Yes, Bin Laden is dead, but it comes too little, too late. Bin Laden in prison would have at least been useful. With time, and some correctly applied psychological and spiritual pressure, he may have been made to recant his position, as many terrorist leaders have done before now. And he may have provided insights into methods and identities. It is surprising how useful these former ideologues can be to their enemies, once removed from the limelight.
Killing him, meanwhile, achieves little. If it had been done before 2004 or so...maybe it would have had a greater effect. But Al-Qaeda has been in a franchise mode for a long time now. AQIM (Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Mahgreb) have virtually no connection to Bin Laden, for example, having been born out of the Algeria conflict and the Iraqi civil war following the American invasion. Al-Qaeda in Iraq was similarly born out of militants from Saudi Arabia and Jordan doing some border crossing, while Syria dumped its own Islamist radical political prisoners in the country.
Also, US prestige in the region remains in the gutter. Both militarily, where the US has been bogged down by Koran-repeating mouthbreathers and orphans without shoes, and in terms of how publics there see America (as a supporter of tyrants and enemies of the people...coincidentally, Bin Laden's view).
The Middle East is crawling with terrorists and violence in volumes that were simply unconcievable 10 years ago. America is still hated, and lots of angry young men are getting a schooling in the arts of bombing, assassination and kidnapping. A Bin Laden can hardly make the situation any worse, and so, his removal cannot also make things any better.
This success is hollow. It will secure re-election for a man whose actions help create the conditions in which terrorism will flourish, and nothing more.

I don't think it would be worth the risk to fake killing him, 8 or 9 years ago, maybe, but two days ago, no one really gave a damn about Osama, and him not being caught wouldn't really affect Obama's chances at re-election (unless the Republican nominee single handedly went to Pakistan to kill Osama himself). However, if this is fake, and it gets out that it is fake, there is no way Obama would be re-elected.
Regarding the eight months thing, I would say it is plausible that they killed him 7-8 months ago, and decided to keep it until there is nothing negative Obama could be accused at diverting attention from.

Looking at this thing head on I realize it could cause many subtle changes. Still, I take your point. "They" could have done this at any point in the last 10 years. That it has happened now suggests, at the very worst, Bin Laden is in no poisition to contradict the US claims or, more likely and positively, he is in fact dead.
I'm fairly sure some of the claims about the firefight are bullshit. I bet Bin Laden wasn't given a chance to come in peacefully, for example. And he may have had someone with him to ensure he didn't fall into American hands alive, or to an American bullet. But I'm fairly confident the overall facts of what happened are accurate.

Osama acted very much like a state sponsor of terrorism, he was in the background, doing logistical things which were the nuts and bolts of international terror, and letting others work to goals with which he ideologically agreed with. KSM was actually probably more dangerous, in the long view. He had recruited the terrorists which had attacked the WTC previously, planned the "Bojinka" operation, the assassination of the Pope and of Clinton, among other things. Zawahiri's group was behind the Khobar Towers and Tanzania/Kenya Embassy attacks. Khalid al-Mihdhar was behind the USS Cole attacks, which suggests he was a KSM man.
After the success of the attacks, of course, he was totally willing to be potrayed as the mastermind behind it.

I don't think he even did that, too much. KSM had his own grouplet, and refused to integrate fully with Bin Laden's Al-Qaeda until 1999...which was when 9/11 was first planned. 9/11 was also a variation on Bojinka, KSM and Ramzi Yousef's earlier, aborted attack.

Yeah. The civilian government probably was, to be fair. Well, elements of the civilian government. And the head of the Pakistani military is, surprisingly, a fairly decent character. I was under the impression that Bush's family was friends with the Bin Laden family - not necessarily Osama, but his father or one of his 25 brothers or something. Whoever controls the oil side of the Bin Laden empire. I can see it being a favor to give Osama a seven year head start from the Bush family to the Bin Laden family.

And then it would put him in a legal black hole, as torture would make it impossible for a civilian trial to proceed, but, well who is going to argue in favour of Bin Laden's civil liberties? Like it or not he has earned some measure of respect for avoiding capture or death for nearly 10 years after pulling off the most notable terrorist attack in history while several super powers were looking for him. Geronimo was equally hated and feared by his enemies in his day.

Ok I have finally organized my main questions about this. Would love to hear some answers.
We have DNA tests proving it was him, so I'm willing to accept that. I'm also willing to accept that the photos shouldn't be released. So I'm willing to accept it was most likely him killed in the raid and willing to accept that he is indeed dead.
We're first told that he's killed via gun fight like one of those old western movies. It turns out now that he was unarmed and the other woman who was killed was struck down upstairs, probably killed by a stray. After the fight they threw his body into the sea rather then transport it back to the US, probably to prevent gawkers or something.
The government also lied about the style of house.
These lies came from people who saw the events unfolded via webcam (or something of that nature).
It seems as though the lies were some kind of attempt to mold the tale in terms of making it mythic, and it had to be at least somewhat intentional. They saw this unfold and they had the information for a week before hand, so this is not "fog of war" crap.
My question is why lie?
You could say perhaps some in the public wouldn't like the idea of killing an unarmed man. But come this is Osama Bin Laden we're talking about here. I don't think people would have cared if they shot him in the back of the head while he was taking a shit. Even the most fervent uber-leftest probably would have at least been emotionally happy at the events and people think more with their emotions then their ideals.
You could say perhaps that they were trying to limit the anger response some fundamentalists in the ME, but having him going out in a blaze of glory is worse because you don't only make it mythic for the American public but also for people on the other side of the equation. Maybe the attempt to say he used human shields is a part of that strategy, but even then women really aren't that valued among the type of people that would be inclined to make Osama a martyr. If this was the reason it seems ill-conceived. And again they had a week before the announcement.
You could say this is just the American myth making apparatus at work here, but to be fair it seems to me more deliberate then anything.
You could say Obama is just trying to make himself look better, but really just the fact they killed Osama more or less reinsures a political bump.
You could say the raid may have went really bad and they're trying to cover up something. That is a possibility, but the evidence is very thin right now.
This is what I mean when I say something doesn't add up here. There is something unsettling here that I can't put my finger here.

I think that's what [forgotten who posted it] was getting at in that other thread in AE. The death of OBL fits neatly into a narrative that started with 9/11, but avoids much of the nuance (and even a lot of facts) about what actually was/is going on.

It really is brilliant. Creating resentment among Al-Quaida against their fallen leader, instead of outrage at his death... it will make it harder for them to be motivated toward retaliation.

I've done some debriefings of A-10 pilots when I was in Afghanistan, and often what they say they remember happening does not always mesh perfectly with what the on board video recorders show happened. I imagine this effect is even more intense when you are dealing with an on the ground firefight. The initial reporting probably said one thing, but was clarified after the fact. there might be a bit of an element of propaganda going on, but I doubt the answer is really that complicated.

2. The CIA lies when the truth is easier.

Cool. I'm currently in Atlantia, but haven't played since we moved down here from Aethelmearc. Adding a bambina to the mix has made it difficult to make time to get involved.
Let us know if you'll be at Pennsic. There will be booze (just none for the bambina).
Good to know Discordians are representing at the War...but unfortunately we will not be attending anytime soon. If I can ever manage to get a job back in Pittsburgh it might be a possibility, but chances are remote. Where do you normally camp?

To be fair, even with streaming video and updates, they probably had no idea what was going on, because even the guys on the ground had almost no idea what was happening.
Things get confusing when people start throwing lead around.
Also, quite likely that it was hard to tell who was who when the bullets were flying around, with what was probably an iffy video feed.
It's hard to tell when you're there in person, which is why friendly fire is such a bitch.

SCA combat's a far cry from the real thing, but I've caught a spear to the kidney from a teammate that was "friendly fire."
During the merchants vs pirates event, one of my friends and I ran across the cleared gangplank to the Pirate side... there was some poor guy there and my friend shouts, "MErchat or Pirate? Merchant or Pirate?" to which the stunned fighter says "Huh?" and William says "Pirate!" and takes him down...
He was a merchant, like us. :lulz:
What if...The Republic of Venice says I'm a merchant, but the Kingdom of Naples says I'm a pirate as mandated by the Spanish Crown?!
