Title: Hey roger, are they changing the law because of you?

The wording on this is so vague it could be applied to anything based on electronic communication. How does one enforce and prove that the crime was committed?

QuoteHow does one enforce and prove that the crime was committed?

They'll use the time-tested Arizonian method of checking if the suspect is Latino or not.

On the bright side, this means every pinealist who comes to PD.com will also be breaking the law, since the annoyance only has to occur in Arizona, not the source of the annoyance.

So it's a potentially GOOD thing.  :lulz:

So...  The next time you are offended by... say... a militant pro-life webpage, call the cops?

This, until it goes to court and gets kicked in the teeth, has some potential to raise havoc...

that seems like it would actually be an attractive prospect to many, just for shitsngiggles...

Except that this is Arizona, and being caught up in the legal system here outweighs any possible lulz.

Bear in mind that this is ME saying this.

All this is going to do is send trolls to prison where they shack up with other trolls and learn to troll better. Little Timmy gets locked away a few years for linking his teacher to goatse, he comes out a member of HIMEOBS with "Troll Life" tattooed across his chest.

This law is only going to be enforced against social out-groups anyway.  You can bet some odious little shit writing about the need to shoot all illegal immigrants and their families and friends on this site of the border, will get away scott-free, while, say, someone sending mocking emails to the Governor will be strung up by their heels.

Not that they really need another law for that, but, you know... Too much is better than not enough, and all that.

certainly.
some laws are birthed into this world with a glowing banner atop them pronouncing them to be meted out unevenly.
they don't have to specifically say who they are intended to target.
of course, the target can change over time...
gun control laws were first introduced to be used only against the newly freed slaves after the war.

I can always take advantage of the fact that I'm from NY and email a few nice pics to arizona's governor. Not a whole lot they can do about it either. Sure, the states have extradition treaties amongst themselves, but it would be too expensive for something that amounts to a misdemeanor prank. And the NY AG will certainly point that out.

Personally i think the man is a cunt from the middle ages that somehow built a time machine and became sheriff.

Naw.  It's fucking miserable up in Phoenix.

Thing is, there's three types of people in the world.

1.  People who will listen when you explain that the rule of law demonstratably no longer really exists.

2.  People who won't listen.  There's no point getting upset, because they've already made up their mind.  Grab some popcorn and sit back.

3.  People who are smart enough to proxy like a mad bastard, get the desired effect, without stamping their name all over it in some weird bid for recognition.

People have been saying that Sheriff Joe is going down for something like 15 years now.  He's still squatting on his haunches up in Tempe, though...And if he says "jump", our governor asks "how high" on the way up.

So while he may be some awful holdover from the deep South of the 1930s, he's also one of the most powerful people in the Southwest.

And he's not a fed.  Just saying.

That's interesting, about the governor... it should be the other way round. However what I am saying is that the Fed trumps states rights ever since 1865, and if Joe becomes enough of a PITA then they will explain a few things to him. Yes, I *know* hes not a fed.

Not sure what you guys are on about but I have yet to see a Nork design a proper parking lot. (I'm USian in case anybody wondered...) My area gets over-run with canadians doing the shopping on weekends. Timbits and all.

See, this is why we need more brutal & effective border control.  Just grab one out of every ten of those Andy Gibb haircut-wearing jackasses and give them the Nogales Treatment.  The rest will fall in line soon enough.

It's entirely possible that this state of affairs could go on indefinitely.  In fact, looking around, we appear to be marching backwards.

What I'm saying is, unless you're one of their own (moneied, connections) or in the RARE circumstance where the ACLU takes your case, you're going. If they trace it back to you, a government body anywhere has only to utter the following magic words: "Wanted for questioning in connection with possible threats of terrorism" and you will find yourself in 118-degree weather in a glorified port-o-let. Period. In case you haven't noticed, concepts like "rule of law" "unconstitutional" and "contradicts an existing protective statute" are reeeeeally fuzzy these days.

Don't believe me? Try crossing the border a few dozen times with goods purchased from Canada. Make sure you follow all the laws and bring a copy of them with you to show the border agents when they INSIST you must pay duty on your new lingerie because they're considered sex toys and there's a restriction on them.

It doesn't actually matter what your rights are or what the law is. All that matters is what orders got handed down to the guys with the guns that particular day. You can show them a copy of the constitution but if their P.O.D. says "Knock on Inode's door. Extradite to AZ," guess where you're going?

well, I disagree (based on experience). Yes I know you can be locked up at the border for most anything, but I also know its not likely. Nor is it likely to remain that way.

1 - a few minor connections (no money tho)
2 - as a matter of fact, yes, a few lawyers and/or referrals
3 - new IP addys anytime I want... I could be coming from a router in Botswana tomorrow, ya know...
4 - crossing the border is routine and boring especially with the enhanced ID's.
5 - in fact yes the rule of law does matter or else we wouldn't have a civilization with which to discuss things. Notice that doesn't mean its perfect - I could still be massively inconvenienced for a while.

I'm well aware that we live in what amounts to a totalitarian state. I also know they're not dumb enough to overtly push it. Meantime, anything I can do to repeal the so-called Patriot Act, along with a few so-called "trade agreements".

This is blatantly false.  It is possible to have a civilization based on the rule of expedience, rather than the rule of law.  In fact, most of human history was run that way.

And I've been around the block a time or two, myself.  If you don't have a good lawyer, they'll do whatever the fuck they want with you.  If you DO have a good lawyer, he might be able to add a little sanity to the situation.

But in the end, all they have to do is call you a "person of interest", as they did with that Anderson guy back in 2005, and you'll be bloody lucky to see daylight again.

Yeah, "totalitarian" is pushing it just a tiny little bit.

Are you living in a semi-authoritarian, paramilitarized state where rule of law is inconsistently and selectively applied and surveillance is endemic?  Sure.

On the other hand, you are still living.  And not in a concentration camp.

What actually surprises me about this is the complete lack of Christian metaphors and Jesus references. She even mentions Celtic somethingorother.

This'll never fly in Schools in the South, will it?

You keep seeing jokes about Nascar, but it's actually not that much of a hyperbole.  Particularly when it comes to Dale Sr.

Oh, I suppose, indeed. Would it be similar to a type of "soccer god" guy we got over here (including the famous quotes that I found are pretty much exactly like your Yogi Berra) ? Or worse?

Anyway, I just figured some fundie would conclude there's not enough jebus in that book and thus try to ban or burn it.

Nope.  Dude was from the south, and he was religious I think, so you're pretty safe with Dale.

Jesus fucking hell. You wanna see some Alabamians cry? Start talking about coach "Bear" Bryant. Or just wear a houndstooth fedora on a patriotic holiday and place it over your heart during the National Anthem before the fireworks display.

Our trip to Vegas last month coincided with the big Nascar thing they apparently also had going on. Just swarms of them everywhere. Our first night there we left one of the casinos only to see thousands of Nascar fans lining the streets cheering as the trucks carrying the cars parade through blasting their horns. The worst part of it was seeing the fountain show at the Bellagio. Instead of Sinatra, or hell even Metallica or almost anything else, EVERY time we walked by for one of the shows the song was some variety of "Amurrica! Fuck Yea!" except it was more http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AqCFq5sPxNo  than it was a funny song from Team America.
