After you first said they were wiped out, you were surprised when when I told you the real population numbers.  But now you're doubling down, and pretending that "wiped out" means something other than "destroyed completely".  Or does "wiped out" have a different connotation in your dialect of English?  Maybe next time say "the population was devastated" instead.

Well, at least you admit to being in error in two out of three cases.

The bottom line is the Canadian government made a wholly inadequate token gesture and then had to be forced via legal means to meet its obligation, which I saw as a recent development based on the news story from last week.

That is arguably true.  Perhaps you understand why this is a sensitive issue domestically, and why misinformation might provoke a reaction?

Your specific claims have been that the indigenous were wiped out; that wrongdoing wasn't acknowledged until five years ago; and that the apology was disjoint from any attempt at reparation, adequate or otherwise.

Those claims were false.

I know a fair amount of indigenous people from the Kettle Point reservation, but never heard a single one ever mention receiving any reparation payments… maybe they just don’t talk about it to me, since… you know. But some of the houses there sure don’t look like they are getting much from the government.

Those are the "Common Experience Payments" in the link I posted.  I wouldn't be surprised if they weren't enough to noticeably improve conditions for the recipients; I was just snapping back at Faust's "as long as there is absolutely no talk of reparation" comment.

There are plenty of real criticisms to be levied at Canada's treatment of the indigenous, without making up new ones.

Fair, wasnt it was only in the last 5 years they acknowledged the schools taking native American kids, changing their names and completely hiding their heritage, not to mention lots and lots of them died. But they have taken an official stance on that now accepting wrongdoing (as long as there is absolutely no talk of reparation)

What on earth are you talking about?  Survivors of residential schools have been eligible for reparation payments since 2007.  Are you just making shit up, or did you read this in some British tabloid?

Apologies yeah I was reading a more reactionary take on it,Canada is gradually becoming more and more right wing and yes did wipe out the indigenous people.

Not to whitewash the atrocities committed, or anything, but there are 1.8 million indigenous living in Canada, about 5% of the population.  Their cultural history has been decimated, but they haven't been wiped out.

I'm not sure where you got that from.  Canada's rate of medical malpractice lawsuits is a fraction of the US, and the payouts are much lower.  We have more in common with Europe.  Who are you comparing us to?

After people make a decision, they have a predisposition to believing it was the right one (also see: Sunk Cost Fallacy; Brand Loyalty).  I took the road less traveled by, which, in hindsight, was the correct choice, and proves my intellectual and moral superiority.

This type of bias is often present even when the person didn't actively make a decision, and their state is a result of external factors, or an accident of birth (My food preference/skin colour is superior to your food preference/skin colour).

Naturally, this extends to the country of one's birth.  On average, the citizens will show a natural tendency to construct and amplify a narrative that "this" is the best country in which to live, and other countries' way of doing things is evil/wrong/backward/barbaric/inefficient.

If a country's narrative is broadcast widely enough, and loudly enough, they attract immigrants.

I don't know where I'm going with this.

If I didn't know these two so well, I'd assume that someone strapped them to a chair in front of a Tucker Carlson show (he has gone from screeching about this to "liberating Canada" in the last few days).

Yeah, I was thinking this has the same vibe as the American rhetoric about how socialized health care leads to "DEATH PANELS".

Then also imagine it through the pov of a trans person who is unable to receive healthcare if they also classify transness as a mental illness.

Sorry, I'm not getting it.

Homelessness isn't a disease.  If I were homeless, I'd be more worried about the police picking me up, and dumping me outside the city so I could freeze to death.  Emergency room staff suggesting I might be better off dead wouldn't be high on my list of concerns.

If someone doesn't qualify for healthcare, then they don't qualify for MAID, either.  Being cut off from healthcare because of being trans would seem to be a different problem.

The point of MAID is that severely and untreatably ill persons should be allowed to end their lives with the assistance of medical personnel, without said medical personnel being charged with murder.  I think extending that to include mental illness is a bit doubtful, but if someone doesn't qualify as mentally competent, they're not eligible, regardless.

It's about direction of travel, you know? Ten years ago I thought things were going well here. I move somewhere that is engaging in eugenics and it turns out they decide to expand that over the next ten years and suddenly it includes me, well, gee, my face will be red.

This may just be a point of terminology, but euthanasia and eugenics aren't the same thing.  If you want to accuse Canada of eugenics, look into our history of forced sterilizations.  Euthanasia is supposed to be humanitarian; eugenics never is.

As it's currently structured, MAID doesn't seem to me to be particularly dangerous.  The patient can't be pressured into it, and must find their living conditions unbearable.

Some snipped eligibility requirements:

• be at least 18 years old and mentally competent. This means being capable of making health care decisions for yourself.
• have a serious illness, disease or disability (excluding a mental illness until March 17, 2023)
• be in an advanced state of decline that cannot be reversed
• experience unbearable physical or mental suffering from your illness, disease, disability or state of decline that cannot be relieved under conditions that you consider acceptable
• make a voluntary request for MAID that is not the result of outside pressure or influence
• give informed consent to receive MAID

Requirements for independent witnesses to the request:

To be considered independent means that the witness cannot:

• benefit from your death
• be an owner or operator of a health care facility where you live or are receiving care
• be an unpaid caregiver

Why, what have you been hearing?

Domestically, there were reports that a Veteran's Affairs caseworker was inappropriately recommending MAID to certain veterans (the employee was fired as a result).  And making MAID available for persons suffering from mental disorders is controversial, to say the least.  But, I'm not sure if that should be a basis for deciding to immigrate or not.

Setting that aside, Canada's medical system is heavily overloaded right now, which might be a reason not to move here, especially if you're in less than perfect health.  It's almost impossible to find a GP in many areas, and there were recently two cases of women in Nova Scotia dying while waiting for treatment in emergency rooms.
