Title: Oh man, the Taliban are kicking our arses

QuoteThe Taliban has a permanent presence in 72% of the territory of Afghanistan, up from 54% last year, and is expanding its control beyond the rural south of the country, the International Council on Security and Development, formerly the Senlis Council, says in a report today.

The independent thinktank and research organisation says three of the four main routes leading out of Kabul, the capital, are threatened by the Taliban.

OK, serious question here: when was the last time a country successfully occupied Afghanistan?  And by successful, I mean both entering and leaving of their own free will, having achieved their overall strategic objective.

"Buying smack" is not a strategic objective.

Well, not unless its a LOT of smack.

You're saying we need to revive Genghis Khan, aren't you?

I'm assuming that "raping and pillaging" counts as a strategic objective here.

I think if we're going to have an Empire, we should at least have people who know how to run one.  This shit is getting embarassing.  If we gave the Afghani's aircraft carriers and F-16s, they'd be instituting Sharia law in Prague by now.

"It should be noted that in reality, the burial sites of most of these historical figures such as Caesar, Alexander, Solomon, Genghis Khan, Hannibal, and Sun-Tzu have never been discovered. Many were actually cremated. Other more recent figures such as Rasputin and Vlad Tepes have never had their remains positively identified making it impossible to obtain DNA that can be confirmed as theirs."

... and thank you, wikipedia

The Romans knew where Alexander's grave was, and supposedly robbed the hell out of it to make them feel powerful.

...Then again, Caligula was a nut.
