News:

Bigotry is abound, apprently, within these boards.  There is a level of supposed tolerance I will have no part of.  Obviously, it seems to be well-embraced here.  I have finally found something more fucked up than what I'm used to.  Congrats. - Ruby

Propaganda Depository / Help finding old POEECasts
October 10, 2013, 06:59:50 PM
Hey, all. I've been trying to locate any of the old POEECast stuff (like the recording of The Apocrypha to the Vengeful Testament of Eris, the remixed song version of that God Warrior lady from Wife Swap, etc).

If anyone has any leads on where I could find these - assuming they still exist, of course - I'd greatly appreciate it. Internet searches and poking around the internet archive have turned up absolutely nothing (unless I've been doin' it wrong, which is always a possibility).

To put things in perspective, at age 17 (when its legal to learn to drive in the UK), I was backpacking in Peru.  Admittedly, I'm likely an outlier.  But some kids invariably will be.

The concept of raising kids to be able to function independently seems sadly to be on the decline. I see parents who either detach and leave their kids adrift to figure everything out on their own, or try to take an authoritative tack and attempt to control their child, which leads either to subservient and endlessly dependent young adults, or to power struggles, backlash, and estrangement. The parents who take the middle road and provide guidance, advice, respect, security, attachment, and  trust, the parents who are authoritative without being authoritarian, are the ones who end up with the seemingly-remarkable in our times independent young adults who are actually functional and can make adult decisions and do adult things on their own.

Authoritarian parenting sucks anyway because the parent isn't modeling anything like respect or boundaries. I know some kids who will mindlessly destroy anything, of anyone's, for seemingly no reason, the minute nobody's looking. But I think the reason is their mom: "If your room isn't picked up in five minutes, all these toys are going IN THE TRASH". And she does it, and pats herself on the back for taking a hard line "parenting".

That's exactly it. You have to model respect if you want kids to LEARN respect. I am having a bit of a power struggle with surprise daughter's older brother over that right now. He has Ideas about how to raise kids, but they're based on control and punishment. Also he's a child himself, and one who was raised by completely incompetent parents. His ideas are so wrongheaded it's laughable.

You hit the nail on the head, there. My mother was very firmly in the "do as I say right now or else I'll beat the shit out of you" camp, and while it was "effective" then, our relationship is extremely strained now - almost to the point that I want nothing to do with her. In a household with no respect, kids often learn not to respect themselves, which is so incredibly shitty.

OT: I don't think there's anything wrong with kids having smartphones, really. It's a hell of a better option than searching around for a (now practically non-existent) payphone and hoping you have enough loose change to call your parents to let them know you're not dead. I understand the potential problems with social interactivity and distracted behaviour, but I would imagine that's an opportunity to teach your children how/when to properly use the phone, and when not to (in school, in work, etc).

Spent the better part of my weekend listening to all of the episodes. No regrets here.

/revives the thread

This is awesome, and the mazes look great. I can't make mazes for shit, but I'm all for putting these up around my campus. I'm gonna get started on this on Monday.

YEARS LATER:

I did a ton of these this year for my college's egg hunt for kids a few weeks ago. I took some of the tamer sayings, drew pictures on slips of paper with the message, and put them in the eggs with candy and such. The kids got a kick out of it, and I think some parents dug it, too (although I did have a lot of confused looks, but that's par the course). If I can find some pictures, I'll post 'em here.

I can think of a few people on this board who actually parent.

Ack, no offense intended to present/board company, sorry.
It was generally speaking, or at least in the area that I currently live in.

Hell, I'd be amazed if anyone actually parents anymore. A younger friend of mine (I'm 25, he's 19) fucking raged and pouted like a child because his parents couldn't get him both a leather jacket and a 360 game for his birthday. Methinks he's allergic to jobs, as well as a strong sense of appreciation for what he has (a top of the line computer, spending money, etc etc); if I acted like he did, I would have gotten the shit slapped out of me.
All I seem to see is nothing but a bunch of spoiled brats who think they're entitled to everything in the world for being born.

Then again, this could be because I worked in retail lots and read STFU Parents, so..

It's revolting to me how many parents think it's cute when their little girls act like junior prostitutes. It's like the fashions; one of my friends calls it "Junior Slut; Fashion for Tots".

Seen this yet?: http://celebrities.ninemsn.com.au/blog.aspx?blogentryid=585857&showcomments=true&rss=yes

Because they couldn't over-sexualize little girls any more, amirite?  :argh!:

To quote Dr. Steel: That was absolutely disgusting.   :|  :vom:

Yes, they're talented to be able to dance like that - but why would their parents approve to dancing like that? Childhood has changed...

Good points, OP. Have you ever seen the documentary called The Corporation? It likens corporations to sociopaths - it's quite an interesting film.
Here's the trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xa3wyaEe9vE

Nice.  Will you be compiling a bestiary?

Is it sad that, when I saw this, my first thought was "I wish I had a strategy guide for my job"?  :I
