MysticWicks endorsement: ""Oooh, I'm a Discordian! I can do whatever I want! Which means I can just SAY I'm a pagan but I never bother doing rituals or studying any kind of sacred texts or developing a relationship with deity, etc! I can go around and not be Christian, but I won't quite be anything else either because I just can't commit and I can't be ARSED to commit!"

The global trend is toward the poor getting less poor...

Are you sure? I'd hope so, but it doesnt seem that way, where do you derive this from?

Might be an appropriate time to differentiate on relative inequality vs absolute or something. I don't know what is the good metric to even use here. For all I know being a farmer is awesome. Though probably not.

I don't know how to feel about this.

It's mostly a coincidence. Got caught in a blender outside the context of the forum.

yeah proprietary formats ended up being pretty expensive. Not everybody wants to use adobe flash as the industry standard. Over at the publisher's office, a LOT of my job involves trying to make assets developed in a proprietary format like flash usable today.

HTML5 is an "Open Code" format - and thank god, it is slowly replacing Flash entirely. If you develop with HTML5, your app can work on any mobile device. And I think this is a general trend - the less proprietary and protected formats you use, the easier it is to develop. Open source, open code, creative commons, public domain... these constructs make it easier to develop ideas. They take the idea out of the individual's control and expose them to the power of the crowd. It's not about the team who invented HTML5 making any money.

The World Wide Web Consortium doesn't own html5 in the same way adobe owns flash. They don't even have a certification program! "The W3C has decided, for now, that it is not suitable to start such a program owing to the risk of creating more drawbacks for the community than benefits."1

That says it all right there - tighter control means less access. Less access means less community.

Flash is an unholy abomination and regardless of everything needs to leave. That said sometimes I worry that our near infinite bit flipping entertainment machines are too good at copying and we have created a situation that "Only a few marketable marinetes get a sliver of the pie while the rest fight for the stale crumbs on the floor" to quote someone more artsy than me. What we need is IP farmers markets, but totally not like the app store.

Why the fuck would anyone want to "sell discordia" to others? Isn't Discordia a weapon used to reduce your enemies to a smouldering heap of ruined humanity, or am I doing it wrong?  :?

You can't do it wrong.

My Discordia is different from your Discordia which is different from Hoop's Discordia.  The only difference is that my Discordia is inherently superior to both of yours, on account of it's MINE and I really like and approve of me.

Bullshit! My discordia contains 3 of the most dangerous transfats and a volume knob that goes up to 12.  My discordia does 0-60 in less than 2 secs and will not slow back down, even on impact. My discordia is mutagenic, has no known antigen and is available through over 100 infection vectors, including airborne, anal and bluetooth. My discordia has no known melting point and becomes violent at room temperature. My discordia has a subtle bouquet, reminiscent of VX, with a subtle hint of Zyklon-B. My discordia is unbeaten in over twenty olympic events and holds Guinness world records for most deadly biohazard, highest altitude unmanned flight and most people ever fit inside a Mini Cooper.

Your discordia is a pale imitation mine!  :argh!:

My Discordia gets attacked by hornets on a more or less regular basis.  My Discordia doesn't hit the brakes in Reddington Pass.  My Discordia is up for any program.  My Discordia is rather fetching.  My Discordia brings all the boys to the yard.  My Discordia does its little turn on the catwalk.  On the catwalk, yeah.  My Discordia dances, despite having no skill or aptitude for said dancing.  My Discordia enrages the Mike.

My Discordia infected Madagascar.

Game, set, match.  Bitches.

Madagascar, took a non-lethal dose. Then afterwards the remaining infected were used to do experiments on until a superior super strand was isolated. After much discussion the government couldn't even come up with a good name for the super strand. The first (second wave) victim named it after his favorite band and it stuck.

A cold wind passes through the server room. Somebody opened up the door! It's been ages since the door has been open. I had forgotten what a refreshing breeze was or that the door could be open. Why was the server room so cold? Quite simply if left too long to compute eventually the cpu heats up. Simply a result of the laws of thermodynamics. Thankfully I had dutifully spent years learning these things so I could be ready. Ready for what? I don't know. I must have forgotten.

In the distance I hear "Is anyone in here?". Instinctively I start moving towards the sound. My heartbeats it's something new. I start moving faster but still silent as a ghost. Then I hear it a harrowing clunk. The door closed again.

"I am here" I yell into the darkness. Maybe I should have used my voice earlier. Next time. Next time. Til then I guess I must wait I guess. I stare at the blinking lights of the racks of hardware. Hopefully that will help drown things out til next time. Must pass the time, but mustn't forget. Blink, blink. It's not helping. A song starts playing in my head. "This is the song that never ends, yes it goes on and on my friends," it was that song from lamb chops. Shiver. Why doesn't it stop? Mustn't forget. This server room is practically a butcher's store room. My head stings from the thought, that's not helping. "This is the song that never ends, yes it goes on and on my friends". Mustn't forget.

Obama doesn't know what hes doing. Not dealing with holder, selectively choosing which laws to enforce etc. Our courts are out of control and the judges don't know computers.

Computers are just so damn complex and those who don't understand the human element of things are more likely to be good at computing. Women in IT would be nice though its currently infested with creeps and so nobody feels like cleaning house.

Thank god we are mortals. Also eventually by pure luck the inbreeding would sort itself out. The whole doctor who / merlin thing of going backwards thing is a great way to pull the guilt strings.

I've read about this shit for years but wait for the video sequences around 12:30. Actually seeing a visualisation of what's going on during replication and factory biological production is fucking stunning. RNA is no longer a squiggly diagram in a book!

I'm starting to get scared simply because I'm happy with how awesome the fucking stuff we have now is. Even just a smart phone really

It's supposed to be "I curse you to a bubble of meaningless nothing." Though the second part is all bad things, those are dramatic bad things, and fucknuts does not even deserve negative excitement.

Care to explain the resentment?

Well it looks like if my son can force himself to slow down and actually concentrate on his math he'll be fine. Worked with him today on the 3 or 4 pages he had for homework and he only threw a tantrum once (he really doesn't like it if he tries something twice and still has it wrong) so it's improvement.

I'm sure the idea of not being able to go on the class trip in May if he doesn't have at least a C is helping motivate him some too.

Bless his lonely heart, the nihilist just wants some friends.

There would probably have been hope if he was 12. I see a lost cause here.

I think he's too busy blaming women for his virginity and blacks for his unemployment.

I have cold issues of late so may have a kindered spirit with him for like 1/2 sec before it turns to just bleh.

We make most of our decisions based on some kind of social pressure or larger societal obligation as it is.

Giving up control like that, and following through is probably as good for people as it is difficult. An interesting idea.

I would wager the end results would leave people as satisfied, if not moreso, with their lives as when they make their own choices. Plus, if it goes wrong, you have a clear path to lay the blame.

I am very indecisive, myself. Often doing things that limit my options leave me happier because I make the most of what I got. When a whole universe of options are available I freeze up.

Yea I agree here though you always need to leave open the option to look for more options.

Like, the ENTIRE WORLD is 100% aware that everyone is giving Russia shit over the homosexuality issue. It's on the news. People think it's awesome and are having a grand old time giving Russia the middle finger.

Is it still a conspiracy when a plurality of the civilized world is on board and actively participating?

I forgot the definition of a conspiracy again. This is a interesting discourse though, and nihilists are the best at hard hitting arguments.
