Can I suggest two books related to the field?  The Illuminatus Trilogy and The Illuminati Papers.  While not exactly _about_ Discordia, they have interesting references and can be fun reads :)

no, you can NOT suggest some more of RAW's lame-ass hippie shitfest books.

Christ, if you wanna throw your money away on something that you obviously don't get (as evidenced  by your willingness to throw your money away on it), at least get the BOTSG or Revelation X or something slightly less puerile.

RAW is useful as an outreach tool, even if he is a goddamn hippie.

The operative word in that sentence being "tool". 8-)  Besides, I'm only adding free books.  Screw anyone who wants to pay for shit.

Yeah, I was loaned Illuminatus, most of what I've read of his I've either borrowed or bought used, and what I bought new I've loaned out to plenty of people to prevent them from giving him too much money.

What exactly is it about RAW that pisses you off so much?
Title: Re: List of Discordian books
Post by: LMNO on October 18, 2006, 07:10:13 PM
From what I can gather, it's his "I have no real ending so I'll make all the characters drop acid and then do a Burroughs/Joyce-style cut up that's supposeed to be deep but is just really annoying" style.

He's a better philosopher than fiction writer, admit it.

So he wrote a good book with a shit ending.

He's still neccesary reading.
Title: Re: List of Discordian books
Post by: East Coast Hustle on October 18, 2006, 07:39:29 PM
meh. I agree that RAW did some valuable things, and maybe I'll even agree that Illuminatus! is required reading at a very early point in one's attempt to break out of Prison(tm), but that doesn't mean that I want to hear about it or discuss it. I mean, when your kid finally figures out how to add and subtract, you'd be proud of him, but you wouldn't go take his equations around to all your friends and co-workers and say "see? this is addition. see how he adds 3 and 6 to get 9? notice how adding 6 and 3 ALSO gets you 9? crazy, huh?"

just saying.
Title: Re: List of Discordian books

Fair enough . . . I was just getting the impression that some people wish he'd never written anything at all, which seemed odd.

And I agree with you, LMNO.

That's the thing though.  It's subject material that, though very basic one is expected to know.

It is however, a bit elementary and moot to me.
Title: Re: List of Discordian books

I think it probably serves as a useful introduction to people who haven't been exposed to the concept before, or for people like me who were previously unaware that their condition has a name.

You should keep in mind, though, that n00bs coming in who want to discuss those works could have new insight to the old material that you yourself don't have.

It does happen, occasionally.

Thanks, no problem.  Yeah.  Alot of these are fairly recent.  I suggest you read in this rough chronological order:

The Summa
The Apocrypha
The Zenarchist CookBook
The Book of Eris

The Metaclysmia Discordia
The Wise Book of Baloney
The Apotheosis Psychoerotica
The Principia Entropius

Memoirs of a Daydreamer
The Jonesboria Discordia
A Pocket full of Chaos

You'll also notice at least 3 of these books have bits from people on here (actually there are four, but one is for guessing).

They also sell books, but I prefer it as I had troubles contacting poee.co.uk.

SPAMMAGE

Principia Discordia Released in Hardback

http://www.principiadiscordia.co.uk

That's right folks. The POEE | UK Resource Centre and our publishing sub-sect Synaptyclypse Generator have finally got our finger out of our asses and published the damned thing.

Here we are in 2007 (or YOLD 3173), forty-eight, or forty-nine years after Mal2 and Omar's Discordian revelations at the hands of the Goddess Eris. Synaptyclypse Generator is proud to present this special edition of the legendary counter-culture classic, the bible of Discordianism. We have spared no cabbage-power in preparing this wonderful hardback edition for your enjoyment and enlightenment. Illuminet disappeared, Loompanics have closed their doors and Ronin have released a mashed up paperback edition. We at Synaptyclypse Generator decided that this wasn't good enough. We wanted our Principia. The real Principia. And what's more, we wanted something special, we wanted it in hardback! Principia Discordia has been republished a number of times over the years, but not since 1976 has it been available to the general public in hardback format. So we took it upon ourselves to produce this edition. We have done the best we could have hoped to ensure a quality and cherishable version of Principia Discordia and hope you fall in love with the Principia Discordia all over again, just as we have.

For this edition, we have included Kerry W. Thornley's introduction to the 1991 Illuminet Press edition and Robert Anton Wilson's Loompanics Unlimited introduction. We include all the material from the last Loompanics printing and any odd bits left over from the Illuminet version. We have closing 'Outroductions' by none other than the Rev.Dr Jon Swabey of Apocrypha Discordia fame and 'crackpot historian,' Adam Gorightly, author of The Prankster and the Conspiracy, The Story of Kerry Thornley and How He Met Oswald and Inspired the Counterculture. It also features the most sumptuously gorgeous cover that any edition has ever had.

$25.99/£12.99 + shipping, Amazon Marketplace and other sellers may discount it slightly, but not much as it's POD.

Best UK price is currently The Book Depository (http://www.bookdepository.co.uk/WEBSITE/WWW/WEBPAGES/showbook.php?id=1846856043): £13.30 with 'free' shipping. Not much in the way of discounts on the US Amazon unfortunately.

I am new to PD as well. I actually stumbled onto it when trying to understand who that bob guy was associated with my first linux distro(slackware).  And then a penpall of mine signed his letters with allways a fnord or 2.. so life led me to the book.. I was reading it at work(a little coffee shop/bookstore) and all my coworkers were like o yah I have heard of discordians they are in this book, one ILLUMINATUS trilogy..  so I picked that up as well.. even though it was lots and lots of nonsense I thought it rocked! I got more involved in it than I did PD.. yet.. I am still a n00b.. I currently enjoying some of RAWs other books as well.. and maybe I am a silly 22 year old hippie.. with strange notions.. but I still would argue that RAW is worthwhile reading.

Well, I don't have my hands on a hardcover yet.  I know it doesn't have the "extra" material in the SJ version that was submitted by SJGames fans.  Beyond that you'd have to ask Syn.  If you go to www.poee.co.uk you can get the details there.

actually they did make a bible-alice wordsalad once via one of them markov chain random prose generator things.

sorry if that doesn't make sense to you, but i don't feel like explaining it now. maybe i can dig up the link.

ok little explanation: basically they made a statistical model of the words in the bible (or, part of the old testament i think) and one of alice in wonderland, threw them both together, threw a few (computer) dice, and generated a piece of text that statistically looks like both the bible and alice in wonderland.

it's mostly random sentences that start out as bible text and then with a sudden turn of phrase start talking about the mad hatter and tea or something.

Also, you can make an introduction at the apple talk introductions thread, and a perusal of the Black Iron Prison thread is often a good way to catch up on what we (most of us) do here.

I think that Bob's reading is extremely good and useful... if you know what's going on (or was going on) before the book was written, and then in conjunction with several of his other books. His style can appear insane (but remember, he's only half the author).

The first time through, I recommend people read it as a work of fiction. However, for Discordians, the book is a near perfect study of how to properly pull of a international mindfuck, while at the same time spreading memes, meme bombs and meme clusters... and getting paid for it. Masks of the Illuminati can be considered a cross between a mild mindfuck and a step by step guide on doing mindfucks. The Cosmic Trigger series provides an extremely  interesting journal of self-mindfucking, while discussing the philosophical/psychological causes, effects and principles which make up most of Bob's system of Model Agnosticism. Quantum Psychology and Prometheus Rising provide excellent sources of guides, experiments and exercises which I think may be necessary for a large segment of our species if they hope to break out of prison.

To read Bob for humor can be enjoyable... however, Twain did a better job of satire in fiction. To read Bob as a psychologist or philosopher will probably be frustrating, since he tends to throw out anything you may have learned on the subject. To read Bob as a messiah, or a leader, or a teacher... will result in him coming from the grave to make fun of you,

However, to read Bob as a Discordian, practicing his Discordian rites, rituals and mindfucks (from which we can learn something by observation), then you may see him as a grand sage of absurdity.

And that, I think is a damned fine thing.

(Folks who don't like Bob, usually don't see him from more than one point in a model... not always, but I find it appears common).

Well, I don't have my hands on a hardcover yet.  I know it doesn't have the "extra" material in the SJ version that was submitted by SJGames fans.  Beyond that you'd have to ask Syn.  If you go to www.poee.co.uk you can get the details there.
I never felt that the SJ Games stuff sat well with the rest of the PD, so I didn't include it. Also, if I had there would have been some major stinkitude. The Hardback is unique in other ways. BUY IT! http://www.principiadiscordia.co.uk

Cain,
Will any of the Discordian PDFs be made available ever again on this site?

On this site?  I don't know, ECH owns the domain now, so its possible, though of course it will likely take a fair bit of work.

I could probably upload most of the books to an online hosting site in the interim, while Synpatyx gets POEE back up, if that will do?

A backup/mirror sounds like a good idea.  I'll give you what I've got, once it uploads.  Well, the kopyleft material anyway (copyrighted stuff can be obtained in other ways.  PM me for links).

Edit: here we are http://mihd.net/apgbmr

how about we post a mihd link to stuff we got in the propaganda directory? posted with title and author would be enough to satisfy most kopyleft, right?

So my copy of the beautiful new hardback PD arrived yesterday.  Syn did a masterful job putting it together.  The cover is quite stunning, and the quotes on the back are awesome as well.  Obviously the stuff in between is good too.  Also, thanks to Syn for the thanks from Syn.  Not sure what I did to warrant it but it is appreciated nonetheless.  Now, I just have to decide what to do with my SJGames version.  Or that is, decide which co-worker to give it to.

I believe I have the sole surviving copy of the "Honest Scroll Of Lies". The Goddess licked my Pineal, suggested I join this forum...and offer to donate it to the Invisible College.

Bruncture is the 'dance' people do on the sidewalk when they are trying to get past each other, but keep getting in the other's way.

Snart, on the other hand, is an unexpected exhalation of gas through the nasal cavity.

Felix was having you on by pretending the two words are related.

While not exactly a Discordian book, you might want to check out The Prankster and the Conspiracy: The Story of Kerry Thornley and How He Met Oswald and Inspired the Counterculture by Adam Gorightly with an intro by Robert Anton Wilson.  It tells more about the beginnings of Discordianism and the Thornley-Lee Harvey Oswald-John F. Kennedy assassination connection than any book I know.

Verthaine probably messed up the target date while travelling between multiverses.  It happens.

Jan 1, 1970 is the start of the UNIX time epoch.

it's the date/time you get when a UNIX timestamp (measured as seconds since midnight Jan 1 1970) is accidentally set to zero.

so probably a computer glitch somewhere.

Of these two explanations, one is obviously bogus.  (Yes, I know you can see it coming).

Computer glitch?  HA!  Obviously an attempt to cover up St. Verthaine the Goth's Multiversal Transport System!

The author of Condensed Chaos, Phil Hine, is a Discordian... well, as much as any Chaote "is" anything. So Condensed Chaos is probably a Discordian work, but it has less to do with Discordia than it does with Chaos Magic.

His book "Prime Chaos" has two appendicies about neophilic irreligions, entitled Liber Nice and Liber Nasty. Liber Nice is about Discordia, and Liber Nasty is about Cthulhu cults. Hine gives a pretty good introduction to both groups, albeit from a rather occultish point of view.

Well that might be because a smart discordian knows better than to waste their time with that, a dumb discordian wouldnt be able to do it, a lazy discordian would just skip it and a Really Real Discordian For Realness has been encoding the answer in every 23rd character of their posts for years now AND YOU STILL HAVENT NOTICED :argh!:

Also, there have been exactly 23 seeds for the last 6 hours or so.   :fnord:

6 hours? The file is less than 50mb.  Are you on dial-up or something?

Also, there have been exactly 23 seeds for the last 6 hours or so.   :fnord:

Wireless.  Oh so crappy wireless.  Its currently downloading at 1kb/s

I full agree to that statement, nice done ratatosk

RAW is fine.

Thanks, no problem.  Yeah.  Alot of these are fairly recent.  I suggest you read in this rough chronological order:

The Summa
The Apocrypha
The Zenarchist CookBook
The Book of Eris

The Metaclysmia Discordia
The Wise Book of Baloney
The Apotheosis Psychoerotica
The Principia Entropius

Memoirs of a Daydreamer
The Jonesboria Discordia
A Pocket full of Chaos

You'll also notice at least 3 of these books have bits from people on here (actually there are four, but one is for guessing).
I've read all of them but two, but will get to them eventually.

Everyone's entitled to their own opinion, but in mine, a couple of these are great.

As to what I've read of RAW, I generally like the non-fiction more than the fiction.  But I loved Wilson and Shea's The Illuminatus! Trilogy in spite of the apparent non-ending.  I agree with Ratatosk--read it as a Discordian work, and it's great.  (Besides, the really real ending is on page 37 of the Dell trade paperback edition, beginning with "But in Cherry Hills mental hospital in Sunderland, England" and ending with either "'My back hurts,' Mary Lou says," or maybe with "WE'RE GONNA ROCK  ROCK  ROCK AROUND THE CLOCK TO  NIGHT."  But then I also love Monty Python and the Holy Grail, even though it doesn't have a real ending either.

It can be accessed at http://sockmonkeycabal.info/?page_id=35 (http://sockmonkeycabal.info/?page_id=35). It's currently incomplete, but I'm working on it. If you see that I'm missing something, let me know, especially if you have a copy of whatever it is that I'm missing. I want to build as complete a free discordian libarary as possible.

no, you can NOT suggest some more of RAW's lame-ass hippie shitfest books.

Christ, if you wanna throw your money away on something that you obviously don't get (as evidenced  by your willingness to throw your money away on it), at least get the BOTSG or Revelation X or something slightly less puerile.

I really enjoyed reading the Illuminatus Trilogy (it was well worth the $3 off eBay), even though it can be quite confusing at times. I found myself having to re-read pages once in awhile, but I'm glad I stuck with it because it is one of my favorite books now. I would agree that the ending wasn't the greatest... still I can't wait to read it again. Hopefully I will be able to pick up on many thing I missed the first time through.

Anyways... This book basically led me to this site, and having read your responses about Robert Anton Wilson, I am not sure if I will be welcomed here. What's the worst that can happen, right?

"Atlas Shrugged" is made fun of in the Illuminatus! trilogy (and more so in 'Schrodinger's Cat', the parallel-universe pseudo-sequel to I!3), I think RAW uses the title "Atlas Sneezed" in his book (yes, that's a AynRand/orgasm joke).

QuoteImmortals born in the thirteenth century, Lucien Riordan and Ranulf Styr have waited centuries to be reunited with their love. Want for her cemented their friendship through time even as it tore it apart. She changed their lives, made them want better, and they plan to show her that. There's only one catch—she's never met them before.

Eris Brue is flattered by Lucien and Ranulf's attention but they are her bosses. She doesn't want to get tangled up in an office romance, especially not with two men. Their joint seduction overcomes her resolve and she gives in even though she knows they are keeping secrets that could doom their relationship.

Centuries of planning have finally come to fruition. Lucien and Ranulf have a short amount of time to make Eris love them, because once time has her, everything could come to an end.

Even though Peter Lamborn Wilson/Hakim Bey does not come out and say it, though he does come close on a few occasions, I have always considered him to be the second primary "thealogian," or "atheologian," or Discordianism thinker (Thornley and Hill aside). Of course RAW is the other for this period... you know, the pre-internet boom of Discordian texts. He did a few lecture tours with RAW, published reviews of his work (and vice versa), and wrote him a lovely obit in 5th Estate. [http://theanarchistlibrary.org/library/peter-lamborn-wilson-liquor-and-weed-for-him-were-bardic-fuel-peter-lamborn-wilson-s-obituary-f]

The early 1961-1964 Discordian documents stress the importance of non-canonical Discordian works and authors, who they dub "Compilers of Truth-Lay". It seems to me that TAZ, like so many other works (esp. Terry Southern's The Magic Christian) are rightfully placed on Discordian sites as Discordian in nature.

ya dig?

Only someone who claims to be innocuous while reaping the benefit of their rape and murder of untold billions and then kavetching about how they "too" 'have to pay at the pump' can be considered the utter and complete negative influence on society (not to mention the ultimate hypocrite)... unless you work for the oil industry as a proponent as to how to stop the irrevocable harm that you are doing, well there really are no words... Maybe you turn the oil in to pixie dust that offsets all the negative influences of oil... whatever the case may be, I sincerely support you in your plight.. especially the ones that don't turn said billions into wage slaves... and also outright slaves... maybe you work on increasing fuel efficiency.. maybe you don't.. call me a 'hippie' but as soon as you call me that you are a yuppie.. and it disgusts me that I even have to write this, because as we all know, we should all be fueled by the friction of time against space... which, having read the Trilogy, should be powering us all... or did you forget the ending?

But it's perfectly okay for YOU to benefit from oil, of course.  That's different, right?  Using it is fine, and slamming the people who produce it is fine, and there's no fucking hypocrisy there, is there?

And fuck the trilogy.  The ending was James Joyce nonsense for which RAW should have been beaten.  And let me know how well "the friction of time against space" keeps your fucking house warm this winter, and how many miles you get off a fucking tank.

Because I like to run protestors over with a forklift, while spraying hydrocarbons all over the countryside, of course.

Zara's a typical useless fucking hippie.  He wants all the benefits of society, so that he can scream about how those benefits arrive, either in the form of oil, or food, or anything else.

He is the ULTIMATE spoiled & entitled American.  He's a damn CARICATURE.

And he's been posting here on and off for 7 years, so it isn't like he's some 16 year old that hasn't figured things out yet.  He's had years, and he still acts like a petulant child.

Meh, not even just this guy... that whole dog and pony show... sometimes its funny and then sometimes.  Christ.  It's like you know when people make fun of Catholics for worshipping statues of weeping virgins and incense and rosaries and yakkity yak?  That.  These guys and their pentabarfs, and their flax, and good god... and the funny thing is they talk about menus and whether or not they are edible, meanwhile MEANWHILE they are photocopying the menu and microwaving that photocopy, slapping a little hot sauce on it, and chowing the fuck down.

And the Concordia Blog still gets emails from people "correcting" it... almost weekly.  It makes me realize I never really tried hard enough with that thing...

And you're right, by the way. The reason most of us (I believe...I certainly do) come down so hard on pinealists is that they're BORING.  Problem is, like republicans, the worst offenders take that fact to mean they just aren't being pineal ENOUGH.  So they ramp it up.

waitress: that's the add.

Sal: Sh*t!... you got a nickle so I can call my numbers guy?

Wow, I think I may have gravitated to my own level!

Hiya, Zarathustrasbastardson, I like your stuff! In particular, I think the above exchange is rather pricelessly funny.

Perhaps we have similarly deficient senses of humour?

What possesses you to still pester Roger, who is so obviously beyond hope?

My favorite color is SHUT THE FUCK UP! but it's hard to put that on a crayon.

No, it ain't. Just use a long crayon. Or smaller letters. You may even be able to arrange the words in two rows around the circumference of the crayon for pleasing effect.

SHUT THE
FUCK UP!!

Like that, for instance.

And in fact, if you take the equation density = mass/volume, and divide the substance of their respective posts by the volume of those posts, you get about the same results as interstellar hydrogen (ie, one atom per cubic meter).

We thought since it's still 5/23/17 in this time zone, it might be the right day to make this public, even though it isn't 100% ready yet...

D.I.S.L.I.B. - the Discordian Internet Society's Library of Interesting Books (https://dislib.lima.zone)

QuoteAbout the D.I.S.L.I.B.

The D.I.S.L.I.B. is the Discordian Internet Society's Library of Interesting Books. Or maybe "DISLIB" is just short for Discordian Library. Who knows?

It is a collection of all kinds of stuff, may they be discordian, discordian-related or just interesting for chaotic scholars and followers of other silly cults. We hope that all the collected stuff we are offering is free. In case it isn't, and especially if it is your un-free stuff we are offering *gulp* illegaly here, just tell us (as soon as the corresponding forms are ready), and we take it down.

As you might have guessed from the logo - a winged St. Gulik that has been shamelessly adapted to a pseudo-retro-egyptian style - we have been inspired by the ancient Library of Alexandria. Also, by the Bibliotheca Anonoma (http://bibanon.org/) project, the Discordian Archives and the Discordian Online Library of the M'.'M'.'M'.' (http://nmrk2359.wixsite.com/dolmmm), which also provided the base for our current stock.

Speaking of "we" all the time, you might wonder who we are. Maybe you don't. We tell you anyway. Currently, there's two of us: Abbot Ron Oxymo, head of the Ordo Dea Discordia and His Quasaric Sphericity the Bwana Honolulu, head of Zimmer523, the German Discordian AnArchive. But we are open for applications.

Also, submissions. Are you missing some important work? Maybe your own? Give us a hint (again, as soon as the corresponding forms are ready).

A lot of stuff is still missing from the list. We are working on that. And yes, there are other online libraries of free discordian books out there, we know. But redundancy might make sure this stuff won't disappear so quickly, and maybe we can kinda network those libraries. Also we noticed that other listings are very much english-centered, and so we try to cover more languages. There's already some german-language stuff online as well as portuguese writings in the queue.

Ooft! I have two misprint proof copies coming in the post (because I am dumb). The third copy is the correct one and will be approved and ready to buy within the next 14 days give or take a few.

If anyone wants one of the misprint proofs, pick up the postage and you can have one.
The only problem with them is that I uploaded a partially updated file and only some of the changes I made went through... Twice!
There's nothing particularly wrong per se, but I wanted to remove references to POEE UK since it's not really operating as intended and won't ever be again. :lulz:
