Title: More Copyright Fun: Lady Gaga banned from Youtube for showing her own concert.

http://digitallife.today.com/_news/2011/07/14/7082873-lady-gaga-is-banned-from-youtube

QuoteIf you're in the mood to watch some Lady Gaga music videos right now, you'll have to search around a bit because the singer's official YouTube account has been suspended. The reason? Multiple or severe violations of the video-sharing site's copyright policy.

There aren't any details about exactly what Lady Gaga did to violate these copyright policies, but Time Out Tokyo suggests that it may be related to footage from a live performance:

She posted footage from her recent appearance on the Fuji TV show SMAP x SMAP. The ten-minute performance featured a medley of songs from her new album, Born This Way, laced with Japan-themed ad libs that we're pretty much certain Shingo Katori didn't understand.

I love this shit.  She doesn't have the rights to post 10 minutes of her own material.   :lulz:

Another possibility is that she was making fun of Betty Ford's hair, while they're in the middle of burying the old bat.

It does call into question, however, if Gaga is indeed the actual copyright holder for her music.

She apparenly owns the music, but not the rights to the live concert footage.

This is just fucking silly.

In her place I'd revoke SMAPXSMAP's rights to use her music.  Although that might involve breaking a contract that's not worth breaking.

In her place, I'd organize a boycott against them.

Why?

because the smallprint inevitably relocates them to parties that had nothing to do with the production of said IP. But because those magic words are spelled out and signed the artist has no recourse. In retrospect It's more than just IP, it's copyright, it's management, it's the whole fucking industrial approach to art ... yeah, fuckit, just ignore me - on a hobby horse again

This is why we have lawyers.  For reading the small print.

QuoteHere, take my Prada pants. Fuck it. Let us do our real jobs. And those of us addicted to celebrity because we have nothing else to give will fade away. And those of us addicted to celebrity because it was there will find a better, purer way to live.

Courtney Love - my new personal hero (for at least the next 15 mins)

And I'll explain further why I like it. I like it, because if artists really do live off tips, I want to tip them well, and in a way that they will actually get it. Hell, if record companies are being piece of shits, I'd rather pirate an album and send the artist money through paypal or something. I have no qualms about paying for music, as long as that money goes to the musician.

And Courtney Love did a pretty damn good job of selling herself in her own words in that article, without any fucking record company promotions, because it makes /me/ want to check out her music.

I don't like a lot of her shit, she's a bit too - off the deep end - for me but this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3dWBLoU--E) is right up in my all time top 20

Courtney Love's music is almost as terrible as her personality. She's probably the worst person ever, though she's still spot-on in alot of that article.

I also follow the "if I like it I'll find a way to get the artists some of my money" rationalization for pirating music. But I do follow through; I'll buy a band's t-shirt direct from their website and/or see them live if I have the chance, both of which put FAR more money in their pockets than buying a CD. One flaw in that line of thinking, though, is that it excludes all the people who work in the music industry and aren't artists. That $15 for a CD doesn't just go to fattening Tommy Mottola's or David Geffen's pockets, it also goes to the audio engineers, producers, graphic artists, etc. who are instrumental in any given band's finished product.

I gotta say, there is nothing in this statement I disagree with.

Which is why fee-for-service models are better than pyramid schemes IMO.
