Title: Political Memes/Cartoons you Disagree With
Post by: Cramulus on March 29, 2016, 05:36:10 PM
I don't know about you guys, but I'm probably living in an information bubble. My facebook and tumblr feed are filled with progressive memes which make a silly caricature out of the conservatives and libertarians.

The other day, a libertarian friend* popped the bubble by posting a riff on the "Jesus is a socialist" meme...

*this guy is a small-gov libertarian who is employed by the TSA... wrap your head around that one

It made me curious to see some conservative/libertarian image-memes or political cartoons which are caricatures of great left-wing stuff I agree with.

What can you find?

I have at least one Libertarian, one Conservative, and one wanna-be Redneck as FB friends.  I see memes I disagree with all the time.  I'll repost a few below.

That communism memebomb the US dropped back in the 50's caused a lot of brain damage. We're still breathing in the fallout. It also left an unsecured port in the thinking mechanism. I've seen everyone from men in the pub to politicians using it to lead an audience by the nose.

Somewhat unrelated, but I just don't understand this at all.

From what I know, if I was a young black guy in the US, I would be highly reluctant to wear my pants in a way that makes running away a huge ballache. You literally never know when an armed police officer might try and kill your or your friends. Standing around doesn't ensure you don't get shot, surrendering is not guarantee either. Shooting back results in massive escalation, so that really just leaves "Fucking Run" as your only practical option.

The pragmatism of it, or the cultural signaling?

As a white guy, I naturally checked Snopes as to its significance.

http://www.snopes.com/risque/homosex/sagging.asp
QuoteSagging pants became the behind-the-bars thing thanks to ill-fitting prison-issue garb: some of those incarcerated were provided with clothing a few sizes too large. That oversizing, coupled with the lack of belts in the big house, led to a great number of jailbirds whose pants were falling off their arses. (Belts are not permitted in most correctional facilities because all too often the lifeless bodies of their inmate owners have been found hanging from them.)

That's not sourced, so I can't speak to its validity.

As far as I can tell, they do it just because it pisses people off. The trend is on the decline, though. The new thing seems to be wearing multiple caps stacked on top of each other.

Another theory: They're using "cultural appropriation" to their advantage to see what kind of stupid shit they can get white people to do.

Both, I guess. That was my first resort as well and I regarded it as a relatively large heap of nonsense founded with racism. Howard's second theory does strike me as quite possible though. Certainly more plausible than the above.

While looking into this, I did find something interesting:

QuoteFreleng's cartoon, Show Biz Bugs (1957), with Daffy Duck vying with Bugs Bunny for theatre audience appreciation, was arguably a template for the enormously successful format to The Bugs Bunny Show that premiered on television in the autumn of 1960. Further, Freleng directed the cartoons with the erudite and ever so polite Goofy Gophers encountering the relentless wheels of human industry, them being I Gopher You (1954) and Lumber Jerks (1955), and he also directed three cartoons (sponsored by the right-wing Alfred P. Sloan Foundation) extolling the virtues of free-market capitalism, said cartoons being By Word of Mouse (1954), Heir-Conditioned (1955), and Yankee Dood It (1956), all three of which involved Sylvester.

Oh yeah.  It's quite a common theme, especially among libertarians, who conflate nationalism, statism, the welfare state, socialism, laws against diddling children etc as all, somehow, being Nazism.  Which is a form of socialism.

Bernie Sanders also isn't a socialist, but shhhhh.

Maybe it's a generational backlash that's been, like most of the rest of the memes, ineptly executed? Like they see Spongebob and Fry used in memes and they want to show these damned kids what a real cartoon was, back in their day.

Or they're the logical conclusion of Calvin peeing on Ford logos on the back of 90's Chevy trucks.

If you would rather I hadn't, let me know, and I will trash it. Just wanted a quick example of what something like that might look like.

Most people would prefer to believe in fantastical conspiracy theories involving aliens, Nazi zombies, secret societies stretching back to the dawn of time and occult powers gaining sinister control over our lives.  Also reptilians, Muslims, JOOS etc.

Unfortunately for them, most conspiracies involve power, money and embarrassment.  Why did the CIA attempt to kill Castro so many times?  Power and money.  Why did no-one come forward about Jimmy Savile, despite common knowledge of his crimes? Embarrassment and power.  Why did Bush redact certain key parts of the 9-11 Commission's findings, specifically to do with Saudi Arabia?  Embarrassment and money and power.

Also, real conspiracies are inevitably depressing.  The spectre of alien invaders attacking us from inside the hollow earth is far more exciting than the truth that the government sometimes pays its intelligence agencies to infiltrate terrorist organizations and then allow them to continue killing because it suits certain status quo political objectives.  Especially when you look at the list of people who have died by talking about alien invaders (practically none) versus all the judges and top law enforcement officials, many with personal bodyguards, who died while investigating actual conspiracies.

That said, for cartoon quotes, there are a lot more, uh, "punchy" quotes to use than mine.  I tend to be more expansive in how I deal with things, not so much for the one-liners.

THAT'S the shtick! Cartoon memes are supposed to be simplistic because they express dumbed-down concepts for people who seem to think thinking too much is bad for you, or something.

Apparently wanting transwomen to be able to use the same bathrooms as other women is an open door to letting perverted men claim to be transwomen, come in and rape them in the bathroom.

Why banning it - thus allowing perverted men to claim to be transmen and enter women's toilets and rape them - is any different is, as yet, unclear.

America does spend more on welfare, surprisingly.

However, this spending mostly comes in the form of tax cuts for middle class families which is, uh, not so helpful for the neediest in society (I'm going to assume these figures also ignore corporate welfare on both sides of the Atlantic, but it's possible they do not).  Kinda like how America spends more on healthcare than most European states.

It's none of the explicit content.  Look at the top left corner.  Americans for Limited Government.

Trump has argued in favour of censoring the internet, restricting free speech rights and effectively outlawing/spying on an entire religion.  Apparently that is limited government.

It's the old trope that "they're both the same" and there's no difference who you vote for.  One candidate is clearly a better choice, even if it's not the perfect choice.

I'm not saying they're both equally unappealing, I'm just saying I don't like either of them. I intend to vote for Hillary, but only to keep the republicans out of office. If there was no republican candidate though I'd either stay home or vote for the Green party or something (though I don't totally like them either, thanks to their luddite opinions about GMOs).

That's every white kid who refuses to ID themselves. This reminds me of something I need to put into the OHIO WTFUCKERY Thread.

Also, if you're white in Ohio, most of the time the cops just take your drugs and give you a warning. And if you do get charged, even an idiot can talk themselves out of being taken into jail.
My roommate had felonious drug charges. They let him go and put out a warrant for his arrest because of some stupid shit he said. He was then arrested for his crimes several months later after being pulled over.

This shitnozzle is running for Scot DeJarlais's seat in congress. Scott DesJarlais is the infected rectal polyp currently representing ME in Congress. DeJarlais is known to have pressured his mistress to get an abortion

https://www.facebook.com/GrantforTN/videos/1744279739147390/

This is what came out about him shortly before the election in which he WON.

(From Wikipedia)
QuoteLate in the 2012 election campaign, more events from DesJarlais's personal life became public, making the race against Stewart "one of the ugliest Tennessee congressional races in decades".[20] In October 2012 the Huffington Post obtained a transcript of a recorded September 2000 phone conversation in which DesJarlais pressured a mistress to get an abortion.[21][22] DesJarlais repeatedly denied that he himself had taped the conversation. In October he wrote to supporters on Facebook, "The media wrongly reported that I recorded the conversation myself. I was recorded unknowingly and without my consent."[23] Nine days before the general election a second woman came forward to state that she began dating DesJarlais while she was his patient. She alleged that the two smoked marijuana together and that he prescribed pain medications for her while at his house.[24][25]

Two weeks after DesJarlais won the 2012 election, the Chattanooga Times Free Press obtained a full transcript of DesJarlais's 2001 divorce proceedings.[26] The transcript revealed that DesJarlais had admitted under oath to at least six sexual relationships with people he came in contact with while he was chief of staff at Grandview Medical Center in Jasper, Tennessee. Among them were three co-workers, two patients and a drug representative.[27] The transcript also revealed that he and his former wife had had two abortions.[28][29][27] The transcript also revealed that DesJarlais had admitted under oath that he and his former wife had recorded the phone conversation with the mistress.[23] "One of the biggest mistakes I made was I commented to the press before I had the opportunity to go back and read a transcript that was 13, 14 years old," he said in an interview with the Knoxville News Sentinel. "It was never my intention to mislead anyone, and had I read this, I don't think the inaccuracies that occurred would have taken place."[23]

Three weeks after he won the election, DesJarlais announced on a conservative talk radio show that "God has 'forgiven me' and asked 'fellow Christians' and constituents 'to consider doing the same'."[30]

Grant Starret promises to be even worse.

Literally every single thing that Hillary is accused of there is factually incorrect.

Emails - were found to have some incorrectly marked "classified", the lowest form of "secret" information, including such well kept secrets as the date of a former of head of state's funeral.  Also done by previous SecStates like Colin Powell.
Benghazi - SecState is not responsible for individua embassy security, the military is.
No evidence of primary corruption - if anything, while hacked DNC emails reveal a low personal opinion of Sanders and supporters, there is evidence within them that they were going out of their way to try and avoid the perception of corruption with regards to voting.

It's slightly infuriating.

Especially when Clinton was responsible for things like denying asylum to Hondurans fleeing the coup.

It actually kind of freaks me out that the anti-Hillary left doesn't focus on things like this, but instead simply regurgitates right wing propaganda whole.

I think at least half the problem is most of them are under 25, and not at all engaged in politics outside of this election.

Yeah, I'd have to agree with you on that. It explains a lot of the self-centered myopia.

Who's got a properly snarky rebuttal on this?

Quote from: MLKI have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can't agree with your methods of direct action;" who paternalistically feels he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by the myth of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a "more convenient season."

If you look up criticisms of MLK, you will find that they are identical in every substantive way to criticisms of Black Lives Matter. It's not the right time, it's not the right place, alienating the good white people, how is making people late for work supposed to help, disruptive, you can't just demand change, etc. etc.

"It would be well if every American Negro compared his position and opportunity with that of his race in other countries. He would find that in none does the Negro have the advantages the United States gives him. As justified as may be many of the demands Negroes make, they are not the only matter of importance in the world."

This shares so much with typical shitty right-wing memes. Three different kinds of font, blurry as fuck for some reason, and stupidly misinformed. I don't know what this means about progressive politics, but whoever made this should be ashamed.

They will never be, because they will always be able to insist that they just don't see it.
