Ok after reading Penumbrals moan that we just dont talk anymore... Thought Id suggest this.
The fair isle of Albion is in a frenzy of middle class book club style furtherence. Mainly due to a programme about herion that inexplicably had reading in it. Now being the king squid of bandwagon cuckoos. I thought we could set up a sort of forum based book club (no really, stop laughing). Someone picks a book (with at least a grain of discordian flavouring) and then we all read it and discuss it, the person who picks the book does a little schpeil as to why they picked it etc like a class presentation, then we add our comments or sumsuch.
What do you think?
I think it can work.....even on a discordian forum because it's what we're already doing on the profane dog. It's a great idea and I'm all for it.
King squid of bandwagon cuckoos? I love it.
sure, i can probably do it, that'd be fun.
Im down
Let's go.
bring it fan boy.
The Unadalterated Cat:
Terry Pratchett and Gary Joliffe
So how does this work?
Do we all go get the same book and read it so that we can have an intelligent discussion about it?
And do we agree on a date to begin?
Or not.
Ill go buy this today
Me too.
If I can find it at the one and only local bookstore.
Otherwise, I'll order it.
Later: My bookstore can't find this book to order it for me, and I can't even find it on Amazon.

Maybe that's because Trollax mispelled the title.
Try The Unadulterated Cat
Here it is at Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/075283715X/ref%3Dnosim/speculativefic05/103-1355672-2043019)
It does appear to be out of print and Amazon has only a few used copies (One is tres expensive.)
Bunch of used copies at MX bookfinder though. (http://www.bookfinder.com/search/?ac=sl&st=sl&qi=ho2cizcCQ6Yf1ZK6M.pbUO2Sric_2535623532_1:3:28)

ok i'm game butt i need to find these books at the library cause i'm a poor poor workingman....plus i got's to save cash fer a trip to new york city yeehaw.....going to the BIG city.. just checked nope this one they do not have....
Lets pick a book that everyone can find either at the library or the bookstore....although this one looks great.
the books I can join in are also limited. local bookstore has only a small amount of english books. and amazon or something over the internet is too slow.
So I won't be able to join every discussion.
one of my favourite books is Momo by Michael Ende
Well, shiny mecurial bubbles of unexpected joy, we have a cabal, whoop de woo.....
OK How bout a book a month, everyone suggest somthing and we can use that handy poll thing to decide on what we read. The book that chosen should have presentation or some such by the choosee and then we go off to our bedsits/caves/snowpits and digest the tree ghost. Come back and discuss...
My humble suggestion is "V." by ST. Thomas of Pynchon.
Widley available from paper merchants everywhere and truely a glorious fornication of the mind.
Yup, it seems that we do indeed have a book cabal.
Haven't read "V"yet, although I love Pynchon's work.
I second this suggestion, Maxwell.
Okay, I just ordered "V."
Cool.
If we all want to read it Ill do a post with 'why I chose this book' pose, and supply web links to sites with pretty diagrams and pictures of Mr Pynchon from his highschool days..
I like pretty diagrams, actually.
The bookstore just now called and said that my copy of "V." is in.
I can't wait to go pick it up.
ohhhh.... Pynchon......
ultra dense prose that takes forever to read....
like Dennis Miller at 78 rpm.....
ohhh..... my head is aching already....
ohhh............................
Zombies love dense prose.......I really like his work.
S'not all dense prose... theres quite a few musical numbers.
Cool.....do I get to sing along?
Just got the book....woohoo.
i looked for the terry pratchett cat book, but couldn't find it at my store. they'll order it.
today i bought Small Gods and the Color of Magic (both by pratchett). I also bought Siddharta by herman hesse- i hear that it's good.
I'm about halfway through with "V."
Is anyone else reading it? If not, that's okay cuz the book is still cool.
Personally, I'd suggest Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman (if only because it's what I'm actually reading at the moment :P), but it seems like Bella is going for V.
Another suggestion from me would be The Athenian Murders (//www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0374106770/qid=1088881962/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl14/104-3086916-6555914?v=glance&s=books&n=507846) by Jose Carlos Somoza. A lovely mind-fuck book in a greek setting. I can't reveal anything about the book, as that would spoil it, just believe when I say that, not only is there more than meets the eye...there's ALOT more.
QuoteWhat's that? You're surprised? Is it because, against all logic, I am burning my hand?!
It also messed up the way I read books like how Memento messed up the way I watch movies and TV.
I'm all for reading anything by Neil Gamen. :P
But, yes...I'm going for "V." at the moment.
Mostly because once I had it in hand, I didn't have the patience to wait and see what everyone else wanted to read and discuss.
My dad says that we have copies lying around, by he doesn't know where.
My house probably has around 1000 books. About a half of those are about WWII or Ancient civilisation in some way or another.
We also live in quite a small place, so it gets crowded. Behind my computer there are 4 shelves full of books, and behind me there are 4 more. My computer table only has two books at the moment, both by Terry Pratchett (in fact, they're the only two Terry Pratchett books I own, Good Omens and Small Gods).
I librarian would either orgasm at the number of books in a private home, or have a heart attack at their utter lack of organisation.
Your house sounds about right to me. 8)
Books=riches.
The house I live in is really tiny and there are books everywhere.
There are twelve shelves of books in the living area and half the kitchen cupboards are stacked full of books.
My big old antique trunk that holds a couple of hundred more.
I have a lot of the classics, plus dark fantasy, mystery, ancient civilization, philosophy, art, psychology, the occult and magic.
I keep all the magic and tarot books in one spot because I need them for work.
The rest would give your imaginary librarian a second heart attack because they aren't organized at all.
When I was in grade school I told a teacher that we probably had
a 1000 books in our house. My teacher told me that nobody has
that many books in their home. (The American Educational System
at work.) Today, I easily have in excess of 5000 books. Even got
some stashed in the bedroom furniture.
I have a copy of V, somewhere. Maybe in this box over
here. Yeah, right in this box. No.Maybe in this box. No, these are the murder mysteries.
Hmmm. Agatha Christie. Haven't read anything by her in a while.Maybe I'll just sit down here for a while and...
IVE GOT A COPY OF V ASWELL SO I SHALL READ IT NOW VERITABLY QUICKLY KITSHELL SNITCHELL THE BOGEYED OGGLY HUMOUNCULOUS FISHY FASHY OF THE OLDEN WESTERN PROPHETS. BODISTRUS HOSANDRUS CUNSOLUS MONFUOUS VADANROUS.

Cool. Vordisstress, vaodandress, hissandris, bohandre.
Just finished another chapter of "V".
Have you had a chance to start reading it yet?
