Title: Be outraged. Or confused, anyway.
Post by: Jasper on July 27, 2010, 09:54:46 PM
I found myself experiencing an odd mixture of the two.

Huh. Non-autistic people have autistic kids all the time, so why would they assume the dude is autistic, or, if he is, that he knows he is?

Dunno, I just felt very strange when I read about people sneaking supposedly unwanted genes into the sperm banks.  Like I want to laugh, but doing so might break something important.

Well, it goes back to the whole "utopian genotype" thing that makes Xtians so afraid of testtube babies and gene therapy in the first place.  You know, the "God made it so it's not broke" whole theory about the cruelties of existence?  I say 'cruelty' lightly, here, because really, there are too many flaws in all of us to really quantify or qualify them concretely or fairly.  But the fact we all yearn for so-called perfection means there's a societal standard that will really never exist, but in our sci-fi wetdreams.

This guy turned that shit on its ear.  That makes me go "hm."

I've said it jokingly before, but I'm wondering now.  Is our society at large just concerned with building a better asshole?

Not sure...define "better" + "asshole"?

Not really sure what that means myself, I was tired.

I just can't seem to think of appropriate commentary about a blog that encourages genetic vandalism. :lulz:

My husband likes the theory that psychotics that "hear voices" actually use more of their brains/have access to another plane of reality than those who don't.

That's an attractive thought, but I wonder how that explains the devastating loss of cognitive functionality in schizophrenics.

Some seem to have heightened ability in certain areas, but diminished ability in others.  The strongly autistic however are, like schizophrenics, not profiting from their condition in any significant way.  That's textbook stuff I've learned supported by firsthand experience, so I'm not just talking out my bum here.

  Yeah, I don't like to mean the good doctor believes it, but he still LIKES the notion.  Because it's more attractive than thinking they're broken, I guess.

They're not broken, just ill.  And lots of autistic (and some schizophrenic) people make contributions to society.  It's not that they're a total loss across the board, they just tend to have a lot of difficulty.  Some more than others.

Well, and some "breaks" are smaller than others.

At putting forks in electrical outlets?

There was some term for that..."Indigo Children".  Some hippie shit, about how all the Autistic kids were going to suddenly become telepathic and fix everything, etc, etc.

Yeah, it's really striking how much variability the condition has.  I've been thinking about schizophrenia since I was in my sophomore year of high school, and that was always the thing that stuck out to me.

The thing is, in this society you need to have a combination of book smarts and street smarts.  IQ and EQ, or for that matter an SQ.  S standing for Social.  I'm thinking of a guy like Stephen Hawking who is insanely brilliant, but clearly also has a pretty good sense of humor and social graces.  An intellectually brilliant person may be "superior" in that category of intellect, but much more than intellect is required to survive and excel in this society.  I know plenty of brilliant people who got nowhere and conversely not-as-brilliant people who've been very successful.

I couldn't agree with this more.  The more "balanced" people tend to do the best.

Indigo Children aren't necessarily Autistic... I think they tend more toward ADHD and maybe Ass Burgers (which I guess is getting re-categorized as Autism lite... so...) but mostly, they have to have Indigo Auras... you can't judge just based on their mental state... you gotta check the Aura!!

'Tosk, Asperger's isn't "autism lite".  It's mild autism.  Think of it as a point on a spectrum.  Actually, psychology refers to the "autism spectrum" by name, so...

Just tweezing.  Don't mind me.

Indigos are ADHD.  We now have "Crystal Children" to cover autistic types.

The idea is that Indigos are some kind of cosmic warrior / revolutionary breed meant to make shit vibrate at a higher frequency overturn the old institutions and replace them with enlightened new ones more in touch with the spiritual side.  Which is why they have so many problems in school - their cosmic purpose is to destroy bureaucratic restraints on our space souls or something.

Crystal children are the ordinary citizens to the Indigo children's warrior vanguard.  They're just supposed to inhabit the new world utopia, with their super-sensitive autistic spiritual powers.  The reason they have so much trouble interacting with the world is that the Indigo Children didn't fix it fast enough and they have to live in our crappy, spiritually-tone deaf world, not because there's anything wrong with them.

Mild autism isn't quite right.  One of the core features of autism is the delay, impairment (or in severe cases total lack) of language and verbal abilities.  Asperger's is like autism (social deficiencies and stereotyped, repetitive behaviors) but without the language delay.  Mild autism would have a less severe language delay or impairment, Asperger's lacks it completely.

I was diagnosed with Assburger's, and I have a stutter and brain-to-word impediments. So..yeah, it's not language DELAY, but it is what it is.

Not all people on the autism spectrum have a low EQ, lack in social graces or sense of humor. Some can even do puns.

Bazinga.

But whoever claims they are "superior" probably watched too much kung fu movies with blind samurai being all superior because of their heightened hearing and sensing and shit.

Erm... Autism doesn't exactly pass on with high frequency unless both parents have it either (I didn't quite understand everything the Autism specialist I asked about this said, something about the inheritance patterns being consistent with multiple chromosomes, but the gist of it was that I had no significant risk of passing it on unless my partner has it or has multiple cases in the family history).
