Here's a 3D sacred chao I rustled up today:
Still messing with lighting, textures and stuff. This is a low resolution render so it could be a lot more realistic.
I like the reflection in the apple. What about a bit of reflection on the tiled floor too?
That's awesome! That apple is so shiny, I want to have sex with it.

Yeah x00xe, I knew you'd ask for excessive raytracing. :D

Pity it doesn't really make much of a difference. I changed the texture of the floor a little, gonna pimp that out later. Changed the texture of the drapes but I turned the transparency down too much before the final render. That's annoying because the cloth looked pretty realistic before that.
xs.to uploads are fubar at the minute, so I found a new image hosting site: www.imagechicken.com. Its better than imageshack with its evil thumbnail limitation.
This is excellent work.
What are you using? (My school focuses on Maya and stuff like ZBrush)

I'm using blender (www.blender.org (http://www.blender.org)) for this, it's the only 3D tool that doesn't profit from making its features impossible to learn without paying top dollar for books. Since Autodesk bought Maya I've lost all love for that once kickass piece of software. It's a shame, Maya used to be my hot topic for wooing artists.
I'm thinking of running these models through yafray (http://yafray.org/ (http://yafray.org/)) or LuxRender (http://www.luxrender.net/ (http://www.luxrender.net/)) but they take forever. Yafray is generally slow for what it does (which will be sorted out soon). LuxRender is an unbiased raytracer so it simulates billions of photons which will probably take 3 days to draw maybe 50% of the first image.
Update.

After very nearly crashing my machine, I decided that upping the resolution of the apple wasn't a solution for applying writing. This is using bumpmaps which don't use 1GB of RAM and 2GB of virtual memory within 2 seconds. Now the leaf needs veins.
THE BLACK LODGE!!!!!

i liked the checkered black/white better, for contrast.
but you should use that stripey zig-zag floor pattern they have in Twin Peaks!!!

Have you taken a look at the Intermittens project?
thankyou, and nope.
is it me or is the chao's reflection in the wrong place? [shouldnt happen with a raytracer, right??]

That's looking good. Now to purge the plastic-like curtains of their specular shading?

That's what I thought while it was rendering. I checked, it is in the right place. It's just the wonky angle I put the camera at which makes the distance between the chao and the floor deceiving.

I know, I stupidly moved two lights really close to the chao for this render and forgot to compensate on the curtains texturing. I'm a little reticent about perfecting this scene because I have no idea how to import the new Kallisti embossed apple. I want to recreate the curtains with a higher resolution cloth sim so I may as well start from scratch.

Would you be interested in making anything for an Intermittens issue?

I could do, it seems that I'm having a creative outburst right now which is unusual. I'm happy to create something random, or anything you guys request (within reasonable limits).
Here's my first test render with a totally new environment. The cloth isn't as ruffled up as I'd like it to be, but I got fed up of rerunning the cloth simulation after the tenth time. I forgot to rotate the floor 45 degrees and I finally sorted the specular on the curtains XooXe. Shame I forgot to texture it.
Finally, I can see what the embossed writing looks like reflecting the floor:
You can't see it in this render, but the apple leaf has rudimentary veins. :D
how about applying a vertically ridged bumpmap to the cloth? to make it sort of corduroy-looking?

Or will that take eleventybillion years to render?

Uhm, can i put in a request for a 1024x768? Please?
And it looks really good, btw :)
Here's two wallpapers: Cramulus Res - 1680x1050 (http://www.imagechicken.com/uploads/1229856237034933600.jpg) & BDSimp Res - 1024x768 (http://www.imagechicken.com/uploads/1229856205094450700.jpg).
It took 5 hours 35 minutes to draw, so not long then. :)
700 x 437 pixels
hmmm... looks like imagechicken scaled that first one down a bit... :-(

Hey, Cynical;

All the stuff I post in this thread is completely public domain / kopyleft. Eventually the blender files will be posted up too. Use this stuff for whatever you want.

Yeah, and it used a poor quality jpeg compression on it too. I've crossed over to the photobucket darkside:
1024x768 (http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww116/cycid/bg_1024x768.jpg) & 1680x1050 (http://i711.photobucket.com/albums/ww116/cycid/bg_1680x1050.jpg).

This is a test render using Luxrender which is one of those evil unbiased raytracers that doesn't simplify anything. It took 16 hours and 16 minutes to look like this and it still wasn't finished. I need to buy about 4GB of extra RAM if I'm going to keep using this because 1GB isn't handling the insanity. Luxrender destroys my PC for about 15 minutes while it's starting up and shutting down!
I said it before and I'll say it again.
I want to have sex with that apple.
These are beautiful!
(& maybe this is sacrilegious of me to say but I prefer hexagons to pentagons - I know there's the 5 bit thing & all but I associate the pentagon with, well, the Pentagon - & the thing always looks lopsided to me)
But Holy Fuck I do love those dimensional renderings! :)
the lopsidedness is part of the point of it, for me.
I'd also have sex with the apple, as well as the pentagon, yin-yangy thing, the curtains, and would dry hump the floor.

I'll have to second that. It's an almost flawless representation of my rendering studio. Minus the coffee serving midgets of course.
Back on topic though. There's been a lot more workings happening on the 3D chao. After many hours of tireless slaving over emulating the gold shader from Luxrender in blender, here's what it looks like now. (Yes, there was no good gold shaders available on the internet for blender).
This was rendered as a test, it turned out OK. Should have turned the lights up a little though.
Here is the finished shader with a white sky lighting everything up.
So now this means that I don't have to wait five days to see how it looks anymore. WOOHOO!
