Pull my pants back up. for the sake of the children
I was actually (considering) going to post something offering to GM last night. Seriously.
Anybody here play HERO System? I got the 5th ed book three years ago but haven't been able to get a game going with it. I think there the stuff you need to make a character is online for free, or maybe that was just GURPS...
Yes but GURPS requires 3 different books just to figure out the combat system.
http://www.d20srd.org
http://www.d20pfsrd.com
Dunno if there's a fourth edition version of this.
1. How does one play a D20 system over the internet? Or do you use dice at all?
2. If anyone is up for some Pathfinder, I can run a game.
I'd insist on pathfinder (or maybe 4th, if anybody actually wanted that) trying to do 3.5 with pathfinder running around my head drives me bonkers.
Most PbP games I've done use the invisible castle dicebot.
http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/
There are some character sheet sites too, I'd need to track a pathfinder one down.
I've never gotten into a play by post (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Play-by-post_role-playing_game) rpg. A system like D&D, where the game stops until the person whose turn it is takes an action, sounds like it'd be frustrating to play on a forum. It actually might be alright if there wasn't much combat, but there are probably better formats out there.
actually, D&D4's skill challenge system might actually work pretty well for an online campaign.
What about IRC, would that be better, or worse, than a forum?
IRC
pros: faster paced, able to resolve things like combat without a round taking a day of real time
cons: everybody has to be online at the same time
Surely that con is the same con as it would be doing it on a forum though, right?
IRC, that's the chat room, right?
IRC is the chat, yeah, the thing with forums is that if somebody is missing, you just keep going until its their turn, which means combat takes all week, but it still gets done.
Apparently there are still no online Pathfinder sheets :argh!:
Which means offline sheets and email them to the DM, or bugger up the wiki with them.
I got a PDF of them in my Piazzo account. I don't know how to fanagle PDFs to fill in stuff, though.
And 4th ed FTL. Just my personal opinion.
You need adobe acrobat (which is expensive) instead of adobe reader, also the Paizo ones aren't fillable, though there are fillable PDFs on PathfinderDB.
Ah. Well, it's simple enough to just make a text document with everything on it. I do it with paper when we run out of sheets.
Oh hey, a DM who won't care if I just send her notepad files :D
:lulz:
Mistress Freeky,
not a total cuntbag anally retentive person.
Fixed cuz I figured out what I was trying to say.
Right, so, you're running the game freeky, so details :D
How hard it is to learn how to D&D? I always wanted to give it a try but never got around to it.
AtD,
wishes to be a little nerd.
Hokay. I need first level characters, NO EVIL ALIGNMENTS PLZ. Point buy system for stats, Player's guide races only.
If you have the beta test book, you can use the half orc from there. Lousy final version, totally roont it...
It's totally easy, Annabelle.
Moderately hard, it requires that
A) you actually read the fucking manual, not necessarily every class and spell, but all the ones you have, and how to do combat/skills/spells in general.
and
B) you be capable of basic arithmetic.
Link to the manual you guys plan to use?
http://www.d20pfsrd.com
The pathfinder pointbuy system I assume? And how many points?
The highest amount. I forget how many that is, because I don't have the Players Guide. And yes, Pathfinder point system.
ETA: 25 points. That's a real neat site, there, Requia.
Do you have a specific campaign world in mind?

I'm not sure about the tediousness, but I agree with you on the face to face. But still, i crave it during the week, and the only way I get to play is if I can get a ride to the other side of town (read: 40 miles away).
Good good, Sig. Make me up a character sheet in notepad or whatever you have, and PM it to me.
Are we going to use a thread for this? I think I'd prefer it, because if I end up getting the boot from the comp all of a sudden, stuff will still be here. And stuff.

I agree, I'm skeptical. But there must be a format of game which is perfect for forums.
one day it might be fun to play KOBOLDS ATE MY BABIES.. that's a very silly game, and we'd all get to die in numerous horrible ways.
if we don't like how the game's going, we can vote out the current mayor (GM). But here's the thing - nobody "runs" for mayor, the next mayor is chosen BY DIE ROLL.

Also, max gold according to your class (unless you took the Rich Parents trait, which is 900 gold) for starting gold.
Oh, yes. He's a great DM. Too bad he's under doctor supervision now... I guess we'll have to get another of our group to continue the campaign.
Yeah, Roger hasn't exactly made it a secret he's a DM before now. I'm surprised you missed that info.

Yeah I love that game. You would probably have most luck with something similarly silly and short duration.
I loathe the rulebook for that one though, it's short, but soo obtuse and written in all caps and the actual rulings are hidden in paragraphs of jokes that are really only funny the first three times you try to find a rule. Not that the rules matter a lot in this game, but just a little quick reference now and then would be nice.

this is also a good rule. the game dying because the GM not doing their thing or nobody being up for doing the job is something I'd expect to happen in an online forum game as well.
It's more that there isn't much for a wizard to do at level 1.
I like sorcerer better, myself. The bloodlines rule is the shit!

Become a powerful lich and eat a grue. Take another shit on the dragon's doorstep. Then amass a powerful undead army. Train them to scale the dragon's fortress and shit down his chimney.
Annabelle: For a rogue, human is good because they get an extra 'feat' which is like a skill or a special trick, or extra training in a particular area, and they get a bonus to any stat. So is elf because they get a racial bonus to their Dexterity (which is good for your armor class, which is how hard it is to hit you) and to Intelligence, which gives you more 'skills'. More details on that later. Halflings are also good choices, for the bonus to Dex, and also they get a bonus to their Charisma, which is very useful in situations where you want to bluff or negotiate yourself out of a situation.
Basically, any race is good for any class, so if you want to go solely on what bonuses a race gets, look for ones that boost Dexterity first and foremost, and beyond that it depends what you want to do with your character.
Also, unless the rules changed for Pathfinder, elves get a full search check even while moving at full speed, and can use longswords and longbows without having to take feats for those weapons (though quite frankly, if you don't take weapon finesse as a rogue, WAYSA?). The former is incredibly useful, and the second can give them an extra bit of potency, at least with the longbow.
Personally, I think halflings are overrated as rogues. Elves or humans are the way to go.
Nah, it got switched out for Elven Magic, which gives them a +2 racial bonus to caster level checks, and also a +2 to Spellcraft checks for identifying magic items.
Ah, that sucks then.

I didn't see goblins as a choice. What about aging? Humans seem to have comparably low lifespans. How much does that affect things?
I was just making a non sequitur about classes that make good rogues. You can play a lot of the races out of the monster manual, and there are rules for how to do so, but its always at the discretion of the DM.

Thats probably why goblins have that racial affinity to hide in the first place, but yeah, it depends on the kind of campaign your playing.
I did run an all goblinoid game for a while, which was a lot of fun.
Good question. What kind of campaign should we play?
I reckon Freeky should base the plot off random TV Tropes pages, and the personalities of various NPCs from Friends characters.

its about the same level of change as 3.0 to 3.5. Double checking everything you do at character creation and reading up on the combat maneuver (grapple, disarm etc) stuff should be sufficient.
Quote from: Sigmatic on February 06, 2010, 10:34:32 PM
Good question. What kind of campaign should we play?
A premise would be good to know, yeah.
I know I haven't been active at all lately, but I'm chiming in to say that I love tabletop RPs, and the one I'm involved in is a little slow due to one of my players having housing problems (which should be resolved with him moving into an apartment this weekend), and that I'm DM, and haven't had a chance to play rather than run a game in a good while. If my schedule permits and you guys are still taking players, I might want in the game, though I would have to acquaint myself with the changes between 3.5 and Pathfinder, or if there are too many players for one game I might consent to running another rp for the folks here. (Warning: it would probably be nWoD Hunter with elements of Discordia thrown in for hilarity and intrigue, so people who dislike WoD, dislike hunter, dislike conspiracy theories, dislike me, or dislike fuzzy bunnies should not vote for the latter option.)
Working backwards:
I had a few things in mind. Urban crawling, for the most part for a bit.
Like Requia says, Pathfinder is very similar to 3.5. If you know the 3.5 system, there aren't many rules you don't already know the basics to, but the details have changed in a lot of things.
Goblins are NOT a playable race, due to them being, you know, evil. Elf, 1/2 elf, 1/2 orc, halfling, human, gnome and dwarf only.
Rebuttal to Cain's assesment of lawful stupid: Probably, but do you consider the entire lawful good spectrum to be lawful stupid? If it's played smart, it isn't bad. I'm in a campaign right now where our cleric is LG and I have a kobold cohort.
KOBOLD. COHORT. :D
And age does not have any determining whatsoever on a campaign unless it spans a few years in game time and you put the age too close to the next age bracket.
ETA: I can't play weekends, and sometimes I'll get kicked off during the week. But I'm usually on at least half the day during the week and at night too.
Oh no, Lawful Good can be done without being an idiot (see: Sam Vimes for an awesome Lawful Good type character) it just seems to be the case that inferior players either forget the "good" part, and try to slaughter every possibly evil creature they can, or become suicidal in their attempts to do good (like attempting to convert an illithid).
Hah! Very true. Luckily I game with experienced players.
I always figured Sam Vimes to be more LN, but I guess you're right. He does have more of a tendency towards good than neutral, especially after he has a family.
I've wanted to get into DnD for a while, but I never got a chance. I definitely want in if the rest of you are ok with an annoying noob.
Sure, and I keep meaning to mention to all you people who are new to D&D totally, I can help you until you get the hang of it yourself.

Also, you guys will be in Cheliax, in Westcrown. If you decide you want to be a citizen of Westcrown, you can't be a hellknight at any time during the campaign, for reasons that will become pretty apprent when we start.
I'm almost done with mine. Its a human Sorcerer, although I intend to cross-class with him.
Sweet, what are you going to do with him?
He's a Use Magic Device based character; I haven't completely made up my mind on what to cross class him with. Being that I took the Dangerously Curious Trait and Use Magic Device can be a class skill for him all the time, it will probably be fighter. Although at first, before I did traits, I was thinking about going bard... because he's a total fancy-lad. Also, I totally took the Rich Parents trait, btw.
What's his bloodline, btw?
Arcane.
Nice.
I'd probably want to play Druid, though I'm not sure what race.
Hmm. Well, you could go with dwarf, they get a stat boost to Wisdom. Or one of the races which gets a +2 to any stat.
If I may make a suggestion, go with human. They get an extra feat, and that's always handy. What aspect of druid appeals most to you?
I'm in your RPG, pillaging your village!
:argh!: Curse you, RWHN!
Get in line! :argh!:
I'ma drop a swarm of MONKEYBEES on you! :argh!: See if I don't!
So this means you have hives?

What aspect of druid appeals most to you?
Wild Shape. I like the other aspects of their nature/divine thematics, but shapeshifting is my all time favorite magic power, so that's what really draws me to the class.
If it isn't the summon nature's ally that you want (and I hope that you'll leave off on that because we're going to have a huge group anyway), I'ma suggest you do an item making druid. The party can benefit from all kinds of potions and crap you can make, and you no longer have to burn xp to make items. Plus, Wand of Flame Strike for the win.

In pathfinder if you have any class that has the skill, its always a class skill, since class skill bonus only applies to the first rank.
Also, something else tracked down for the players:
hxxp://ifile.it/v6871se/CoT%20Players%20Guide.pdf A quick players guide that covers the city we'll be starting in. It's also a free download from Paizo if you have an account there.

Sorry, got a little held up with a windows reinstall.
Finished with that now, you'll have the character tomorrow morning.
I'm assuming we're doing this through google chrome?
I haven't looked at that yet, but can install it tomorrow.
Chrome is a web browser, the wave thing doesn't need an install. I will finish my character eventually (its mostly done really, just screwing with details).

If you guys need an extra PC, I suppose I can chip in (though the next two weeks might limit my online time a little, since family will be round).

If no-one else is playing rogue, I'll do that (I've aced most Bioware D&D based computer games as that class), but if someone else wants it I have no problem being the muscle for the campaign. It all depends on what everyone else is doing

I haven't heard back from AtD, but he was asking about rogue. Then again, the way things are in Pathfinder, rogue can
almost stand in for muscle now, so we coud have a stabby rogue and a sneaky rogue.
Working on the Sorceror/Elf... Hope to finish by sometime tomorrow.
Good good.
I'm definitely up for rogue, either stabby or sneaky.
Stabby/sneaky it is.
Cool, I thought you were still in, but I wasn't sure.
I'll get on making another PC then.

So I'm new to RPGs in general (as in I have never played one) and I want to start a character that requires as little knowledge as possible when it comes to the rules. Or if possible, a class that starts out being very simple to use and gradually becomes more complicated, so that I'd have to learn. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I'd say sorcerer, because its spontaneous casting and that means you don't have to worry about how many of which spell to memorize, like most of the other spellcasters do.
Sorceror is by far the easiest spellcasting class for a beginner.
However, we already have two sorcerors in the party, while we only have one high competency melee class (the ranger). We could really do with another melee class, like a fighter, paladin or barbarian to balance things out. Especially since our ranger isn't exactly a tank, either.

It's settled, then. I'm going fighter.
The count stands at 1 fighter, 1 ranger, 1 rogue, 1 cleric, 2 sorcerers.
Hey are you guys still accepting party members? I'd sure like to play! I'm happy to take whatever class would be good to balance out the party, sounds like a paladin might do the trick.
Sure.
Awesome! I'm excited, and currently reading through this whole thread right now.

Exactly!! This may take a few to get off the ground (still waiting on a few people to get me their character sheets :argh!: ) And now that the party is so big I'll have to figure out something else, because the campaign I was thinking just will not work with so many people.

I think I'll have to bow out, as soon after expressing interest here a friend of mine IRL got me excited about running a game for him, and that leaves me a bit over committed.
That's fine. I just either need to know if people aren't playing OR I need their character sheet.
I'll be playing, but I need to create my character first. I wanted to go with Half-Orc, but I remember you posting that only the beta version was acceptable, so I guess I'll go with Half-Elf.

I didn't catch that (although I have read through the bulk of this thread point). I was planning to play a half orc myself but if it's problematic i will happily change to a human.
Also, I'm hoping to play a monk in this game if that's acceptable. I think that will be a good way to balance out the party right? Who all is still playing which classes, anyway?

I was going to go with Half-Orc Fighter. Half-Orcs seem like the perfect melee class and I like that race's characterization anyway.
Yeah, that's a tried and true way to go, I say do it. Half orcs get a strength bonus but they take a hit to charisma and intelligence, so they are well suited to be the party tank. I'll definitely switch to human as well, no sense having a bunch of half-orcs in the party.
[Edited after actually reading the Pathfinder half-orc rules. I definitely will be playing a half orc now!]

I said I'd allow Beta rules if you have them. I just think they got nerfed badly, is all. If you want to use a non-beta half-orc, go right ahead.

I said Yes.
So, as mentioned elsewhere, I'm not going to be around much either the rest of this week, and possibly next week as well.
Have we decided if we're going to try and use IRC or not? I really found some aspects of Wave to be annoying, and it "felt" clunky. I can offer the use of the #himeobs channel, since nothing else is happening in there, but if we decide to go ahead with that, I won't be available until some people start moving out around here.
Sorry about the delays and everything. I'm trying to get my shit together IRL. I think the IRC idea will be good, and since I haven't heard from anyone else about it, I say it's a go. It'll just have to wait a bit. Again.
