Title: They killes Rock and Roll
Post by: Adios on May 20, 2011, 03:46:02 PM
I can prove it.

There are two Idol finalists, a 16 year old girl and a 17 year old boy. Both are country music singers.

Before you ask, no I do not vote, but sometimes I like to watch because I like music and I grew up with it on teevee.

The two left can actually sing and I was pleasantly surprised.

JW said last night that this proves what he has been saying for a while now, America is on a country kick.

He then went back to killing zombies in Left 4 Dead...

What real choice is there left in music? Terri just got Gagas album free in Farmville and she wants to return it for a full refund. What sucks is I am being forced to hear it.

I fully expected Roger to cloud up and rain all over me for this thread.  :lulz:

I'm very MEH on the music that is coming out today.  I tend to listen to a little of everything, but I do find I'm on the country station more these days than in the past.  Just because even the metal stations throw in bullshit rap stuff on the sly and that makes me want to run down puppies.

I know what you mean. I will button surf and then pop in a cd that has music on it I want to hear. It's only going to get worse as country makes its way closer to pop.

I don't know that I'd really consider Lady GaGa Rock and Roll anyway.  Seems more like dance music to me.

But I really blame the Internet for the state of Rock and Roll.  In my mind, Rock was driven by the success of the LP format.  With the Internet, the LP format is in critical condition and likely to die in the next decade or two.  Also, I think the Internet has lead to something of an over-saturation of new music.  It's more difficult, I think, for a new band to really make some noise in the scene and get up the momentum to become an established and known band.

But then again, I'm probably just biased by my BIP which was created as I grew up in the 80s and early 90s.

GAH!  It's to be expected...  and a new genre will be defined and they will try to tell everyone who played a fucking note before them how they were just doing it wrong....

And you have to wonder if Johnny Cash and Janis Joplin are somewhere doing shots and laughing... or maybe crying.

QuotetUnE-yArDs (the StudlyCaps are intentional) is the music project of New England native Merrill Garbus. When performing live, Garbus creates drum loops on the spot, and layers these with ukulele, voice, and electric bass (played by Nate Brenner). The "w h o k i l l" tour will add a saxophone section.

To be honest, it's the conglomerate labels and radio stations that you have to watch out for.  They have the marketing power, but if you really look at it, there's about a dozen, maybe twice that, of pop/rock acts being pushed on terrestrial radio and TV.  That's an insanely small percentage of available music.

I know there is good music out there, the trouble is finding it. Music producers see something make a hit and immediately they want to copy the style, and this pisses me off. I should have said mainstream music is so generic.

Originality today is kicked to the curb by the bean counters.

Rock and Roll is dead.
Rap is dead.(yes even if Wu tang is forever)
Country is dead.
Techno is dead.
Metal is dead(Screamo? Seriously?)

Long live dubstep.

Remember when T-Pain style autotune was new and exciting?
That lasted about 5 minutes before literally EVERYONE was doing it.

What pisses me off was when people who could ACTUALLY SING started doing it.

How can you possibly hate it?  It has the whole package.

Infidelity
Domestic violence
Ruined lives
Both characters wind up drinking themselves to death after years of bitterness and regret.

Okay, it needs a train. But other than that, it's fucking PERFECT, and both singers (Alyson Kraus, Brad Paisley) have excellent voices.

She has the perfect contralto voice.  As long as she isn't doing the songwriting, you're gold.

Also, there's a song out now called "Big Gay Redneck Wedding", though it may be local to AZ.

It's all a matter of perspective.

Back in the 90s, people were going...Rock n roll is dead...and instead we have to listen to this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sM_9As_2VAg shit!
1) That was an abomination unto the Lord, your GOD of Music, Apollo.

2) I keep reading the title of this thread as "They killed Rick Roll".

That is all.

HOW COULD YOU NOT HAVE SEEN THAT COMING??????

:lulz: :lulz:

I am enjoying it.

AND SPREADING IT ON FB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What do you call the genre of metal where the lead guitarist just slams on bar chords while the bassist slaps his overly distorted instrument while the singer makes some noise that I suspect could be singing?

What real choice is there left in music? Terri just got Gagas album free in Farmville and she wants to return it for a full refund. What sucks is I am being forced to hear it.

She PLAYS it?  :emo: Can't you talk her into a game of drunken street frisbee or something?

Country music is doing fine, only for some reason, they don't call it "country" anymore, they call it "americana". Bad pop with a narrow, fiercely pro-americanTM focus is called "country".

Rock, punk, etc. haven't gone away, they just don't fit with the, erm, programming.

Can anyone explain to me what is so fucking "new" and "great" about Lady GaGa? The few of her songs I've actually listened to(completely against my will) sound like Madonna rip offs.  The teenagers I know are gushing about how hip/now this Gaga thing is and I'm going "uh huh, Madonna did this shit 20+ years ago".

American Idol is banned in my home ever since those fuckers foisted that Carrie Underwood bitch off on country radio.  I always carry my I Pod with me in the car just so I don't have to hear the currrent pop-country princesses  attempting to sing on the radio.  Where's my Willie, Waylon, Strait, Cash, Merle, Loretta, Conway music?  I don't want to hear this shit that sounds like 80's pop knock offs on country radio.  Real country singer/songwriters are few and far between nowadays.  Country music is as over processed and fake as the rest of the shit out there now.

I really like Adele's music.  Her album is one of the few that I was willing to buy the whole thing.

George Strait....what can I say?  He's King George.

I completely do not understand peoples' fascination with this Adele person.

Unless things have gotten so bad that being mildly talented is reason enough to put someone on a pedestal.

There are a few Christian-themed bands that I've really dug.  King's X and Galactic Cowboys both put out some really interesting music and didn't get too preachy.  And then there was the flash-in-a-pan band Mutha's Day Out.  Anybody remember them?  Good band that did the heavy-rock rap thing before it became really popular.

Things are that bad.

I listened to her album, 21.  There were maybe two stand-out tracks.  The rest was mediocre filler that would play perfectly in the background to any office elevator system.

Yeah. She's like a Lulu knockoff.

Oh, FUCK YES. That Mutha's Day Out album is still one of my all-time favorites. You're literally the only person I've ever known who heard of it who didn't hear of it through me. Never realized they were Christian, though.

Also really dug Galactic Cowboys. Space In Your Face was an awesome album.

The Christian angle was pretty subtle in their music, it wasn't until after they broke up that most of them ended up joining/starting other bands that were more overtly Christian.

Yeah, I knew Mikal Moore was the singer for some Christian band. It just always seemed that most of the religious references in their songs were more along the lines of being disillusioned, but probably just how my own filters interpreted the ambiguity. Still, Locked and Get A Clue make me wanna get up and kick things to this very day.

King's X...been a long time.
Yeah, they were ok. Not epic, but ok.

They were a rather quirky band.  They hit the scene at the height of the hair-metal movement, but they didn't really have the hair-metal band look or sound.  They were definitely more of a thinking-person's band.

I really like Andrew York, both solo and with the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet. You don't generally see people listening to it though.

Also, my brother gave me a Them Crooked Vultures CD several years ago and I thought it was pretty darn good.

Man, I tried SO hard to get into them because I generally love everything Josh Homme has a hand in, but I just couldn't do it.

That Andrew York cat, though, he's got some serious chops.

I dig Them Crooked Vultures, but mostly just as no-gimmick, easily listenable rock.  None of the songs have a hook and none of the tracks on the album are a hook.

The new Foo Fighters album is heavy for them, and this can probably be chalked up to the fact that Dave Grohl is apparently hanging out with fucking Lemmy.

Heavy, but lacking in standout tracks. Seems to me the last few albums have been a decent mix of standout tracks to throwaway tracks, but this one has few of either. It's pretty much the poster child of rock mediocrity.

Though I do really like "Arlandria".

Also, Grohl's been hanging out with Lemmy for awhile. At least since they collaborated on the Probot album.

Sounds about right.  It was a disappointing follow up to Echoes, Silence, Patience, & Grace, which was probably second only to The Color and Shape in terms entire album quality.

Heh. It's not often that somebody posts that specific an assessment of something as broad as a well-established band's discography and I find literally nothing to disagree with.
