"On a personal level, Freaking Out is a process whereby an individual casts off outmoded and restricting standards of thinking, dress and social etiquette in order to express CREATIVELY his relationship to his immediate environment and the social structure as a whole.  Less perceptive individuals have referred to us who have chosen this way of thinking and FEELING as "Freaks", hence the term: Freaking Out. On a collective level, when any number of "Freaks" gather and express themselves creatively through music or dance, for example, it is genereally referred to as a FREAK OUT. The participants, already emancipated from our national social slavery, dressed in their most inspired apparel, realize as a group whatever potential they possess for free expression....become a member of The United Mutations....FREAK OUT!"

Thanks Mangrove, that makes this song even funnier than it already was.

The Monster In The Mirror
Words by Norman Stiles
Music by Christopher Cerf
sung by Grover (Frank Oz)
Quote
Saw a monster in the mirror when I woke up today
A monster in my mirror but I did not run away
I did not shed a tear or hide beneath my bed
Though the monster looked at me and this is what he said:

He said "Wubba wubba wubba wubba woo woo woo"
Wubba wubba wubba and a doodly do
He sang "Wubba wubba wubba" so I sang it too
Do not wubba me or I will wubba you
Do not wubba me or I will wubba you

Told the monster in the mirror, "No, I am not scared"
Then I smiled at him and thanked him for the song that we had shared
Well, the monster thanked me too, he smiled right back and then
The monster in the sang his song again

He said "Wubba wubba wubba wubba woo woo woo"
Wubba wubba wubba and a doodly do
He went "Wubba wubba wubba" so I sang along
Yes, wubba wubba wubba is a monster song
Wubba wubba wubba is a monster song

Wubba wubba wubba wubba woo woo woo
Wubba wubba wubba and a doodly do
He went "Wubba wubba wubba" and I sang along
Wubba wubba wubba wubba wubba wubba
Yes, wubba wubba wubba is a monster song
Wubba wubba wubba is a monster song

If your mirror has a monster in it, do not shout
This kind of situation does not call for freaking out
And do nothing that you would not like to see him do
'Cause that monster in the mirror he just might be you

Singing "Wubba wubba wubba wubba woo woo woo"
Wubba wubba wubba and a doodly do
Wubba wubba wubba you can join in too
Wubba wubba wubba wubba wubba wubba
Yes, if you wubba me then I will wubba you
If you wubba me then I will wubba you

Going wubba wubba wubba is the thing to do
Everytime you wubba us we'll wubba you

'Twas an interesting position they had assumed.

Other than that, sheer junk.  Paul Giamatti was much better in American Splendor.

Yeah, Sideways blew.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spoless Mind was the better hipstr movie that year.

If I had a band nominated for the Mercury prize I'd think someone was trying to end my career.

Fat & over rated? Why it can only be Jim Morrison and his sucky poetry!

And finally....

If I was on a desert island with Michael Moore, I would torment him every day about how, inspite of his 'I'm so appalled by terrorism and the US war machine' schtick, his name still popped up on lists in NY of famous donators to Fenian groups that were funding the IRA. Mudhoney = sooo not grunge.

Soundgarden = probably not grunge

Silverchair = grunge, cuz they called themselves that.

ECH, saying there was no grunge is like saying there was never anything called punk because the bands in the 70's & 80's didn't call themselves punk.

A lot of genre titles fall apart once you start examining the bands who are allegedly in said genre.  For example Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains are so far apart musically yet they were both considered grunge.  Perhaps a better title would have been "Seattle Slew" Or "Rainy Rock"  Then you could throw in Queensryche and Candlebox.

Speaking of Queensryche.  I think they are getting desperate for in 2006 they will release their next album entitled:  Operation Mindcrime II.

To expand on my previous post:

Grunge bands only occured after the general umbrella label "grunge" was used by the industry and/or media, and then new bands voluntarily worked within that label.

Cf:  Punk (stooges vs Blink 182), Goth (Joy Division vs Switchblade Symphony), Metal (the first Sabbath record vs Dokken).

NO ONE in the Seattle music scene likes Queensryche, or considers them to be in any way associated with said music scene. I threw Chris DeGarmo out of the club I was bouncing one time just because he had the temerity to respond with "don't you know who I am?" when I asked him to pay the cover charge.

Candlebox was so fucking GHEY that they MOVED from California to Seattle just so they could take advantage of being a "Seattle Band". Again, no one in the scene with any credibility would even give them the time of day.

yeah, I'll concede the point that there was a "grunge scene" because record labels and shitty music journalists and wanna-be coattail riders said there was...I just feel compelled every time this comes up to make it very clear that no one in that scene at that time who had any talent or credibility EVER considered themselves to be in any sort of cohesive scene, other than that they all sort of recognized that there was a freakish concentration of good bands in the same backwater city at the same time.

also, for anyone who's interested, the best bands from that era haven't even been mentioned.

go download yourself some of the following:

Mother Love Bone

Green River

Skin Yard

Tad

Screaming Trees

I think Geoff Tate's best days are well behind him.  I saw them a few years ago opening for Iron Maiden in Portland.  (Halford was playing too but I missed him)  Maiden slayed but Queensryche was just pathetic.  Tate really struggled to get the high notes.  Actually, he seemed to struggle with the midrange stuff too.  Although I have to give them credit, since they were opening for Maiden they knew better than to play any of the tepid crap from "Hear in the Now Frontier".

the spiderman movies don't count. It's not a trilogy if they're just gonna keep churning out more of those failballs.

More and more you see a movie and at the end, instead of closure, you get some crap STAY TUNED FOR THE NEXT MOVIE IN TWO YEARS bullshit which won't deliver anyway.

Oh man, they're making this into a TRILOGY!

Back to the Future

Terminator
Austin Powers
The Lord of the Rings
