I don't see Subgenuis as anything other than a parody religion. Discordianism is a little satirical in areas (albeit in a fond manner) and humor is a vehicle for conveying important ideas, like in Zen. Discordianism knocks Occultism and Religion but always strives to push past that. The principle of Greyface is at the heart of Discordianism I believe, it poses that the overemphasis on seriousness, both in religion/occultism and in general life - is the thing that perpetuates delusion, cult-behavior (which happens in the secular world too) and is ultimately a distraction. Of course, life is about balance between seriousness and humor, too much of either is a bad thing.
Discordianism has many hilarious inside jokes and in it's nature, feeds of memes. It provides a framework for absurdist anarchy, it provides guidelines of how to approach your own spirituality, it has it's own magical rituals and Mindfuck Orders. Robert Anton Wilson certainly saw this in Discordianism too and it shows in his approach to his own syncronistic adventures.
Even though Bob Wilson was also entertained by the Subgenius, I don't find much value in it outside of it's basic parody-value.

Hey Cramulus, have you explored Sufism much?

If so, what do you think of it compared to Gurdjieff's work? (as he is known to have been heavily inspired by it). I'm a Sufi Muslim (highly heretical mind you) myself, aside from being part Discordian, so this is an area of constant learning. I definitely like Gurdjieff a lot anyway.

I've only dipped my toe in it - listened to a lecture about it in college, and read a handful of little articles and perspectives - yeah, there's a lot of shared ground. I would love a reccommendation for something short length to read about it.

Those dances tho! Spiraling closer and closer to the center... so cool. I understand that there are sufi practices that steer the practitioner into an ecstatic trance. I wonder how much common ground there is with the Gurdjieff Movements.

The dancing is only really found in certain Sufi Orders but yes, that in particular was a direct influence on Gurdjieff's Movements.
Sufism is a very broad subject of Islamic mysticism going from pure mystical theology/cosmology/astrology/kabbalah to magic/sorcery (Djinn seems to be the focus in much of it, despite being a largely unexplored area when it comes to translation  ) to 'shamanistic' practices (hallucinogens). We read the Quran with much more nuanced lens that mainstream Muslim sects, the Quran itself refers to Allah (in many various places) as being an outer force, inner force and even a method of attainment (which evokes Shaivism a little and Hadit in Thelema)

Yeah, seeing your ongoing interest in Gurdjieff (as I also do myself, having already previously attested to) it was a question I couldn't help but ask

I just read your preview? of the first episode/part of your Buddhafart series (came across it by accident actually and not on this forum either )

It's bloody hilarious and quite an intense Discordian/Illuminatus-ish self-aware cosmic adventure. You've integrated Discordianism, Thelema, Christianity and various other religious/spiritual aspects in a highly bizzare and surreal adventure. I really enjoyed it. 
Also I see there is a book publication of the comic, is the whole thing?
