i humbly submit:

QuoteIt's so hard to believe in anything anymore. I mean, it's like, religion, you really can't take it seriously, because it seems so mythological, it seems so arbitrary...but, on the other hand, science is just pure empiricism, and by virtue of its method, it excludes metaphysics. I guess I wouldn't believe in anything any more if it weren't for my lucky astrology mood watch. -Steve Martin

Now let's repeat the non-conformists' oath: I promise to be different! (audience repeats) I promise to be unique! (audience repeats) I promise not to repeat things other people say! (audience laughs, repeats) Good! -Steve Martin

George Carlin. Steve Martin is just a little too bland for me. Plus he keeps that sheepish grin on his face all the time, he looks like my dog when she's pissed in the floor behind my back.

George Carlin.  The way the guy dissected language and how it reflects our cultural imperfections is something we need desperately.  There was this bit he did about how our fear of language was reflected in how shell shock turned into battle fatigue turned into post-traumatic stress disorder.  He had his bits of shock humor but when he pulled apart the country's values is when he was at his best.  Seeing him live was one of the greatest things I've ever done, EVER.

George Carlin!

QuoteNew Rule:
Just because your tattoo has Chinese characters in it doesn't make you spiritual.  It's right above the crack of your ass. And it translates to "beef with broccoli." The last time you did anything spiritual, you were praying to God you weren't pregnant. You're not spiritual.  You're just high. - George Carlin's New Rules

QuoteI'm completely in favor of the separation of Church and State. My idea is that these two institutions screw us up enough on their own, so both of them together is certain death.

QuoteThe reason I talk to myself is that I'm the only one whose answers I accept.

to the question "who is funnier"? I definitely vote Martin.

Carlin was sharp. But especially later in his career, he wasn't trying to make you laugh, he was trying to piss you off. Carlin did it well, but I think Martin was a better comedian.

also, for what it's worth, it was asking for opinions on them, as comedians, in the 70's.  something happened to both of them in the 80's - Carlin got angry and Martin got all touchy-feely.

while the hippy-dippy weather man is funny.  i just don't think it can touch "the cruel shoes" also - martin gets points for being mad good at the banjo.

i do think that the two comedians, somehow, can't help but appeal to discordians.

also, way to not be pigeon-holed bob newhart fans, but leslie nielson is and always will be the king of dead pan.
