I didn't know JWs didn't believe in hell.  Or if I did, I forgot.  Which is odd, because one of my best friends at school, and a girl I had a MAJOR crush on were both JWs, and so I know loads of useless trivia about the religion.

Now I'm worried what else I've forgotten.

Toy Story 3 may be OK, but really, the fact so many sequels and remakes and comic books are coming out yet again just shows no-one in Hollywood is prepared to take any sort of risk at all, or even remembers how to write an original script.   I mean, seriously, I understand the same tropes and themes will be prevalent to most films of similar genres, but come on.  

Incidentally, Iron Man 1 was mostly so awesome because half the time a script wasn't even being used, and they just made it up as they went along.

Interestingly enough, cancelling debts is what Athens' greatest ruler did, to overcome their financial crisis.  Most of the land and wealth in Athens belong to the aristocratic Eupatridae, who often exercised these powers in order to bankrupt farmers and small businessmen, so they could buy up their land and make them work on it as serfs or slaves.  In Athens, a serf or slave was no longer a citizen, without a vote or voice.  The whole situation spun massively out of control, with a huge economic gap between the Eupatridae and the poor, and revolution was not out of the question.  To solve matters, Solon was bought into office, where he immediately cancelled all debts, released most from their slavery, redistributed farm land and then went on to write the Athenian Constitution, replacing Draco's Code (where our word draconian comes from) and creating the precursor to modern democracy.

According to the BBC, she was denied tenure by the department.  So wiping the whole department out makes sense, as a thesis.  I've read about the tenure process in the US and it sounds absolutely hellish (we don't do it over here).  Given how many years it takes just to be considered for it, I can understand being pissed off at being denied it and wanting to whack someone.  Of course, wanting to and actually doing it are two distinct things, and should not be confused.

Again, I am going to recommend Going Postal by Mark Ames.  I'm surprised he hasn't already got an article out on this.

That 1986 incident is very odd.  Expect the conspiratards to be all over that, if they're not already.

As for the current shooting, it'll be interesting to see what relationships she had with her victims.  The Head of Department suggests there may have been work related problems, but associate and assistant professors are pretty low down on the food chain, so unless something else was going on, them being targeted doesn't make sense.  Unless I'm reading this all wrong and it wasn't a work related shooting but a psychotic break, in which case all of the above should be disregarded.

I always thought it was British, I know the Daily Mail prints it.  And it is clearly the most pointless cartoon strip ever.  It has a Zen-like detachment from any sort of meaning or significance or humour at all.
