I would spend every minute wondering if any of my friends or family were still there. I would wonder where they died. I would wonder where the pieces they came back without were. Those 'cool' tunnels harbored soldiers that killed Americans. They hid supplies and weapons in them. They were booby trapped.
Do you know how they checked those tunnels out in the 'police action'? The smallest guy was held by his feet and lowered in head first with a .45 pistol. Fun times. Maybe I better just leave this thread.

The rudimentary booby traps they built were horrible, but effective, and they didn't have much choice. I, for one, was taking notes in case any poor bastard is ever duped into invading my home one day, and into believing I am his enemy.

I know it is understandably a topic of much grief to many Americans, that war is a horrible little stain on our history. Honestly, I wanted to see what reactions this thread would get from everyone here, because real, honest, bare human emotions are beautiful, Hawk. I certainly don't deserve an apology from you. I should instead thank you for expressing yourself in my thread, or maybe I should be the one apologising for bringing it up. I can't even imagine what it's like to lose friends or relatives in a war, so it's pretty unfair and horrible for me to force the topic on those that have.

Traffic was getting pretty heavy a lot leading up to tet. Vietnam has 84 million people and 10 million scooters. There seem to be pretty much no road rules, but no one really goes above about 40kmph, except on highways. Saw a few people come off their bikes, everyone stops, picks them up and helps out.


The streets everywhere were amazingly decorated for the new year.

The only thing that irritates me about this (I can't say I give a shit about a single parachuting rat, or even Banksy, though he's done some cool shit) is that they paint a flat colour over "artworks" to "clean up" the dirty streets.

News flash, arseholes! A paint job doesn't stop the rats from scampering around! Graffiti is useful because it lets you know what kind of neighbourhood you're in. It is really pathetic when there is a concrete wall painted grey to cover old graffiti but covered again in nasty tags anyway.

It's on, June extended long weekend 10th-14th in northern NSW.

I think you have to set up some kind of awesome camp and get approved before you can get tickets? A friend of mine is gonna set up some kind of little stage for some music performance and film showing, but IMO there needs to be a Discordian presence.

Then, a Big Bang occurred, out of which God was born (emanationism). The universe could not yet be formed and to do so, God created yin and yang. There are 36 levels of heaven and 72 planets harboring intelligent life, with number one being the closest to heaven and 72 nearest to Hell. Earth is number 68. It is said that even the lowest citizen on planet 67 would not trade place with a king on 68 and so forth.

ouch, yeah. I was having breakfast the other day and a guy wheeled his son past in a barrow. Kid was lying there with a head about twice the size of mine, though he looked like he was about twelve. Could've been much older, I guess. Certainly wouldn't assume deformity that serious is limited to the head.

Vietnam, oddly, is one of the places I'd actually like to go see.

Nothing odd, this place is stunning.

Sucks about the food poisoning. Vietnamese food rocks when they're not trying to kill you.

I didn't get it too bad. Only lasted one day at it's worst, and after three days I'm pretty much all better. I was vomiting and crapping at the same time for a few hours though..
And yes, the food is totally awesome. We spent one night on a junk boat up north. Place called Halong Bay. On our own private boat for about 20 hours, with about 6 crew to our family of 8 + a baby and a local tour guide. We were fed 4 meals in that time, averaging 9 courses each. No shit.
