Title: Dead thread - posted in error
Post by: Bogus Magus on June 05, 2007, 12:35:26 PM
Just a mistake from a nOOb.

Sorry to waste your time.

The following responses answered some stupid shit I posted to try to be funny. I haven't edited myself to make them look stupid, but because I know nothing of online forum behaviour, and attracted a deserved (if over the top) kicking.

Not that some people will let it drop, because apparently they just like kicking people when they're down, and apologies are pointless, and probably display weakness.  I just find 2nd Circuit stuff boring far too quickly.

But I apologise anyway - and will lurk, or try to make intelligent contributions when I feel I have something to add.

I'll post the same text at the end.  What more can I say?

You might not be able to notice this, but we DON'T GIVE A RAT'S ASS ABOUT POSTCOUNT.

LHX came in here guns blazin', and had 10 good threads before he reached 50 posts.

At the same time, I, with my... shit, I dunno, 10k+ posts, still get flamed for saying stupid shit.

Stop complaining about your postcount, and start posting things of substance & defending your ideas.  That's all we really care about.

heh.

I didn't complain about my post count. I complained about the word 'noob'.

but blah blah blah [edit]

I shouldn't provoke people - even if I enjoy it.
Title: Re: Revolt of the noobs
Post by: Lies on June 05, 2007, 01:29:45 PM
Please note, seriously- people here don't care about your post count.

In case you've missed it, there was a dude called AKK, he posted heaps of shit and drivel and eventually we just ignored him till he went away.
We gave him many, many, many chances to redeem himself, but he had the habit of choosing to still be a complete and utter cock fail.

Go and post a good rant in the "or kill me section", and you'll gain instant respect, regardless of post count.
Go and post something totally inane and stupid and unfunny anywhere, and you'll have a lot of flames to put out.
And for the love of god, don't post anything while you're high/drunk and expect people will think it's as clever as your stoned mind perceives it, chances are, it's not.

Also, there are not many rules here, no spamming, no kiddie porn, pretty much, but if you say something stupid, the rules of no rules say that we can call you on stupidity.

Now, take a few deep breaths, let that oxygen fill your brain... and then keep posting.

Just sayin.

Heh.  I find it amusing that a word is bothering you.

I do have a question, however:  If you've been lurking here, you must have recognized the way these forums go.  As such, I find it interesting you seem to have such a problem with it, and yet you registered anyway.  Why is that?

Also, why do you assume that because it says "noob" under your avatar, no one will pay attention to your ideas?

I, for one, am interested in anything new you have to bring to the table.

I'll put this on the record:  If you, in this thread, post something new and interesting, I promise to treat it with all the respect it deserves.

The plain fact is that most n00bs (myself included) are deluded prats, who think they have found a safe haven where they can rave about numerology, indulge in humour with little more wit than your average fart joke, and indulge in meaningless dada bullshit which -hopefully- might be mistaken as clever by someone else as stupid as themselves.

Not everybody, mind you - no rule is true.  But a LOT.  Again, myself included.  I completely deserved the ass that was handed to me.

It gave me something to think about.  Did I 'conform' to the norm?  No.  But did I think I would be able to get away with ANYthing without being critiqued?  No again.

It's true, n00b, you are not in a vacuum here . . . people have opinions, and when you make a post, whether you believe it or not, you are putting yourself in a position where you are asking for feedback.  If you believe you are writing a blog here, think again.

Not only SHOULD people be coming back at you, but it is the POINT OF THE FORUM.

So STFU, and use your head.

We didn't coin the word 'noob', for one. And for two, get the fuck over it. Kthx. I had to deal with the 50 post rule myself. I made my noob mistakes, had my fair share of flames, fuck, just like LMNO said, every now and then I'll STILL get flamed for saying something stupid.

If you want to be embraced on this board, you need to be prepared to run through the fire; inane title or not. And if you don't agree: cop a walk.

This forum is where the cool kids hang out.

You wanna be here then step the fuck up.

We want to like noobs but it doesn't happen very often.

Most humans are crap.

If you can't stand up to a bit of light hearted hazing and having to wear the noob hat for a while then you probably aren't the droids we're looking for.

[I am editing my agent provocateur posts, but I'll leave this as a sample, otherwise it will look as though I did nothing to deserve it]
:)
Hey can,Äôt you read?  It says ,ÄúNOOBS ONLY,Äù on the door. I wanted this thread to be a place where fellow nOObs could feel safe to speak up with their first 50 posts (ah that's the secret number). After all, I can,Äôt surprise or astonish any of you with something original until I have read your 230,000+ fascinating posts (and then some) to find out what,Äôs been already said, and what you know. Could take me a while. You mean I can,Äôt speak until I,Äôve read the whole damned forum? Fuck that.  And no, LMNO I haven't been lurking here, I just dropped by a day or so ago, after putting a link to yer excellent version of Principia Discordia on the OM blog. Decided to check out the forum, to see if I should link to that, too.

So either rejoin with a new avatar and a fresh start, delete yer posts down to less than 50 (if that resets yer title to nOOb) or fuck off, all of you. (It,Äôs fun this not being polite to strangers, isn,Äôt it, but I,Äôd find it boring after a while.) Oh, wait, I already find it boring after ten seconds.

Oh, did I miss the irony of you all steaming in here like the nightmare Tibetan Demon guard dogs of my imagination?

You did it to prove my point? Ah, thanks, then.

Meanwhile, fellow new members, if yer lurking,Ķyou could just PM me, and we could keep it quiet until we know the place.

Actually, it's becoming pretty clear.

He's probably a long-time RAW fan, and has absorbed a lot of his stuff-- If I recall, he's even part of the Maybe Logic academy.

In terms of Discordia, he can be considered Old School.

So, he wanders over to Principia Discordia, and sees a bunch of (to him) kids, and he gets (auto generated) labeled a noob, and he gets upset because they're being rude, and are far more caustic and cynical and sardonic than he was expecting, and he notices that we don't have much outright respect for RAW.

So, he calls us on it, and we respond in kind.

I have a feeling that he didn't notice that many of us already learned a lot of the RAW stuff, and went somewhere else with it.  So, when he comes at us with E-Prime, and Maybe Logic, and the PD, he's not really telling us anything new.
Title: Re: Revolt of the noobs
Post by: Suu on June 05, 2007, 02:29:41 PM
He linked to the Maybe Logic blog in his profile, so that's pretty obvious.

But hell, apparently this noob can teach us a thing or two about some of the 'ould wayes' and we can educate him on our 'advanced' Discordianism.

...Or we can refer him to MW so he can be a path guide.

Fine, LMNO, I live out here - just came for a wander around after spending far too much time on ONE FORUM. You know how it is.

Easily done. I outpost people all the time...(I work online, and play online) but have only got up to about 500 posts, not thousands, and I already think I should knock it off and go write a book!

I just wanted to mingle with people really new here - seemed like a simple enough thought - but I guess my usual provocative approach sets people off. Or are you all very bored?

no, seriously, I think you have heaps of potential- but you really have to stop crying over nothing, if you can't take a bit of a thrashing from your fellow discordians- how the fuck are you going to handle talking to cabbages that are hostile to our ideas?

Go consult your fucking peniel gland and make another post saying you've realised that your an idiot and that your cup is now empty.

Actually, I am a n00b. I just happen to have passed 150 posts, which switches my title to Scat Granny. But I've only been posting here since mid-May. I just have a really boring office job, so I post A LOT. Some might say too much. :p

The point is, n00bhood isn't about post number. As you'll note, Lysergic, SillyCybin, etc, all know that I'm still new around here, regardless of how many posts I have.

If we are judging who are the "little people" based on something as ridiculous as post numbers, well, we might as well just start putting penis size in signatures so we'll know who to respect.

Oh, and sweet baby jesus on a pogostick, just post new posts instead of obsessing about 23. First off, it's pointless. Second off, if you choose to respond to things that we say, we will rarely, if ever, see. That is not a good way to have a dialogue, which you claim to want to have. You want to be taken seriously and treated with respect? Then treat the rest of the forum members with enough respect to not make us go mining for your responses to what we have to say. Unless I get REALLY bored at work today, I know I won't go digging for them, and other people probably won't either. And voila, dialogue = dead. OOPS.

Ah - creating a thread is obsessing, sorry. Just a new word to me, is all.  Do I get the option to delete my thread?

I just wanted to invite anyone as new as me around here to come and chat. They didn't. I'm sorry. Now I seem to have upset you all, or provoked a reaction much bigger than I intended.

And as for ageist shit, well, 'nuff said.  I don't seek respect.  I just came to chat.

You should know as well as anyone, that when lacking historical knowledge of a character, their actions take on a more significant meaning.

Also, when asked questions (a great way of figuring out who a person is), you failed to provide answers that gave insight.

Bogus Magus,

don't take this shit too personally. The real difference IMO between a n00b and not-a-n00b is that we not-n00bs kind of know each other at this point. Many of us spend hours a day hanging out here and have gotten to know each others internet persona's pretty well. We're like friends.

It takes a long time to get to know someone over a text medium. So to me, n00b means someone I don't know that well yet. Or someone that hasn't gotten the hang of the social norms of this place. A higher post count doesn't help me get to know you any better, so it won't help anyone "fit in".

I also think that the word "we" is often misused around here. Like when LMNO said "we don't like RAW", it's the kind of thing that reifies the "us" vs "you" illusion. I for one, like it RAW. Oh baby I like it RAW.

We're harsh on newbs around here, true. But that's because this url attracts a certain type of Discordian that doesn't really click here. I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. It's not a hazing period, it's separating the wheat from the chaff.

Around here one needs to defend and refine their ideas constantly - that's how okay ideas become great ideas. That's how the Black Iron Prison project evolved. In a way, that's our brand of being really real Discordians.

So all that being said, can you see why posting a thread which encourages newbs to bump their post count was met with hostility?

Honestly Magus, you seem to be an intelligent and well spoken individual. I think you would fit in well here - we need new blood and new perspectives otherwise we're all just masturbating each other. But I advise you not to approach the board with an attitude of changing it. It is what it is. The newbs do not need a savior. They need spartan conditions. and this is spartaaa. *cough*

So take a breather. don't quit just 'cause some people are jerks to yuo. They're doing what needs to be done. This isn't a forum where people feel they have to be nice and polite to everyone, and in that it's one of the internet's few safe havens of truly free speech.

You want to chat then chat iirc that's what most of the noobs who I've seen stick around did (myself included)

Instead you pretend you're the kind of arsehole we've seen countless times and (some of us) enjoy flaming the shit out of til they leave.

So basically, what I'm saying is I've enjoyed your presence so far - you wanna chat? Then chat already. That's what this forum is for. Wanna play noob some more and I can practice my put downs some more then carry on - I'm on the mofo.

Is this what you expected or hoped to find? Do we meet some criteria that you've decided to test? Personally I don't happen to take this as an insult but some people might.

Just saying

thanks ppl.

I'll go lurk.

I know you all know each other, and teasing goes on between friends. I've known some of the folks at MLA for 3 years now, and we talk in shorthand.  I guess we have only ever had to calm down a couple of people who arrived there after reading Hyatt's "Psychopath's Bible, etc.

I haven't taken offence yet. I poked the wasp's nest, and got a response. Fair enough.

If the thread annoys you, then get yer admin to delete it...I've already messed around with editing myself, and such, so some of what I originally said only appears in quotes now.

I didn't mean to pretend to be anyone. I realise you must get quite a lot of dickheads...so next time I would start a 'playpen for beginners'. Not that one true nOOb braved the waters here to help me out, so fuck 'em.

Good answer Bogus. Congratulations on being able to go from whining to thinking--many do not manage.

I lurked here for a good month and a half before I started posting. Obviously that much time isn't needed, but get a feel for the place to see if it is your cup of tea or not. Continue actually hearing what people say and I imagine you'll do fine.

The purpose of the 50 post rule is to provide an opportunity to have the sandpit moment without having to have a specifically sanctioned "playpen" as it were, complete with adult supervision and padded corners and extra-big pencils to make everything easier. No no no. Everyone gets the 50 posts so that they can safely leap into the fray and participate. Newbs learn very little from interacting with each other, whereas they WILL learn by interacting with board veterans. Likewise, board veterans will get more out of newbs if the newbs contributes to the forum instead of just masturbating each other.

You have potential, so I would recommend dropping this idea of newb safety zone and experimenting with really getting into the thick of the board. There's so much good stuff here; don't miss out on it because of an idea that, well, obviously isn't working. I'm the only other newb who has shown up here, so evidently this newb cuddlefest isn't going to happen. Move on to bigger and better things while you still have less than fiddy posts.

Well, come on now. I didn't go out of my way to be an asshole either. I invited fellow newbies into one thread to share their confusion, and got stomped by people who've been here for years.

I don't care, but I don't see where the problem lies.

I'd have put it somewhere more discrete, but it said:

Talk about the book. Ask questions. Pick each other's brains. Pick fleas out of each other's fur. We don't care.

Foolish of me, I know, but I believed the heading.

If you can't change a forum, how the fuck can you expect to change yourself or the world? I got my BIP, you got yours.

If you think that was stomping, you clearly haven't seen focused forum hate. People have been relatively diplomatic in trying to explain why you're catching heat and you're still playing the "everyone is so mean to me, the veterans are all assholes!" card.

these kids have been relatively nice to you.

If you want to see what these forums are like when you actually piss people off, check this  (http://www.principiadiscordia.com/forum/index.php?topic=12841.0) out.

I think you may be confusing that heading with "In this forum no one will critique you and everyone is nice to each other." If that were true, this forum would be full of garbage. (as opposed to now where it's mostly garbage)

Hey ho. Well,  have no fear.

Someone just popped into MLA to shout "fuck you!" (http://www.maybelogic.net/index.php?option=com_fireboard&Itemid=38&func=view&id=4511&catid=3&limit=10&limitstart=10) which really impressed the locals. So I guess you could say "we're even".  If I had any caution I'd have used an anonymous avatar. As a relatively unarmoured entity I still blunder about in a good-natured way - assuming goodwill.

And there I was, hoping for a little creative exchange... (sigh) they're just ephemeral words on a screen guys, and I already found far more interesting parts of the PD site to read.

BIP seems a fascinating project, and the Quantum thread already intrigues me, and I intend (outside of this thread) to show respect.

But this thread won't go away, or sink into oblivion, and I don't need a nOOb safety zone or anything, so I have REALLY contributed to the Chaos and Confusion now.

So it goes.

Foolish of me, I know, but I believed the heading.

Hey ho.

If you can't change a forum, how the fuck can you expect to change yourself or the world? I got my BIP, you got yours.

Why do you want to change it though? Is there something YOU object to? This forum HAS changed in the past, and likely will in the future. There have been two major structural and "nettiquette" shifts in the past handful of years, and constant minor fluctuations. Just because it isn't changing the way you might want it to, doesn't mean that change is not happening.

In the past few months, I've been and seen "noobs" wander in. I took a look around, was interested by what I saw, made and continue to make some contribution to the place and move ideas here forward. Does whatever number or title I have by my (made up) avatar name matter at all in how those ideas are received? Not that I'm aware of. Does the fact that I lurked for a week before diving in make a difference? Not that I've seen.

Then again, I place no special importance on any of it, so it's not one of the "buttons" you seem so intent on pushing. If that's all you want to do, well then maintain the "confusion for the sake of confusion." If you want to take part in the dialogue of the forums (and really, why post at all if you don't?) then by all means do so.

I've probably written 3 times as many posts as I've actually hit the Post button for, because I proofread it and make sure I'm saying what I want to say. If I get something wrong I hope I get corrected. If I piss some people off, I hope they let me know. I hope that what I say sparks a discussion, not an argument or a flamefest. That's just me, though. Others around here love to hear the crackle of the fire.

Saying that you value one approach over another is fine with me. However, saying that one approach or another is better for ME (or anyone else, for that matter) when you are not me, is something that many people have taken objection to. I'm certainly open to suggestions, but I prefer to change my ways based on a convincing argument based on evidence rather than solely on the objections of someone else.

If you wanted to push our buttons (and from what I've seen since I've been here, this is only a mild reaction), why does it appear that we're pushing yours just as much?

Just a mistake from a nOOb.

Sorry to waste your time.

The preceding responses answered some stupid shit I posted to try to be funny. I haven't edited myself to make them look stupid, but because I know nothing of online forum behaviour, and attracted a deserved (if over the top) kicking.

Not that some people may let it drop, because apparently they just like kicking people when they're down, and apologies are pointless, and probably display weakness.  I just find 2nd Circuit stuff boring far too quickly.

But I apologise anyway - and will lurk, or try to make intelligent contributions when I feel I have something to add.

I have posted the same information at the beginning of the thread.  What more can I say?

The post that was here, I was attempting to respond to...you edited it again, making your little words disappear...

Fuck me you're spineless...

In reponse to you're statement that we've got SOME intelligent people here, and SOME dickheads here....
you're only half right...

We've got Intelligent Dickheads...  TGRR being among my favourites...

to paraphrase.

Believe it or not TGRR is one hell of a human being, he just needs noobish idiots to throw inanity at him for the rest of his life.

...

Anyway, there's no point there...

Stop worrying about making amends for the stupidity you've demonstrated so far.  Simply say "I see, I was an idiot..."  And then never speak again of your rampant idiocy, move into a shining new world where you interact and contribute, instead of just sitting in the manure pile complaining about how everyone keeps lumping shit onto you.

Also...go take a shower, you smell like manure...

if you see the responses to your posts as merely territorialism and tribal power games, I caution you may be missing the point.

Somewhere along the line, someone mentioned how all the "high post count" people seem to be controlling things. To me, this is another great illustration of the Law of Fives - if you're looking for second-circuit bullshit, you tend to see it everywhere.

I won't disagree that there's a lot of dick waving and shouting that goes on here, but if that bugs you, ignore it. It's not the point, it's the tone. A lot of people are rude or mean out of boredom, or for the lulz - not the need to lord themselves over someone else. And yes, some of them shit hate for fun, but that doesn't mean they don't have anything cool to say.

in conclusion, I do hope you'll make the decision to stick around - or not - based on something other than getting sneered at by a few people. It happens. And if you let it get under your skin, aren't you just engaging in the second-circuit submissive role?  :p

See that's exactly the problem with some Discordians.  That MLA forum is a perfect example.

They set them selves up in a little bubble reality, pretending that all other Discordians will think exactly like them, talk exactly like them, and all be interested in the same things.  They might as well live in a gold submarine in the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean.

Someone sticks their head into their club and says something they don't expect (eg: "Fuck you") and they all pat each other on the back and exchange 'there but for the grace of Eris' natter natter natter . . .  Well, guess what?  Some people express themselves by saying things like "fuck you".  It happens out here in what we lovingly refer to as IRL.

Little ponds are fine, but that's all they are . . . you can't delude yourself to believe that all other "Discordians" are going to behave exactly as you think they should, or exhibit what you believe is a courteous manner.  Some Discordians are assholes, some aren't - such is life.

Eh, sorry, but not all member of MLA consider themselves Discordians, I feel fairly sure. [not that I can speak for them all, of course]. Actually, I don't consider myself a Discordian, either, but I didn't know you had to, just to talk to people who like to label (libel) themselves.

As the first person to feel the urge to say 'Fuck You'  in 'nice, polite' MLA (to a rich magickian who reckoned the US economy had got destroyed by the Mexican immigrants - a concept that genuinely deserved that response, and no other) I felt quite pleased to see it posted for the second time. Thanks. I don't feel so alone.

1.  Knowing the 8-curcuit model doesn't mean that the lower curcuits no longer apply.  One thing we're finding out here is that noble aspirations are fine, but we're still goddamn monkeys.

2.  You say you wanted to exchange ideas.  Didn't you say before that you don't debate your ideas?  I'd find the quote, but you probably edited it.

3.  START OFFERING UP IDEAS, INSTEAD OF POSTING IN THIS THREAD.

Thanks LMNO.

I just keep seeing new posts in a thread I wanted to let die, so I drop back in.

I may have said that I don't debate ideas in this thread when acting the asshole, but in general I have posted a couple of simple things elsewhere on the site, and happily discuss/debate them with anyone. And no, I don't randomly delete/edit posts in the normal course of events.

I just don't think I have anything new to tell you guys, it seemed to me, (you made it pretty clear) as most of you didn't seem that interested in the MLA.

I'll go read the BIP stuff, and stop feeling tempted to answer back.

And the theoretical knowledge of the 8-Circuit system doesn't make much difference, maybe, but I recommend Antero Alli's very practical (get away from that computer) course.  I did it about a year ago, and he's running it again right now.  Great stuff.  Over and Out.

So basically they're separating pinks from their green.

I don't know, obviously I'm biased, but I think there's something to be said about being able to debate with like minds about certain topics you are interested in.

Sure, you could start a forum based on that type of thing, or even just chat in a regular forum (such as this, in case you weren't paying attention) but its hard to get people to do readings so that everyone is on the same page (eh, so to speak) and to keep people on topic.  Paying money has a way of keeping people focused.  Its really not overly expensive, and if you're a fast-talking shyster like me you can even ge in for a reduced fee.

Still cheaper than the Golden Dawn, or Scientology.

Although not as cheap as masturbation . . .

It will be place where Enrico can play with the n00bs, wrestle with the n00bs, place thumb inside moist cavities of the n00bs . . . not teo mention some loving discipline!  How is ANYTHING fun without a leather glove with sharp studs on the palm slapping you on the face until you scream "PAULA ABDUL"?  The answer is:  it is no.

I agree about paying customers, and it does mean we don't have to surround such talk with barbed wire (or barbed comments) - but then you still get the whingers who complain the course material isn't what they expected for their money. I remember RAW getting pretty fed up with such types, given that the whole thing was an experiment anyway.

And right now, with the dollar/pound exchange rate the way it is, it seems real cheap to people from the UK!

Bump.

Because Bogus Magus is still butthurt.

QuoteAh well, I ain't gonna re-read it all. I never thought I'd see this thread again.

As the person who originally wandered out of this delightful MLA zone, (all naive about internet) with my hippie-trippy smile, looking for like-minded people, I shambled into the Principia Discordia site (wanting to link it, as I have, on the Only Maybe blog) and tried to open a thread for fellow newbies, after finding myself mistaken (?) for some naive idiot. Cosmic Schmuck, yes. Naive idiot? Only about money.

I then did a little local provocation by trying to create a self-referential Ourouboros thread (which had worked over here) and just succeeded in annoying the natives. (you can't keep re-editing your posts, apparently, it confuses people, and the timeline of linear conversation!)

I played around, got flamed, had a few amiable words by PM with people there who said they had too often been invaded by 'silly' people (or whatever you call young people who just discovered the joys of acting wicked, anarchic, noisy and stuff). I felt mildly upset that no-one recognised intelligence and provocativeness when they saw it, then made my apologies and left.

No hard feelings. We had a few jokes upon my return to this tribe, as I told the story of the big, wide, wicked world and my 'adventures' - and I never thought I'd see this thread again!

If you could see the earlier incarnations of this 'friendly forum' you'd know I did a bit of guard-dog myself - and got notorious for it at times...really wound up some of the magick folk.

So you can put me down as 'hypocrite', too.

I missed the gentleness, and the sense of humour (humor) with which we attempted to deal with people who came in and kicked off, here. (And I don't mean the mechanical 'spam' that got pretty annoying, but real people).

Many stayed, some became friends and regulars, others moved on. I, myself, calmed down, tried to 'graduate' after three years here, and no longer feel any need to defend the ethos.

But it remains the same.

If you can't achieve tolerance, at least attempt courtesy.

RAW made it quite clear that he had E-Primed that on purpose. Don't think of it as "If you can't be tolerant, at least be courteous." The struggle seems more evident, between attempting and achieving.

Oh, did I say this before? A new generation might prefer to feel 'doomed' and gloomy about the Black Iron Prison (I love a bit of PKD myself), but I prefer Bob and Bucky's mad optimism. And the jokes.

Just a personal preference.

Over at MLA (Maybe Logic Academy) he did say he was being intentionally argumentative.

Here's some snippets from his posts at MLA, during this incident:

Bogus wrote:

I started one slightly venomous sarcastic thread [I'd just been beaten up like my friend who just got mugged for the fifth time in Springfield, Illinois] for newbies to hang out in, and now it won't go away, and I started a fucking war, it seems.  Believe it or not, I empathise with Bush/Blair for a moment. :woohoo:

The PMs I have had back from ppl make it sound as though I could fit in, but if the job involves kicking new people then I don't want it.  I like to welcome new people in, and find how to get them to tune in, so we can have some fun! People I don't like I either ignore or walk away from. Simple stuff, seems like there's loads of room.

It reminds me (did Borsky call it Beirut out there?) of my month in Israel (oh, dunno, back in the 80s) when I simply couldn't find what the fight was about, between two Semitic peoples with slightly different belief systems  - based on the same stories! Cousins. Living in a tough climate.  But I don't have any knowledge of how you solve these things. The Brits haven't sorted out Northern Ireland in 300 years. (oh, cousin religions again, can I see a pattern?)

Planet of the Apes, mate.  But I do regret it if I have raised the MLA profile (now we have a public side) when we had such a civilized place going on.

Read Huxley's last novel (forget Brave New World) - "Island" - he imagines a mini-paradise of psychedelia and rational/emotional education, but at the end the tanks come rolling in, or is it the oil-prospectors, I can't remember?

I fucked up guys, through my unarmoured (yet sarcastic) approach, and I hope I didn't drag MLA into it. But mosbunall of them don't accept apologies over there.

I'll still go visit the smart and intelligent posts, but now I set off the 'Rottweillers with nothing else to do' you may still get a few more visits.  Hey ho. So it goes.

You may hate me now.

LOL

QuoteBogus wrote:
QuoteMeh, they see us as a cosy little group, living in a bubble. I've had PM exchanges with a few, and so on.

I explained we knew about the 'cosy' part, and several of our people had mentioned it in previous MLA forums (especially if you have no money for a subscription), but I figure that's why Admin opened it out.  In other words, their impression of us remains out-of-date. So perhaps some good may come of this anyway. It'd better, I have stayed up until 4 a.m. (local time) when I still have to go work in the morning.

Now they gave me a moustache job I almost feel welcome!

And I really did act like a dickhead, but boy I had fun - don't you just love getting pointlessly malicious and argumentative some times?  Perhaps I finally got tired of acting polite and responsible around here...

Or maybe I really 'am' a dickhead. I just find that a very limited form of abuse.

Like Steve Martin in Roxanne I want to go the dartboard, and then offer 20 better insults than 'big nose'.  But not right now, I gotta get some sleep.

G'night.

No, you just might become like Bogus Magus . . . the Cosmic Schmuck factor is supposed to help in these circumstances, but I'm sure he thinks the same applies to us.  The difference here is that he is lumping everyone on this board together, despite the fact that most of us wouldn't be able to agree on what to get at a restaurant, let alone agree on anything else.

He still smugly assumes he one-upped all of us, when he's really just a twat.

Yep.

He does make some (imo) valid points about the lack of optimism around here at the time... but that seems to have drastically colored his view on everything else. See, if he'd stuck it out like I did, he may have been greatly surprised. Yet, even among Discordians, we often still seem to gravitate to groups that don't threaten or challenge our favored world view too much.

Interesting, no?

Again, the lumping together.

I happen to be a ridiculously optimistic person . . . and I do actively seek out people who have views different from mine . . .

We are all separate people with separate agendas.  Lumping us together does everyone a disservice.

Yeah, I think you might find that mosbunall of us would consider ourselves to be optimistic.

I don't think our cynicism or gallows humor belie this.  I think what Bogus was objecting to was sumbunall of our sense of Realism/Realpolitik.

That is, the world might be going to shit, and humanity might be made up of mostly monkeys, but if we know that, things will turn out all right.

I think Bogus is a hypocritical jerk who edited his posts to destroy any meaningful criticisms that were done of them, made up a bullshit excuse about "non-linearity" for the MLA crowd, then proceeded to take part in exactly the sort of territorial pissing games he thinks he is above.

I would agree... except to modify " Bogus acted like a hypocritical jerk when..." ;-)

Also, I didn't intend for my statement to include everyone... nor any one persons particular optimistic or pessimistic view. I was referencing my opinion of the place when I first started posting here regularly. I didn't think I needed to use E-Prime here, but I can do that if it will keep people from thinking that I'm talking about them personally  :lulz:.

When I spend most of your time focused on 8-circuit grids, reality tunnels, Crowley and even the PD etc. the general feel I have is one of control, not total control, but some control. They're my circuits and I can change them. They're my ideas and I can modify them. It's my reality tunnel and I am free to order and disorder the concepts that make it up as I Will. Those models and maps tell me that I am in control, I have the Power of Will and I have the capability of being Free.

The BiP metaphor, as laid out here a year ago, made me feel as though there was no control, other than minor changes to perception (I can move a few bars around), but from Sperm to Worm, from Womb to Tomb, I'm trapped in Prison.

Coming from a RAW/Leary/Crowley perspective... thats a harsh and pessimistic trip.

Of course, if your coming from the other direction... maybe the RAW/Leary/Crowley stuff looks like fuzzy happy bunnies with rainbows shooting out of their asses.

On the other hand, a lot of chaos is built upon misperceptions and misunderstandings, so I try to use absolutist language as much as possible, to introduce disorder into a verbal system.

I don't really, but it sounds good and gives me an excuse to be lazy.

As someone who has never read any RAW whatsoever, I found it amusing that Bogus was spouting what appears to be ex post facto RAW dogma as if it were something we as Discordians should abide by. I don't think he quite has a handle on what Discordianism is, somehow. And the impression I get of RAW from what I've heard from other is that he wouldn't really be in favor of his words being plied as dogma.

It's sad but true... at least it seems that way to me.

The main reason I fled the regulars at Maybe Logic a year ago, is because the mourning of Bob was way to close to hero worship for my tastes... probably for Bob's as well.

RAW had some great ideas. I think that he made a lot of memes which espouse ideas that have value. However, he never (in any way that I ever saw) EVER encouraged people to suck them down and regurgitate them as Discordian Truth.

Yet, this was exactly the sort of crap that he had to deal with constantly. The opening of  Prometheus Rising has a great glimpse into his frustration with this. Scientific types calling him a new age spiritualist/quack and the New Agers calling him an atheistic materialist... disciples desperately trying to attach themselves to him and detractors damning him for his 'beliefs'...

The most "Damned, banned, excluded, condemned, forbidden, ostracized, ignored, suppressed, repressed, robbed, brutalized and defamed of all Damned Things is the individual human being" and Bob was an individual human... as were all of the people that became Bobites. :(

Quote from: St. Hemlock Dropwortyou know... i wasnt going to mention names but the principia forums are at the top of my list of places to NOT spend a lot of time at. its all too aggressive and there doesnt seem to be a well thought out reason as to why.

I will totally agree that this forum isn't for everybody.

the REASON this place is so aggressive, however, is because the users of that place prefer it that way. I've always kind of seen it as "adversity breeds strength". It forces you to do at least one of the following:

A) Be careful about what you say --- and be prepared to back up what you do say
B) not take flames, or words like "n00b" or "prison bitch" seriously. (I mean christ, it's only the internet)
C) leave

some people do all three!

but the product of this admittedly confrontational tone has been very positive.

The Black Iron Prison is just one of the numerous creative projects to come from this place. When it comes to creative output, there's something magical about an area where everybody can express themselves freely without worrying about hurting feelings or getting their feelings hurt. If I post a story or something and you guys hate it, you'll tell me why. If you love it, you'll tell me why. That's SO MUCH MORE HELPFUL than a lot of the other people who read my stuff and say little more than "That was good!"

I feel confident that when Leary developed the 8-Circuit model he did so with the definite intention of it being used to illustrate the second circuit.

It's funny that they don't realize that comparing their mindsets with our supposed "2nd Circuit" mindset, is itself, a demonstration of 2nd Circuit psychology.  They are defining their intellectual territory, and we sure as hell had better not think we can aspire to that, since all we are are shit-flingers.

I didn't say this whole forum and all its users was 2nd Circuit, and it was some other guy who acted all smug and suggested MLA was more 5th Circuit.

I agree that using the model to try to score points seems really stupid.

Myself, I just used it as shorthand at the time, to try to describe the 'feel' of the response I got the first time I came in here.

I shouldn't have used jargon, just said I got a good kicking and be done with it.

After a while lurking and wandering in here I came across far more interesting stuff, but your archive is so vast.

And as someone suggested at the time, if it wasn't my kind of place I should just go, no-one would miss me, and if I thought I might fit in, to stick around, lurk and read a bit before trying to join in.

I feel astounded that all this still exists over here, from two years ago.

The MLA forum lost all its past long ago. MLA Admin may have stashed it somewhere, but we can't get to it. It's just about dead in the water.

Anyway - I'm off to read more of yer forum.

What did 'Finnegan's Fist Axiom' tell us?  "The normal does not exist. The average does not exist. We know only a very large but probably finite phalanx of discrete space-time events encountered and endured."

A good, loyal member of the RAW tribe should have that tattooed on their fucking forehead.  Be better.

Sorry about that Ratatosk.

I really didn't think I had described all members of this forum in any way, Hoopla, and totally agree with yer tattoo suggestion.

I only remember describing the personal impression I got when I came for a visit, and should have shut my fucking mouth, and lurked a while, instead of diving in.

But hey - the follies of youth.

QuoteAnd before I left, someone did remind me they enjoyed their mosh pit, and the internet had plenty of other niches for the likes of me, so I cheerfully left. But, like I say, some good people belong to that space, and maybe they go for house style while there (sub-personalities, and all that).
[....]
I guess I remain more of a hippie than a punk, so spitting at each other, and body-checking, doesn't appeal as a pastime. But then again, I think of myself as 'anarchic' and yet several activist anarchists have sneered at my apparent passivity in the past.

Looks like you grokked that some of us like this game... So I got no problem with it.

Mosh Pit and Body Checking is a good way to describe this forum.

The thing that most people miss in both pits and forums, if honest, is that in the end someone reaches a hand out to help you back up.

Bogus Magus. That your career on PD has come to this will, I am sure, have come as a surprise to many, not least your erstwhile smug and, as it turns out, disastrously complacent self. However, to those with a more rounded experience of your methods and morality, both the beneficiaries and the victims of your self-righteous and self-appointed crusading, it will remain a source of bed-wetting astonishment that it has taken so long for the hive mind to bring themselves to bear upon your arrogant and devious person.

You are, in the well-chosen words of our resident hate-shitters in describing your ilk, an unreconstructed wanker. To that one might add that you have infinitely more to say for yourself than your knowledge or experience could possibly justify, and that I have seldom found myself passing judgement on someone so evidently lacking the benefits of a damn good kicking.

You have thrust upon us your ill-informed, half-baked, out-dated and, frankly, paranoid theories for a tiresome number of posts now, and the wonder of it is that anyone continued to listen long enough for you to persist with the behaviour that has ultimately led to your downfall. I would remind you, Bogus Magus, that paranoia is often merely the flipside of egotism: both deludedly imagine the world to revolve around oneself.

While your n00bish exploits have occasionally enjoyed vindication in the past, it should be evident to anyone remotely cognisant with the facts that your roles in certain notorious events have been grossly exaggerated by both posterity - which is often inexplicably kind to the self-aggrandising - and by your own indulgently biased accounts. No doubt you like to depict yourself as a thorn in the flesh of the establishment, but closer to the truth would be to say that you are merely an irritant, and that the subsequent rashes are far more the result of your unwanted presence than of any defect on the part of those you choose to infect.

In the case of someone so self-absorbed, it is perhaps plausible that certain developments may have escaped your notice; to wit, the inexorable evolution of this forums posts and the irrefutable testimony of the hive mind, which states, if you would take note, you are not welcome any more. Once upon a time, you found and to your credit exposed corruption and conspiracy among those of whom we expected better. Your problem, it strikes me, was that you did not know what to be about next. You have continued to seek out such nefariousness, but where you have not found it you have instead imagined it - and more insidiously, implied it. If I were you, I might wish to consider whether a man who finds corruption in every place he looks might perhaps be seeing the reflection of what lies within himself.

In the instance that has brought you before me, you arrogantly pitted yourself against an organisation far more august and enduring than the windmills at which you had tilted before; and though you were but a mosquito attacking an elephant, it cannot be ignored that this mosquito wished the elephant harm, and its bite may have done so had it not been swatted.

In short, Bogus Magus, there is no place for you here in the future. This is a new Discordia, a new forum, with new standards and a new morality. I must not allow it or its institutions - nascent and ancient alike - to be disparaged and prejudiced by the diseased mind of a wee shite like you. For this reason, I order that you be taken from this board, henceforth to a place of confinement, there to dwell in perpetual fear of being chibbed and humped by rabid schemies.

Off to zee concetration camp!

:mittens: Cain I read your post twice and I understand it now.

Bogus, if you are not enjoying yourself here - your doing it wrong. Are you trying too hard? While it may not be for everyone, where does this attitude come from, that gives you the ability to claim that we are lowly? You've burnt your bridges, but you can rebuild them if you aren't going to act like your all that. Or continue to pity us through a very powerful telescope. I don't really care.

I just want to understand what reasoning you are using.

I read the MaybeLogic site, and if THAT is the reasoning ... then I am just slightly concerned at how faint-hearted people can be.

Please do not post stuff that I will have to go remove... Feel free to go argue, fight etc.. just not the porn postings or anything I have to go delete.

And yes its slow as hell, its on old code which is proving nearly impossible to upgrade without blowing it all away. Its a rather painful topic.

I feel astounded that all this still exists over here, from two years ago.

Yes, it's amazing how we ignorant colonials (who cannot tolerate English diffidence) have managed to tie our own shoes, let alone keep a board going for 8 years.

Both Faust and me keep backups of the board. With the server located in the US, that gives us redundancy over three fucking continents. Yep, I'm pretty sure "all this" is here to stay for a loooong time :lulz:

We still have backups of all MLA forums from history... it's just completely incompatible with the code for the current site :(

And this is the root cause of your problems...like the users there perpetually moaning about Wilson's dead ass, the forum software is so slow and clunky that you'll never get anyone new to use it, but you can't bring yourself to scrap it and get something useful because of past glories.

That board is depressing.  It's a roadside museum, the kind that nobody ever goes to, just another faded-out billboard on the highway.

I'm coming to the conclusion RAW is kinda like Jesus: his fanclub can be annoying as fuck, and he'd probably not approve of the manner in which he is being revered.

Not thinking of MLA in particular to be honest, though some could no doubt make the argument, I just had a run-in with Shawn Darkwolf or whatever his name is on MW, droning on about how history isn't real because it is biased or something, and how RAW would approve.  Bleh.  I'm sure RAW had better things to do with his time than approve sloppy solipsists on internet forums.

Yeah, well I just asked him if he disbelieves in history, does he also disbelieve in the Holocaust, so he'll either have to admit to being a Holocaut denier, or admit his stance is full of shit.  Either way I win.

I just wanted to mention that.  Alot of people who are very vocal about reading RAW come across as smarmy pricks.  Like very vocal Christians.  I know they'd be fundies no matter what they latched onto, but it doesn't make it any less annoying.

Oh, Interesting!  I guess you have a point, Cain, because I am unsure about what you mean.

The only PD element I intentionally included was Eris tossing the "Holy Chao" which is mixed with the eight pointed "chaos magic" star.

This gives me an idea though! PD is intentionally Public Domain right? To encourage iteration maybe?  So I could make my own version of the book and no one would mind?  Or well I guess there's always someone who'll mind about any and/or everything,  but I'd still be legally allowed to publish it?

Oh, not much.  Just the way we are, the things we say...Bogus gave his account of PD, and the rest of your collection of shitheels are basing your little 2 minute hate on his word alone.

I mean, I'm all about hate, and there's plenty of things to hate us FOR, but at least hate on us for things we actually DO...one of which, incidentally, isn't taking the PD as the end-all be-all of how to think.  Bogus said that, by comparing us to some retards he knows that take Crowley's Book of Law ( :lulz: ) as gospel, and insisting that we are the same way.  Fuck him, and fuck you too.

And someone might let ninja-boy Minnar (or whatever the hell his name is) know what "dogmatism" means.

Just saying.

I can't see his image from this computer- I didn't even know he posted one - so I can't tell you.  I'll look into it from home, if another mod doesn't beat me to it.  If it's inappropriate, I will take the tags off, just as I did with yours.  If you want to show your artwork, fine.  We're all about that.  If it's NSFW, though, you should probably show a little consideration to LMNO and a few of the others who could face employment difficulties, and leave the image tags off, with a <---NSFW next to it.  Is this so difficult?  Or is your ego more important than his job?

And if you're in with the MLA crowd, then yes, fuck you (That goes for Rat, too, the fry-salting bastard).  I don't see you over there trying to straighten out Bogus' lies, do I?  No, and that makes you party to them, at least as far as I am concerned.

While waiting for your board's hopeless software to load, I'd like to point out that Minnar is more probably stupid.  People agreeing on something isn't "dogmatism".  "Dogmatism" is taking something as Holy Writ or universal truth.

He is an idiot, but an amusing one, especially how he just HAD to inject the weird Akida Kim-esque claim of being a martial arts instructor (which had WHAT to do with the conversation)?

Fucking hopeless.  Won't load.  Please ex-post this defense of yours.

I posted re: MLA on PD
http://tinyurl.com/y8lmtxg

So now here's re: PD on MLA.

"I probably post as much on PD as I do on MLA, (lately anyways) and I very much like both sets of characters. I see no necessary conflicts, except but for the fun of it."

Obviously different people experience the same things differently, and so for multiplicity's sake I'm happy to say that I have not experienced PD to be anything like that which has been described here.

I have found it to be an active, friendly place, where more people read and respond to my comix than anywhere else in the world. And if not everyone likes my comix, their feedback is still valuable!

Long story boring, I find PD to be a great resource on par w/ MLA, and I think there has been a misunderstanding on both sides.

Oh also, Ratatosk mentioned that what is preventing a true re-birth of the MLA forum is that to do so would cause us to lose our archives again. I say light a match.

Isn't this how a raccoon trap works? The raccoon reaches his paw in the trap to grab a shiny pebble, and his hand gets stuck because he can't fit his paw out of the trap while holding the shiny pebble. All he would have to do to free himself from the trap is to let the shiny pebble go...

Hi Minja!~ thanks for coming over and saying Hi. These inter-forum meeting of networks are interesting, no? I always find it amusing to bump into other Discordian sects who have different insights about this "Eris" contraption.

So to answer your question, hopefully without sounding like I'm dictating anything,

Anger is a great tool for Eristic Destruction. And it's part of the human experience, dontchaknow?

I don't think anybody will disagree that I'm one of the most laid back people on this forum. I usually do the zen thing and let the white water run under the bridge. But if that's your only mode, you run the risk of being content and complacent when some things need to change.

Anger is the fulcrum which transmogrifies dissatisfaction into action. Anger illuminates injustice and dissolves inertia.

The suggestion that anger is indicative of "missing the joke" implies that the right way to live is to be a bliss ninny. We can't just float away on a hot air balloon filled with laughter and good will. Yeah, the universe is hilarious in the right context. But if one curbs his anger every time it crops up, none of the bad shit in this world is ever going to be addressed. It takes a hot compress to bring a zit to the surface.

A lot of Discordians forget that Eris is a Goddess of STRIFE. Zaniness and not taking things seriously is a great way to not let the strife get under your skin. But like anger, that's just one tool in this giant toolbox called Discordia.

Hi Cramulus,

Thanks for the hello and the welcome. I still remember seeing you as a mellow one from my foray here a couple of years ago.

Now, I am one individual who gets what you're saying.  I know the fuel of anger. I also do not forget that the goddess we're "worshipping" here is no fluff-bunny.  And I will cop to being a bliss ninny at times, when I'm not busy causing trouble.

What I was trying (and failed) to address with that sentence was what I saw as crazy whacked-out anger directed at people who really didn't have it coming.  So when I talked about missing the joke and laughing, I wasn't trying to say "in order to be a discordian you have to laff all the time" or ANYTHING like that. I should have been clearer with my language, because what I really wanted to say was "Roger why are you so pissed off and shitting all over us when we should be friends?"

But WHATEVER!  Misunderstanding is a calling card of chaos, no?  You know, I like you guys. I really do.  And I'd rather not feel like we are on opposite sides when we're not.

IF I EVER SEE YOU POSTING HERE AGAIN, I'M GOING TO TRACK YOU DOWN, RAPE YOUR MOTHER, GET HER PREGNANT, THEN WRAP THE NEWBORN IN DUCT TAPE AND FUCK IT UNTIL IT RESEMBLES A GOOSE-LIVER PATE, WHICH I WILL THEN FORCE FEED TO HER UNTIL SHE CHOKES ON IT.  THEN I'LL FUCK HER AGAIN.

I GUARANTEE IT.

I should have been clearer with my language, because what I really wanted to say was "Roger why are you so pissed off and shitting all over us when we should be friends?"

that's fair :thumb:

to answer your question --- roger is a fuckin' rain god, that's why!  :lulz:

Roger, like many of the tumultuous forces present in the universe, shits where he pleases. That's part of his slack.

The problem is that people from the outside seem to think every single post here is made in dire earnestness.  Which is certainly not the case.

Just think how many people would really be worse than Hitler if this were the case.  :lulz:

Hiya Roger, and all you other scary folks! just kidding.  Thought I'd come over here and just ask youse guys... why is what I wrote so funny?  I don't want you pissing your pants.  It leaves stains, you know.

P.S. I know that I don't top your shit list anymore for "telling lies about you", but since somebody brought it to my attention last night, I wanted to share what I posted to Bogus the very first time he came in here and made you guys mad.  So as to say, hey, fuckers, I was on your side, so get off my shit!  :D

Day-um! Bogus, I forgot how well you stir shit up!

Seriously though... those guys threw you more chances than most forums... specially that LMNO character, who seems very nice and calm, for a forumite.

XOXO Ninja-boy

obviously, few posts here are made in seriousness and/or earnestness.

But it occurs to me I should stick with my gut feelings when it comes to this board.

And too funny... when rog lost his shit on the MLA I thought those exact words - fuck em if he can't take a joke.  Yeah, flip out and call me a dumb aikido boy.  How fucking funny for him to say after accusing "us" of not getting to know you guys.

Whatever. I am not taking any of this seriously, I'm certainly not butt-hurt or offended, but I am definitely not welcome or at home here.

Cheers all.

Did you honestly miss that you called me "nice and calm" to which I responded by going so over the top I wound up on the bottom again?

I mean, it was the perfect setup.

OK, OK, OK, I'm leaving shit out and being vague in my responses.

Yeah, yeah LMNO - I appreciated the irony of your post. But STFU about my mom.   :argh!: :lulz:

I also appreciate the fact that y'all are a bunch of funny, vicious mofos.

So to clarify - I was thinking at the time that I should just take my leave now, "on top" so to speak, because I'm up to my eyeballs in woo and I like it that way, and I think time I spend here would be an exercise in masochism.

Which of course should spawn a bunch of "so why the fuck are you posting here?" responses.

And the answer is cuz I like you. And I am also one of the eeevil MLAers and I think you have an inaccurate perception of us as a whole.  But I also know that I will get ripped a new one here, repeatedly, and I don't think I'm up for it.  Some of the time I will be up for it and have fun and the other times I will cry and curse and hate you all.  So I'm askin myself - am I up for it, or shall I just go back to lurking?

Anyway, carry on, nothing to see here. LOL

Honest response:

If you want to share ideas with a minimum of ad hominem, post your ideas in the "Think for Yourself, Schmuck" subforum.

We try to work out new ideas there, and if the theory is honest, we usually try to break it down rather than kick it.

Just saying.

You know, I wonder how come people just don't realize that being nice is the easiest way to get in anywhere. That's how I roll, it's how I've survived on the social food chain all my life, and look! People like me and DON'T RIP ME A NEW ASSHOLE.

Coincidence?

For over 1200 posts?

I find that highly unlikely. Maybe I should be a bitch for another 1200 posts and see how that works out for me?  :lulz:

but I like the stains. Gives my pance character.

Try washing them with bacon salt as the detergent.  That also confers character.
