Title: Mistborn
Post by: Q. G. Pennyworth on September 13, 2013, 08:51:08 PM
So, our GURPS campaign has finally been declared dead (farewell, cyperpunk househunting), which means it's time to start up a new one. We settled on Mistborn, a system that has a lot of up-front party building - a problem we've had in several campaigns with this particular group. The eldest kidlet will be joining us, for her first grown-up game.

We decided that we would be living in one of the smaller outlying districts of The Empire and be working to free our district from its rule. When asked what our primary tactic would be the answer was unanimous: terrorism.

Have you seen the recent Order of the Stick strips? That should give you some solid ideas. Like it doesn't write itself. Can't wait to see how the path to freedom goes!

My friend will be GMing, he runs an indie gaming company. The only time he has run a game that I was unhappy with was when we played Amber, and I was still with my ex.

I'm sure Amber is the right game for a certain type of group. I have no idea what that group might be, because I've never seen it go well, but I have to assume somebody is enjoying that thing.

Our party consists of:

Falstor (kidlet): poacher, teenage girl, rebel
Wrayn Venture (myself): the money, mistborn (zinc)
(friend 1): shapeshifter, sweetheart
(friend 2): incompetent, mistborn (brass, steel)
(friend 3): boisterous, huge, guy who knows a guy

Our GM sets up the game by giving us a map of our little city and giving us a rundown of how things have gone from "pretty fucking oppressive" to "intolerable" over the last couple months. The head obligitor (the inspectors for the empire that call in the muscle if anything's out of line) is a total douchenozzle and he's making the whole city miserable. Plus, one of the steel inquisitors is already on the way to the city, and that's only going to cause more shit.

On the way to the safe house, one of our party (the loud guy) finds a girl swimming across the lake. He takes her with him, and she explains that the slums on the other side of the lake have been razed. It's decided that she can stay with Falstor's family for the time being. Meanwhile, we have other business to attend to. We decide our best tactic for our continued survival at this moment is to discredit the obligitor to reduce the imperial oversight of the city, and to accomplish this we need to make it look like he's slept with a skaa (filthy lower class) woman.

Set up: I work on starting rumors that he has a skaa mistress. They don't spread like wildfire, but there are at least mutterings. Meanwhile, our shapeshifter spends time observing the target so that she can impersonate him later. Falstor is planted as a serving girl in his retinue. We locate an abandoned house and a wagon.

Kidnapping: The wagon is set up behind the window on the noble's latrine in the pit (mine), with friends 1, 2, & 3 hidden inside. Falstor sneaks a heavy laxative in the obligitor's food, and I use magic to incite a riot among the miners (not terribly hard under the circumstances). The obligator rushes to deal with the situation and makes it for an admirable length of time before booking it for the latrine. There, friend 3 grabs him and pulls him into the wagon while friend 2 uses magic to keep him calm. Friend 1 assumes the obligitor's form and goes back to work.

The Smear: The shapeshifter, disguised as our target, puts on some half-assed "I'm trying to disguise myself!" clothes and sneaks in the most obvious fashion possible down to a low-class whorehouse. There, she hires a nice girl to come upstairs with her and play poker and chit-chat. For her own safety, the girl is given a handsome sum and told to get the fuck outta dodge after this is over, since the penalty for her would be death. By the time they're done in the whorehouse, there's a small crowd gathered outside to see what happened. As for the real obligitor, we douse him in alcohol and dump him in a public square a few hours later, wearing the same clothes the shapeshifter had on earlier. During his brief stay with us, we harass him enough to instill some pretty serious paranoia, and it makes him look like an even bigger jackass.

The Outcome: the obligator is run out of town. He tries to tell everyone he was kidnapped, and blames it on the house that owns the pit (Hasting), but everyone can see how patently ridiculous that would be. The hooker gets away, and none of our people are even suspected of anything. Success!

At this point, I put up two fingers and go "who's gonna do it with me?" The loud one volunteers.

How would you grade it as far as "adult content"? The kidlet's only 9, so we still screen things.

It's a full blown crapsack world. Murder, beheadings, implied rape (Lord's right, or whatever they called it), brothels, beatings. None of it is particularly over the top or graphic, but they're there.

I don't know your 9 year old, of course, but that sounds pretty young.

Oh, yeah, this thing!

So, we've been VERY NAUGHTY PEOPLE.

We jailbroke Friend 2 (let's just call him Murderface from here on out, because that's about who he is) Murcerface's metalurgist friend, blamed it on House Renault's shitty security and one guy in particular being terrible at his job. Archer + magical riot incitement = VICTORY. The metalurgist is pretty nutballs on account of mercury and all, but we've got him safely away and he tells us about some wacky new metal thing he's been working on. Whatever,

The inquisitor shows up and we mostly try to lay low, successfully keeping House Venture looking awesome. Ladrian Renault, the head of the household, is sentenced to be executed. Fuck that noise, he sounds useful! I spend the time conspicuously being at a party and not being part of any jailbreaking while the rest of the team gets their jailbreak on. Unfortunately, another crew also mounted a rescue attempt, so chaos ensues. Falstor gets the shit kicked out of her, but they get the guy. We then decide shit is too hot in town and decide to leave.

During our travels, we develop the symbol, costume, and rhetoric for our resistance movement. The goal is to make it look like we are merely one cell of a terrorist organization with deep roots everywhere in the empire. The costumes are maroon, well, burqua's probably the best way to describe it. Friend 1 and I make sure to only interact with Ladrian in costume, so he can't identify us later. He explains he's got his own group of people who want to overthrow the emperor. We are still deeply suspicious, of course.

We get to a town far away from the capital and decide we're going to full on act of terror all over the place, to draw the Inquisitor away from the capital and also because we said terrorism, after all. Hire a bunch of goons to start a riot, block all the exits out of the noble part of the city, and light burning barricades at their gates. FUCK YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU! and leave town.

It took the Inquisitor about half a day to show up and ruin everyone's day. By the time we returned to the capital he was already back.

Next plan? Stage a heist at House Hastings, steal some very expensive jewels and a less expensive platinum bust, plant the jewels at House Venture, get someone from House Cett caught trying to fence the bust, making it clear to investigators that House Cett was to blame for the entire ordeal, and has probably been putting the frame on the other houses for all this shit going down.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Post by: Q. G. Pennyworth on July 18, 2014, 08:24:07 PM
Nobody's reading this, I don't care.

We successfully stole the jewels from Hastings and plant them in House Venture. We even succeeded at planting evidence to prove that House Cett was behind the whole debacle. The Inquisitor, however, did not succeed at giving two shits about who was actually to blame. Despite my arguing for returning the jewels to Hastings, Venture held on to them until Redthorn scheduled a meeting with the leadership. As a bookkeeper, I wasn't exactly "high up" in the ranks, but important enough to be at the meeting. There Redthorn murdered our head of household and appointed me for who fucking knows what reason.

After learning about the Empire condoned army of terrible monsters to our south, we explained to Redthorn that he could join us in our fight against the Empire's troops or die. He chose dying. Then I had to explain to the other heads of household that we were at war with the Final Empire, and yes this is happening and no there are no backsies. We disappeared the head of the northern garrison when he made it clear he would not cooperate with us, and put his second in command, Vanir Elariel, in charge of the military. He came with us to fight the koloss, and we chased off the Steel Inquisitor who had been commanding them. When we got home, we declared ourselves an independent nation, and started building a new way of life.

Naturally, the Final Empire was pissed. They sent down an army of 50,000 to lay siege to Edross. It was unpleasant. Eventually, we were able to create an army of our own monsters, and we staged a fake surrender to lure out the Steel Inquisitor Reimfang who led the army. After beheading him, it was relatively easy to send the rest of the army away. In the farming community to the northeast, Faron, 20,000 troops remained and surrendered to us. We named our country Direland, because this setting is full of terrible names. Wrayn got engaged, quietly, to the leader of the army.

No, of course it wasn't going to be that easy.

A month later we get word that the Lord Ruler, God Emperor of the Final Empire, is coming down with three Steel Inquisitors to wreck our shit. Murderface and our other magical beatstick were not convinced that they could kill him, so it was decided that we should try to evacuate the important people. Vanir, the captured army, and some random other people would head to the dominance to our east, while Ladrian and a huge number of civilians would head further south after all the koloss had been removed. The PCs would head north to Terris, where they would try to recruit an army of feruchemists to aid us. Wrayn insisted on staying behind with her people. The PCs let her think that was the plan, then kidnapped her on the road and sent her off to Terris.

The party is now split, with the smashy smashy group wrecking things all around the Empire, complete with a Wrayn lookalike. Team talky talky is up north, attempting to convince a bunch of very reticent magic users to stick their necks out for people who live on the other side of the world.

QuoteThe night is long, my legs are weak
But in the Empire I'll not sleep
I beg this road on which I stand
Take me home to Direland.

I've seen the peaks of Terris loom
I've stood beneath the Ashmounts' gloom
I've walked the streets of Luthadel
And in them, found a special hell.
I've sailed across the black South Sea
In Fadrex merchants winked at me
I've dipped my feet in North Seran
But long to be where I began.

I miss the port at old Nidall
The forests east of Caelfall
I miss the artists' pencil scrawls
Even the nobles' fancy balls
I miss the men, so brave and true
The women, strong and faithful too
I miss the kandra, young and free
And all the things my home could be.

For in my home they do not kill
Noble or skaa for his free will
The Pit is not a place to die
Nor will the judges bat an eye
At doling out swift punishment
To those who beat the low peasant
And all are taught to write and read
To understand the laws we heed.

The ash falls soft, the trees grow tall
At night we hear the owls call
Food is grown in rooms of glass
Fresh water fills every glass
The beer is strong, the wine is sweet
And should there not be food to eat
The rich will share theirs with the poor
Or find the judges at their door.

O, I would brave the dangerous mists
And fight the koloss with my fists
Roaming bandits I don't fear
No thing is worse than me out here
The mistwraiths won't cause me delay
No army can stand in my way
I'd walk the Empire end to end
To find myself back home again.

The night is long, my legs are weak
But in the Empire I'll not sleep
I beg this road in which I stand
Take me home to Direland.

QuoteBury me in Direland
Where laws are just and men are free
Take me home to Direland
The place my heart still longs to be

Bury me in Shauran
Where grapes grow fat upon the vine
Take me home to Shauran
The place our people held the line

Bury me in old Nidall
Where fishing boats ride blackened seas
Take me home to old Nidall
The place that soothed our hungry pleas

Bury me in fair Faron
Where fields grow tall and air is sweet
Take me home to fair Faron
The place Reimfang could not defeat

Bury me in bright Edross
Where craftsmen work and children read
Take me home to bright Edross
The place where all the slaves were freed

Bury me in Direland
Where skaa and noble live in peace
Take me home to Direland
The only place I'll lie at peace

QuoteIt is called the Final Empire for good reason: there will never be another empire after it. No, what we build upon the ruins of this diseased tyranny will be unlike anything yet seen or imagined. Where the natural dignity of all men is honored. Where wisdom is derived not from the blind directives of a madman who has set himself above all others, but from the discourse of wise men and women throughout the world, informed by the experiences of those who live in the world, not away from it. Where reason is cherished and blind obedience expected only of dogs.

I will not tell you lies about our future. I will not promise you a land where the masters are the slaves and Skaa inherit the earth. These are promises handed down by crass manipulators and doomed idealists. What we offer you is not idealism, but a real possibility at a future. A future where your lives are not forfeit on a whim. Where no man must live in squalor while another drowns in riches. I do not offer you a future where every man is a noble, but one where the word Skaa is no longer synonymous with beasts of burden. This is a future you can have, that you can give to your children and grandchildren. A life of simple dignity, of honest work and freedom from abuse.

We are the new order. We are everywhere. Expect us.

in-game affirmation for Wrayn

QuoteThere is nothing to be afraid of.

We will never be imprisoned
We are the ones who will be shot on sight
They will invent new execution tools if they have to.

We will never be captured
We are not the ones they want in a cell
They will string us up in the square unannounced.

We will never be tortured
We are the ones interrogators fear
They will scream to drown out our hideous laughter.

We will never be converted
We are the ones who turn men to our will
They will cut out our tongues before we can speak.

We will never be imprisoned
We are the ones who die upright
They will be afraid long after we are gone.

More in-game propaganda

QuoteI am a Free Woman

My enemy is coming
On horses black as soot
Their axes gleam in sunlight
The miles race underfoot
Together with his servants
All fierce and riding hard
King of Men, God Emperor,
The Infinity Shard

And when he comes to kill me
I'll neither beg nor weep
For I am a free woman
And I'll die on my feet.

I will not sing his praises
Nor obey his command
I'll never recognize his claim
To rule my native land
I'll treat kandra as people
And tell the skaa they're free
I'll burn down every building
Of his Steel Ministry

My every breath is treason
I face certain defeat
But I am a free woman
And I'll die on my feet

I will not lock my heart down tight
For fear that it may break
I care about the land I'm from
And know the risks I take
I will find the strength to fight
And be a woman still
I won't shut up to save myself
And I'll love who I will

No matter how it pains me
My heart and soul I'll keep
I'll live a free woman
And I'll die on my feet.

We were once noble and skaa
Kandra and terrisman
We once fought and schemed against
Those we now call friend
Our Ruler sought to keep us down
By driving us apart
But we have learned to live at peace
We've earned our fresh start

And when he comes to strike us down
We will not bend our knee
Because we are free people
And we'll die on our feet.

The poor harvest this year. Your daughter being stolen away in the night. Your sons being killed. The hours of backbreaking labor all day and watered down broth for supper. The taste of ash on your lips. The drudgery of knowing that this is your life, and this is all it will ever be.

Then you get angry because someone hit you with a serving tray, and you take it out on each other. It's pathetic. It's why he's winning.

All of your problems are because the Lord Ruler decided a millennia ago to punish your ancestors for having the balls to resist him. All of this is his fault. Not your neighbors, not the guy who hit you with the tray, not even the nobles who serve his will all too eagerly. Your misery is the fault of the Lord Ruler, and as long as we're all too busy fighting each other, he'll never stop making things worse.

He turns us against one another, so no one has the strength to fight him.

Quote
For a thousand years, the sun's light has been choked out by clouds of ash that decimate our crops and foul the air. For a thousand years the mists have haunted our nights. For a thousand years we have suffered under the reign of a man who claims to be the shard of Infinity, while great houses bicker and fight, and the common skaa die in their thousands. He says he rules wisely, but this is a terrible place.

If his powers are so great, why does he not abolish the ashfalls that weaken our food supply and spoil all that is beautiful? Our keeps and hovels are plastered with black soot, it runs through our streets and alleys, it seeps into our water and blackens the sea. Either he is too foolish to see the harm of the ashfalls, or he cannot stop them, or he is merely unwilling to act. Whether through incompetence, impotence, or malice, he allows this awful state to persist.

If his powers are so great, why does he not cure the skaa of their ignorance and sloth? Why does he not strike down the foolish and cruel within the great noble houses who bring misery to their families and the skaa who serve them? Men die fighting pointless wars between rivals, they die in the fields under the whip and at the hand of abusive lovers who must "clean up their messes." They die stupid, pointless deaths, nobleman and skaa alike. What wonders could we accomplish, if instead of abusing one another we had space to build instead? Either he is too foolish to see the harm of this broken culture he has fostered, or he cannot stop it, or he is merely unwilling to act. Whether through incompetence, impotence, or malice, he allows this awful state to persist.

If his powers are so great, why are the nights filled with terrifying mistwraiths, and our borders plagued by koloss? These monsters haunt our fields and streets, cutting short our working hours and scaring peasants half to death. They sit upon the borders of the Empire, raiding villages and destroying goods. Either he is too foolish to see the danger these creatures pose, or he cannot stop them, or he is merely unwilling to act. Whether through incompetence, impotence, or malice, he allows this awful state to persist.

No skaa revolution will ever succeed, because the skaa have never been permitted to learn the arts of ruling themselves. They have no ability to strategize in battle, not the slightest hint of political acumen. The arts of governance have been denied them, and with that their revolts are forever doomed to failure. Though they are many, they do not have the might of the noble's allomancy, or the terrismen's feruchemy.

No terrisman revolution will ever succeed. The cruel implements of the Lord Ruler's will strike down their most powerful as children to empower the ranks of the Inquisition. They remember the time before his reign, but they bear the weight of a thousand years of suffering, remembered clear as day. Their magics alone could not defeat him when they mounted their resistance, some 40 generations ago.

No kandra revolution will succeed. The contracts binding them to the service of the Lord Ruler are more draconian even than the restrictions put upon the skaa. Their strength and cunning go wasted, for fear of total genocide.

No nobleman revolution will ever succeed, because we have frittered away the years in endless bickering and internal conflicts. While we should have been organizing, using our skills in allomancy and strategy to bring together the disparate forces of the Final Empire's foes, we cut away at each other instead. We wasted the metals prized from the earth with the sweat and blood of the skaa on our own selfish causes. We are birds in gilded cages, and too many of us were fooled by our comfort to realize we were not free.

The only revolution that can succeed is one where all the peoples of Skadrial are united. This is why the Lord Ruler has pitted us against one another. This is what we must overcome. Of all the people, the nobles by far have the greatest debt to repay - not for the sins of our forefathers, but our own indifference in the face of the suffering of kandra, terrisman, and skaa alike. For our part in the Final Empire's cruelty. This is not a debt that can be repaid in blood, but only in service. We must use these skills we have nurtured, the ability to lead, to bring together all of civilization against its terrible and unfit master. We must stand together: allomancers and feruchemists, kandra and man.

If we emerge victorious, we will already have the foundation for a bright future in the partnerships we have nurtured. And if we fail, then let the Lord Ruler strike us all down and leave the world bare. Let him rule an empire of ghosts, because we will not serve him any longer.

Because this world is a terrible place. Because the Lord Ruler is too stupid, cruel, or powerless to fix it. Because our children deserve to see the sky, to live and work together in peace. Because no one else is going to save us. We have to save ourselves.

You are eloquent enough to get away with talking about your character.
You could probably find an entertaining way to repeat one monosyllabic word 200 times.  :argh!:

So Wrayn and Friend 1 (who we will now be referring to as "Boobs") are up in Terris, where the feruchemists live. Friend 3 ("The Wall") discovered partway through the game that he was descended from Terrismen and developed the ability to use feruchemy, which is a wildly powerful form of magic if you get enough down time in between ruining things. The feruchemists have been hunted down for centuries, and the only reason that any of them are left is that the Lord Ruler needs to murder them to make the spikes that make the Steel Inquisitors work. Did I mention this is a crapsack world?
Boobs and I have to convince a bunch of people who have been keeping their heads down for 800 years that now is the time for open rebellion. Fortunately, we have a lot of convincing things to say. And boobs, and zinc. We get a 4/5ths majority and an army of feruchemists. To celebrate, we murder the fuck out of the Steel Inquisitor who was waiting for us outside the meeting place and thought he was a smart guy.

To the south, Falstor finds out that the Lord Ruler reanimated both of the Steel Inquisitors we murdered in Direland, and one of them is heading to Eastern Dominance where her family is hiding out with the other refugees. She convinces Murderface and our second shape shifter (late addition to the party) to come with her to stop Reimfang. The Wall has to stay behind, because he is slow and heavy compared to the three of them. They murder the hell out of Reimfang, who turns out just to be a shapeshifter that looks like him and not actually that guy brought back from the dead. Which is good, because holy crap that would suck.
While they're in the neighborhood, they decide to check in on the NPCs that are taking care of our refugees in Eastern Dominance. Murderface discovers that Krea Venture, the designated chump of my household, has been a spy almost the entire game. She was going to try to convince us she was preggers with my fiancee's kid to fuck with the group. If that bitch is still alive by the time I hear this story, that will be corrected.

I have a good chunk of the period between "Oh shit the Lord Ruler's coming" and "Off to Terris against your will!" written up in proper third person like a boss. I'll dump it if there's interest, but it's still a little blocky and if I get any more of the writing done the bulk of it will be before this.

I'm enjoying reading your write ups, and I'm glad I have some familiarity with the setting to know that taking down a Steel Inquisitor is badass.

That said, my opinion of the series has changed from my original expression of it in this thread to, "fuck Sanderson I'm never reading another piece of his garbage again," after the second and third books in the trilogy.

I enjoyed the first book. You'd be doing yourself a favor if you stopped there. I made the same recommendation to my brother in law but he was too excited to not move forward. He regretted it like I did. It's enormous walls of bad writing that stands completely still and goes absolutely nowhere.

Lady Wrayn Venture, the Witch of Edross, de facto Queen of the Independent Nation of Direland, woke up aching and miserable. She fumbled at her bedstand until her fingers curled around the small glass vial they'd been searching for. She undid the stopper and downed the contents in a gulp, burning the zinc as soon as it reached her belly. The nameless, unfocused ache subsided, but that failed to improve her mood overmuch.
After a few moments more nestled in the soft blankets, she arose and began the day's work. She got out a large satchel and looked around for what needed packing. First things first: they would be gone for how many days? Seven? Eight? That would be...she did the math in her head quickly, at least 56 vials. Best make it a round 60 to be safe. She emptied the drawers in her room and counted out 37. Nowhere near enough. She hurriedly wrapped a robe around her bedclothes and raided the supply in her office. 22 in her desk, three more in a hollowed out book on the shelf (she'd found it there when she inherited the office from Harana, might as well put it to use), one in the vase that was a gift from some dignitary fifty years ago, and an envelope of dry zinc flakes behind the painting that hung behind her desk. She took them all. She wouldn't be coming back here, anyway.
She went back to her room and packed up all the zinc. She took out her green traveling dress and a pair of tan trousers. They were sturdy and practical, but the dress was embroidered along the hems with a light, leafy pattern that made it look a little less pedestrian. Then she frowned, opened up her wardrobe a second time and called out "Maves? I need a second opinion in here."
No one responded.
Shan took her with him, she remembered. All the skaa servants had left with the refugee groups or simply went home, and the last few nobles from House Venture had packed up yesterday. She suddenly became aware of the oppressive silence of the empty keep. For only the second time in so many weeks, she broke down and wept, not fighting the tears at all but letting the wave of loneliness and abject terror wash over her. After a few minutes, she dried the tears with her sleeve, splashed her face with cold water, and set back to getting ready.
She skipped the corset. Stockings, trousers, dress, traveling boots. She brushed her hair, braiding the sides to meet in the middle and tying them together with a ribbon. The rest of her blond hair she put up temporarily so it wouldn't get tangled in her armor. She lifted the breastplate out of its drawer and admired it, not for the first time. The laminated wood plates had been painstakingly crafted from lighter and darker kinds of wood that fit together in a finely detailed pattern that subtly accentuated curves she didn't really have. It had taken the skaa woodworker months to perfect, and she'd made sure Shan paid him generously for it. Jorred, she reminded herself. His name was Jorred, and she'd sent him south with Ladrian to teach the Renaux armorers how to make better metal-free armor and shields. He was gone too.
The shoulders, back, and front were one large piece connected with leather, which she hefted over her head. She tied together the thick leather straps on both sides, pulling it tight around her torso. It felt safe, comforting. She strapped on the upper and lower leg guards, leaving off the arms until she could find someone to help her. Falcom would have people for that.
Next she rifled through her jewelry drawer. Nothing metal, of course. Eventually she settled on a large glass pendant with a green abstract pattern at its center, hanging from a thin black ribbon. It plonked heavily on the breastplate, the weight strangely reassuring. Bethesia. She came up with the process for creating the clear glass panes for the greenhouses, which let in more light and shed the ash more cleanly than the older kind. She'd presented Wrayn with the pendant as a gift when she'd explained the greenhouse proposal. Now she was in Eastern Dominance with Vanir, building greenhouses to feed the refugees.
What else? She cast around the room, not sure how to pack for a trip like this. No one had covered this eventuality in etiquette class. She grabbed an extra change of clothing, a fresh journal, a pair of fountain pens and a well stoppered ink bottle. On a whim, she poked her nose back in the jewelry drawer, grabbing a necklace of glass beads, a pair of thick, wooden bracelets with leaf patterns etched into them, a braided rope belt with small painted clay beads on the tassels, and a heavily folded test printing from the first movable type press they had built. She knew the people who had made all of them. She'd sent all of them away already.
She went back into her office and started a fire, burning everything that named anyone from her house or the revolution. Shan had already destroyed the other copies around the house, but to be sure she went from room to room, examining the offices and libraries for anything incriminating. There were empty shelves everywhere. Finally, she went into the kitchen and packed her food. Hard bread, hard cheese, three wine bottles, a handful of summer squash (she smiled ruefully at these), the dregs from a container of dried fruit, some jerky, and a bag of nuts. It would last a week. She didn't want to stop off in any towns along the way. The cupboards weren't cleaned out entirely; there would be hungry people left after she was gone, and she believed the scavengers should have something to eat.

And then she was gone, too.

Roan greeted her in the square. Falcom and Valencia were already waiting, but Sybelle hadn't arrived yet. Not last. That's all she'd hoped for. Valencia was wearing a sturdy but ornately decorated dark red travelling dress with a belt of polished wooden rings and bright yellow ribbon. Falcom was wearing his own set of wooden armor. They hadn't had time to make very many suits of the beautiful, allomancer-proof armor, but being on the ruling council came with some benefits. He walked over to Wrayn.
"Do you need help with the arms?"
"Yes."
He did not have anyone with him, and simply went to work himself tying the straps along her shoulder and arms. It would have been scandalous just a few weeks ago, even with her dress between them, but now no one noticed or cared. He was a friend of Vanir, and she trusted him implicitly.
Sybelle Tormander arrived in a carriage drawn by a pair of horses. The driver stepped down and assisted her as she exited carefully. All around them, skaa workers and craftsmen were filtering into the square. They didn't know exactly what was happening, but Lady Venture was going to address them and that was always worth watching. There was a magic in her words, like the warmth of a strong drink. They didn't know what they would do without her.

"They say he is invincible. They say he has survived beheading, been burned to a skeleton, they say armies crumble before him. The Lord Ruler is coming, and he is coming for me. He is jealous of the work we have done, he is scared of the limitless potential of the people of Direland. We sent away his armies at great cost to ourselves, and now he is coming himself." Wrayn pulled on the crowd hard, not flaring for fear that the people would notice, but firmly. Courage. Pride. Patriotism. Love. She hadn't intended the last one to go out but it swelled within her. She loved these people. She hadn't even known them before, just faceless skaa. She hadn't hated them, but they were smaller things that needed to be saved, interchangeable. Now she knew these people. She knew their strengths and their sadness, the work they did and the things they had lost along the way. They believed in her, and their belief had changed her.
"I have heard our enemies call me 'witch,' and they believe I control this land, but it is not true. What has transpired here, the good that has been done, is thanks to the common people working together for the common good. We have written ourselves into the history books through the sweat on our brows, through shared burdens and enabling every man to reach his potential. But we have not had enough time." She didn't cry. She was not going to cry. "I will buy you that time. If the Lord Ruler thinks I am the mastermind of the revolution, then he will not be satisfied until he has vanquished me. If he believes the ruling council is the source of Direland's progress, then he will hunt us down like dogs. Instead, we ride to meet him. And though we may not hope to defeat him in battle, we know we will die on our feet. We will not kneel to a cruel and feckless Emperor. We will not allow him to invade our land unanswered. We are free people, not merely in our land but in our hearts, and he cannot take this from us.
"Those of you who choose to stay in Edross, I pray you keep your heads down for the times ahead. Do not fight him, do not call attention to yourselves. Keep the farms and the greenhouses working, build where you can and teach your children when no one is listening. Keep alive the dreams of Direland. And one day, one day soon, we will be powerful enough to take on even the shard of infinity and win.
"I want you all to live to see that day." No, not going to cry. "I want you to know that I will be with you, in spirit if I cannot be there in the flesh. I want you to know that I love this place, and I would do anything to save it. I would not trade these few months we have had for anything in creation." Pride. Selflessness. Duty. Love. It washed out of her and her audience, more than a few of them visibly weeping. No fear. Courage. They were a proud people. She would not let herself question whether they would still be proud without her, they had done too much, changed too much together and as individuals. The skaa walked upright like lords, cleaned their faces of soot in the mornings and evenings. They paid the washerwomen to repair the holes in their garments and the cobblers for proper shoes. They learned to read and write and argue, knew the law and dabbled in ethics and philosophy. Of course, they worked too. They were practical people and these were desperate times, but they approached their problems in a way that was new in this world: not like a hopeless peasant, not like a spoiled noble, not even like the ambitious craftsmen. They collaborated. It was the one thing the Lord Ruler worked so hard to prevent, and it was making them great. It wasn't moving fast enough, but it was happening. Even if this land fell, even if they had to run to the four corners of the empire, their fearlessness and intelligence would live on, and infect others.
They were free.

Falcom and Wrayn opted to sit atop the carriage, Falcom taking the reins. She pulled on the crowds as they left town, the familiar patterns of pride, patriotism, selflessness, and courage blooming in the people one last time. When they were finally past the outskirts of town and there was no one left to pull on, she kept burning zinc anyway. Just in case.
"I never properly thanked you for doing this," she finally said.
"Couldn't very well leave you to die on your own," he answered. "Wouldn't look right."
She nodded, and they rode in silence for a while.
"When we get there, I hope you don't mind, but I'm going to have to mess with your head."
"The thing you were going to do for the Kandra?"
"It should help us, too. Not completely stop him from using emotional allomancy, just make it less effective. The only problem is I can't use it on myself."
He nodded. "If it comes to that, I'll do my best to take care of you."
"Thank you."
They did not speak again until they stopped for the night. Small talk about food, building a fire. Wrayn felt the last of her zinc for the day burn out in her belly, and decided to turn in for the night. Something hit her in the back of the head, hard. She tried to spin around to face her attacker but strong hands held her, and the second blow sent her into darkness.

Not really?

We got together an army, marched up to Dicknose's front doorstep, and wrecked shit. He came out and owned all of our shit so hard we couldn't move, then proceeded to use chromium to remove all the metals in our systems. And then he hit Murderface, who has a better chromium rating than him, which extinguished all the Lord Ruler's metals, and he got murderfaced.

I did get to spit in his face, though. I was really hoping to get that in :)

And while I'm at it bumping old nerd threads...

I got permission from the first GM to run a legacy campaign in this setting 100 years out from the end of the first campaign. The players will be in a small country along a major shipping route, and they will be trying to rise to power at a time when the world is experiencing the equivalent of the enlightenment and the early industrial revolution and the first major civil rights movement all at the same time.

In preparation for this, I have created a terrible name generator. I will be working on getting an online version of it available eventually, but for now, some samples:

Have you considered incorporating the greater Cosmere (http://stormlightarchive.wikia.com/wiki/Cosmere) into your game?

Our group has consciously rejected a substantial portion of the god-tier stuff from the Cosmere. In our version of events, the Lord Ruler was an idiot who didn't understand that black ash is actually going to make your planet hotter, moron, and so when we cleared up the Ashmounts things got better (but not back to the old normal) and neither Ruin nor Preservation have any driving consciousness or long-term goals.

That's probably for the better.  That stuff might be better suited for a high end campaign, but I suppose a lot of how it actually works is unknown, and trying to fit surgebinding and so on into Allomancy would be quite time consuming.

Not to mention if someone got their hands on a shardblade...

So I started running a game 100 years out because I couldn't decide how to resolve the inevitable civil/world war at about that time. One of the players has been posting summaries to r/mistborn in the hopes that we make Sanderson cry.

Short version: new campaign focuses on Kenwick Mannix (the same player as the MURDER MURDER MURDER guy in the first game) and his trusty band of ne'er do wells -- Fiesal "Weasel" Profoste (a sketchy Terris "steward"), Fairenough Hasting (a steel compounder and courier), Pindewlyss Penrod (a tineye and the bitch of his noble house), and Indra (a bendalloy/aluminum twinborn with mild dissociative identity disorder) -- as they lie, cheat, poison, and steal their way into political power in the city of Dorming.

They have so far

Next game they will be purchasing House Ossment's everything by offering an alternative to bankruptcy that will go horribly wrong for Ossment because Fiesal is a rat bastard when it comes to finances and contracts. They may also ruin a shipment of very expensive clothing from House Merwades on its way to Luthadel, because heaven forbid they actually talk with people to negotiate deals instead of ruining their lives.

Oh look, this again

South to the south there's a place I know
Where the streams run clean and the cool winds blow
Wish I could lay my head down low
But my lady calls and away I go

Said "take your sword and take your spear
And a kiss from the ones who hold you dear
I'll wash away all your crippling fear
And we'll make this the empire's final year"

Skaa to the left and terris to the right
And the nobleman come to make things right
They said none could best the emperor's might
But they're holding strong and prepared to fight

The tower looms, the fires blaze
Our whole world in the balance sways
The inquisition's iron gaze
Can't hold us to their broken ways

I gave my life to the queen's command
So here I'll hold and here I'll stand
Pretty little thing tried to take my hand
But my heart belongs to Direland

We danced and drank as the empire fell
And what comes next no man can tell
But I'll hold you close and I'll serve you well
My warrior queen and my blushing belle
