Title: NIGEL, FOR FUCK'S SAKE.
Post by: The Good Reverend Roger on April 28, 2013, 05:36:06 AM
WHAT'S GOING ON DOWN THERE?

http://www.oregonlive.com/politics/index.ssf/2013/04/daily_pledge_of_allegiance_req.html

DON'T MAKE ME TURN THIS COUNTRY AROUND.

We said the Pledge of Allegiance every day in my school. Only towards the end of my senior year did it become a problem. Kids started rising up . . . and getting detention and then suspension. Apparently if you don't say it, you're an un-American commie-pinko faggot bastard or something. And if you DO say it, then you're a Patriotic hero of my little ponies and stars spring from your twat dispensing truth, justice, and seasonally appropriate confetti.

I didn't really care one way or the other. It was just another bullshit part of school and one of the least irritating ones at that.

The pledge itself is meaningless because it's swearing an oath to be loyal to one country above all others, made by little kids who know nothing of world affairs, have no understanding of political events HERE, and in most cases have never even been to another country, much less lived there. IOW, they can't make an informed choice. It's like making a bunch of eight year olds say marriage vows to somebody they haven't even met.

Everybody's OK with that because it doesn't mean anything, anyway. Like CPD said, it's just another bullshit part of school. You just have to SAY it, not mean it or understand the implications. It sends a really bullshit message to kids about giving their word (with hand over heart) but nobody seems to give a fuck about that.

"SAY THE SHIT, YOU DON'T HAVE TO MEAN IT, JUST SAY IT OR ELSE."

I know my state is 99.9% inbred rednecks, but I didn't expect THIS.

It struck me as a Texas/Florida/Alabama/Mississippi thing too.

What I remember of Oregon is mostly hippies and winos, not THOSE.

Oh, it hasn't passed yet. It's just some wingnut bullshit being reported by the Oregonian, a newspaper so bullshit that they can't give it away. It won't pass.

There has NEVER been a law requiring the Pledge of Allegiance in our schools in my entire life. I mean, Oregon is insane and inbred as fuck, it was illegal to be black here until like 1950, but it's also so fiercely individualistic that it won't even put fucking fluoride in the water and all the poor people are dying from tooth-decay-related heart failure. This state is insane in a completely different way. The rep proposing this bill is from MEDFORD, which is basically Oregon's Bakersfield but more inbred.

So Medford wants to be part of Arizona. I would let them, and I would give them all back to Mexico if I could.

I have my Junior High Principal to thank for cementing my will like no one else ever could.

By 8th grade I had decided I would sit for the pledge.

By 9th I grew the balls to do it. There were a few of us. I don't know I could have done it on my own. There was a gulf war and stuff--it made it easier.

My Principal was not pleased. He called us out in the middle of a school assembly. Accused us of being disrespectful. Trying to show off. Something along those lines. It fucking sucked.

I learned then and there that I had a choice between sucking it up and being a fucking hypocrite, or sucking it up and being derided and shamed. He didn't cement my will to never be a hypocrite. He cemented my will to suck it up.

Fuck anybody who forces that choice on kids.

That's great.

In high school we said the pledge every day as well as a moment of silence for praying. I never said the pledge nor cared about it. It was just a couple of minutes for my friends and I to shoot the shit during class. It always seemed very child indoctrination-esque/culty to me. Looking back I wonder how many of my classmates get hard-ons seeing a flag lapel pin on a politician now because of saying the pledge every day though. I mean it has to work on at least some kids, right?

We had the pledge every day. I stopped saying it around 2nd or 3rd grade because I thought it was stupid.
Never did have a teacher complain about it though.

Same here.  But in 6th grade homeroom, I had a teacher who said that anyone who didn't feel like saying it could remain seated if they chose.  I ran into him when I was in high school, and that came up.  He said that the pledge in and of itself was un-American and contrary to everything the founders had said.  It's basically a holdover from the 50s, when the same sort of MAKE EVERYONE LISTEN TO US mentality that we have today was running wild in the nation.

You know, when they threw people in jail for unpopular political ideologies, etc.

IT SEEMS

to go against most sense to want to eat old nasty meat, even in the most dire times.

I AM

as surprised, as is every person i've spoken to about this new ruling. i don't understand why people would be upset by this, except for juvenile reasons. We are citizens of the United States, why would we not pledge our allegiance to the flag we stand as citizens under?

I WAS NOT

aware that p.d. supported separatist motions against/ within/ for the United States.  I think that is very interesting, however incredibly unlikely.

Well, to begin with, pledging allegiance to the flag is pledging allegiance to the regime, not to the people. If you happen to disagree with the regime, it's a forced lie under duress. I am not super down with my kids being forced to pledge allegiance to a surveillance regime which makes free use of torture and indefinite detainment, in violation of its own constitution.

Yes, it is all pretty much just symbolic, but symbolism can be meaningful and it can have an effect on the way we think.

The first definition Merrian-Webster gives for "allegiance" is "the obligation of a feudal vassal to his liege lord" (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/allegiance).

THAT

strikes me as a shitty attitude

Tell it to Mark Twain. What's shitty about questioning leadership at every level, at every age? How is their trust earned? By the colors of a flag waved over countless bodies? If they want my allegiance they should do something to earn it, it doesn't come automatically. That's largely what's wrong with everyone. They just go with the rank flow.

Or tell it to Thomas Paine.

Oh snap, 1700's.

America's over, folks. Nothing to see here, move along...
