Title: The Saga of Asobiden
Post by: Remington on March 28, 2013, 01:48:49 AM
1st Granite, 131 (Early Spring)

It was inevitable, I suppose. Myself and certain other acquaintances had finally been (informally) banished from the seaside farming fortress of Strangleweeds. I am completely innocent, of course, but it seems we are to take the blame for several misdeeds around the fortress recently. Most of these were solidly in the "wrong place, wrong time" category, but it was made very clear by certain high-placed nobles that I should volunteer for the expedition to found a new colony. Or else.

Six other dwarves accompany me, mostly other "inconvenient" individuals who were given the same choice I was.

Still, I suppose there is an upside to this. When we arrive at the designated location we will have full reign to build our own civilization, without the rampant idiocy of the dwarven nobles. From what I have heard, the location selected is lush with wildlife, with excellent soil and a commanding view of a freshwater lake. We have named the new fortress Asobien ("BoatPaddles" in the common tongue) after some discussion. We should arrive within the week.

It appears our misunderstandings with the Strangleweeds nobles has generated more bad feelings than we initially though. We arrived at our destination today, but instead of lush greenland we find ourselves on the edge of a sweltering desert!

The corpses of various wildlife lie strewn across the small grassy savannah before the desert, many of them mutilated beyond recognition. More disconcertingly, there are a few who seem mostly intact, apart from a large puncture wound in their sides. The faces of the latter are twisted in horrible grimaces of pain, and my companions seem to recognize the effect of desert scorpion venom. The bare landscape echos with the caws of the giant ravens that seem to thrive here.

Regardless, we are nearly out of supplies and we have no choice but to stop and make camp here. I have ordered the excavation of an entrance hall into the sandy ground here (as there is no suitable terrain for a proper mountain entrance) and the deconstruction of the supply wagon.

Good fortune! Upon digging below the sand, we immediately struck obsidian and hematite! The valuable nature and sharp edges of obsidian will be a great boon to our future economy, and the presence of iron-bearing ore means that Boatpaddles will able to defend itself with weapons of its own make.

I have ordered storage space and the military barrack to be dug out, and work is progressing smoothly. We have begun to move the supplies from the caravan underground, in order to get them away from the aggravating sun. There's been a freak rainshower, and the moisture threatens to dilute the stocks of dwarven rum and ale. The mere prospect of this frightens us more than the mutilated wildlife, as I'm sure you can understand.

The Good Reverend keeps trying to get me to try his cheese. "It's gooooood shit" he says. "Made with 169% CACTUS JUICE."

I suspect he's been distilling cactus extract in the tunnels below the entrance, but I have no way of proving it. Need to keep a closer eye on him.

12th Hematite, 131 (Early Summer)

Strange creatures continue to roam the lands around Asobiden. Nigel has identified them as "furries", with a glint in her eye that I quickly coming to fear.

Gogira seems eager to try his axe against them, but I urge caution. Our defenses are still in construction, and he is the only one of us with any kind of military experience. He can have his fun once we get a few marksdwarves to back him up.

The excavation of the workshop area is proceeding smoothly, with Cainad working to strike the earth, Eater of Clowns constructing the masonry shops, and Nigel lending her experience with interior design. She and Cainad nearly came to blows over an incident where she demanded that the already half-excavated cavern be moved "just a little to the left". She claims that the positioning of the cavern messed up the fortress's "feng shui".

Sounds like Elvish nonsense to me.

A dwarven couple and their child turned up on the doorstep yesterday. Armok only knows why they wanted to come here.

Now that some space has been cleared out, we bend our efforts to addressing the rather embarrassing lack of furniture around here.

Nigel works on creating some obsidian trinkets, so that we will have something to trade when the dwarven caravans arrive in the autumn.

Nigel continues to show economic foresight. I saw her just yesterday venturing aboveground to construct a depot for the trade caravans to stop at. Good forward thinking, I suppose.

21st Timber, 131 (Late Autumn)

The dwarven caravan from the Mountainhome arrived today. In the excitement, a kobold thief tried to sneak into the fortress, but was quickly discovered. As the commander of the militia, Gogira was sent to deal with him.

The skinny little bastard managed to run away, but as Gogira was in pursuit he ran into the SECOND thief head-on.

Screaming his war cry, the axedwarf charges at his foe...

...and promptly gets his ass handed to him.

As Gogira heroically passes out from a small scratch on the hand, the kobold makes a break for it. Unfortunately for him, the caravan had arrived by then. The guarddwarves take him aside and gently explain to him that stealing is wrong.

I have ordered any dwarves not busy with other tasks to begin carrying trade goods to the depot. Gogira has been issued a lollypop and a band-aid.

We saw a grand ol' brawl some time ago.  Our brave Militia Commander got 'is arse beaten by a kobold!  Narsty bugger.  Ought to show Gogira not to sleep on the job again, though, poor sod.

Been startin' ta er...feelins.  Ones I never 'ad before.  Unnatural ones, tellin' me ta come ta the surface.  Strong feelins, like I don't want ta say no.  But I 'ave a harder and harder time keepin' my head straight when they come.  Tellin' me ta join me brothers.  But me brothers're in Asobiden.

Right?

can't Armok-damned believe those elfhuggers sent me all the way out into bloody NOWHERE to dig holes for a bunch of lowlife cretins

I used to carve out edifices in the fucking cliffs, out on the mountainside! This subsurface, hovel-digging mine work is obscenely dull.

can't finish thoughts, too angry

Journal entry 2

Calmed down. Had some of what's left of the precious booze we brought. Nish knows I've dug out plenty of space for at least one of these layabouts to set up some farms and a brewery. We'll all be mad as gnomes before the year's out, otherwise.

Hematite. Thank fucking Armok, there may be hope for this place to be more than kobold bait. Some day.

Still can't bloody wait for this useless pit to accumulate enough supplies that I can pack for my escape back to the Mountainhomes. Nevertheless, they're not all bad dwarves in here. I had my doubts about Remington, and even more doubts about the assgoblin who put him in charge, but at least he has enough sense to come down in my favor when that schist-nibbler Nigel starts gabbing off at me about "fang-sway." I may not like it, but I damn well know how to dig out a proper near-surface cave.

After the excitement with the kobold thief, we were able to conduct trading normally. Our goods are not terribly valuable (our stonecrafters are fairly new at the trade) but it is enough to purchase some supplies.

Year-End Report

We may not have much on paper to show for our first year, but our basic services and industries are up and functioning.

Level 1: Entrance
Installing a bunch of stonefall traps here... not ideal, but it will have to do until we can get some metal trap components made.

Level 2: Future Military Barracks + Hospital
I've set up the farming on this level, primarily with plump helmet mushrooms. We are producing enough of them to both feed and booze everyone so we shouldn't run into any food concerns.

Level 3: Future Noble Office Space + temp stockpile
We haven't got any nobles yet, but what the worthless parasites do come along the'ye going to be wanting offices of their own. Best to plan ahead.

Level 4: Workshops
This is where the primary industry of the fortress is. Currently we have:
x3 Mason's workshops
x2 Craftdwarf workshops
x2 Jeweler's workshops
x1 Still
x1 Mechanic's shop
x1 Tanner's shop
x1 Carpenter's shop

Nigel seems to be monopolizing the craftdwarf's workshops completely. Pergamos is becoming very popular in the fortress as he is the only one with any kind of brewing experience. Lastly, the Good Reverend and Eater of Clowns are making good use of their masonry skills and making us some furniture. Cainad lists mechanical skills on his resume, but seems to be avoiding the backlog of mechanism work in favor of sulking down in the lower tunnels muttering about edifices. I'm a bit concerned about him.

Also, my humble yet well-appointed office is on this level. I've ordered the walls of the office smoothed and (if possible) engraved. Nothing but the best for the hard-working overseer, am I right?

Level 5: Dining Hall
The extremely spacious dining hall is quickly becoming to go-to spot in the fortress for dwarves on break or slacking off. The northern segment of the dining room has had some floor grates installed that drop down to the next level: I hope to get a lovely artificial waterfall flowing through here next year.

The butcher shops and fish cleaning stations are on this level, separated from the main dining room by an airlocked passage.

Another kobold thief slipped in today. I'm a bit concerned at the ineffectiveness of the traps at stopping these intruders: this thief managed to make it halfway down the central staircase before someone found him.

Gogira clearly viewed this as being Round Two versus the kobold menace, and rushed forth to redeem himself in the eyes of his fellow dwarves.

I haven't been able to butcher anything yet.  But I have been keeping everyone's mouths full of wine, which is making things much more tolerable.   The furries even look kind of cute with enough wine in you.  With all the iron ore all over i expect the fortress will have steel weapons and armor before too long.  Gogira could use a steel axe, I bet she'd kill more than half the kobolds that way.

Thanks! Level 6 is zoned as dwarf condos (smoothed 1x4 room for each dwarf, includes door, chest, bed, and cabinet) and Level 7 is noblespace. Level 8 will be tombs/catacombs. Here's the residential blueprint I usually use:

I find that keeping everything orientated around a single central staircase greatly reduces walk distance from any one point to another, as ascending or descending a stair only counts as one tile of movement. It also allows zoning of each Z-level to specific purposes (dining, crafts, military, residential) which helps keep track of everything once you hit 150+ dwarves.

As a bonus, placing hatch covers on the central staircase on each level allows you to lock down access to the fortress on a level-by-level basis, even to building-destroyers (they cannot destroy the hatch cover above or below them, therefore they cannot path to that level).

Just wait until I finish designing the entrance: the design I work with allows a "siege mode" that turns the 20-tile trapfree walk from surface to fortress into a 200+ tile trap filled death corridor with the flip of a switch.

Cainad reports breaking through into an immense subterranean cavern early today. Reports of mossy walls, immense, twenty-foot high mushrooms, and bizarre wildlife are starting to come in.

One of our hunters managed to slip into the cavern and shoot up a strange horse-like creature that was grazing on one of the gigantic mushrooms. Cainad rushed up to my office and barged in within knocking. Eyebrow arched, I looked him over as he struggled to catch his breath.

"What is it? First you nearly take my door off its hinges, and then you don't even have anything to report?"

Cainad glared at me spitefully. "Don't give me any 'o your shit," he managed to get out as he tried to catch his wind. "Let's see your royal paper-pushing self sprint up one hundred twenty flight of stair, and see how well ye do with it."

I opened my mouth to respond, but never got the chance as Cainad reached into his belt pouch and tossed a small fragment of rock onto my desk. The light flickered oddly off its surface as it rolled, and I reached out to pick it up.

And promptly recoiled back, fingers bleeding from cuts almost down to the bone. "Aye," said Cainad, "It'll do that."

I grabbed a small pair of jewelers tongs from under my desk and examined the rock under the torchlight. It was intensely, unnaturally blue, and upon closer inspection I could see multitudes of razor-thin strands embedded throughout the rock. It weighed very little, but knocking it upon the edge of the desk cracked the edge of the desk instead of harming the rock.

"No," I said as I looked back at Cainad, "It can't be".

"It is."

Gogira's Day Off

Gogira looked around at the bustling Dining room, full of her fellow dwarves running to and fro. Apparently, no-one had time to attend the get together she had organized. Damn them.

She was getting sick of this place. The work piled up endlessly, she was somehow expected to keep the entire fortress secure while still running odd jobs, and NOBODY in the entire freaking hole in the ground had any desire to take a break and have a little fun. Remington had spent the entire season locked in that wretched office of this, scribbling endlessly, Nigel worked just as long hours on the stonecrafting benches, and Pergamos kept asking everyone if they had any pets that they didn't want anymore. While carrying a large butcher's knife.

Gogira starting pacing up and down the tables, frustration building. The piercing chirps of the bizarre man-sized grasshoppers that were now roaming the surface dug further at her concentration, until finally it snapped. If no-one else was going to party with her, she would do it herself. And Gogira was a dwarf that knew how to blow off some steam.

Tossing her axe in the stockpile as he walked back through the fortress, Gogira grabbed a keg of rum and sat down on the edge of one of the tables. It was good to be a dwarf.

A cave! Finally, some open space to work with. It's not the same as carving the open cliff faces back home, but it'll do. I might be able to stay sane a little longer.

ADAMANTINE.

can't hardly write

must maintain composure; Terrible Things happen to dwarves that go mad for the blue bones of Armok

So little is known in the Mountainhomes about how to handle an adamantine deposit. Rare is the Dwarfhold that lasts long enough to tell its history once it's found the stuff.

Hopefully, we can contain ourselves for long enough to carefully excavate the rock around the deposit. We shouldn't dig into it until we know exactly what we're digging in to.

Big update will be posted tonight, with Bees, Butchery, and the Blood of Armok.

Also, as an interesting sidenote: that adamantine vein we found was at level 82. Magma level is at -20. That means that there's ONE HUNDRED LEVELS of shiny adamantine in that spire alone.

We's gonna be rich, if we don't die horrible, fiery deaths.

3rd Slate, 132 (Mid-Spring)

The advent of spring has brought with it a flurry of new activity. Pergamos has eagerly taken on the job of resolving our animal surplus:

He's basically the dwarven SPCA. As a species, we generally don't hold with the "adoption of poor unfortunate creatures" thing.

I've had Cainad start digging out a very specific arrangement of tunnels near the front entrance and filling them with cage traps: my plans for this space will be revealed soon.

The cage traps proved their worth almost immediately, as no sooner had they been installed when FOUR goblin snatchers tried to mosey in the front door.

We now have four caged goblin prisoners, securely restrained within wooden cages. More of Nigel's fine handiwork... it seems like she is making half the things in the fortress by now. I have yet to decide the prisoners' fate, but for now they have been placed in an exhibition hall for the amusement of the general public.

Lastly, Eater of Clown's somewhat unique delusions seem to have taken full flight: he recently made off with some of Nigel's spare obsidian boxes and was last seen on the surface chasing after insects. He came back underground just before sunset, covered from head to toe in stings but smiling.

The darker part of the spring season reared it's ugly head today. Every year they return, like a bad case of herpes:

Fucking elves. No good tree-fondling eco-terrorists, every one. Gogira and Roger both want to just ambush them and have done with it, but I reluctantly give the order to allow them to approach. We're supposed to be building a civilization here, and unfortunately that sometimes means sacrificing personal desires for the sake of diplomacy.

We load the depot up with Nigel's handiwork and managed to get a decent deal for all the trinkets and crafts. Mainly wood and cloth, but we did acquire a tamed, caged wolf and cougar. Sadly they can't be trained for war like dogs can, but they may still be of some use.

9th Felsite, 132 (Late Spring)

Lots of migrants arrived today, nearly doubling our population. We're up to 42 dwarves now: quite an achievement for a few exiles from the Mountainhomes.

I've assigned most of the arrivals to begin work on a surface construction: we need some outer defenses to hold back wild animals and goblin incursions. A great big wall is just the thing.

Surprisingly, most of the migrants have actual, useful skills. All the migrants are competent with at least one kind of weapon, and for some reason an armorsmith is mixed in with the lot as well! Usually it's only the rejects that get sent to the colonies (fish cleaners, cheese makers, and the like). What is happening back at the Mountainhomes that such skilled individuals are leaving?

I knew it was too good to be true. As soon as that armorsmith had set his pack down he began to ramble and lurch around the fortress aimlessly. He seemed to be muttering something under his breath, something about needing iron.

Cainad and TGRR still haven't fired up the magma forges yet, but it seemed like a shame to lose a promising armorsmith to this sudden insanity. I ordered the construction of a make-shift forge, smelter, and charcoal furnace, and we managed to supply the poor dwarf with the iron he needed. I hope this pays off.

Upon finishing his masterpiece, Bembul calmed down and the strange mood seemed to lift off of him. The result was a masterfully wrought iron breastplate, unadorned but crafted with exceedingly fine worksdwarfship. Somewhat annoyingly, Bembul seems to remember nothing of what possessed him to create such an artifact, nor does he now display the unsurpassed skills that he displayed earlier. He reports feeling odd shortly after arriving in Asobiden, and then blacking out until after he had finished Thobshigos.

I can only conclude that Bembul was possessed, and forced to create this item by forces unknown. I am trying not to overanalyze the event, but it seems to me that such a supernatural occurrence such a short time after the discovery of the Truemetal is no coincidence at all. I have locked the breastplate (or "Thobshigos", as Bembul calls it) in a locked room until I can decide that these portents mean.

15th Felsite, 132 (Late Spring)

Remington paced along the plateau overlooking the underground lake, watching the still waters reflect his torchlight back at him in flickering wave of light. The adamantine vein was just visible at the far shore of the lake, the distinctive blue hue of the ore contrasting sharply with the granite all around it. It looked... out of place. Wrong.

The stocky expedition leader thought about recent events as he walked the edge of the underground lake, weighing the possession of Bembul and the unexplained yet self-evident issues far away at the Mountainhomes in his head. Was it wise to continue delving further into the earth? Going ever deeper? Or was Bembul's episode a warning to the dwarves of Asobiden against the hubris so common to their race?

The dwarf picked up a small stone near the mineshaft and hurled it in the general direction of the distant adamantine. All the clerical work had been sapping his muscle tone, though: the stone hit the surface of the lake less than halfway across the lake. The ripples from the splash quickly spread out across the perfectly smooth surface of the lake.

Remington turned and left. Unseen by him, the ripples from his stone continued across the lake, until, gently, they broke upon the crystalline shore of the adamantine vein.

Its silence broken, the surface of the lake began to boil. Twisting and frothing in the wake of unknown forces, the water exploded upwards in a frightening show of force. A horrible roar echoed throughout the entire cavern, a roar from neither man nor dwarf nor elf.

Personally I like elves.  I know it's not considered properly Dwarfy to do so, but they bring really interesting animals in trade and if we can get a breeding population of one sort or another I'll have more to butcher than poultry and puppies.  Not that poultry and puppies aren't delicious mind you.  A nice puppy roast, with a barrel of ale, nothing better.

Thankfully, we managed to contain the creature before it murdered any of our citizens. We have walled off all access in or out of the cavern, blocking out both the Forgotten Beat and and our hopes of mining the exposed adamantine.

It is still lurking there, out of sight beneath the deep waters. Waiting for us to slip up and provide it with a path into Asobiden.

Meanwhile, I have issues of a more administrative concern to be dealing with. Yet more migrants have arrived, boosting our population up to 55 citizens. Over half of them are idling around in the gathering area right now due to lack of work, and the bedrooms STILL haven't been dug out or furnished. Forget forgotten beasts, it seems more likely nowadays that I'll just get my skull split open by an angry immigrant with a pick.

For the moment I've ordered everyone currently slacking off to start smoothing out the dining room hall and working on the surface walls/towers. It's not strictly necessary, but I need to keep them busy.

Annoyingly, despite so many dwarves claiming no work to do, there is an entire crop of mushrooms going stale in the farms just waiting to be plucked. No one seems to be inclined to go and pick them.

20th Hematite, 132 (Early Summer)

The magma forges have FINALLY been dug out. Cainad and TGRR dug through the floor of the forge level and broken through to a vast ocean of magma. Multiple veins of the precious adamantine were spotted protruding from the bottom of the hellish ocean.

One of the veins came up through the area designated for ore storage, and the miners had already dug through half of it when I received word. I ran down to see for myself and immediately ordered the miners to stop digging. For some reason, just looking at the half-excavated vein made my skin crawl. Cainad had been spreading horror stories about the Truemetal throughout the fortress, and I wasn't entirely sure that those stories were false. Better to be cautious and leave the adamantine alone for now. We have no idea how to process it, anyway.

Now that we have smelters and forges running, we need metal ore to work with. I've ordered a large vein of tetrahedrite (copper and silver ore) to be dug out. The hauling and smelting of this will provide lots of work for our layabout workforce.

Also, the bedroom level is finally dug out. Now we just need to make 50 doors, beds, cabinets, and chests. Somedays I hate my job.

Date Unknown, Journal Entry X

The Truemetal... the blue bones of Armok... I have struck it from the earth with my pick, touched it with my very own fingers.

This was many days ago now, and work has proceeded as one might expect. And yet, things are clearly different. I know the others feel it, Remington does his level best to hide it, but he too has touched the adamantine, felt its truth.

I spent many an hour trying to clear my thoughts, working with our fortress' own Holy Man, The Good Reverend Roger. If anyone among us would know what it means to the Dwarven soul, he would, but out of all of us he seems the least perturbed by the adamantine. We cleared our way to the magma sea, great pillars of adamantine standing unblemished by the heat.

I underestimated this place when we first came here. Our industry shall grow mighty with these tools at our disposal. Despite our earlier disagreements, I have no doubt that Nigel will do great work with the stuff.

And yet...

The blue metal. Even now I hear in my mind the uncanny ringing of my pick chipping away at it, a sound like no other ore I have ever heard. A sound that seems to chime through the whole earth one moment, and inside one's skull the next. The chime of Dwarven fate.

Our clock is ticking.

The furries on the surface continually pester us. We have trapped several of them in cages, but the others of their flock gather around them and prevent our dwarves from carrying them away.

I've requested that Gogira go and kill them, but every time he gets close they simply fly away and return when he is gone. It's past time we trained some marksdwarves.

Our canine population has exploded recently, giving us plenty of candidates for war dog training. I am hoping that they will offset the lack of any real militia until we can get iron and steel production going.

I've ordered the EXTREMELY CAREFUL excavation of the stone around the adamantine vein on the lower levels, so that we can determine the width and depth of the vein. The value of the lustrous metal in unquestioned, and Asobiden needs wealth in order to fuel our economy and attract new migrants. Cainad returned from surveying the adamantine earlier tonight, uncharacteristically silent. He refused to acknowledge anyone as he strode through the fortress, not even stopping for his lover Nigel's famous "Mushroom Burger" (raw mushroom on a mushroom bun, garnished with mushrooms). He immediately claimed one of the craftsdwarves workshops, slamming the doors behind him and allowing no-one in. Despite herself, I can see that Nigel is worried. After five long days, Cainad has finally emerged from his sanctuary. He clutches a stone figurine in his hand at all times now, and frequently seeks the wisdom of the Good Reverend in private. Whatever happened down in the depths of the magma forges and the adamantine, it seems to have spurred some kind of religious epiphany in the stoic miner.

He refuses to discuss what led him to such a state, and seems extremely reluctant to return to the depths of the earth. I ask him what he saw down there in the adamantine, and he merely shakes his head, speaking only a single word.

Friends, Hedwarves, Shedwarves, Alldwarves,

The adamantine is not your friend.  It is a temptation to delve deeper into a world we cannot rely upon.  Heed instead the call of the surface, of the petals and the pollen.  Heed the call of your Queen!

The beauty and serenity of the Hive is Elven fantasy.  It is the industriousness to which we dwarves are most akin.  It is comaraderie where we shall find salvation, but where is it found?

In Her wisdom.  In Her glory.  In Her defense.

NO I DON'T SMOKE CAVE WEED, IT'S ILLEGAL AND A BAD INFLUENCE ON TEEN DWARVES.

I just haven't been drinking as much lately, that's all

(I've made up in my own mind that handling raw adamantine ore or inhaling dust containing it is toxic, a little like mercury, but only mind-affecting)

I'm concerned about your drinking. I feel like it's becoming a problem. It isn't normal to drink as little as you do, and I think it's starting to affect our relationship.

25th Timber, 132 (Late Autumn)

Truly, today is a sad day for all of Asobiden. For one of our own has fallen, murdered by the filthy goblin savages that lurk to the north.

Early in the morning our workers on the surface reported a small force of goblin soldiers approaching Asobiden from the Northwest. It appears as though our prosperous fortress has become too large and wealthy to continue ignoring. I immediately ordered a lockdown of the fortress and the activation of our entrance traps to deal with the scum. Gogira, however, insisted on attacking the goblins and defeating them in close combat by strength of arms. Her recent victories over the kobold thieves and Furries had left her confident, and eager to engage the foe.

We exchanged words, and she left. The account of the ensuing battle between her and the goblin menace came to me second-hand through the dwarven caraven guards camped outside our entrance.

Gogira charged the unwashed beasts with a mighty dwarven battlecry, hefting her bronze battleaxe to the skies. She tore into the goblin soldiers with unparalled ferocity, fighting with axe, fist, and even teeth. The enemy faltered under her relentless attack, losing morale and body parts alike.

Alas, Gogira's dwarven warrior mentality left her unaware of the depths to which goblins could stoop to gain the upper hand. While she was dealing with the unlucky goblin swordsman, his comrade snuck up behind her and began stabbing mercilessly with his pike.

Gogira quickly wilted under the goblins' combined savagery, succumbing to her numerous wounds.

The caravan guards cleaned up the remainder of the goblins, but Gogira remained fallen. The goblin scum could not even manage to die valiantly: one of the swordsman broke ranks and fled upon seeing the rest of his squad cut down.

I have commissioned a fine tomb to be made for our fallen hero, so that she can rest in peace beneath the feet of her brethren. I have also ordered the completion of the outer walls and production of full steel armour and weapons: this morning's attacks will not be the last. On this day the goblin nation has made itself an eternal enemy in the dwarves of Asobiden.

5th Opal, 132 (Mid-Winter)

Gogira has been laid to rest in the catacombs beneath the fortress.

All efforts since her death have been bent towards the security of the fortress: work on the outer walls has progressed and a moat has been dug and filled. The blacksmiths are busy creating massive axe blades and serrated discs for use in traps, and a Pit'O'Doom has been constructed beneath the entrance hallway.

All else has been quiet. Hopefully this winter will pass smoothly.

Each "Founder" of Asobiden will get a large private tomb customized for their (eventual) use. Gogira's has been set up with an iron sarcophagus, plus iron armor/weapon racks and an iron statue. Please let me know what you would like to have in your tomb, along with what kind of material you'd like it to be made of and I'll get everything set up.

I know what I'm having in my tomb...

Alcohol doesn`t exist as a free- flowing liquid, but I could stock it up with lots of whiskey barrels. For full liquid submersion your options would be water or magma. Blood or whisky-tainted water could be done.

Shit like this is why Dwarf Fortress needs more exposure to people who don't actually have the time and patience to learn its mutant freakazoid abomination of a control scheme. It's supposed to be able to model all kinds of things, but it doesn't have a way to store non-liquids or non-foods in barrels.

Of course a dwarf should be allowed to be buried in a booze barrel, of all things. You have to be buried in something, because all your dwarf friends will get upset if they see a friend go without a proper burial, but why should it have to be a sarcophagus? Someone needs to get the programmer on this right now.

25th Opal, 132 (Mid-Winter)

In sharp contrast to her lover Cainad, Nigel made straight for the subterranean workshops, directly opposite the exposed adamantine vein. She grabbed a handful of adamantine ore and raw iron, and worked nonstop for three days.

The masterfully crafted figurine depicts Gogira and the Kobold thief at the moment of Gogira's triumph. We all express our grief in different ways, and it is understandable the Nigel would want to commemorate her friend's passing. With the completion of the artifact, Nigel has returned to her dormitory and gone to sleep. She seems to be back to normal.

30th Opal, 132 (Mid-Winter)

It is horrendously cold outside, cold enough to make me rethink our decision to build so close to the surface. The ground is covered in huge snowdrifts, and I am beginning to envy the metalsmiths for the warmth of their forges.

Also, we finally struck the gold that the initial surveyors had reported. I've ordered the magma forges to start smelting gold bars as quickly as they can. Gold may not be as valuable as adamantine, but as least the damn stuff isn't cursed.

Journal Entry X

I have chosen to tear out and stow away my past several entries. The stress of the work of mining must have gotten to me. Lack of fresh air will do that to a dwarf, heh heh

heh
hehehehe

The discovery of gold has done wonders for my mental state. It's oddly soothing, compared to what I've been doing lately.

Dear Nigel was taken by a curious fit of reclusive creativity. The result was an uncanny commemoration of our fortress' mightiest protector, Gogira. I can respect the desire to be solemn about such a craft, but the way Nigel would handle and coo softly at the... crafting material... was unsettling.

Gods, have I been drinking enough lately? Better safe than sorry.

Nigel has made the most amazing statue I have ever seen. It is queen gogira, striking down a kobold, but on it is a picture of it, and if you look really close there is a smaller picture in that picture, and so on, and so forth.  I don't know how she did it.

Mining and masonry, mostly. You're a Legendary +5 Miner, as you and Cainad basically dug out the entire fortress by yourselves, but you haven't been attacked/gone insane/fallen into magma/anything out of the ordinary.

Presumably you are also dispensing HolyTM advice to help Cainad and Nigel get through the whole adamantine psychosis thing.
