Title: Thoughts on this? Also, ATTN: Faust and Cain
Post by: Nephew Twiddleton on March 27, 2014, 09:06:37 PM
So, one of my cousins just posted this one on her facebook. I'm not sure what to make of it. Some of the phrasing in the article is setting off my "suspect content" radar. Paging Faust and Cain because I'm not sure how trustworthy the Irish Examiner is. My news consumption when I am over there is limited to RTE and occasional trips to the Internet cafe. I am also immediately suspect of a news piece in Irish media about a vaccine to guard against a sexually transmitted virus. I've not heard about this otherwise.

Cheers. And I'll respond with that.

Also, more on sanevax.org, the inspiration for that article.

Good to know, but point is made. My cousin liked the link and I followed up with:

Quote from: TwidVaccinate your daughters. Vaccines save lives and livelihoods. I'd have loved it if my grandmother got a polio vaccine.

Grandmother in question is her grandmother's sister. There is a reason my father, a Catholic Irishman born in the early 1950s, is an only child.

Fuck it, I'll quote that too.

I wouldn't know anything about the cervical cancer vaccine though I know we have our share of vaccination causes autism crowd.

Irish media reporting is pretty poor, the examiner would be one of the better of a poor bunch, but the quality of what makes it into the newspaper doesn't seems drastically better then what they report on on the website.

Fair enough.

Just for my own personal filters (I am ultimately a Bostonian), when I am over there, who should I trust? And more importantly, who should I distrust?

RTE won't give you the full story on anything that handles corruption or implicates anyone in the inner circle but will give you a summary of what's going on
Breakingnews.ie covers a lot of the gang land stories the others wont touch but reads like a gossip site.
The examiner tends to have more detail than rte but still doesn't expose anyone who might be someone's cousin.
The Irish times is a bit rubbish.

I wouldn't trust any of them, but if you read two or more of them you see the inconsistencies in the stories or the details that the others leave out.

Good general rule - not just Ireland
