Title: The Good Book
Post by: Kaienne on July 15, 2007, 09:45:03 AM
So, one of these days, a decade or two from now, I'm gonna open up a pure, unadulturated channel to the divine, and tirelessly carve out a tome like Moses carving out the Ten Commandments. The tome will contain the answers to life, the universe, and everything. All shall be revealed, simple enough for the lamen to understand the basics of it, and concise enough that with steady research, anyone can understand all the secrets of the universe. It will change the entire world.

I will title this book '42'.

Does this mean that, hypothetically speaking, if someone were to gun you down (or, say, grind you up with pee stained dentures) before you wrote it, they would also be changing the world by ensuring that you never write this book?

Douglas Adams on 42: "The answer to this is very simple. It was a joke. It had to be a number, an ordinary, smallish number, and I chose that one. Binary representations, base thirteen, Tibetan monks are all complete nonsense. I sat at my desk, stared into the garden and thought '42 will do.' I typed it out. End of story."

Right now I'm considering doing that to Chris Angel.

Until then, I'll make fun of the fact that you think you're special.

hey

i dunno about the others, but i only flame when faced with someone who seems oblivious to any sort of regular critique.

does that make me a grumpy old fart whose posts you advise people not to worry about?

Dunno... why do you feel the need to flame someone who is oblivious to your critique? Does your opinion seem that important to you? More interestingly, why should your critique be considered useful by someone else? Hell, you're a pseudonym on a Discordian message board, why would anyone consider a critique from such a source to be useful?

Do you believe that Kaienne is wrong? Do you believe that you have the true information to correct him/her/it? So what if she/he/it (still haven't quite figured it out) has only started to scratch the surface of ideas many of us have already prodded? When I first became a Discordian, I was excited about pineal glands and 42 and 23 and 5, then I learned (through my own research, not through the lame flames of other Discordians) what seems to be the key behind some of those ideas.

Who the hell cares if Kaienne thinks that (what is the contraction for She/He/It...) she-he-it will write a book called 42 and it will contain THE secrets of Life? Does that make your life less interesting for you (if so, I wonder who really has the problem)? Good Flames rarely improve the behavior of anyone, they rarely see a different concept or have their perceptions modified by it, and honestly, what's been posted here, seems to me, pathetic excuses for "flames" .  I mean the lack of creativity, the the repetitious manner of the content... its enough to make the baby Eris cry a little bit.

Sometimes flames can be appropriate. I think the thread "BIP - Just Call Me Nigger To My Face" fits the bill quite nicely. The idiot tried to force his lame ideas on us, and he got what he deserved. Kaienne just posted a dumb idea that many of us have heard before (along with the dumb "Ideal Discordian" and "DMT is IN YOU"! stuff). However, that's the same sort of thing  many Discordians have gone through... to flame someone for being at the beginning of the path seems rather pathetic to me.

So many here seem to have an aversion to the memes of Discordianism. Not just adverse, but downright hostile. I love the trappings of classic Discordianism. They're tribal memes and I'm proud to be part of that tribe of philosophers and madmen. That doesn't mean that I MUST use them, or that I think they hold the secrets to the universe (in a specific sense), but I sure as hell don't mind the kids in the tribe getting excited. I feel no more animosity toward Kaienne, than I do toward the little kid that thinks Santa is real. They'll both learn in their own time.

Since I started hanging out here, I've noticed this tendency for flamefests to appear whenever some poor n00b hits one of the old Standards. I have to wonder how much people may see themselves and if self-loathing might be behind such a reaction.

So yes, flames about how lame someone is for using the Discordian tribal memes, seems to me an indicator that someone has grown old and crotchety as a Discordian. An almost Scrooge or Grinch-like reaction to the wonder and innocence of the youth of our Tribe... or not, your mileage may vary and past performance is not indicative of future results. This post is Void where prohibited.

Who the fuck is that?
Title: Re: The Good Book
Post by: Darth Cupcake on July 20, 2007, 07:35:28 PM
I just want my damn question answered.

WHY title it 42?

I have no problem with people using memes of Discordianism now and again, because we all fall prey sometimes. However, if this is supposed to be some incredibly significant and ground-breaking book that has All The Answers (which first off, claiming to have them is pretty pretentious) and yet the best possible title is something that has already be done... That's a pretty shitty start. Think for yourself. Isn't that one of the important parts of Discordianism? Don't just keep spitting out whatever pop culture feeds you?

So if Kaienne will ever answer WHY the book must be named 42, then I will make my decision.

However, no argument has been made that it is anything other than regurgitation of something already done. And if that's all it is, why bother saying this book is going to be written? Douglas Adams already wrote it.

Yeah, I think there's a lot of crotchety and the suchlike on this board. You're certainly not the first to observe it. It just so happens that this board has collected many of the jerks of Discordia. Every sub-group of a group will have a flavor, and that's the flavor, for the most part (certainly not universally) of this particular group.

Well, I assumed that Kaienne wasn't being entirely serious about the thing and was just making an attempt at a DA reference. I don't think SheHeIt really believes that 42 IS the actual answer.

I see the n00b's 42,23,5,etc meme references as someone attempting to speak the language of our tribe and I welcome it. I want people in my tribe to share some experiences, ideas and memes. They don't need to match or even agree... but there's something to be said for a semblance of tribal identity.

Besides, thinking for yourself doesn't mean that everything you say must be completely original and unique (cause that isn't gonna happen for any of us). Thinking for yourself, can simply be considering all the options before choosing one. That is, I could choose to write some piece of poetry to end this with, or I could select one that I think particularly fitting, which may reference our tribal memes and perhaps give someone pause for thought. I will choose which to do and thus Think for Myself.

And when men become free then mankind will be free.
May you be free of The Curse of Greyface.
May the Goddess put twinkles in your eyes.
May you have the knowledge of a sage,
and the wisdom of a child.
Hail Eris.

Tribal memes work, as a way of identifying each other/forming a first initial bond.

However, everyone needs to move past that. That is simply surface, if you will. That is, the impression I get, somewhat the purpose of the 50 post rule. Do your thing, but then move past it. Get on to other things, things that are of more significance than just gestures and generic symbols. One thing I tend to dislike about so many other social groups/religions/what-have-you is the clinging to and being into the ground of symbols, whereas we tend to avoid that, or at least attempt to avoid that, here.

I think I have more to say, but the office phone keeps ringing and I keep having to answer it, so my train of thought keeps getting derailed. Sorry!

Is the problem (with these other social groups) a dogmatic stance on the memes, or is it the fact that they have a dogmatic stance?

One might be as dogmatically against a set of memes, as for the same set, perhaps?

Why  does everyone need to move past the PD? Is there some great and important truth to be laid on us all? Have any of us truly figured out what's going on? Are we now to be shepherds of a flock, defining what is and isn't acceptable when "thinking for oneself"?

It's metaphorical, I think. The response by sombunal members of this cabal when a n00b wanders in excited by fnords and 23's and flax, seems very similar to those jaded professors that see every new student as just another wide eyed fool, who will grow up and get it someday. Or the old and crotchety folk who curse at the kids for their loud music and their stupid clothes... forgetting that swing and zoot suits were once seen the same way.

You choose how to act, and I'll choose how to interpret what I perceive. Just as with everything else, I might be wrong. Maybe we shouldn't let people play in Discordianism. Maybe we should Demand that they immediately cast off what they just found.

Hating a class of memes, loving a class of memes or playing with classes of memes... we all get to choose.

Kaienne opened this thread with a summary of a book she wishes to produce ending with the proposed title.  Since this was proposed on a discussion board, the implication is that she was looking for subsequent discussion concerning her idea.

Discussion ensued.  Many thought the title of the book was cliche, which I find to be a valid criticism.

I don't think it really has all that much to do with what brand of Discordianism we want everyone to practice, or any other idea like that.  It was simple criticism.  Sure, maybe it was a bit ascerbic, but, since when is that new around here?

DING! You get the Kewpie Doll!!!

If the PD has a point, it seems that point exists in the mind of the reader. I got lots of points out of the book and not one of them was "Get past the PD".

For me (and my reality tunnel) the PD has provided me with many points. I think Nonsense As Salvation may sum up a core tenant of what Greg, Kerry and the rest of those nutballs were trying to communicate. Order, Disorder, Chaos, Constancy, Discord and Harmony... all places to play. All things to experience. All ways to impose a grid on reality.

Sometimes I think people try so hard to Think For Themselves that they form robotic responses... when thats within a tribe it may quickly become dogma. But, maybe I'm wrong.

I don't disagree. Personally, I think that most Discordians eventually give up or figure out the first level of the punchline. The longer someone holds to the Discordian paths, the more bits of the punchline they seem to get. Sometimes though, some Discordians get to the first or second level of the punchline and think they've figured it all out. Sometimes Discordians seem to think that they've figured something out and they try to tell the punchline to all the n00bs that haven't even got to the end of the joke yet.

There are many kinds of professors. Some as I said, jaded and serious, without any empathy for the student who is excited over the possibilities of Quantum Physics and slit experiments. Others enjoy the naivety of the student and their excitement, often rekindling their own excitement over something that they see everyday. My mentor was like that and I have chosen to act in a similar fashion about Discordianism.

Neither professor is necessarily right or wrong. But, some are old and crotchety.

I suppose it depends on how easily you can swap models. I like to play in the Erisian model, switch to the more philosophical Discordian model, jump into the Sub Genius model for a good devival and then hop out of all of those and pull of some serious Chaos Magic, or design a new system at the office. Getting stuck in only one of those models seems anathema not only to the PD (and some of the philosophies of Bob's that I like), but anathema to the choices I've made since escaping restrictive reality tunnels.

Like what you like, Enjoy what you enjoy... and so will I ;-)

"Don't worry newbie, our conversations are a bit ascerbic at times"

I said, "Don't worry, some of the old farts around here get grumpy when they haven't had a fnordling to chew on for awhile."

hey

i dunno about the others, but i only flame when faced with someone who seems oblivious to any sort of regular critique.

does that make me a grumpy old fart whose posts you advise people not to worry about?

Dunno... why do you feel the need to flame someone who is oblivious to your critique?

I'm just a big fan of Douglas Adams, I have been for several years now. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy says that the answer to life, the universe, and everything is 42. Therefore, were I to write a book that answered life, the universe, and everything, logically the only title truly fitting would be '42'.

As for the 'DMT is IN YOU' meme, I've been tracking that for way the fuck longer than since when I found out about Discordianism. All of the memes I'm really big on, they're all things I was already into long before I found out about Discordianism; the fact that quirky little things I enjoyed were supposed mainstays of the religion was one of it's calling points for me. I'm sorry to hear that you folk are burnt out from overexposure, but fuck you, I'm not.

Also I typically go by 'zhe'.

I'm pretty sure this has been stated before (and I totally missed it/don't remember anything) but...why "zhe"?

'Cos I'm an androgyne, and zhe (also; zhir) is a nice, gender-neutral pronoun, and one that sounds aesthetically pleasing to me.

Okay.

How exactly can one be androgynous? Is it a matter of personality or biology (biology beyond the brain, that is)?

Sorry if that's too prying, I'm just curious.

When complete strangers stop in the middle of the street to ask, "Are you a boy or a girl?", that's how one can be androgynous.

The low dose of hormones helps, too.

While I completely respect anyone's right to live and act as whichever gender they see fit (even ones that haven't been invented yet), I don't think it's reasonable to expect other people to change their lingustic framework over it, especially to the point of using a word that doesn't exist.

If I saw someone fucking with you on the street because you live outside western society's gender norms, I'd have your back, but I'll still call you either "he" or "she" while I'm doing so.

i was just about to say the same thing.

also, i really was under the impression you preferred to be called "she", and i was trying to respect that, but apparently i didn't pick it up when it was discussed in the genderfuckery thread.

sorry, i don't want to have any of this "i'm having my own pronoun" shit. what does "zhe" and "zhir" mean anyway? are they based on english words?

what's the point if you're still having two of them?

and seriously what the fuck do you think you're doing to the language?? maybe it's because i'm dutch and my language is still using gendered and ungendered words, maybe also because i know some german, which is very hard because of all the male/female/ungendered words there.
would you really want to be refered to as "das Kaienne" in german? or do you want an extra rule for that as well? how about two of them? any idea what effect that's gonna have on declension tables and other such linguistic tricksiness?

you may not think that's a big deal, but asking me to add a new pronoun to my languages, kinda, for me. if it's really that important to you, you're gonna have to do a littlebit better than "typically i go by zhe".

hey i asked some serious questions here.

so you won't give a shit about anybody who doesn't want to play your language games?

can't you understand this is a tough thing to do?

you're asking people to change their language, in order to gain your respect (or something)

also, doesn't english already have a genderless pronoun?
but that one doesn't sound "nice" enough for you? doesn't that make this whole game attention whoring?

or if "it" makes you feel like being compared to an inanimate object, isn't that your linguistic hangup with the language? couldn't you change your perception of the word "it" (or better even, change your perception of "he" and "she") instead of requiring everyone around you to reroute their linguistics specifically for you?

also, telling me i don't matter because i ask you to explain yourself is a bit weak, imo.

Hard feelings are, of course, allowed, but it's really only a word, after all.

I will call you by whatever word I feel is appropriate at the time, not whatever word YOU think is appropriate.

And that is directed at both Trip0 and Kai, and also those of you who debate the use of E-prime.

Telling people they got to bend way for you and all kind of shit like that is stupid. I'll take he or she or even Hey YUO! but I will never ask someone to use a specific pronoun when reffering to me, and if someone asked which one I preffered, I might tell them, but more likely I would just say "which ever one is easier". This inferiority complex sorta behavior reminds me too much of those Harry Benjamin Syndrome people I learned about yesterday and all their slurs against transgenders and nazi words. If there is one thing being transgendered should teach a person, its understanding, and common curtesy. Expecting people to use pronouns that you are comfortable with is not curteous nor understanding. And it DOES reflect badly on the rest of us.

There are lots of people who don't matter to me. I'm sure there are people who don't matter to you, either. It's all a matter of opinion. Mind you, a truer statement would have been I actually give two shits about at least recognize my neutrality.

do you actively seek out new ways to make yourself seem somehow edgy or unique, or do you collect them like stds?

So how old are you really? 14? 15? cause if you are 21 then lol.

Nah, I just kind of pick them up as I go.

There's a difference between basic respect and outrageous demands. In other words, its pronouns were talking about. People don't matter because of PRONOUNS?

You are ridiculous.

This I will agree to.

It's not the words themselves but the reason people don't say them. If I say "I like zhe", and someone says to me "fuck you, I'm not changing my vocabulary for you", my natural response is "fuck you too".
In an instance where I tell someone and they say okay, but forget, I've got no qualms.

i thought that according to HHGG the answer was continued existence?(hint: its in the actions of the computer, not in its words)

aye. somebody didn't pay attention. "42" is the answer to an unknown question, not the question posed to Deep Thought, because that question was naive and incomplete.

Well, too late now.  World ended, book not done.

just sayin

It doesn't have to be a Adams reference. 42 is also the number of volumes in the legendary Book of Thoth
