Title: Politics in Georgia . . .
Post by: Cardinal Pizza Deliverance. on February 22, 2012, 02:20:34 AM
Sorry if this has been posted and I missed it. I swear I looked.

http://news.blogs.cnn.com/2012/02/21/georgia-democrats-to-propose-limitations-on-vasectomies-for-men/?hpt=hp_c2

QuoteAs members of Georgia's House of Representatives debate whether to prohibit abortions for women more than 20 weeks pregnant, House Democrats  planned to introduce their own reproductive rights plan: No more vasectomies that leave "thousands of children ... deprived of birth."

QuoteThe anti-vasectomy bill was a response to a bill that would punish abortions performed after the 20th week of pregnancy with prison sentences between one and 10 years. Georgia law currently prohibits abortion after the second trimester, except to preserve the life and health of the mother.

It's interesting that women politicians are fighting back against idiotic policies proposed by their colleagues. The whole abortion hubris is stupid the whole way around and it shouldn't even be an issue. But barring that, I guess if they wanna knuckle-drag through the mud, I might as well get my popcorn and lemonade and a lawn chair to watch.

And then here's what's going on in other states, according to this article:

QuoteEarlier this month, Democratic Oklahoma Sen. Constance Johnson added - then withdrew - a provision to an anti-abortion bill that read "any action in which a man ejaculates or otherwise deposits semen anywhere but in a woman's vagina shall be interpreted and construed as an action against an unborn child." The state Senate passed the bill this month.

QuoteIn January, as the Virginia State Senate debated a bill that required women to have an ultrasound before an abortion, Democrat Janet Howell attached an amendment that required men to have a rectal exam and cardiac stress tests before they could receive prescriptions for erectile dysfunction medication like Viagra. The amendment was rejected in the Senate, 21-19.

I gotta say, it's good to see the dems finally using mockery as a weapon.

I have no doubt this will be lost on the intended audience.

Oh, don't be so sure.

Anyway, it beats the hell out of the dems 10 years ago.

Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL)1:  "Torture?  What the hell?  Are we NAZIs now?"

VP Dick Cheney (R-Hades):  "What the fuck did you just say?"

Senator Dick Durbin:  "Nothing, sir.  Here's your coffee, I made it just the way you like it."

1  Dick Durbin grew a spine later on.  Sort of.

It isn't too far now, when stand-up comedians will be interchangeable with politicians. This makes me think that Stephen Colbert will be our next president.

This is pretty excellent. It's good to see democrats are finally standing up for themselves. It was getting a little sad. And this is probably the most interesting way they could've done it.

The real problem is that it's getting harder and harder to distinguish between satire and authentic stupidity. Like last week when someone posted the link about the guy in Mississippi who wanted to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. Until somebody gave me a link to an article where he explicitly said it was a joke, I had no reason to believe it wasn't serious. Then there are sites like Christians For A Moral America*--I've been following it off and on for a month or so now and still haven't decided whether or not they're serious.

*Was going to link, but apparently the blog no longer exists--don't know if blogspot took it down or what. There's still a Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Christians-For-A-Moral-America-CFAMA/341431812535474), but it hasn't been updated since January.

This is a problem I have as well. Telling real stupid from funny stupid can be tricky, what with all the burgeoning growth of new real stupid everywhere you look.

There have been so many times in the last year that I've been CONVINCED that something was satire, only then it wasn't.

I think we might be becoming a post-satirical society. Unfortunately I have no fucking idea what that means.
