first set of postergasm photos is up:

http://www.flickr.com/gp/22982051@N03/42rAiB

we ran out of light and didn't get as many good shots as we'd like, but it's a start.

That was fun! The people in McDonalds were all very amused by our awesome facial hair.

I actually have my printer working...I'll see what I can get done tomorrow (might need to buy some sellotape though....)

Oh happy happy! This is something I can participate in. It's very much like larding, except that rather than having specific victims beneficiaries, the PUBLIC is your beneficiary!

LARD THE WORLD

great pics!

btw i gotta warn you, flickr sucks partly in that (i recently discovered) with a free account, you can have only three sets. yes, that's right.
but you can still upload as many photos as you like and tag them, though.

btw, any idea why they're not showing up here: ?

Well, thats good.

Since I slept in for 13 hours, and can't find my gloves, I wont be postergasming today.  But I'll have some shit ready to go for tomorrow, for sure.

according to flickr, it takes 24-48 hours for tagged photos to get noticed by the spiders.

Didn't know about the three sets. That's bogus. What's the difference between a set and a group, anyway?
Title: Re: POSTERGASM
Post by: Triple Zero on January 20, 2008, 07:01:34 PM
i havent played with groups yet, but as far as i can figure, a set is a collection of your own pictures, and a group is a bunch of pictures from multiple accounts?

instead of sets, i'm just tagging my pics with a tag that indicates what "set" they belong to. the only downside seems to be that you can't sort them (meaning if you upload them in chronological order, you're gonna view them last-to-first).

Most excellent! We had planned an outing but the 2 degree weather forced a Cabal Revolt. Ah well, regrouping and implementation are imminent.

Similar conditions here.  I nearly had to cancel my traditional morning coffee the weather here is so bad.  The air should not attempt to freeze around you while you walk down the road.

Post by: Cramulus on January 21, 2008, 10:40:32 PM
the replies to postergasm on 23ae are reminding me why I hang out here and not on other allegedly Discordian sites.

Quoteoracor - that makes no sense. that's not to say that it should, but if you really want to waste time you need to put more, or less, ink into it. less is a poster similar to the one above but simply reading: two. more is a full color print of textless content that is completely irrelevent yet somehow completely visible over anything else. there should be no recognizable symbolism involved at all. a "missing" poster containing a blank space where the missing article, animal or person would be and a phone number might also have some substantial effect. posters soaked in kerosene and set on fire are also effective, if they are posters depicting an image or picture of fire and nothing else. eye images are never practical, but i'm not permitted to explain why.
1/20/2008 9:33:49 PM

Cramulus - okay do it - and be sure to take pictures of it, it sounds really great.
1/20/2008 9:41:54 PM

oracor - by nature i have no intention of doing anything whatsoever. furthermore, i don't own a camera, but your appreciation of sound is recognized. cheers.
1/21/2008 1:16:53 PM

lol - all theory, no action.

the reply to the OMGASM POST started off much better, but then went sharply downhill as well.

But that's the internet for ya.

  I don't have those er capabilities.  No access to FedexKinko's here, bub!  But a poster blitz sounds just the ticket.

Just might have to wait til the rainy stuff moves out of town, or think of places I could put them up in "public" view that are shelterd from the wet.  I'm thinking public library or something like that.

Public transit is another good place to leave flyers, especially longer materials.

Also, welcome back Jenne.

Just use a home printer.  Paper is cheap (and will be cheaper when paper shares plummet) and black and white printing hardly uses up the ink cartons with any great speed.

Also, I hit the University's economic department this morning.  It seemed....right, to spread some chaos there on a day like today.

So, we will be seeing some postergasmic activities oot and aboot--Friday, I believe, shall be a wondrous day to move forward...might rain that day, but who gives a fuck?

Awsom!

I can't wait so see some more photos posted on flickr and tagged "postergasm"

because right now I'm the only one up there

and I'm having a short, silly, stupid battle on 23ae. There are some armchair Discordians who don't want to participate because they don't think it's possible to organize Discordians and accomplish anything. Please help me please them wrong?

JENNE - If I haven't said it yet, nice to see you 'round these parts! And also: Married to the Sea is A-OK and has some great material that might be used for this project. I almost think it would be more interesting to leave out the reference to the website. That way it won't look like an advertisement. People have a tendency to see stuff posted in public and assume that it's for some commercial purpose. I think it would have more impact if you don't leave the option for people to consider it an ad. Totally your choice though!

I thought about not ref...but I want to give Drew and Nat their due, yknow?  They make their living off of it, and the advert is so random (I mean, srsly, who's "marriedtothesea"?)...but then I've been wearing their t-shirts around town and getting "what's that?" and "explain that!" from all these moms at the schools.

There's this one:  You have cholera.  With this little blue pill thingie:

(http://www.nataliedee.com/072906/hey-look-its-a-little-cholera.jpg) that is on this orange background that I wear...drives people nuts.

They also like my "Exercising Blows" t-shirt from toothpastefordinner.

Stupid stinking meme sheet keeps crashing my crappy browser!  May have to do this on my PC.  I printed out some sticker labels to leave in random places, though.

ETA:  Ok, not that you all care, but I'm all printed out and ret ta go!  :D  I'll have to make my kids my partners in crime so I can get pix done...might get awkward trying to take 'em myself...hm...also, I travel light, so it'll have to be phone pix or gtfo, sorry.  The only other digital cam we have is my husband's prized Cannon that I am rarely allowed to touch.

My poor kid--I bought at LEAST 5 t-shirts from tpfd for him...he barely "got" them.  When he figures them out, though, he comes running in and is very excited about it.  :lulz:  I'm not a nice mom.  But hey, the tshirts are teh awesome.

Is that the whole basis of their argument?

What idiots.  I suspect what they mean is that its much easier to just call yourself a Discordian and act wacky on a forum all day long instead of, you know...actually doing something.

And hell, its not like your even asking them to blow up the Federal Reserve (hi, NSA-bot!), or even do something borderline illegal like run the DoJ website through Gigaloader 23,000 times.  Its using a printer, some paper and your spare time.  Without wanting to make too many assumptions about people I have never met, these people sound like they suffer from Special Nerditis.  They have their own little in joke (ie; Discordianism) that makes them feel superior to all the Grays and Cabbages, and they take great pride in that because they have little else to be proud about.  Therefore, spreading the word or doing jakes, doing things that could let others in on the joke, threatens their oh so special status.

Or words to that effect.  Its pretty much the same as Subgenii who are obssesed with "Bobbies", Pagans obsessed with "fluffy bunnies" and all secret societies everywhere.

Simple retort for pro-disorganize pinealists:

1. "Was Hagbard Celine a Discordian?" (yes)
2. "Was the crew of the Leif Ericson Discordian?" (yes)
3. "How did they get things done?" (organization)

Did I ever tell you about the most awesome and authentic Vikings I ever met? It was a SCA group at Pennsic... from Japan. Perfect replicas, camp layout, living quarters, cookware, all perfect... for 4'9", beardless Vikings.

They even drank like Vikings... or SCAdians (not a lot of difference).

Yeah, I thought it was fantastic... absurd and a testament to the Erisian aspect of the SCA (secretly a cult celebrating the Holey Union of Dionysus and Eris).

Now we've got some stuff going up at flickr! http://flickr.com/search/?q=postergasm

I want to remind people that after they take the pics, they have to tag each individual photo with "postergasm" for it to show up on that feed. It'll take a day or two to show up. RAWK ON, people!

Those of you who said you'd participate but still haven't - GET ON IT!
Title: Re: POSTERGASM

the GASM feed is updated so that it now automatically picks up on flickr photos tagged with the same name as the GASM:

http://elvicities.com/~ananames/gasmfeed.html

(so far, only postergasm, but there will definitely be more in the future)

for how it works and how you use it, please read my page about web2.0 on the GASM Wiki (which is linked from OMGASM in the GASMfeed).

(also i've only had the chance to debug it for Opera and Firefox, so it most probably won't work in IE. even though i would love to ignore IE as a browser, the point of the GASM project is exposure, so i will fix it for IE as soon as i get the chance)

Ok, so not posters and no photos (due to the need for being circumspect)... but there are now 50 meme bombs from the available pdf's sitting in various in-boxes around the corporation.

I told the security guys watching the cameras that I was on a data security checkup, so they had no suspicions watching me wander around the building. Muhahahahaha.

Posters will be going up around Columbus throughout the week and pictures will be included.

Much LULZ can be had by printing out several of these, shuffling them with blank paper then putting them into the paper tray upside down. Executive assistants print out large reports and only use the tops and they don't even look at the backs...

updates--
So far, Volume Dingus is doing really well. I've put them up in "high risk" spots - meaning that they're in spots where these things usually get torn down within hours. Nevertheless, most posters have remained up for three or four days.

We've observed two people reading the posters to whomever they are on the cell phone with, visibly laughing. That really made my day.

It occurred to me that, if a passer-by was inspired enough, they could simply take down a poster I put up and photocopy it, which is definitely something I would do so it's easy to see how someone might have done that.

flickr feeds tagged with <something>gasm get picked up automatically as long as there is at least one item on del.icio.us tagged with gasm and <something>gasm.

The GASM Mission Feed (http://baronvonhoopla.blogspot.com/) picks up stuff on flickr as long as there's already a delicious category for it.

For example--

if there's a picture on flickr tagged "orgasm" it won't get picked up by the mission feed
--unless someone tagged something on del.icio.us with the tags "orgasm", and "gasm"

OHHH, I got it. So if I tag on flickr stuff "postergasm" or "colbertgasm" or something, it will be in the GASMfeed whether I tag those on del.icio.us or not; because other people have tagged those things on del.icio.us already. Yes?

Will the Gasm Feed pick up things from other picture sites such as say...photobucket? Photobucket seems to host pictures and albums more efficiently and you can still add as many tags as you need...it's what I use to host pictures anyways...so is there anyway that I can get the feed to pick those up as well?

Yes I would like that account, and the link to the PDF was http://mihd.net/qulkmi (http://mihd.net/qulkmi) and I believe that download is in PDF format, so that'd be cool if you want to put it on Vex's.

Oh, and guys...gotta say:
I went on my first POSTERGASM outing tonight (12:38 so most things closed) lol, it was VERY fun. I took pictures on my shitty cell phone, so if I DO get them up their not great. However it was hilarious, we hit a couple church's, blockbuster, hospital, 2 gas station pumps(which works good for long reads), a library, THE FUCKING COURTHOUSE DOOR lol...ummm the Bowling Alley, Burger King Drive through on a thing above the speaker....and last but not least we put up our favorite "Now that you've read this I'll follow you home"...and we put it on the Wal-Mart missing children glass cover of those bulletins. Classic.

I used some from Mine I just recently made (adding more to them as I think..) and then some from the one's you all have listed on the wiki.

Heh, well I would have even excused it more about the cops thing IIIIF I say IF I had put the seal. It just said www.blackironprison.com lol...Oklahoma small towns are funny...immediately jump to conclusions over nothing.

"OH MY GOD IT SAID BLACK AND PRISON!!" :argh!:

But the COPS? Who calls the fuzz over a poster on a gas pump lol...oh no, it said something about freethinking...we better call the police before the KKK rise up again?

Also, for reference it's that one in my posters I made the other day that says LOOK! really big at the top and then has the small text towards the bottom...

Oh, yeah also could I get an account on the wiki?

Well the cool thing is that all of this hullabaloo might just draw out some actual investigation of the website. police attention is a better result than some gaspump goon ripping it down without reading it. most of us don't get the benefit of seeing the reaction to our posters, so you got a rare treat there.  :D

Just got word from my only other Cabal member (only two, does that count? We'll grow)....and he just informed me that he is at one of the gas stations, and they called the cops last night after finding the poster (he knows guy who works there) mainly because at the bottom I had the URL www.blackironprison.com and in this redneck southern town it was taken as a racist "inprison the blacks type thing" lol. LMFAO

Also, glorious.

I'm not sure it was completely a racist thing now, partly yes. But it seems the full story is that people called the cops suspecting some kind of cultist weird society or organization...probably especially after posters of similar nature appear all over town and on the court house.

Also, thanks Professor. Also guys don't think I'm too stupid using my name, Matthew Pizgatti is an alias as well...it's cool. I'm going to add that new link to the wiki if you haven't already. Thanks for putting it up once again.

Oh,

EDIT:
We went around the other day with about 25 more signs of varying things and hit every major building in our small city here. Today I just printed out around 35 posters, 11 something longer ones  of Roger's, and around 15 of those 23 things to do while you wait fliers (wasted about 20 pages until I found out how to print those pamphlets on opposite sides of paper.), and then around 6-7 of some certain ones to go on windshields and such. It'll be fun next time we can get over into town. I would love to take more pictures guys, but even if I put them in the computer it's with my phone so they are crappy as hell, and you have the choice of a far away picture where you can't read the sign but can see where it's posted or a close up to read the sign but can see where it is....

They ripped all the posters out of the local post office, and put up postergasm stuff, the post office plaque picture things are all down the street, it seems these unnamed people also took newspapers off the step of a local stores front and spread them down and around the street and placed meme bombs in many mailboxes...

Is that a federal offense for those unnamed persons? as well as a curfew thing at 1 in da morning?

RAWK ON, man. Never thought of gas pumps for the longer pieces, either. Good call.

I've done some covert spying on people reading posters, and I've found that unless they're a captive audience, they're not going to finish the longer (Roger) rants.

How far do you think they get?

What do you mean by "captive audience"? Stuck on public transportation, type of deal?

I agree with Net here. I don't see what it accomplishes to take down other people's stuff. It just identifies the person who put the flyers up as a vandal. also, better to stuff meme bombs inside newspapers than to trash the newspapers alltogether.

I don't know. I would say the paper's are useless propaganda from the mass media here anyways. Vandalism is as old as the things being vandalized. It has not brought down the institutions that oppress, and it does not open up people's minds.

People want their newspapers, and they want a working postal system. They want their general surroundings to not look like shit. In a war of images, the System WILL win. It has the home field advantage, not to mention better teamwork.

That is why Operation: Mindfuck is about mindfucking. We are not attacking the System itself, or its image. POSTERGASM memebombs are direct shots at the people that normally defend the system: uncritical, complacent minds.
Title: Re: POSTERGASM

I get what everyone is saying, and I do agree. I didn't mean to associate unthinking vandalism with the true goals of waking people up so to speak. I hope I don't get in trouble later as I put up signs around town...basically I should have thought it through a bit more, unlike me, but also unlike me to drink and then go running around. I'll be more careful, in a still chaotic way. And I can't deny the fun factor though, tis was great,  but I see where the problem came in, should have just posted and left. Even placing the plaques on the floor would be fine, but not taking em away completely.
Small changes+many acts and many people= overlapping big project of mindfucked.

On the way to work this morning I was looking out the train window, and there was this really beautiful bridge that ran over a brook. A really pretty scene. And there was a sign on the side of the bridge which said "NO GRAFFITI" (this was, of course, vandalized -but that's besides the point) And I thought to myself - isn't this sign itself graffiti?

It's spoiling the beauty of this scene, but it's somehow legitimate.

I think I'm gonna make some ironic posters like "DO NOT HANG SIGNS ON THIS WALL"

Somewhat related question: how do I make my printer at home print without margins? I have a few posters I've made a .doc of (for a GASM-ish mission, more on that later), but they look all wrong with margins. And if I can't do that with a regular home laser printer, I'd imagine I could do something like that at Kinkos, right?

the printers at kinkos will put on about 1/8" margin. if you want to print the copy out to full bleed (right up to the grey edge) i would recommend either fitting the document to print within the 8.5x11 margins and cutting it or printing the document centered on 11x17" and cutting it. kinkos have a cutter that will cut a whole stack of paper.  it comes out to 1.50/cut and i think for a full color 11x17 on laser paper it comes to around 2 bucks per print.  if you perfer to fit the document to print on 8.5x11 kinkos is running a 49 cent color copy special.

printers always have margins, afaik. you just need to cut them off.

stuff that gets printed to A4 (that's european paper size) to the margins, is usually printed on a larger paper, then cut to A4.

use InDesign or Illustrator for full control over your layout. but you're going to need to cut either way. this is a mechanical limitation with printers.

xposting this thought from the IRC channel:

"i just think with all the propaganda posters we're not doing a very good job at really spreading URLs for people that want to know more. hell, there's often not even googleable terms on a poster :) but that's also because we never quite had a good URL to put on the propaganda, the main index page of PD.com tells nothing, and the forum is too big for anyone to get a good glance. the blog is perfect"

so uh, anybody that makes posters, and wants to put a sort of followup URL on it, but is not sure what it should be, use

It seems it might be good to put a link to the blog on the front page?

I prefer not to put the full link on the posters, because I'm afraid the more discerning viewers might look at it and go "oh, it's an ad" and never think about it again... and those are the exact people we WANT to come here, IMO.

However, the word "Discordia" or the phrase "All Hail Discordia" on the posters somewhere is quite Googleable, and PD.com is pretty high in the results. If you make people FIND it, they will WANT it.

If these are truly discerning viewers they'd see that PosterGASM posters sell ideas, not products. You mean, if they share your commie-fail perspective of ads = ev0l-madgjixcks you think they'd get along with us. Though on point in other areas, that still doesn't fly.

If someone is so rabidly anti-capitalist/paranoid to reject something on the basis of "it looking like an ad" even though it's placed in a space that isn't paid for, they're probably too dogmatic and grey for this board to begin with.

I'm not the one who thinks advertising is evil, pangolin-face. I'm the one who thinks it's a tool. I spend about $5300/year on advertising, it's a valid tool. Like any tool, it can be used ethically or unethically.

Have you noticed that this city is literally covered with ads? They're everywhere. people want you to come check out their bands, their baby clothes, their whatever. A lot of ads are pretty clever, too. All I'm saying is that I think it would be more effective/interesting to make people dig a little, pique their interest, rather than throw the ad ('cause that's what it is, an ad for PD.com) right on the poster, because I think there's kind of a high rate for burnout and dismissal of ads, however clever and subversive. So that's what I'm doing. Other people can do it however they think is awesomest or funniest or whatever.

So, yeah, my approach is a little more viral marketing" than "overt advertisement", and maybe that's dumb. But I still like it, and it's what I'm going to do.

Title: Re: POSTERGASM
Post by: Triple Zero on March 16, 2008, 05:02:28 PM
verb, yea that's a good idea. chalk it up to the list :)

also, i'm going to put principiadiscordia.com/blog on my posters anyway. i agree with Net on the part where if someone thinks that something (a memebomb) is cool, but then wouldn't want to find out more about it if the URL is handed on a plate to them, but under the same circumstances, the same person would find out more about it if they had to google a phrase for it, they're idiots.

okay, well, not quite idiots. but a tad shortsighted to actively disregard something you enjoy/piques your interest for the simple fact that it's got a URL on it.

personally, if i would find a poster that's weird and zany, makes me smile and/or think, i would definitely have a positive feeling towards the URL, and at least i would know for sure that it is actually related to the poster.
while if there's just a phrase, there must be something pretty damn compelling about that poster for me to write down the phrase in order to google it later, with a good chance that i won't find the people who made the poster, but just any random site (okay we know that PD.com will probably turn up in the first three results, but the target audience doesn't).

speaking of weird and zany, i know that there's a lot of young people actively or passively looking for just exactly that. comes with the territory of living in a city with a 20% student population, i guess. not all students of course, but i feel that a good part of them are (at least sunconsciously) aware of the twisted crazyness that permeates our existence, and that which we worship.

i've been putting up some every week in a "space for non-commercial messages" at one of the supermarkets here. i'm not entirely sure, but i think they are supposed to leave any messages there for at least a week, but i'm pretty certain my "DO NOT REMOVE THIS FLYER // HORNET" poster got removed after just a few days.
currently the "CIRCULAR REASONING WORKS BECAUSE OF--" poster is up at the same place since thursday afternoon, i haven't been able to check back, but will do so on monday, if it's removed, i'm going to complain about it. because it is non-commercial, afterall (also it's not like the HORNET poster was replaced with something else, there was just an empty space--that i refilled with the circular reasoning poster)
Title: Re: POSTERGASM
Post by: Cramulus on March 16, 2008, 08:33:43 PM
The cool thing about these projects is that we can all approach it in different ways.

For my part, I'm leaving URLs off of the posters because I hate it when people try to sell me something, even stuff I actually want. Something as innocuous as a URL makes me dismiss it almost immediately. In this world of constant memetic bombardment, I consider it a survival skill.

A few months ago, I got into an argument about this topic with a guy at a focus group. I insisted that there is next to nothing that Axe Body Spray can do which will make me go to their website. No matter what celebrity you get to pimp it, no matter how hot the models are, I see too many commericals to have any interest in seeking out cooler ones. I know that we're not a scam (...or are we?) but the average pedistrian's reaction is a little bit harder to pin.

When I'm engaged in Postergasm or other mindfuck projects, my target audience is static: I'm projecting this mindfuck at some person who is JUST LIKE ME. He shares my sense of humor and my obsession with the surreal and the absurd. Maybe he hasn't figured out how to start investigating his cell yet. And I know that guy will genuinely appreciate some little poster which is just supposed to be startling - not startling with a "now check out my band / product / scene / whatever" riding the coattails.

That's why a lot of the postergasm stuff has Hail Eris written (not typed!) on it in. And that's why Volume Dingus references Kallisti boulevard and PrincipiaDiscordia but does not have a website listed. A simple websearch will point them in our general direction. But if they don't convert to Discord, that's cool with me. I'm being absolutely explicit that I designed these poster sets with zero overt evangelism. The important thing - to me - is that I might have given someone something to talk about around the water cooler or dinner table later on. Or maybe they think "wow, I saw something cool today and it wasn't motivated by money" and realize that THEY can do cool stuff too, on the cheap.

but that's just MY Discordia.

everyone's Discordia is different.

collect all 1024.

I'm kind of where Cram's at, and I couldn't agree more with the statement that everyone's Discordia is different... and it's GOOD that way! If we promote discord our own way, with all of our assorted end-goals, then we're doing our own thing, and that is the way it should be, IMO.

Everyone's area is different, too. In areas that have less interesting stuff going on, one poster with the URL might attract someone's attention. In an area where there's more information/entertainment overload and tons of weird stuff going on all the time, it might take seeing a bunch of different posters with no apparent message or goal to make someone's consciousness click and go "OK, wait, WTF is this all about???"

you know, i will ask around among my friends whether an URL on a poster that captures their interest would actually make them less likely to find out more about that poster, as compared to a poster with just a tag phrase on it that would require remembering the phrase and googling in order to find out more.

personally i don't think it would make me less likely to visit the URL, though i would judge it by the form of the actual URL. myspace.com/discordia suggests it's a crappy band promoting themselves, discordia.blogspot.com tells a different story (doesn't give me a very good feeling, but i'd go there anyway), a full domain like principiadiscordia.com/blog would suggest me something commercial, actually.

so uhm, that makes one "idunno"

i'll ask my friends.

also,

I clicked on the link, but I have NoScript.  :D

Yeah, I hate most ads with a passion.  When the power goes out our microwave alternates between telling you how to reset the clock and flashing "[Brand name] - Simply the Best" and that really pissed me off.

Does anyone (in the US at least) remember those Dorito commercials that college students submitted?  Some of those were really, really good, and I definitely remember going to their site specifically to watch commercials.

I tend not to google / wikipedia a word or phrase unless I'm reading something which assumes knowledge of it and have access to the internetz at the time.  So I'd suggest something like "Google Principia Discordia" on the flyers.  It has more of a "Do your own research!" feel that I think would appeal to our target audience.

See, that's the kind of thing where a URL is good because the rest of the poster is so zany. Anyone who actually reads it could not possibly think it's a real ad.
Title: Re: POSTERGASM
Post by: Triple Zero on March 17, 2008, 11:46:13 AM
very nice.

except for the first four sentences because to me they read to finish with "THEN YOU MAY BE A SNOBISTIC GEEK [no matter what you pathetic fucker like to call your own special world]", which is something that pisses me off even more than finding something i like on TV or following a URL on a poster-ad.
i think it's especially the 3rd and 4th question that makes me feel like it attracts pathetic pineal bobbies like flies on shit.

don't get me wrong, i like the poster, but this is seriously the first thing that pops into my mind, "oh another bunch of college students trying to form a geek squad".

i'd still check it out though, but with a lot of reservations.

maybe my perception is a bit warped due to this messageboard. but on the other hand, i do know several people IRL that occasionally like to be "random", but completely lack in any kind of grace or insight of the execution and cause this sort of hurting UNNG groan deep inside of me. the best bit is when i comment and they answer they don't care what anybody else thinks .. :-(
Title: Re: POSTERGASM

I'd make the advertising non-obstrusive and as small as possible while still being readable.  I mean, literally put it in size 8 font on the bottom left corner of the poster or something.  And only put it on half of them.

If you've set your heart on advertising, that is.

No "maybe" about it. My perception was changed by 132% when I joined this board.

Well guys,
This April Fools is going to be my debut into POSTERGASM.
I am accumulating posters now, and will this Tuesday unleash them on my unsuspecting suburban hometown. If all goes well, they will be everywhere. Hopefully I can get a few pals to join me.
I plan to take pictures too.
:thumb: Keep fighting the good fight.

Last night Chloe and I went out a-postering.

This activity really recharges my batteries. If I'm ever feeling Low Quality, this is one of those things I try to remember to do. It makes me feel like all this talk we do about surviving on the lunatic fringe isn't just abstract masturbation - I'm actually out there doing it.

whatever it is.

But anyway, so we put this one Volume Dingus poster... The BABY FOR SALE one, which turns into an apartment ad.

This guy, about my age, was walking home from his car, and turned the corner as Chloe and I were snickering and putting the final staple into it.

After we passed him, he stopped and read it, and FREAKED OUT. He was laughing his guts out, saying "that's awesome... that's soo awesome." just repeating it over and over again.

In the distance we could still hear him cackling.

It really made my day.

I figured: what kind of unpatriotic bastard would take down the CONSTITUTION?

I'm also gonna try hanging out recognizable art. Like the Mona Lisa, Starry Night, the Scream, and the Persistence of Memory. Maybe whoever's taking down my stuff hasn't figured it out yet, and forcing them to go "oh! ART!" will make them a bit more permissive of the other posters I put up.

OK, so I kind of passed over all the GASM stuff in my inability to keep up with every single freaking thread on this forum. While I'm not a big fan of hanging up flyers (I hated doing it with bands, people hardly ever go beyond reading then ignoring any of those and it conditioned me to look for alternative methods), but I DO like subtly palming stickers.

SO ... what do we have kicking around for 5161-format labels? I'd really like to have a couple "themes", one aimed more at students and one at non-students, that I can put up sneakily on the T or on various signs. Stickers being a bit more of a pain (and a bit more subtle) have more appeal to me as a delivery mechanism, especially ones that use the one-sentence meme-bomb style. So, any links? I'm lazy at work or I'd search around myself  :D

just so we're clear here,

ideally OMGASM is out of our hands. It's Kopyleft and public. It now belongs to the Discordian society, and not just the peedy forums. If people want to write about it, they certainly don't need our permission.

Also, telling people off for promoting OMGASM is pretty much the most counterproductive thing you can do the project.

Everything OMGASM is about, basically, is about promoting OMGASM, the GASMs and the GASMGASM.

POSTERGASM Wiki page updated:

http://www.blackironprison.com/index.php?title=POSTERGASM

it's better organized now. Added some links to some other places.
what do you think? What does it need?

It's very important to tune this page for the general public. This page has been accessed 19,213 times.

For comparison, the BIP front page has only been accessed 8,694 times
and the OMGASM portal only 3,312 times

Try to get in the mindset of someone who just Stumbled in, or clicked through from digg or myconfinedspace.

How does this page look? How can we encourage participation?

Me and a few friends got together this weekend for what we called ShamliCon (a tiny little ripoff of St. Mae's KallistiCon).  I hate having photos taken of anything I'm involved in (photos are evidence, you know), but one of our little group insisted on taking some pics of some posters and the like we distributed.  No, they aren't available right now.  Our photobug insists on using something called 'film,' and further insists on getting it sent out for developing instead of going to a one-hour lab, so don't know when the pics will be in.  But when they are, will scan, will post.

As it happens, St. Mae knew about our little ripoff before hand and thought it was great.  The good saint has no problem with people copying the idea of having a Discordian unconvention, just as Professor Cramulus has no problem with people asking for copies of the good Professor's posters so they can post the same things the professor already posted.

I am currently working on a ferry between Sweden and Germany - if I'd put up posters I would have to make sure to take them down on arrival so nobody from the crew would find them and ask silly questions. After all I am just a "guest" here that takes care of the childrens program and they will easily find out that the pirate not only printed and copied like a madman but also put things up to mindfuck the passengers. Just have to plan a bit but I am sure I can put some stuff up in the bathroom near my workplace and take them down again before anyone suspects me.
However I have been successfully sneaking some pamphlets into the hands of passengers... they always go take a look at the flyer stand near the reception: sorry for bad picture quality, my phone's camera kinda sucks hairy donkey balls sometimes.

On top of that I'm handing out popecards with one-line-memes written on the back to the people. Good times on the Baltic Sea... next up will be the magazine rack in the reception: should be easy to sneak in some papers here and there.

I have yet to participate in this, but that will not last long. It sounds beyond fun. I'll definitely post some stuff around my university come August. Maybe Cainad and I can do some GASMing when we meet up, too. I'll have to talk to him about it. May also do some posting in San Antonio while I'm here, but I don't know how plausible that is. It'd be great fun to mindfuck the Texans, but I don't know that I'll be able to get into San An without my family, so... Anyway, I definitely look forward to doing this.

Out of curiosity, is the offer to mail posters out still open, Cram?

I have yet to participate in this, but that will not last long. It sounds beyond fun. I'll definitely post some stuff around my university come August. Maybe Cainad and I can do some GASMing when we meet up, too. I'll have to talk to him about it. May also do some posting in San Antonio while I'm here, but I don't know how plausible that is. It'd be great fun to mindfuck the Texans, but I don't know that I'll be able to get into San An without my family, so... Anyway, I definitely look forward to doing this.

Out of curiosity, is the offer to mail posters out still open, Cram?

I used to put shit up all over in San Antonio.  There is nothing like putting up posters in a tourist center with national landmarks.  A friend and I used to put up "Forget the Alamo" signs almost daily during our lunch breaks.  (I worked I block from the Alamo)

There is also a ghost tour downtown that you can seriously mess with people.

Can't speak for Cram, but if you pm me some requests I can put together something for you.
Thank you very much. Once my computer is set up (on a crappy laptop right now), I will go through the posters and pm you.

Thanks anyway, Cram.

IDEAS NEEDED:

I just found that the bulletin board with the WANTED posters in it is in a short hallway between the main library and the federal courthouse in my town.  I HAVE to put some stuff there.

The bulletin board in enclosed in glass, so it will be a tape-it-on-as-you-walk-by job.

I hate to rain on the proverbial parade, but I'd be very careful what you post in any government facility in America (or elsewhere, for that matter).  They often have hidden cameras, and any tampering with federal government stuff is considered a federal offense.

Post something on a local telephone pole, and about the worst you'll get is a fine, which likely won't happen.

As long as you are not defacing federal property you are fine (and yes, I am a lawyer).

taping a poster that says "I feel unwanted" next to the bulletin board of wanted posters does not deface government property.

plus, you should always expect there to be cameras and properly case the joint whenever you do this...

Can you give us any more legal tips concerning this particular demonstration of our First Amendment rights?

I mean, I put this shit up EVERYWHERE. And the cops in my town are corrupt as hell. Is there a chance I could actually get fined or something for putting posters up on telephone poles, etc?

Mmmm.  I don't give legal advice.

I don't see how they could fine you for putting up anything, unless they fine people for putting up lost dog posters.  Its an "open forum"...

keep in mind that if they CAN fine you for putting anything up, then they will.

Page 2 (http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa261/broodwitch/33-upmemelabels_Page_2.jpg)

Here is a 33-up label template for adobe acrobat.  (8.5x11 i'm not sure how labels are set up in A4) The template is filled in but if one wants to change the memes just edit the text fields. the first page will allow for multiple memes and the second page will just repeat one text field over the entire sheet of paper. (aka return addresses)

the formatting of the labels is center, arial black.  if you want to change the formatting just right-click the text field with the ADVANCED EDITING TOOL (looks like a black arrow can be found under view -> toolbars) and select Properties. the options are in there. However adobe reader will allow you to edit the texts and print them, but you can't save them.  so go get the full version of adobe acrobat.

i printed out Net's full page labels on clear labels (rather than the white ones) and find that they are a bit more versatile as they blend in with the background better (think windows, posters) than the white ones and tend to be a bit more weather resisitant.

Just wanted to add that if you're at a college campus or other region that requires that flyers be approved before posting, you can take down a poster that's expired, scan it, edit the "Posting Approved until" date, and just print that onto every flyer.  They tend to stay up a bit longer that way.

I've been thinking about a new method of distribution. Instead of hanging them at night I am thinking of demonstrations / protests.
Weather it be the "running of some kids for 1.2km to make the US finally pull out of Iraq" organised by the local socialist movement or some angry pirates and liberals marching and shouting against the surveillance of internet traffic (all exercises in futility); on all these occasions there are dozens of people who hand out flyers. One more handing out completely unrelated stuff won't be suspicious at all.
The additional scoop lies within using their layouts for our propaganda. Next week is another of these "peace runs" and I am in the middle of changing their original flyer to something more "thoughtful". Hopefully I can get a few friends to create a diversion and then change the flyers THEY hand out while people aren't looking, thus saving me a lot of work. ^^

I'll report back next weekend after I tested this out. Does anyone already have experience with this? Wouldn't surprise me if that was already done and I am just slow.  :kingmeh:

DHS might be too large of a target. I can't imagine us spreading enough posters that they actually even notice. I wonder if there are some smaller fish we might hunt? I really like the idea of forcing an organization to issue propaganda wihch invalidates our propaganda. I think part of it is being convincing enough and persistent enough.

Part of the persistence might be to direct some instructions towards whoever might be removing the posters. "Removal or defacement of this sign will result in a $500 fine." That'll keep them up longer.

Tangental thought on the note of Calvinball: "Community Art Space. Painting encouraged."

Local official organizations are a good start, i think...

Game & Fish Departments, Transportation Departments, etc.

I love the idea of causing a storm of propaganda that leaves people not knowing which propaganda to believe or comply with. The main obstacle here is materials. Plain copy paper doesn't come across as authentic quite as well as metal signs. But I'm sure there are ways around that.

Also, I agree about including warnings against removing the signs.

I've found a couple of bulletin boards around work to do some PosterGASMing on.  This one is right next to one of the shipping offices and has been up since Friday which means 1) No one has noticed/read it or 2) People are reading it and doing what it says.

I did not put up the "Report Suspicious Behavior and Activity" one.  That one is actually SRS.

lol i think what makes a successful postergasm is the meme itself and the method by which it's applied.  that one was quite obvious as to how it should be applied.  you sould do it in braile and leave it around blind folks to find.

I also put up those homeland security cellular phone posters in the breakrooms, and they have been up there for weeks now without comment....

If you're planning on slowly ramping up the absurdity of the requests made in the name of national security, remember that metal pens, steel-toed boots, bottled water, cans of soda, and talking at water coolers all pose grave threats to national security.

This little fella dates back from WWII, but I think it still looks relevant enough to hang in your break room.

we actually have replicas of WWII propaganda all over the place.  Loose lips sink ships, and all.  I'll have to scan some of it.
as for the steel pens and what not, they actually did pass a thing around about a year ago asking us to declare all exotic metals for some OSHA thing or something, and on the list was steel.  no qualifier calling out rare alloys or anything; just ....steel.  they got a lot of guffaws for that.  people sent it document clips and pens etc.

Proof that satire is dead, because the real world is already even more bizarre.

Maybe find German WWII propaganda posters with essentially the same slogans as the posters that are already up, and put them up across from the existing poster?

The original one is still up after 2 weeks.  I'm beginning to wonder if anyone has actually read it.  I know that at least a dozen people pass it every single day.  If that one gets taken down I'm definitely putting one of the Calvinball/Homeland Security posters in it's place.

I also, inadvertently, MF my wife.  I had forgotten that I put a poster up in our apt. building's laundry room. She texted me about it tonight and I acted like I had no idea how it got there.  :D

In a few weeks, after more of my classmates know how to read the International Phonetic Alphabet, I plan to make posters with a phonetic transcription of the following, in German:
Linguists!
Freedom is a verb!

I will then hang this up in areas where we have classes.
Laffs shall ensue.

While I'm still kinda irked at the miscommunication that lead to Cram's disappointment @ the door @ EsoZone, we did manage to spread some postergasm goodness. Thanks for coming back on Sunday, Cramulus.

(http://miqel.com/esozone_2008/thumbnails/free_speech-zone.jpg) (http://miqel.com/images_1/esozone_2008/free_speech-zone.jpg)

This was posted on the front door to EsoZone late Saturday evening.

By Sunday morning we had actually induced a 1st Circuit freakout (bio-survival panic) in one woman.

She apparently asked Johnny Brainwash (who was working the door) if it was a "real poster", to which he replied, "Of course it's a 'real poster'."

I'm pretty sure she got the joke later.

The crowd really liked the PosterGASM posters. Enough to start editing them on the walls.

The task administered to the dead salmon in the fMRI machine involved completing an open-ended
mentalizing task. The deceased salmon was shown a series of photographs depicting human
individuals in social situations with a specified emotional valence. The salmon was
asked to determine what emotion the individual in the photo must have been
experiencing.

For added lulz, this is a real, documented scientific case study (designed to point out the uncertainty in our minds/tools, probably).

The point is, go look at it, it is MADE OF AWESOME. Now go POST IT EVERYWHERE.

(...on second thought, anyone want to shoop some erisiana on it first and re-host it? It deserves to be a genuine piece Discordian artifact.)

Then GO POST IT EVERYWHERE.

It's just a reminder (albeit an extremely eloquent one) than you can't generate statistically significant information with a sample size of 1.  Good to know, but I don't see how it's a big deal?  We knew that already, right?

Then again, this is a country where a certain breakfast cereal, which shall go nameless, makes the claim that eating it during breakfast gives greater powers of concentration, even referring to it in commercials as a "focusizer" which is apparently a school supply of some kind.  They even have a scientific study with a control to back it up!  Unfortunately, the control was a group of children who did not eat breakfast at all.

God damn, but we need to start teaching the scientific method in elementary school.

And cheap, too!

They'll get cheaper, now that I've shooped a master with 8 stickers instead of 6.

25 sheets of 8.5X11 laser crack & peel: $12.95

Color copies:  $0.59/each (using laser for the glossy finish, but inkjet at home would be even cheaper)

Less than 40 bucks for 200 stickers.

Our target population is Tucson:  Slightly liberal, broke, in a city that leans on everyone just a little more every year.

Suggestions: You can probably fit twice the amount per page which would cut your costs in half too.

Just thicken that outer black line a bit, rotate them 45° so the edges are parallel to the page, and arrange them so that the edges touch.

I will post a sketch if that doesn't make sense.  Those look great, by the way, especially the Helvetica Condensed.

Also, a minor point, if you'd like to use the current typeface that is  on road signs in many parts of the world,  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FHWA_Series_fonts)(at least until the new one is implemented in the US, which probably won't be for quite a while) it is "Highway Gothic," and available here for free. Thanks.

The font is Arial with faux-bold, I know that much.

But the weird holes and strange aliasing on top of that nightmare is oddly compelling.

When things get so bad in so many different ways, the double negatives become so dense that it implodes within itself into pure awesome.

I mean "bad" according to well established design "rules."  They are quite sensible guidelines but it gets bland as hell when people slavishly adhere to any sort of canned standard.

It's refreshing to see someone experimenting with typography rather than leaving it to the milquetoast default settings.

Most people, and sometimes myself included, have these irrationally conservative ideas about setting type and the HORRORS of affecting legibility in the SLIGHTEST!

OH GAWD, IT'S SLIGHTLY HARDER TO READ!!!1

HOW DARE YOU MAKE AN SOMETHING THAT ISN'T INSTANTANEOUSLY COMPREHENSIBLE!

IF MOSTLY BLIND PEOPLE CAN'T READ IT FROM ACROSS THE STREET, WE'RE DOOOOOOOOOMED!

WHOA I WANT GOOGLEY EYES

in fact a few people mentioned earlier (months back) things they did with those eyes (I think it was Squid) and I wanted to do just that.

So yeah the "I could do that" angle is very powerful in this one.

In fact I rambled about how I wanted self-adhesive googley eyes so much that my gf actually went to a crafts store and wanted to buy some for me, only to find out they were truly ridiculously expensive, like 5 euros for a dozen or so. [unsure if it was a dozen pairs or a dozen eyes]

What'd you pay for yours?

Oh hay and Net, your remark about "faux-bold Arial" gave me an insight on how to do the horribly holed crunchy lettering, maybe. If you convert the (regular cursive Arial) letters to a selection outline, and then instead of Grow it for faux-bold, you use the Selection Border operation for 1-3 pixels width or so. All with anti-aliasing off, of course. At medium-to-low font sizes this should give you the desired faux-bold crunchy effect.

When a friend had me over, but had to step out on his own for a bit, I was left alone in his apartment for about a half an hour.

That was months ago, and he is still finding eyes on things.

The secret:  I have also given agents in his area sticky eyes to put on things.  He recently found eyes on the bottom of his toilet seat, and he actually believed I put them there.  He was impressed, and wants me to die so much now.

HAHAHAHAHA!  Recruits!

Also, you know I found that recruiting the young is super easy.  Kids LOVE stickers soooo it's a natural sort of thing for them to put the googly eyes in silly places.  My kids also help encourage the endeavor.  You give them a nice handful of googly eyes and they just go to town.

So, Stephen has jumped onto PosterGASM (kind-of). He totally shocked Jack White of the White Stripes by initiating a PosterGASM capaign for the newest album out of Jack's company.

Look at the expression on Jack's face when Stephen says "I want Community Associations to write me angry letters about how this is all over the place."

Jack, a moment later quips, "What's the Colbert Bump?"

Stephen - "You, M-therf-cker, are about to find out!"

I've been trying to pepper my college campus with some PosterGASM, but I am too unclever to invent anything witty or standoutty, so I'd like to, with permission, steal some wit from the masters.

However, when I do the flikr posterGASM link thing, I just get an insane number of images of posters already up in the wild.

So, my 2-part question.

1:  Is everyone okay with me stealing their wit and hanging it randomly all over the University of Wisconsin?  (So far I've just been duct taping the "christopher walken is watching you pee" poster to every stall, even in female restrooms, on campus)

2:  If #1 is okay, where can I find the originals or printable versions of some oddball posterGASM's I can use to make people WTF?

Thanks!

we ABSOLUTELY ARE!

we did not make hundreds of posters so that they could sit in a box in my closet and collect dust

No permission necessary, but granted nonetheless.

I just realized that I never updated my prior post, in case anyone is interested.

I put up Volume Aleph, Dingus, and Calvinball, all over campus.  By the very next day more then half of the flyers had been taken down =(.  Each day since, I notice even more missing.  The upside is I know people are noticing them, I've heard random conversations about some of them, and I know for sure that every single one was noticed at least by the person(s) taking them down.

The first ones to come down were, of course, the "Miscarriage is manslaughter" and "Christian Dating" ones, as I put them on the bulletin normally used by the Campus Crusade for Christ, which is the college evangelist nutjob society that are the pushiest and most self-righteous in-your-face group we have.  In fact, we had an event last year with a local senator come to campus, and since one of her things was anti gay marriage, the local LGBT (or is it LBGT?  I dunno, it's the gays) group staged a peaceful protest out front, and tons of other student not even a part of the club joined in to help make the senator feel "welcome".  As I think being against gay marriage is retarded, I too joined in, but the church nutjobs did a thing of their own in support of the senator and had their anti-protest protest stand in front of us being lame.  Anyway I got off topic.

There's still one more volume I haven't done, but since the bulletin boards on campus get cleared at the end of the month, I'm going to wait until the first before I put them up.  Also I'm going to buy a fuckton of googley eyes because those pics I saw are hilarious!

Anyway, thanks for the lulz folks!  Everything I heard from students about your posters was positive!  Except for the Evangelists of course, but insults from them can be taken as a compliment.

I'm afraid not.  I've been meaning to get myself a camera, or borrow someone's cellphone, but haven't gotten around to it.  Most of my free time is spent mucking about in my microbiology lab teaching myself mycology.

(http://img577.imageshack.us/img577/599/surpriseinthecorner.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/577/surpriseinthecorner.jpg/)

has been left up longer than any others I've left around campus and downtown.*  No, the one that's not the boob.  The 'gulik juice' poster has lasted 2 months and counting, while the rest usually come down within the week.  If you (whoever is reading this) invented it, you are the awesomeness.

(*Except for that one sticky note "your friend likes this" which is still on the glass bookcase in my department almost a year after the fact.  I love seeing that thing every day.)

For college campuses, there's an easy way to help make your shit look "official".

Just find an already posted flier with a clean stamp of approval (I assume it's quite standard to have to validate fliers for posting...) Scan that and shop the expiration date. rotate to random orientations and print over existing fliers.

I had trouble keeping fliers up at my community college- that small detail was pretty good at extending the life of some.

I just wanted to bump this back up because I saw somebody say before that GASM's are dead.

If you think that is true, please don't forget that some of us operate with the KYFMS system and don't bother reporting on it here.  I bragged a bit during my very first round of throwing up posters, but in the large amount of time since then, my cabal has stolen many of the posters and other GASM ideas and material and spread the Eris, without reporting in.

Please do not close or give up on GASMs just because direct immediate participation may suffer.  Remember those of us who are not original and shamelessly steal good ideas and put them out there quietly.  Not to mention all of the things here we didn't copy verbatim but that inspired our own somewhat related missions.

You may not always see all the results of the brilliance you guys put out on the internets, but it definitely reaches farther than it would seem to.

I never thought of GASMs as a movement, that "could die".  I thought they were more like activities.  Like saying a GASM is dead is like saying coloring a coloring book is dead. It's not even a comment to worry about.

I've seen a lot of posterGASM-like material from (seemingly) non-discordian sources in the past year or two. I can't say if this is a success, a cynical re-appropriation by the Spectacle, or just something relating to awareness or the group I associate with. But, if we don't do posterGASM, the straights will -- and while I don't have strong feelings either way about that, it might push some decisions.

When you say, (seemingly) non-discordian sources, do you mean the material does not seem to convey the type of humor or style that a Discordian is likely to use, or do you just mean that you don't recognize the posters themselves from any of the posterGASM collections you've seen?

I'm just wondering if those posters are, themselves, not Discordian at all in nature, or just not from a recognizable discordian source.

I'm finding it hard to come up with words today, my head is in a weird place, apologies if my question is confusing or stupid

They are coming from known sources who are not known to be discordian and do not publicly address the issue.
