Title: PD Field Trip Proposal ---- A M S T E R D A M
Post by: Cramulus on September 28, 2011, 07:59:05 PM
(http://www.metrolic.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/amsterdam_14.jpg)

I want to put a feeler out there to see if anybody is interested in a field trip.

Destination:
A M S T E R D A M

When?
First Quarter 2012. Like maybe March. (tickets are relatively cheap then.)

That would be epic, but would depend on my employment situation, then.

I would totally love to meet up with you spags overseas...my only problem is, March is a tough month...April during spring break would be better for me.  I think I could convince Himself we need a Spring vacation to Yurp...

Pending employment situation (which hopefully will at least be as good as it is now if not better) I would definitely be interested, and I should be available pretty much whenever. Amsterdam isn't too far away!

Definitely not looking for a firm commitment at this point, just a show of interest. And any notes like "Not March, but April would work!"

March 2012, a round trip ticket from the Northeastern US to Amsterdam is going to run between $550 and $650.

If you start saving now, that's $30 per week.  :p

Interested, but probably not able to pull it off.

If anybody from far away makes it to Amsterdam, I'll make a point of being there, of course.

I will also take you to Utrecht, if possible (it's close, prettier, less touristic and I know it better)

Oh man, I'd love to make another trip to England. Last time was before I got assimilated into PD.communism.

If I don't make it, I recommend the city of York for walking about like a tourist, if you can make it. When you are looking for good accommodations in London, St. Margaret's Hotel (http://www.stmargaretshotel.co.uk/stmlocation.htm) is the place I stayed, and it was great.

Of course, anything that the local PDers recommend takes priority.

Squidday!  Woman, I need to make a trip to see the family down there.  And maybe then I could meet Zalgo Lt. Squidday face to face!  I have been prepared by this by my living in Tucson, which apparently makes things less brain-warpy than if you live in other places.

QuoteThe Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis (ASCA) invites proposals for papers and artistic contributions around the topic "Extremely Close and Incredibly Slow" for its annual international workshop and conference.

:lulz:

I can't make it, but if your school or work chips in for conference funding / professional development, the deadline for your 300 word proposal and bio is in 3 days.  Conference is March 28th.

Cool idea, cram.

If you book in advance and go with Easyjet, you can get tickets for as low as £20, and be there within an hour and a half.

I'll have enough frequent flyer miles for that trip by then, but I've already decided I'm saving my miles for a free flight to Brisbane, where our chief engineer & his wife have a house that sits empty most of the year and that I can stay in for free while I'm there.

So, Aussie spags, keep in mind that sometime in the next year or so I'll be calling for one of these meetups in upsidedownland.

Also, we should do one of these in STT someday, if anyone's got the stones for that.

There's also less chance of rabid scotsmen eating the train halfway there.

See it's $1600 or so from Brisbane, QLD. 24 hour flight either way. That's actually not taking into account that brisbane itself is a 2 hr flight away from where I am.

Dangerous tropical country?  Well, I'm sold.

You'd have a field day down there.

You might be the only person I can think of who would accidentally wander into the Bovoni or Pearson Gardens projects and make me feel sorry for the denizens of the projects. :lulz:

Bring Richter along as well, and the term "white devil" will gain a whole new set of connotations.

Congrats.  I expect, this being an academic conference, they do not pay for expenses?  Still, you will no doubt find plenty of free, nasty coffee.

Yeah, I'll be paying my own way, and I need to actually... write the paper. Still, should be a pretty awesome experience!

In most cases that would be an improvement over some of the death-by-powerpoint talks I've had to sit through at these things.

Hmmm... Forgot about this.

If my trip to UK/Ireland happens to fall in the same week, I will plan accordingly and make it out to Amsterdam as well.

I'll include a day in Scotland for my UK trip either way to catch Payne and Pent.

But Payne's no longer in Scotland though, IIRC?

I'm really excited about the idea of you spags coming to me instead of me having to come to you!

I have polled most of my friends. Their reaction is along the lines of "that sounds like it would be fun." then I ask "So, are you in?" and there's a lonnnnnng pause.

I dunno, it's really hard for people to commit to something that' still 5-6 months away. But the longer we wait, the more expensive plane tickets get. So I'm unsure how to proceed at the moment.

1} Set a date, allowing the quitters to quit now and force the people who want to come to make real plans.
2} Always accept arguments against a specific date, countering with a new one without outlawing the previous one.
3} Make a list of who rejects what dates and ignore anyone who rejects 4 or more dates.
4} Do all this with a nice word in every communique.
5} Amsterdam with Regret, 000, Cram, (insert other names here)!!!

Just home from Maastricht now, saw 000 on Thursday. I really want to make it over for this meet.
If you set a date I will probably complain about it and suggest one that suits work a bit better, but count me in.

I will be going over for the conference. This is likely to be all of my holiday budget for the foreseeable future, and I suspect I'll spend most of the time in workshops/networking with those people... though, I could probably meet up in the evening if people are around at the same time. Not likely to be able to take part in a 'field trip' as such though.

Was looking for this thread. Remembered it had "AMSTERDAM" in the title. Went ctrl-F ing through the last couple of Apple Talk pages.

Good thing you put those spaces in A M S T E R D A M, Cram! ;-)

"shut up trip, just fix the search already"

oh yeah.

I'm trying to get Eve to take some time off from work so she can go. Apparently this is kind of difficult at her job. But as soon as she knows if/when she can come, we'll have our date.

Unless I abruptly get a high-paying job with many days off, I won't be able to make it this year.

Somewhat on the fence. I do intend to visit ireland again sometime in april (i have two non-metal gigs around st. Patricks day.)  if it coincides roughly with my visit to ireland i am more than willing to meet up since i was going to try and visit faust pix payne and badbeast anyway.
