Title: Pirate Pass-Off: A Very Simple Game
Post by: Cramulus on October 03, 2008, 07:32:10 PM
(I forget from whence I lifted this idea.)

Very simple: Print out a few of these cards. Then get rid of them.

EDITED TO ADD: HERE ARE LINKS TO PDFS:
http://www.scribd.com/doc/17456504/Pirate-Pass-Off-Cards-Large-With-Ninja-Card
http://www.scribd.com/doc/17456465/Pirate-Pass-Off-for-Avery-Business-Cards

this game works best at conventions, concerts, club meetings, college campuses,
or anywhere people are gathered.

The fun thing about it is that the card will go through cliques very quickly - and then the players will have to find someone else who hasn't been fooled yet.

If you want, have people write their names on the back of the card when they get it, so you can keep a log of where it went.

You might also include "Please return to <your name here> at the end of the day".

I DEMAND A BIG, GAY COWBOY CARD.

THE OBJECT IS TO KEEP THE CARD, AND PUNCH ANYONE WHO GIVES YOU A PIRATE OR NINJA CARD.

I remember some version of this at a con I went to.

Except there, they used a creepy 400 lb guy in a cat suit instead of cards.

OH MY GOD, THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST GAMES EVER.
What program did you make these in? I will have to translate these into German, but absolutely have to do this game, SOON.

Also, is there any reason not to add "pirate/ninja quotes" that are memebombs? This game has the right qualities to give a good memebomb a piggyback ride.

This needs to happen.

It doesn't even need to be themed memes, IMO.

I agree. Just put a memebomb in quotes, attribute it to Captain Somethingorother, and slap it on there. For extra effect, use a small set of related memebombs for your set of cards.

Not enough people. And I think the NEG's patience is wearing thin with my recent psychopathic antics. People don't even respond to my posts on that board anymore unless it's sparkly and funny and actually involves Star Wars. Apparently my political rantings, emo bitching, and general silliness isn't cool.

ah crap, and i was going to surprise you by writing a generator for these kinds of images, srsly :) good thing i didn't get further yet than a few boxes in HTML :)

also, i had a friend staying over yesterday and as he was packing his stuff to leave, i quickly drew a pirate on a piece of cardboard and wrote the text next to it and slipped it into his carrier-bag.

today, on instant messaging, the following discussion took place:

(2008-10-09 18:15:07) Bo: Ben je een piraat?
(2008-10-09 18:15:19) Triplezero: ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Party was a bit of a dud but I made some cards, to be uploaded at a later date. Here's the text on one of them (only the "quote" and "source" are different on the other ones):
QuoteDu spielst jetzt PiratenRUMmy! Dein Ziel ist es, diese Karte loszuwerden.

Das geht so:

Yes, that's right, we called it Pirate RUMmy.

I ran some of these off last fall/winter, for an event at my school. Eventually, after getting passed around a lot the cards all got trashed as they landed in the hands of people who have too much of a stick up their ass to play along with a simple game. I need to try again with a group that will be more fun.

I just found this... :mittens: to you, Cram!

So here are some prettified business-card sized cards, in English and German.
If anyone needs A4-sized PDFs, I'll get them up later :)

In English:
Pirates -

Ninjas -

In German:
Pirates -
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=XYFSO4Y4
Ninjas -
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=OVAAUEJ4

All of them, in a .zip file -

Pirates in A4 -
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=OLG02MPW
Ninjas in A4 -
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=YO3UDKCM
German Ninjas in A4 -
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=4L3TY2YQ
German Pirates in A4 -
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=DJT62USZ

We've found it works well to stick the German on one side, and the English on the other. YMMV depending on location, of course.

I brought some Pirate Pass-Off cards to the Primus concert in Vancouver last night.

It was a huge success!  I wasn't sure how the cards would be perceived, but everyone seemed to love it.  I can't deny feeling a little surge of triumph as I was standing in the beer line, and seeing cards being passed around, and people trying to pass cards back to me later.

The funniest part was when people had already seen a card, but forgot the "answer" to "are you a pirate?"  There were a lot of people where the answer was, "YES, I AM!....or - wait.... no... ARRRRRRR!!"  Then I'd give them a ninja card.  :lulz:

One regret is that I didn't stick a link or something on them which would direct people here.  There were a lot of comments like, "this is awesome!"  "Where did you find out about this game?"  "Where can I find more stuff like this?"  I passed out a lot of cards, so at least anyone who was "stuck" with one at the end of the night can Google it and will inevitably be led here.  I also didn't see any crumpled up cards on the floor, which I actually kind of expected to see.

This game is a really excellent way to encourage interaction and communication between strangers.  I have a hard time approaching people, but this game allowed me to chat with a ton of people who I would have never spoken to otherwise.  And, it was just super fun.

Going to another concert in a few weeks.

Title: Re: Pirate Pass-Off: A Very Simple Game

I'll be passing these out again next Thursday at a much larger venue.

I'll add a URL this time, but I was also thinking I could hide some "buried treasure" within the card.  Last week I printed off the card on 4"x3" paper and taped it at the edges with double-sided tape to a slightly larger piece of heavy (and shiny!) card stock.  This leaves a space between the two pages, about the size of a business card.  I was thinking of leaving stuff in there; quotes, meme bombs, other random things.  You'd have to destroy the card to get to the treasure, but it wouldn't be obvious that something was in there unless someone really examined the card.

What do you think?  Too much messing with an already-good thing?
