I have been half-convinced that something was going to go horribly wrong and I wouldn't get to go to school after all, since every time I've tried before something major went down that snatched defeat out of the jaws of victory.
But this time, I AM IN! I AM A REAL LIVE COLLEGE STUDENT OMG OMG OMG!!!!
Classes start in six days and I even have all my books.
I am so thrilled I could cry!

I am currently in prerequisiteland, which means that I have 2 more math classes which won't count toward my degree but also that I have a wide range of classes which will. I have 2 years in which almost anything I take will.
Nop, PCC. I won't be at PSU for at least 2 years.
Kai, organic chemistry, although I will also take biology classes, and over the next two years I will have to decide whether my undergrad will be chem or bio, and either one gives me a solid track to my desired outcome so it's all about which engages me more. Right now I am leaning toward chemistry, which I already have a background in due to my glasswork. But that could change, and it will depend a lot on not only which one I am more engaged with, but also which I am more likely to get an assistanceship with at PSU, and which one leads me most clearly to bio-anthro. That could change in the next few years.
Technically I am going for a biophysics degree, but it's kind of a question of which department I am going to get it in, and which department will best behoove me. I am seriously thinking that I would do better to get it in anthropology rather than physics.

It's so important to stay on top of that. Glad to know that financial aid came through for you too. Be sure to get your FAFSA in as SOON as you finish your 2011 tax return, too. That's the best way to get a full amount of aid.

One of my friends, who knows about my secret feelings for him, has this theory that all the guys I have been through are just me fruitlessly seeking him in someone else, and that's why they never work out. She might be right. So, even though he lives on the other side of the country and is pretty established there and might not have any similar feelings, I am going to tell him. I am not going to be that foolish girl who never tells that one guy about her feelings and nobody knows that he feels the same way until after he dies and his grandson sees his diary and tells the old lady and everybody cries.

Tell him by all means. But don't expect him to respond by dropping everything and declaring a mutual unrequited love for you. I think your friend with the theory probably means well, but is talking out of her arse when she says that you've been on a fruitless search to find him in someone else, for all these years.
But you obviously need to tell him how you feel, so tell him.
I really hope that he does have similar feelings for you, and after a whirlwind courtship, he declares his undying love and you both live a blissfully happy and long life together. But you have to be prepared for this not to happen.
The main point is to tell him, because not telling him, is what has built this 'star crossed lovers' scenario up in the first place. I suspect if it was going to happen, it already would have done, despite any minor obstacles like both your's and his marriages / relationships / commitments, and timing issues. But at the very least, you should come away with a more realistic expectation of your relationship with him.
And it will give him something to think about too. Bitter-sweet memories of what could have been aren't really so bad. and it's hardly going to spoil the friendship you both already have, not after all this time.
Also, seeing as he's getting a divorce, it could set you up as his rebound relationship, and although this might be fun for a while, you know rebound relationships rarely end up going anywhere. But tell him. If he really does feel the same, then he should be prepared to think about all the implications, and risks as well. Maybe give the dust a little time to settle. I don't know.
But you really are going to have to tell him now. Just do it calmly, and without any expectations. Then whatever happens is a bonus.
At least, it's a bonus compared to not telling him, and perhaps having another 20 years of wondering what would have happened. That's the kind of shit that drives people right round the bend, and into Miss Havisham's attic.

When you're 19, you're a dumbshit with no foresight who just wants to look cool and have fun. You don't value things like having enough money left over to get an oil change after you pay for all this beer or daycares that stay open past 6 and someone to pick up yr kid who won't accidentally let him eat bleach while you're in class.
I fucked off bigtime in college for the year I went. I spent more time cruising for sex and trying to impress everyone by dressing all in black and bringing back the Beat generation aesthetic (don't hate, I was 19), that I really had no time to actually benefit from education. I thought I was a badass cause I was smarter than everyone...a 19 year old, socially inept, preachy, bigmouthed badass.
Oh yeah, I was slick.
After several years of being sodomized by work, life and people, facing challenges and being in some impossible situations, I was so humbled and grateful to be able to even go to school, I sucked every bit of meat off the bones.

But those are exactly the things you should be doing at 19. I think kids should be educated up to being able to read, write, and do basic maths. Then they should be free to go and do all the stupid shit that kids always end up doing anyway. Then when they've got a bit of life experience under their belts, and have a better idea of what they want to do, get some relevant further education. It's easier to learn stuff when you don't resent the fuck out of having to sit and study what, at that time of life is just boring pointless shit.

Other than the practical matters (it is nearly impossible to attend college full-time while a single parent raising children under 12 and paying a mortgage, for instance) it doesn't, much. I do think that it is a VERY VERY good idea to go to school before having kids and buying a house, though; the
only reason I am pulling this off now with a $1500/mo house payment and 3 kids is because I work from home, I am highly skilled at what I do, and, if I am very disciplined, can supplement my financial aid enough to get by with 9-12 hours a week of torching.
I have less patience for student services because the way they operate is tailored toward the young, clueless, and irresponsible. I want to make an appointment and be in and out, but dealing with the sea of 18-20-year-olds I realize that making appointments and expecting them to keep them would be folly.
It seems much less confusing/frightening because I have 22 years of experience with bureaucracy. I am not intimidated by my teachers, because they are mostly my age and at my age I am aware that teaching at a community college is just a job, not "The Authority".
I have less patience for classes getting bogged down by stupidity/naivete, which would have been a normal part of my peer group 20 years ago.
The idea of not doing my homework is laughable, so it's amusing yet wearying when the teachers repeat over and over again that it's imperative to do the homework. And then I become very aware that I am definitely going to get an A in any class that is graded on a curve, because basically all I have to do is show up, pay attention, and do my homework.
Speaking of which, I have to run off and do it now!

My dogs think they want to return to the wild. My parents often take them camping, and down to a nearby river to play off of their leashes, but they never go very far. They're a bit scaredy cats when it comes to new things, like cows and running water.
My math class was really short today. I love my math teacher; he's this balding gayish stoner dude who talks really slow, wears a bandanna, and tells seemingly rambling stories that not only inform you that he grew up on a farm and helped some redneck dude re-side his grandma's house, but also somehow miraculously at the end of the story you remember how to multiply fractions as if you'd never forgotten.
Anyway, he gave us this group project and said we could leave when we finished it; my group took ten minutes so I have the whole rest of the day to make shit, do general maintenance, and do homework.
But I thought that I would gush about how awesome my math teacher is first.

How do you say that returning to college later in life differs from going as a young person (not that you're by any means old!)?
To expand on what Navcat and Nigel said, I started out in day classes at community college while working parttime then switched to night classes when I started full time (with an online class each semester). The differences were, well, like night and day (hurrrr). For me, a lot of the day classes were like slightly elevated high school classes. Mostly younger people, more quizzes, tests, homework, kids being kids I suppose - not nearly as bad as highschool classes, mind you, since most of the kids still wanted to be there to some extent and could hold a decent discussion, but it still had that...high school feel.
The night classes were mostly older people - those with full time jobs, children, continuing education, etc. Most were focused on the learning at hand when class was ready to start. There were still quizzes and tests and homework, of course, but they seemed more....focused? Meaningful? And homework was given with the expectation of getting it done and learning something from it, but with the understanding that many of the people there also had a lot going on, be it jobs, kids, etc. More mature, I suppose. Could have just been the nature of the evening classes I took, though. I seemed to get on better there at least.
But this was also during a time where I was living with an abusive boyfriend (for the 1st year at least), was estranged from my parents and a lot of my friends (see point 1) and school was probably the most stable thing in my life at the time (besides missing out on the school that I had originally planned to attend and had a good scholarship to). So going to a community college and dealing with all the other BS in my life, I missed out on a lot of the "college experience", but I still enjoyed the classes, particularly the evening ones for the reasons described above and previously.
Also, Nigel, congratulations for being able to go back and pursue a degree that interests you, especially while raising a family and maintaining a home by yourself. I don't have half the responsibility you do and I can't even imagine going back for my Bachelor's, or another AS, right now, even if I knew what I wanted to do. And I'm less than 10 years out of HS

Yeah... I have seen both. I don't know about the effects of cancer treatment being worse, to tell the truth. Maybe it depends on what kind of cancer.
BB, that chart is based on data from 2000. My numbers are from 2009. Do you have anything more current?

Overall, mortality rates from cancer are decreasing despite a small increase in incidence rates. In the UK, the European age-standardised mortality rates for all malignant neoplasms decreased by a fifth from 218 to 175 per 100,000 population between 1978-1980 and 2007-2009.6
Figure 1.1 shows the incidence and mortality rate trend for all cancers combined for Great Britain for 1975-2009 (2008 for incidence).

Some discussion from health care advocates to say theyre cooking the books to achieve that down turn...it's steep...way to steep to be accounted for in treatment advances....Supposition that the sudden downturn in reported drops from cancer deaths in the US is that once they stop being treated for it they don't get counted as dying from it. Death can be put down to untreated secondary infections...lung, staph etc.which is commonplace, UK stats reflect reality more as everyone with cancer is being treated for it under NHS...so all deaths there are attributed to it....checking for info on that.
The us rate is declining far less slowly in the southern states....and in all states it is declining much faster among wealthy whites than poor blacks...big surprise. This dichotomy is esp strong in breast cancer
I'm afraid this is going to be entirely anecdotal for now because I can't seem to find any backing links on a quick google search but.
The area I live in is known as a 'cancer hotspot'. We have something like six or seven times the average rate of cancer for most types in the area. We're a relatively small village, but I know six people in the past three years who have had some sort of cancer, and when I was growing up some of my friend's parents died of it. My first girlfriend had a brain tumor (though thankfully that was treated successfully).
The major employer in my village is G.E Healthcare. About twenty years ago they were openly running radiation treatment experiments at the facilities just up the road from here.
Since then the experiments have been officially stopped, though the facility is still heavily guarded and locked up. Rumors around the village say that they've continued their work in those areas, and that is one of the reasons why this place has such a high cancer rate. I don't know if there's any truth to that, but I would imagine that the fact there were experiments with nuclear materials going on would be a bit too much of a coincidence to be entirely unrelated to the high levels of cancer in an otherwise small country village. I suspect that there's similar situations up and down the country.

That source compiled and averaged data that goes back 35 years, so it's not a very accurate picture of the current state of cancer mortality.
Every source I've seen for 2009-2010 shows a significantly higher mortality rate per 100k in the UK than in the US, which is exactly the opposite of what I would expect given the relative inaccessibility of health care here.

I just went to my first meeting for this program that sets up PCC students with summer research internships at PSU, and it looks like there's a possibility that I might actually be able to do an internship this summer, but that's not as exciting as the fact that this whole program is streamlined (way more than I realized) into PSU's science department, and I can now earn credits for going to free science lectures, and when I transfer to PSU I will basically be plonked right into an NIH-sponsored program there. So now I am taking some different classes next term from what I had originally intended, and also I have much more direction and access to way more resources than I had imagined I would in my first year. There is a whole support system of instructors and mentors and coordinators and classes to get me where I need to be with the highest immersion rate possible. If all goes as planned this means that I will do my internship next summer and start PSU next fall.

The other part of what this does that I didn't mention is that it is directly oriented at networking and community-building... basically, I am gaining access to social resources and a research community that I wasn't expecting to have access to for at least another year and a half. Best of all, this program is a brand-new baby one, and already two of last year's alumni have been offered regular research jobs, one at PSU, one at OHSU.

I think it's because I'm poor, a single mom, and get good grades. It's not a ton of money; about $1900 for the term, but every little bit is a big help!

$1900 pays my tuition for a whole term; it's pretty great, actually. I also have a housemate for the next three months or so, amd that helps a lot.

Right now I'm working on an AA transfer degree (I was going to do a general ed transfer degree but I can't seem to change my major and it doesn't really matter) and I'm in a program that streamlines me into biomedical, behavioral and health sciences at either PSU or OHSU. My next step is a biochemistry undergrad, and then I am going to have to make a decision between epidemiology and neurophysics (or figure out how to combine the two), and figure out which route I want to take to get to it. For epidemiology, an MPH would (probably) be the way to go so I could get into an epidemiology postgrad program, but if I want to go with neurophysics there is no clear-cut path at this time. Two options would be biochemistry or biological anthropology. A lot of that will probably be determined by what research internship I end up with next year.

So it dawned on me today, that I am unlikely to make a decent living wage or get out of catering/retail hell without doing some more education.
I am seriously considering teaching in the 11-16 year old bracket. For this, I need some kind of part time or evening Access course, or Foundation Degree and a course in the local area or by correspondence course, as I don't want to move. Then I would have to do a degree, then a PGCE.
Subjects I would consider in ranking order-
English Literature/Language.
Religious Studies.
French. (it's a stretch, that one, but I was bloody good at it at school)
Environmental Science (but that would have to be 16-19 age)
I am waiting on a callback from the Open University and will be looking into my options.

This would be amusing as I describe myself as an apathetic agnostic. I cannot prove the existence of deity either way and I frankly don't give a shit. Environmental Science is my wildcard, and would take far longer to get to teach.

French teachers are in pretty high demand, as there is a shortage and it's the most commonly taught language, but that would mean a bunch of refresher courses and getting into that path of study looks a lot more complicated, but to be honest if I couldn't get into teaching with an English Lit and PGCE, well retail management is higher up the pay and food chain than I am now, so it wouldn't be much of a loss.
Actually, looking at the government website, there is nothing relating to English teachers. :( I guess it's a popular subject at degree level and most of what you can do with it IS teaching. Balls. That's that one dropped down the ranking, even though I would really get off on the degree...
Environmental Science is up there as a degree that can lead to science teaching. (it just went higher up the list.)- Science teachers are in shortage at the moment. Add to this the impending doom of running out of fossil fuels and private industry might be more receptive by the time I actually graduate.
For foreign language teaching it suggests you learn two languages, at least one European, and it helps if you learn a language used by immigrant families. I'd probably choose the second language as Mandarin, or Polish. Actually I'd more likely choose Polish. With the large Polish community in this country being a quite audible if not visible minority it would be good. Hell even learning Polish to A-level might help if I decided to teach in a lower age bracket. This could be lucrative, hold good chances of work in the private sector if teaching is a no-go, but is looking like way longer period of study.
however, Religious Studies, interestingly enough will let you take an Anthropology (I assume they mean cultural, rather than biological) degree, and that's another subject I have expressed an interest in doing at that level in the past. I think that one can also be done at a local Uni.
In the Design and Technology category you can even have a degree in Jewellery, so maybe add that to my bucket o'choices of subjects to teach, and before I went mad I was looking at jewellery degree level courses. The big disadvantage would be having to move, as jewellery degree courses are not common.
There seems to be a common thread though. The most in-demand subjects don't seem to be local to study, and the local to study isn't in as much demand.
I suspect you would do very well with French, any science, and any socio/anthro angle.
I have added a Spanish class. I know that five classes is too many, but the homework will be really easy and it fills up an otherwise unused chunk of time on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.

After having a poke around the local Uni's websites it looks like Anthropology BSc going onto a PGCE in Religious Studies may be my primary choice (I'd need to check which Access diploma I would need) which is based at Southampton Uni, with Environmental Science BSc as my second choice, leading to a Science teaching PGCE (although getting my Access diploma in Science may be a bit of an ask locally) which is at Bournemouth Uni. The Bournemouth Uni website seems very mature student friendly, the Southampton one, not so much.

There are some lecturers who seem to view students as getting in the way of being a lecturer, or that they have to make life as miserable as possible for the students who dare to try and take their class. It boggles me, but I guess you get people like that all over.

Not for a lack of material or knowledge, but the feeling that the majority of the class could give two-shits about what I'm talking about and are just waiting for it to be over/are dreading their turn up here. Clearly it depends on the group of people/ages/etc., but like you said, 30 minutes seems extreme for a bunch of freshman. I know public speaking is/can be a useful skill, but I have a hard enough time relating to people in a comfortable setting, never mind standing in front of a bunch of relative strangers babbling about something or another for 20-30 minutes straight. I just plan to hopefully never be in a position that requires much, if any, public speaking.

What's the age demographic for the course? Is it mostly traditional students or adults in a continuing ed program? The reason I ask is the professor could feel that adult students may be able to present lesson plans effectively at the 100 level. I've had to do it at the 300/400 level, but NOT in a freshman level class. That just seems like a good way to put students on the spot that aren't ready for it yet. It takes time to develop and understand how college level courses work, you can't just get up there and BS your way through an hour. I've had to give a couple "student lectures" this semester already. It's very testing.

I'm the oldest in the class by ten years, and have twenty on most of them, easy. A friend of mine is taking the same class on a different campus with a different instructor and her homework has been much closer to the expectations I had for the class; reading the books, writing essays, and having discussion time. It's not that it's easy, it's just that it's appropriate to their skill level and preparing them for the next courses in the series.
I think the fact that 3/4 of the class dropped is a pretty good illustration of how level-appropriate my teacher's approach is. The thing is, if she could get over herself and teach to the students she has instead of the students she wishes she had, she could be an excellent teacher, and possibly even build the track record to apply for a University position. That's never going to happen the way she's teaching now.
I'm really looking forward to next term already. I did a much better job of scoping out my instructors this time so I shouldn't have any duds.
I took my math final this morning and I think it went well. I got a little hung up on finding the variables for an equation with the variables in fractions on both sides (total piece of cake, I just brain farted), but I should have made up for it with one of the extra credit questions.
I then went and paid for my GED, which I've been putting off. And now I am about to drive out to SE to give my books to my accountant and hopefully get a fat tax refund.
I've been researching grad programs and it looks like the best current option for my interests is the epidemiology MPH at OHSU. I am disappointed in the utter lack of a medical anthropology program anywhere in the Portland area, but things could change in three years. AND, OHSU also has what looks like a pretty killer behavioral neuroscience PhD program. So, for now I am planning on a chemistry (or biochem) major/sociology minor and then applying at OHSU, but I also have to look into how well the epidemiology program dovetails with the neuroscience program because there might be a better route for me.
I have been very productive and am doing exactly what I should be doing, and all that's missing is someone to be proud of me.

I looked into it a bit more and while it's not where the funding is, they also do cognitive neuroscience research, which is what I'm interested in. I have at least another three years and lots of time to familiarize myself with their programs and researchers, so that's a good thing! It's sounding like I will have a ton of support and really good contacts through the LSAMP program at PSU, so connecting with the right people and programs will be greatly facilitated. Basically, once my prerequisites are out of the way I need to focus on chemistry, sociology, and Spanish.

It turned out good, the class was GREAT. Better than I had any concept of. I am so happy right now! There are still three internship spots open for this summer and the coordinator urged me to apply, so I drew up a resume and just need to write a short essay about my goals.

And, I just found a job posting for an Assistant Professor of Applied Anthropology at PSU, seeking a specialist in Medical Anthropology to start in September 2012. Since they already have one medical anthropologist, it's starting to sound like they MIGHT be putting together the faculty to bring that program back.

I would say stats first and then calculus (I suggest this as the person who did both at once because she hates herself.)
I think that's what I'm going to do. I have no desire to take stats and calc at the same time, and I want to start taking chemistry next term.
I am now experiencing a quandary because I only need 45 more credits for my transfer degree, but I don't want to take a break from math and I'm done with math requirements next term. I think it'll work out just fine because I'm dual enrolled, but I need to talk to an advisor.
Scheduling is sure starting to be a pain in the ass.
A good advisor is the best thing in the world.
(And thank you for spelling "advisor" the way I do. Every time I see "adviser" it just looks wrong, even though I know it's correct. Apparently both are correct. Goddamnit, English! STOP!)

Where I work, the official business/job title in the payroll system, on the intranet, etc. is HR Advisor. We have ONE pain in the ass who spells it "Adviser" in her email signature and it looks fucking wrong, no matter how many times I tell myself it's technically correct. But I hate emailing her because her signature sends me into fits of grammatical rage even though it shouldn't.
