus! Trilogy and PD, as well as a bunch of other weird and wild stuff. I'm an agnostic, but since it's nice to have someone to blaspheme at, Eris fits the bill nicely.

I'm a musician (professionally trained at Berklee in Boston where I still live, for what very, very little that's worth) and I also kill time in an office at one of the larger "learning institutions" here in Beantown. I used to think I wanted to be a professional musician, but then I actually dealt with the industry, and you couldn't make me deal with those assholes if you paid me enough to afford my own country - one of the bigger ones with a decent military, not some tiny-assed island.

Now I just spend my time doing whatever seems kind of cool at the moment. Mostly that's reading, noodling on the bass (my instrument of choice) or playing video games while ruminating on matters both mundane and esoteric, unless I don't feel like it just then.

Anyway, just thought I'd throw some basics about me, so when you ask yourself "Hey. Who's that one guy?" you've got this to help.

Oh, and the requisite 23, fnord, etc. to just get it out of the way

Quote from: The Littlest Ubermensch:

This is my first rant, and first post here, so tell me what you think.

Look at the world around you, and can you say the normal, ,Äúsane,Äù individual truly lives a fulfilled life? What has happened to these individuals stripped of their identity? They are a product of a world without spirituality!
Not that any of this is to say bullshit claiming to be the word of some great patriarch pimp in the sky is spirituality, but the soul, the primal drive for some sort of untamed, unmolded, uninhibited growth, needs to be reclaimed by man. Over the millennia we have learned religion and organization offers no solace; indeed they have only told us to destroy ourselves in anticipation of an unnamed reward.  But from where can we retain this sort of raw spiritual energy man seeks for fulfillment? Certainly Discordianism has offered the laughing disorder that frees us from withering away in an organized, restrictive world, but it is not enough!
In this I offer the next step, cultural devolution, moving to a time when the world was still untamed by us or our order, past the beginnings of a Theocratic society to those of a Theacratic society of spiritual leaders guiding others to fufillment! What I mean is a return to the original way, the way of shamanism! Not the bullshit spouted by New Ager sellouts of ,Äúgetting in touch with your totem animal,Äù and such marketing schemes, but the techniques of spiritual ecstasy through music, dance, communal ritual, and substance use that marked the tribal worlds of early society! For a while we tried meditation, the Buddhist attempts at ,Äúquieting the mind,Äù to let in spirituality, but our generation will never truly be affected by settling down, sitting still, and forcing away our disquieting thoughts. We have gone far into what can be clich?©d as the Information Age, where our youth must process huge amounts of knowledge to simply survive. We can see around us a desperate attempt at a return to life! Even those who are still sitting on their couches are filled with discontent at the system which restricts them so, though their frustration is being tapped by whatever power hungry organization (i.e. the Religious Right, the Democratic Party, almost any corporation). Meditation is nothing but the same extinguishing of life for entrance of a new one that religion is, and will never keep hold with our society.
But how should we cause this return to shamanism in our society completely changed from the days of shamanism? Easy friends, we must embrace (and bear with me here) the rave movement. I know what many of you will say to yourself, ,Äúthose ravers are just a bunch of dumb teens on Ecstasy looking for a new scene to attach to,Äù. But that,Äôs not the case. Raves are like any other concert, and may be even cleaner. But the specific reason for the rave is that it is absolutely a shamanistic ritual in its entirety. Pulsing music drives the ravers in the same way the shamans of old were moved by the music of the tribe; the ravers dance out of a genuine spiritual ecstasy; they immerse themselves into an environment full of heat, motion, and powerful bass drums rattling through their body to create an energy that fills them entirely; and partake inso many other shamanistic action all leading to a mass spiritual cleansing and rebirth. And from this comes secretaries, deliverymen, and others who still hate their jobs and surroundings like everyone else, but have something to live for and know that some great spiritual need has been filled within them. Shamanism can be reborn, it is already being reborn, and it can be given unto a world that cries out for it.

I think it prolly makes a big difference how much experience with philosophical-type discussion groups you bring to the table. The clued-up noob will already have their online persona pretty much sorted out. For me it's like public speaking - something that you develop as you go on. That means issues of being able to express yourself properly will be covered. You'll be a confident online author and able to deal with any bullshit that gets flung your way.

Another thing that comes with experience is actually reading some posts before you jump in. You have the unprecedented opportunity to walk into a clubroom and get to know the people you are meeting, before you even meet them.

Your next step is to instigate a major flame war. Most of my best online relationships have grown from the ashes of those.

i try to cause chaos when i can
we could work that into a job description....

a short list of some of my recent activities

today i climbed my old highschool, got high, and used a fat red sharpie to make arrows on the roof of the school pointing to things you could see from up there. like perkins, and the ice rink, about half were porly labled like iceland

yesterday i wrote a message to a friend on a big ass log and left it on her doorstep.

then i stole a can of redi-whip froma gas station and rode my bike arround doing whippets.

after that i went to the carwash where my friends work and drive my bike through it three times (yeah, it was on)(yeah i gor wet)

then i climbed a karati place and went in through the trap door on the roof and stole a trophy that i traded for weed.

then i climbed th liquor store looking for another trap door, but no luck. so i turned off their ventilation system.

ive been climbing a lot of buildings

good times

okay those were far more trouble than they were worth

The BIP...from an insider's perspective, it's common sense.  It's a mission statement.  It's the "facts of life," Discordian style.

From an outsider's pov, it's a bit depressing, it comes off as smartass-toldjaso-getthefuckoverit.  Doesn't make it any less troofy, but you have to consider that when your exposure to this sort of horrible troof(tm) is a bit limited at first, especially if you haven't delved into the PD lit, you might be a bit thrown by the general fucked up/everything is fucked up nature of it.

I'm not surprised someone is canning it with a fake label and selling it on the black market already.  The job with the people HERE, imho, is to blow that misconception out of the water and put it into a more get-at-able arena.

The PD spoke to a whole generation of former cabbages and pinks, and the BIP should do the same.  The PD doesn't talk DOWN to its audience, but rather ribs them gently and provokes a lot of "WTF?"...shouldn't the BIP do the same?

Or is the target audience a different genre?  Does the BIP presuppose a bit of intelligence within the head so that certain things are "given"?  There isn't a whole hell of a lot of that with the PD, imo.  There's more of a "if you get it, welcome, if you don't, enjoy the ride nonetheless til the last period is read."

Just putting thoughts to screen, Guys.  I'm enjoying the discussions, wish I had more to give.
Title: Re: Wheeeeeeeeeeee!
Post by: tyrannosaurus vex on March 15, 2007, 04:06:47 AM
the BIP was borne of a lot of Discordians who have already 'been there, done that' with the PD stuff.  it's an expansion beyond the entry-level mindfuckery, an investigation into the mechanics of human behavior and metapsychology. it's still Discordian, just more refined.  it doesn't necessarily presuppose 'intelligence,' but it does presuppose a certain boredom with everything the PD has to offer.

the problem arises when people who haven't had the time, or expended the energy, to delve into Discordianism very deeply.  same thing you always had -- those who see discordianism as a religion disguised as a joke are more apt to getting into the BIP than those who see it as a joke disquised as a religion.

of course, it doesn't matter what kind of reviews it gets.  because the BIP trip is, by nature, concerned only with those who are looking for information.  people looking for answers quite rightly don't get it.  the good thing about the BIP is that if you start in with the wrong intentions, you'll always miss the point.  understanding the concepts requires you to do most of the hard work yourself, first.

I think we need to separate the BIP pamphlet from the BIP fora.  I think the BIP fora are probably less intimidating in a certain respect in that it is more open-ended, and by its nature, requires input from multiple sources.

As far as the pamphlet I can understand, to a certain degree, how someone who is just not paying attention would get lost in the "black"ness and the "prison"ness of the metaphor.  I guess I see the BIP as a downsized PD.  that is, we fired middle-management, which in the PD was teh funnay.  We gave teh funnay its walking papers and proceeded without him.  Cut out the fat.  Cut to the chase.  Cut to the bone!  Tough love.  Not everyone can handle that, it is true.

I guess lately my curmudgeony opinion is "fuck 'em".  If they are so dense that they can't get out of their own way to see what is being said, we don't need em.  Really.  I truly believe if I had picked this up, didn't know any of you cats, or anything about the PD, I would have gotten it.  "Yeah the world is fucked up!  Damn straight!  But, if I can keep my wits about me, if I can keep ME, I have a fighting chance."

Besides, do we really want to get at people who are so vapid and only skim the surfaces in life?  If so, then yes, this approach will never, ever work.  Maybe that's where the magazine comes in.  Gloss it up.  Put some BIP-babes in the centerfold.  Put in a crossword puzzle.  Put in some Discordian Recipes.  Oh, and of course, we cannot forget the complimentary spoon.

RWHN,

the PD also does presuppose this.

the difference is the way you walk out of it if you don't meet the requirements:

- didn't get the PD -> happy 23 pineal fnord fluff
- didn't get the BIP -> sad emo goth gloom

in its days, the PD also got dismissed by a whole lot of people saying it was too non-serious. of course. it was even intended that way.

Which disgruntled noob was this?

Its one of our own, posing as a passably intelligent (but not too smart) critic.

I hear what you are saying.  When I use the word "only" I mean it quite literally.  People who literally only skim the surface, no matter how much shaking.  And besides you give another example of why the sort of "tough love" approach of the BIP pamphlet is necessary.  Sometimes you have to stop spoon feeding, jam the spoon down their throat, and tell them to wake the fuck up.  And if you are not going to wake the fuck up then please, for the sake of my sanity, just move aside and get out of the way.  Lock em up in Wal-Mart and seal off the entrances.

Yes, my point being we shouldn't seek them out.  We shouldn't pander to that type of audience, thus, once again why I don't think the so-called depressive negativism of the BIP is an issue.  If we are talking to cats with an inkling of depth, they'll figure it out.  The rest of them, fuck em.  That's my attitude.

i think you're right, at least up to the point where our propaganda works so well that people might have heard the "negative prejudice" before they even get a chance to approach the surface.

but given that most people we bring into contact with this stuff probably haven't ever heard about it before, and definitely wouldn't give any credit to the likes of Laz, i suppose you're completely right.

Oh, if anyone is wondering, Terry Pratchett did steal ideas from Discordianism to put into Discworld Noir.  He also used a fair few similar themes in the Thief of Time (such as the character Kaos was one of the 5 horsemen of the Apocalypse).

If you haven't read Thief of Time yet, you really should.  Its incredibly Discordian.  You have the bullshitting "wise man" monk, you have the fight between order (typified by the Auditors) and disorder of humans in general, and some pretty good semi-mindfucks.  The sign "do not feed the elephant" was a pretty good one.

Truth.  He does have a wicked sense of humour that sits well with our sort of people.

His ability to squeeze so many jokes and one-liners, between ridiculous scenarios and paradigms, every single paragraph always made me think of him as a kinda Douglas Adams on brain steroids.

Not to mention his ability to parody is very well developed.

Rankin is another author in that vein, though his humour is much darker in many ways.  Armageddon the Musical and The Garden of Unearthly Delights are great books to have.

Do you have to read the Discworld series in order, and if so, which one is first?

Each book generally stands alone.  However, there are a few sub series in them.  So, for example, if you want to know about the Ankh-Morpork city watch, reading Guards Guards! first is a good idea, though not necessary.  I would go with the Colour of Magic and the Light Fantastic, as his first two novels.  They introduce the scenery, as it were, as well as one of the main characters, Rincewind.

There are also a lot of running jokes which you might miss if you don't read in order but TBH there is so much in there you'd still enjoy them immensely regardless.

Yeah.

As far as I can tell, the main "series" within the books are the following

Rincewind - the worst wizard in the world (as in, not very good at it).  Gifted linguist, absolute coward.

The Night Watch - Mostly Sam Vimes and others, charting the change of the city watch from just another gang into an actual policing force for what is almost an ungovernable city.

Weatherwax/Lancre - witchery, a backwards country far too similar to Scotland  and assorted things.

The Unseen University - usually in conjunction with Rincewind, the only college for the study of magic on the planet and its rather inept faculty.

The Grim Reaper - death himself, the anthropomorphic personification with a soft spot for humanity.

And there are a fair few one off novels.  I'd say most were to do with the City watch series, because Pratchett himself says its hard to write about anything happening in Ankh-Morpork without them getting involved.

there's also the Gods and the egyptian-sort-of-stuff, but those are mostly one-off as well. the counterweight continent ...

ah i should really just simply start over reading again :)

or maybe just better pick a few up at random, yeah.

*thinks very hard if he knows somebody he can borrow Thief of Time from, before i leave for the weekend*

while Douglas Adams was legendary, he only did it once (or six times, if you count all the HHGTTG books, Dirk Gently was .. nice, but not amazing) where Terry Pratchett really pulls it off in every Discworld episode.

while on the subject there's also Pratchett's co-op with Neil Gaiman, Good Omens, really good one, that too. mix of Pratchett and Gaiman, what more can you ask for ;-)

Incidentally, this one of the best ones dealing with the character of Death.  Not the best, but pretty good.

I think there's an inherent problem faced by anyone trying to portray pratchett's death in a movie or miniseries, namely the fact that death talks in capital letters. Srlsly this might not sound particularly funny but wait'll you read Mort, IMHO it's one of his best gags but it doesn't translate to screen. Also the fact that he doesn't talk out loud he kinda changes the past so you remember him saying it. I honestly don't think they'll ever do him justice on screen.

I loves me some Pratchett. I gobble up these books as fast as the man can write them.

Thief of Time is excellent (I would definitely second a nomination of the Sweeper for Discordian Sainthood - we need a copy of his notebook!) and I'm also very partial to Night Watch, a great satire on revolution. Small Gods satirizes philosophy and religion wonderfully as well. He does a great job of poking fun at whatever he feels like without slamming his point over your head like a brick to the face - and makes you laugh while he's doing it. Highly recommended.

You Brits are lucky to get the tv shows in addition to the books over there - I can't wait to check out that Hogfather stuff. I'm definitely curious to see how an ANTHROPOMORPHIC PERSONIFICATION gets portrayed - who knows, maybe they pull it off. :D

The good news is the Death of Rats made it in there and he's totally true to the books!
