Title: market research
Post by: tyrannosaurus vex on May 16, 2010, 09:49:56 PM
would anybody on this awful board be interested in a social networking type site for PD users? you know, blogs, 'activity stream' type of shit, sharing pictures and mp3s or whatever, etc...

How would it improve on this message board format, exactly?

I can't really say. I'm not exactly advocating it, I just noticed it was a possibility. It could make sharing media easier, maybe.

Will it allow me to send mp3s of my own flatulence to newbies?

That's kind of a deal breaker.

Only if it is called Spagbook and allows me to create silly groups to join that I will not participate in and post 300 pictures of my cat.

funny you should mention it, I've actually been experimenting with elgg, an open source social networking platform. The advantage of using elgg is that it's free, and if we find some php coders, we can customize it as we'd like.

I've long thought of setting up a "discordian" social networking site, oriented around organizing and planning projects & activities. Let me know if you want to collaborate on this.

also, vex, we require you to host a Discordian URL-shortener on your disc0rd.com domain.

because, you know, it's short.

and all the cool kids have an URL shortener.

Findings so Far:

Got "groups" established for HIMEOBS, WOMP, and Intermittens with various media uploaded (WOMP faces, Intermittens 1-7, etc). Looks like this could be a good venue for collaboration (wiki-style) since it can be broken into projects and projects can be created/destroyed pretty easily.

Blogs are working but I don't have much interest in that feature.

Definitely not a replacement for the kind of energy that can be generated on this forum, but it would allow ongoing projects to be more focused and easier to browse through. Also allows for easier organization of media items like pdfs/pictures, and keeps them from getting lost somewhere in a 400 page thread.

cwyohba was just a random ftp space with no administrative interface, and it only got lost because i lost the ability/motivation to maintain that account. spagbook on the other hand is a full site with administrative/backup utilities, and its hosting account is under the same master account i use for a number of other personal projects. i can also back up everything that's uploaded separately as it isn't locked in a database, it's just files that get linked to. so it's stable and reliable. i wouldn't worry about it.

So how's the social network thing going now?

I should sign up, I guess (or did you keep accounts from previous sites you did, cause then I might still have one)

As I just thought, it's too bad the WOMP-cave is gone ... maybe we can revive that in this social network thingy. I just saw you already creoted a group for WOMP?
Title: Re: market research
Post by: tyrannosaurus vex on June 18, 2010, 09:44:01 PM
There's a WOMP group. The social network itself is pretty much crawling along at just below a snail's pace due to everybody wanting to see results without investing any effort. Including myself.

The Internet is a terrible place to Get Things Done™.

I wonder if it'd be possible to layer some of this on top of the forum itself?  E.g. the last posts of the user as a status update feed, public comments feeding back into the board, and non-public comments visible only to "friends", rather than cluttering up the board.

Implementation would almost certainly be easier than getting consensus on whether it was a good idea or not.  Or maybe I'm being too cynical?   ;)

In my mind, you'd want to achieve the following:

There is no user account at spagbook for any of your names. "Doktor_Howl" is unavailable due to a database fuckup months ago when you originally tried to register and I had a retarded plugin installed that blew up and created an entry for that name without creating the actual user account. Now, why was I expected to find being told I have no balls "funny" from someone I've barely gotten along with?

If you're looking for an admisison, I guess I'll freely admit to thinking we were "friends" enough to give a little meanspirited banter with no real enmity intended. But if you're still on about smearing my name, I'll just pack up and go back to the real world, and quit trying and failing to get a real project moving forward.

So long and thanks for nothing, Discordia.

This is no century for cowards.  I rather suspect you won't have too many laughs over the next few years.

It's not a matter of giving up on Discordia, it's a matter of giving up on trying to move Discordia forward in any tangible sense. Since Spagbook is the one angle I've got right now, and you're doing your best to discredit it (and me) in everyone else's eyes, and everybody around here has a lot more respect for you than for me, it doesn't really do me much good to keep pushing on.

Okay, just got off the phone.  I have no reason to believe that Vexation was misusing my moniker, other than a badly worded "joke" on his part.

You can reasonably assume that your PI is safe at Spagbook, at least as far as I can tell.

Oh, okay.  Now I get to be your excuse for quitting your project.  Why didn't you just say so from the beginning?

We could have just come to an agreement, without all this hollering and carrying on.  You could just tell everyone I wrecked your dream, and I could maybe give an evil or maniacal laugh, and you get to stop trying with your "self esteem" - or what passes for it, these days - intact.

Okay, just let me know if I'm still your excuse for quitting, so I'll know to laugh maniacally when people ask me why I did it.

No, I rethought, and you're my excuse to keep going now.

on a completely different note, Vex, your signature image is too wide. I'm viewing the forum on a 1024px wide screen and together with the avatars on the left it's causing a horizontal scrollbar to appear which sucks. can you shave offf a little?

Have you wrenched my moniker loose from the intertubes?  I'm going to try regging again, if you have.

The db still had the glitch so it won't allow new registrations as Doktor_Howl, but I force-created your user. Your details should be in your email.

Surprisingly, I am not a complete idiot, nor am I using Windows... it's apple+D for me. There seems to be something wrong (again) with my browser... I can bookmark it to my "forums" folder, but when I try to bookmark it to my "social networking" folder nothing happens.

I think I've identified your problem.

spagbook.com is dead

which, of course, means that spagbook.com is not dead. just changed formats, so now it actually works, as opposed to being a heaping pile of shit with more bugs than one of Kai's experiments. this is the good news.

the bad news is that i am not a master database expert, nor do i have the money to hire one, so this platform change means nobody's user account has been transferred and everyone has to start all over again. which won't be hard, since there wasn't much activity anyway.

so this is not an announcement in order to get everyone to come check it out, more of a notice for people who might care.
