Title: Morality, II of V
Post by: The Good Reverend Roger on February 20, 2013, 06:08:12 PM
Our country is tough on crime, no matter what the fringe yahoos at Fox or CNN might tell you.  Anyone who has seen the inside of a felony courtroom knows this.  Anyone who has seen the insane overcrowding of a private prison also knows that prison time isn't a Goddamn vacation, no matter what your cousin Bubba's take on the matter might be, even if he got his information from Rush Limbaugh AND Neil Boortz.

Thing is, we're throwing all the wrong people into prison.  Petty theft for survival gets you 2 years in the joint.  That being the case, how high should we build the gallows for a rich man who steals for greed?

The fact that an 18 year old kid can be thrown into one of these mini-hells for fading a car stereo, while the people that robbed the WHOLE WORLD from 1995-2007 get "put in charge of the recovery" isn't just monstrous...It's a parody.  A sick joke.  It's Poe's Law subjected to Poe's Law.

The fact that some poor Mexican looking for enough work to LIVE is the national bogeyman, while people like Joe Cassano and John Schnatter and Tony Hayward not only walk free, but are lauded by people like Rand Paul and the entire right-wing press is laughable in the darkest possible way.

The fact that Black people consistently receive harsher sentences than Whites for every type of conviction also speaks for itself.

FACT:  There is one law for the poor, and no law for the rich.  We have essentially regressed to the turn of the last century.  Well done, America.

Or Kill Me.

There really isn't much to say.  You nailed it in one.

I guess... I guess that it really makes you realize that this is a nation of "laws" rather than one of "justice".  Or something.

Question: When, in the history of social primates, has it ever been any different?

Other than that then, yeah. I agree with you but to me it's always been this way since we climbed out the trees and the ape with the meanest right hook claimed the best spot in the cave. Part of the reason I never bought into the whole law-thing in the first place. There's always been those who are "above the law". Nowadays this works because they own the people who enforce and dictate it. Justice is a fairy tale, to keep people in line. The truth is we're slaves. The best we can achieve is to not get caught. That's my goal. Justice can go fuck itself.
