Listen up, douchbebag:  Just because a group of people tend to look at the darker/funnier sort of things doesn't mean they're doom and gloom all the time.  You're the one who's always telling everyone that the internet is a shitty way to know someone, yet you're the one who's always telling us what we REALLY think.

Well, I'll give you this one for free:  You're an asshole.

Gee, talk about assuming and profiling humanity in a retardedly simplistic manner... also, god forbid we have imagination to see beyond what "is" and into "what is possible"... "things we hate = things we aspire"  :lulz: :lulz: :lulz: so sorry for not being a free market randite!!!...

So everything falls in line with your discourse trends Mr. RWHN, a mindless apologist of current laws (without any sense of the meaning behind them) and the status quo, an apologist to the hoarding plutocrats and a "happy" shit-grin to top it off.

WELL! That's a load off my mind, for sure!

You hear that? We've arrived! The world now features 100% more unicorns shitting rainbows all over everything!

Such a relief. I guess I can stop worrying about stuff now. Good to know we've beaten poverty, disease, injustice, starvation, war, famine, inequality, ignorance, violence, racism, sexism, and totalitarianism. Guess we can all just go back to sleep. Hell, we even have flying cars now, so I guess that's it. Call it a wrap! The future is here, and it's better than you ever thought it would be!

Actually, there's got to be something that still plagues humanity. I mean, the world can't be PERFECT yet, can it? But if it's none of the above, I just don't know what it could be. What, out of all the things that have terrorized humanity and ruined lives for our entire existence, is still left to fight off? With everything worth fighting already vanquished, whatever will we fill our prisons with? What do we need SWAT teams for? We can't just disband them. Surely there must be SOMETHING to use all that stuff for. Maybe RWHN knows.

Why you think the world is better than it really is:

http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1540-4560.1975.tb00997.x/abstract (http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1540-4560.1975.tb00997.x/abstract)

He probably won't read it.

It's only an abstract.  Someone post up the full article and I'll read it.

On the right side of the screen it says, Article Tools: Get PDF.

Have you never gotten an article before?

Yes I have assface, when I click on this it says I need to buy it.  Again, it's only an abstract.

Someone's drunk and belligerent.

There is no alcohol in seltzer idiot.

Oh, I know.  I just don't believe what you're drinking is seltzer.  Frankly, I think you're a drunk.

Orange Vanilla Seltzer straight up.  It is delicious.

Maybe you should have clicked the PDF link before you assumed.

Maybe I should have. Maybe you should also acknowledge when someone admits that they were wrong about something.

Uh, we're kind of past that point.  About where you made multiple posts in AI about deciding to be openly hostile towards me.  So, you can, you know, pound sand.

To be fair, I may be able to legally acquire it. If I had my previous position, I might be able to acquire it right now, but as it stands, I would have to physically go to the library at work and scan it. Though I doubt he would read it anyway, especially if I specifically went out of my way to scan it.

I'm assuming that he would have similar if not better access than me, since he works in a hospital. May even have that nifty online access. Seems like Journal of Social Issues would be on the list of subscriptions where he works. But, hell, we all know my recent track record with making assumptions about RWHN's personal life.

Ugh, I read that expecting it to be funny and unfortunately, it was unfunny, misguided, and factually incorrect. :(

Debunk it then.  Seems pretty spot on to me.  And I thought it was pretty funny, and inspiring at the same time.

I thought it was possibly the best, which is a considerable feat given that pretty much everything they produce is gold.

When John Resig, co-owner of TheCHIVE.com, asked readers to help raise $30,000 so an Iraq War vet and quadruple amputee could build his dream log cabin in the woods, they instead raised $250,000, which funded that cabin and helped him meet the president and get fitted with prosthetic limbs.

My ex did something really similar; got engaged not long after the divorce, just a few months after starting to date someone. It didn't work out and it put a ton of stress on the kids, which of course he refused to see.

The parenting class Oregon makes you take when you get a divorce here tells you specifically not to do that and to just give it a couple of years before bringing home a replacement spouse, for the sake of the kids, but of course he thought he was special.

That's probably why 2nd, 3rd, and 4th marriages have a progressively higher divorce rate.

Which of course is what's screwing up the stats to say 50% of all marriages end in divorce.

Funny, because you'd think that most people would come out of a divorce thinking "Boy, I sure don't want to do that again!". Not that every divorce is a trainwreck, but even if it's amicable, it isn't something most people are looking forward to on their wedding day. But no, "Must erase the past! This new person that I have spent a few months with is so much better than my last memories of my ex! This must mean we are destined to be together!" It is easy to get caught up in new feelings and feel like you've found your soul mate. And sure, sometimes it does work out, but usually a few months isn't enough time to get to know someone to the extent you can tell if you will be compatible for life. My boss had a client recently that was on his 2nd or third divorce - and he was about the same age or barely older than me.

Also, apparently RWHN believes that age brings an immunity to making mistakes or getting caught up in the whirlwind of a new romance. No-one over the age of 30 makes mistakes ever! I would think that age would bring the knowledge/wisdom that the early stages of romance produce a huge endorphin rush that may seem like you were meant to be together forever, but that things can change as you get to know someone longer/spend more time around them. And, probably more important, as Nigel mentioned, the effects that bringing "replacement Mommy" into a home so soon can have on the children. But RWHN never really cared about The Children anyway

Yes, of course, getting engaged now is actually not the same as getting engaged now, because the wedding is in the future, and that means that the engagement is actually in the future too

Makes perfect sense

if you're RWHN.

Yeah. I would think that having kids would make you even more cautious to do so. What happens if there's a second divorce, and they've gotten attached to her (and stepdad on the other side for that matter, in the even XWHN is doing the same thing).

It's not my place to judge and I have nothing against making commitments early on, it's just that it's usually not encouraged very soon after a divorce when there are kids involved because it can be so stressful on them.

Which is why I regularly talk to and check in with my kids.  Daily.  Which is why I am talking to my child development partners.  Why I had my daughter's guidance counselor and teacher regularly check in with her and report back to me.  Why the wedding won't be for another year so my daughter can complete her full upcoming school year.  Why I have the daycare staff keeping tabs on my son and making me aware of any potential stress or developmental impacts.

My job makes awareness and understanding of child development a necessity.  I know all too well what stress can do to a kid.  I know what I am doing.

Yeah and thats why yer man-o is probably making a mistake. Even if it does end up lasting for the duration of their lives hes not going into this with a clear head and his head might still not be clear a year from now. Being in recently love as far as ive heard is indistinguishable from being insane. Well. Its his mistake to repeat.

BF and I have already discussed that the only reason why we would ever get married is so that I can have good health benefits if the job I eventually get does not provide. Neither of us see any real reason for marriage, after having both been married previously. Hell, we aren't even sure if we're going to survive his upcoming billet or future deployments. Everything is just far too dynamic.

Well as far as the remarriage bit it is out of genuine concern.
I might have my beefs with the guy but that doesnt mean he isnt a human being who deserves to be happy and that he and his fiancee would benefit from waiting to declare their intentions.

I appreciate the concern.  Sorry for calling you "assface" and for being belligerent with you.

It would be completely arbitrary and academic to wait a certain number of months to propose.  That is just an arbitrary life-game that doesn't consider individual situations.  In addition I would point out that I waited for almost two years before proposing to ex-Mrs WHN and look how that turned out.

Nothing is going to be different a year from now so, for me, it seems silly to wait a year just because that's what everyone else does.

Why should I delay?

She and I are both knocking on 40.  We have both experienced a LOT of life.  We are both pretty clear on what we want in a mate, and luckily works out that we have fit the bill pretty well for each other.

So what am I waiting for other than a predetermined socially accepted amount of time?

How long have you been dating?

How long have you been divorced?

Are you already living together? If not, how do you know she will be someone you can share personal space with? Sleeping over houses is not sharing space. It's a sleepover. How do you know she doesn't do that thing with the toothpaste tube or some other pet peeve?

Or MAYBE CLAIMS TO HAVE AN ALLERGY TO DOING FUCKING DISHES AND LEAVES A NASTY ASS KITCHEN AFTER THEY COOK?!

Both questions are irrelevant.  Our relationship is our relationship.  It will be dictated by us, not social conventions.  Numbers are just numbers.  We are two very open people with very open books.  We've seen the nastiest aspects of each others' past lives.  We've seen up close and personal each others' faults and less-than-desirable traits.  And we love each other more with each passing day.

QuoteAre you already living together? If not, how do you know she will be someone you can share personal space with? Sleeping over houses is not sharing space. It's a sleepover. How do you know she doesn't do that thing with the toothpaste tube or some other pet peeve?

I don't get hung up on stupid shit like toothpaste tubes and the like.  We've spent considerable time in each others' homes and lives.  There really are no secrets at this point, as far as how we each run our homes, and they are pretty similar really.  What differences exist are pretty easily negotiable.  Life is kinda short to worry about that stuff really.

Actually, you know what? No.

As previously mentioned, I don't think anyone here actually hates you. We're openly criticizing your choices with your best interests in mind. How much shit did PD give me during my post-divorce insanity? The shitty boyfriends I had...the lessons I had to fucking learn with that. Did I want to hear it then? FUCK NO. I wanted my happy, but with that pretend happy came a world of shit. I wasn't ready, and the board saw it. This resulted in me having tearful phone calls with Roger, and pouring all my emotional bullshit in person on Richter and Luna, because I chose to ignore the warning signs people were giving me.

Sure, relying on an internet message board for relationship advice may be fucked up, but if anything, we have a mixed bag of varied experiences here. You already had your heart ripped out once, and we feel like you're setting yourself up to do it again.

You're not going to want to read this, in fact, you'll probably ignore this or just tell me "thanks, but no thanks" and that's fine, but don't be surprised at the "I told you so's" that may come in the future.

See, though, the difference here is that the advice y'all are giving me is based solely on arbitrary numbers based in arbitrary social conventions.  In fact I didn't have my "heart ripped out" when my previous marriage ended.  Did I have a period of angst and negative feelings?  Absolutely, at the dissolution of the family.  But I had known, really, for years that my marriage was a bit of a sham.  We had Little WHN 9 months after the wedding.  (you do the math).  Our entire married life revolved around being parents.  Along the way, there were many clues that the romantic aspect of that marriage kind of died early on in the marriage.  Romantically, we were on different pages and wanted different things.  She is much more casual in relationships.  I am a hardcore romantic.  Her getting fired and having a mid-life crisis when she turned 36 just served to be the last straw and finally blew it up.  So when we officially separated a year ago, it was done.  I mean, done, done.  The divorce was an academic, legal exercise.

I was 12 years younger, in only my late 20s when I had made that decision to propose and marry ex WHN.  12 years later, two kids later, a new career later....at 38, I know pretty well what I want in life, and who I want travelling with me down those different paths.  Her resume is pretty much perfect.  The vetting on either side has been pretty comprehensive.

I'm sorry but your experiences are your experiences, and not appropriate for comparing to mine, or anyone else's for that matter.  Numbers are just numbers.  I would hope this to be a concept understandable by Discordians.

This Discordian sees the multiple paths available, and with a very clear heart and mind, is taking this one without an ounce of hesitation.

Well it was an inaccurate comparison. My cheeks arent that robust and my mouth is more akin to a sideways vulva what with the general shape and beard. But whatever man is all good.
I think your mindnumbingly wrong on a few things sure. One of which is that you think that sooner is no different than later. But the damage is done even if you agreed with what suu pent and i are saying. But i would delay the wedding another six months or so if you can manage it.
Weddings seem all romantic and stuff but really theyre expensive rituals attached to essentially signing a contract. You dont need to marry your chick in order to have a satisfying relationship or even to fertilize those last few eggs if thats what you want. Never hurts to wait unless one of you is terminally ill.
Anyway now that im not an assface did you watch that video?

I have been married before so trust me I'm pretty aware of the expense and everything that goes with it.  We both have pretty small circles of people so it won't be a big affair.

The wedding will be next year sometime.  We've ruled out summer because we both hate summer.  Maybe next Spring, more early next Fall.

This isn't about "need" at all.  We both value marriage, obviously not out of any religious aspect, but as (for us) an important symbolic, and ceremonial way to convey and celebrate our committment to each other.  Marriage isn't for everyone, but it is for us.

Serious business happened with the NSA today in a strange case involving wired ducks.

I would be interested in that.  There is no reason the article can't actually be discussed.

No thanks. I'm not a sucker.

I was actually looking forward to discussing the OP article as well, but now i've spent almost an hour reading up on a strangers fictional love life. If i wanted to do that, i'd get into twilight.  :argh!:

Actually fuck it, here goes. I liked how the article pointed out a perceptual bias towards focusing on the negative aspects of things. Human history has been one long struggle to make things less shitty for the next generation and no matter how much progress we make, we will always see the flaws in the world around us first, because ultimately that's what keeps US working towards making the NEXT generations world less shitty.

I don't think it's as simple as confirmation bias or optimism/pessimism. It isn't so much a "glass is half empty" vs. "glass is half full"  thing, so much as a "um.. guys... this glass is half full... of piss" thing.

Funny thing about piss, if you drink it, it can keep you alive a little longer so you can get yourself to some water.

Yes, you're right, we haven't defeated all those things and we probably never will in our lifetime, yet while cynicism is a great tool for helping us to recognize problems it is the shittiest possible attitude to have for going about about fixing them. The article talks about how optimism isn't simply sitting around hoping things will turn out alright, it's looking at the things you can do to help solve them. An entire generation of Darias is great for making us aware of problems the world over, but there's a reason that series didn't end with Daria making huge meaningful changes in the world. Because the Darias of the world see all problems as huge insurmountable things that they can only bitch about cause What's the Point in Trying Anyway?

We will never acheive the ideal world for everyone.  But we also have to remember, as pointed out in the article, our Western ideal of an ideal world is not shared by everyone.  Moreover, if we cannot recognize and celebrate the small victories, it will slow advances.

I absolutely agree. Furthermore, we need to embrace the subjectivity of that which we are subjected to. Although we may disagree, we need to embrace and accept the differing paradigms and reflect this acceptance in our behaviours. We'll never get anywhere if we spend all of our time gazing into mirrors or history books instead of walking forwards into tomorrow. But neither will we make it to tomorrow if we do not wield those history books and mirrors as shields to deflect the arrows fired at us from the future. Nobody will ever agree on everything because our beliefs only have relevance in relation to the beliefs of others and it is this relationship that our focus should be on I am so baked right now are you baked too? Rather than celebrating the small victories, we should gather them up and stick them together using our hope and optimism as glue to form greater victories built from the pieces of our smaller victories. In this way, will we be victorious.

Contact any political party and work with the terms "Assist" and "Victory". If you can pull off a 5 minute ramble then you'll get an interview. Be sure to work in Eton and Oxbridge credentials too.

I'll take 5%, see you in Westminster.
