Title: ITT, You recommend Coffeemakers
Post by: AFK on September 09, 2008, 01:41:21 PM
Yep.  Mine, that is, the one that was my wife's when we married, I believe was manufactured some time during the Reagan administration.  I wanna new one.  Any of you spags have any coffeemachines that you would rave about to someone?  Huh, well do you?

Not really. But my coffeemaker was about $20 from Linens 'n' Things and it has a programming function, so when I got out of the shower this morning, there was ALREADY COFFEE WAITING FOR ME.

Friggin' genius, man.

I like cheap and smart.

...I should date more grad students. :D

Coffeeholic here! But I don't like any filtered one. I have this Bodum glass coffee pots, where you put the coffee in, add hot water and just press down. Taste better, but you'll need an extra thermo, so probably too much work :D
I can only recommend a fully automatic coffee machine which grind the beans fresh and uses no paper fileter (my dream,. but too expensive right now).
But if you go for the caffeine and not the taste, it probably won't matter. Krupps and Braun are best ;)

I have a Braun that I've had for quite a few years.  You can program it.  It makes 14 cups. It's lasted over 11 years, I got it when I was pregnant with my youngest son and he'll be 12 in Oct.  Sooo, they last really well.  Of course it did replace my 20 something year old Mr. Coffee which is still working, my father dug it out because it is such a small pot.

We have the ginormous French press my husband likes and our newish coffeemaker that grinds the beans fresh before it swings the gold filter back over and makes the coffee for you.  All programmable too.  You can program how dark you want it, etc.

Made by Capresso.

I have been stopping there because my Mr. Coffee is just putting out bitter-tasting brown water.  I guess it needs to be cleaned or replaced?  I am not sure.  Takes less effort to stop at starbucks.

Plus, I don't have time in the morning to blend a coffee Frappuccino® with a shot of espresso, before taking the baby to daycare.

It also doesn't hurt that the hispanic barista who vends my caffeine is cute as a button.

It's just that Starbucks represents the devil is all.

I go almost every day to the local coffeeshop near my office, just because the lanky tattooed barista that makes my Americano is cute as hell, and totally knows me and my drink. And is always offering me an extra shot and/or a flavor shot. 8) And he's cute. Mmmm. A boy and a coffee. Makes my lunch break much better!

I want my coffee now but it is raining and I forgot my umbrella. I fail.

I love the smell of coffee, but for some reason my stomach does not really tolerate it.

So, we're stuck with our fancy Italian espresso-machine (which breaks down like, every month  :x), but I like espresso.
It's like a cup full of GOOD MORNING WOOOORLD!!!!!1, followed by explosions.

We registered for a Cuisenart 10-cup with a programmable timer.  Works well, and the pot is really well insulated; it has stayed hot even several hours after brewing.

French press is good, but I prefer cold-brewed coffee.

The cold-brewed process leaves you with a less acidic but concentrated coffee. Which is cool as hell because regular coffee irritates my stomach after the first cup.

It takes 12 hours to brew a batch, however, it keeps well and all you have to do to have "regular coffee" is add 1 part hot water and maybe a quick microwaving. But in the summer, I prefer to just add a little milk or ice cream and drink it cold and strong.

This is the only way to have iced coffee, by the way.

french press? i had to image-search to check if that was indeed the device you are talking about, are you all insane or or something?

not only is the coffee that comes out pretty mediocre in taste, IMO. but reading the wikipedia article on it, it should capture all the essential oils or whatever. it's hard to explain what i don't like about the flavour, coffee should have a thick quality, the french press somehow doesn't seem to do this. even though wikipedia says it feels thicker than drip-brew-paper-filter-machine-coffee, but then again, i have already postulated in another thread that you americans may have faulty drip-brew machines. then comes the flavour, i dunno, it has a kind of slight hint of cardboard-ish quality to it...?

so yeah maybe the people that made french press coffee for me were doing it wrong. all of them. in exactly the same way. i dunno.

maybe i just like my coffee slightly different. i usually don't like any of the coffee that's served from hyper expensive techno cyber future robot machines in coffeeshops either, yet the black stuff from some grubby old office drip-brew machine can be heaven to me. but even then, i don't get it, the "thickness" or perceived "oilyness" of coffee cannot be that subjective, can it?

i also explained (what i personally consider to be) the best  way to make coffee in this thread (http://www.principiadiscordia.com/forum/index.php?topic=15046.0). and the plastic filter tool thingy you need for it is only $2 or something.

for me the preferred order is that way, then drip-brew, and then french press.

also Net, i'm intrigued by cold brewing. does it work like i think it works, you just put some ground coffee in cold water and let it stand for 12 hours? i may try this.

Yep, it's that simple.

Oh man it's so good with ice cream.

"Toddy" kits are available, but it's not necessary. I use the toddy set up because I didn't buy it, however all that is really required is a large container that's easy to pour from, strong coarsely ground coffee and something to filter the grounds out.

Correction: you're supposed to dilute this stuff with 3 parts water to 1 part concentrate if you want "normal" strength coffee. The most I dilute it is usually 1:1.

Title: Re: ITT, You recommend Coffeemakers
Post by: Sepia on September 21, 2008, 12:50:57 AM
Ok.

A) French press. If you're getting one, get one like bodum columbia which will actually keep your coffee hot for more than 20 minutes. French presses can be annoying, atleast if you mainly make your coffee in the morning. You'll have to semi pay attention to the fact that you don't boil your water but take it at about 90 degrees. You should also have some semifresh oily coffee to go with it, colombia excelsio being my favourite as its fat and delicious. The french press will give you the best coffee at home unless you go for option B

B) http://tinyurl.com/4zhl8d
This one if manufactured by bodum but i've drunk my way through most of their models and their quality is quite shitty. There's probably other options of manufacture for this pot which will bring you to your knees and beg for more. The pain in the ass about this fucker is that you'll need a gas top, something that's hard to find in northern europe and it's annoying to work with but it still gives you the best coffee bar none.

C) The all classic bialetti. This is what I use when a lack of money forces me to work on the outside of my home and I have to brew something that will wake me up as I smoke my morning cigarettes. You get the bialetti in sizes ranging from 2 cups to 24 cups, these measured in the good oldfashioned standard of "mokka cups", twice the size of a standard single espresso. I have two different versions of the 8cup and one 24cup. The 8 cup will give you one of your weird measuring cups from over there (2.45 dl in the metric) of sweet sweet wakeup. The brewer of choice if only brewing for yourself.

I'm no barista and I like my coffee black without sugar but these are mainly the things I use. Or, what I'm saying is get a french press and a bialetti.

edit: Also because I sleep away most of my day I buy all my coffee at the grocer and my beans are seldomly fresh but after my favourite coffeeshop closed down last year it's okay. Vacuum packed works.

I use a Toddy coffee Maker. http://www.toddycafe.com/shop/product.php?productId=67.  It's a cold-brew system.  I brew a full pound at a time by steeping it in cold water over night, and drain the coffee concentrate it produces thru a filter into a carafe that I store in the fridge.  Low-acid, high flavor;  in fact, cold brewing brings out more flavor from the bean than traditional brewing.  In the mornings when I make my cuppa coffee it's as fast as instant and tastes excellent.

I know it's sort of a fringe method, but I like it:

Pour your hot water into a glass container with coffee grounds.  Let it steep.

Use a mesh strainer to get the coffee out.

What you get is this murky, scary sludge with silty residue on the bottom.
