Title: Election Night. Gimme My Fix.
Post by: The Good Reverend Roger on November 06, 2012, 04:02:32 PM
Well, it's election day today.  More to the point, tonight is election night, and that means Roger gets his jones on, bigtime.  3 TVs (Fox, CSPAN, MSNBC), so there's RWNs to the left of me, LWNs to the right, and boring-ass non-partisan monkeys in the middle.  5 laptops for talking smack with friends in Germany, Guam, and Okinawa.  Coffee will be on all night.

Some people drink at election parties, but not us.  We are serious about this shit, and only caffiene will do.  By wednesday morning, I'll be stuck to the easy chair, crusted in my own filth, like a junkie waking up with a needle in his arm.  Some people might be disgusted by that, but shut up.  I'm an addict, and I make no bones about it.

Bets will be made.  Butthurt will be had, especially if the house changes hands (unlikely) or the senate goes further democrat (likely).  But the REAL commotion will, of course, be the presidential race, which I am here and now stating will go to Obama with 300-308 electoral votes.  Nate, if you let me down, you bastard, I will have your guts for garters.

Anyway, no matter who wins, we'll be treated to two supposedly grown men in full election rut.  Their eyes will be squinted, and they will speak nothing but gibberish.  And THAT, my friends, is the real payoff...Watching two alleged homo sapiens act like howler monkeys.

Keep your football, your baseball, and your basketball.  Enjoy them.  But leave me and my election alone together.  We have something special, something we can't explain to those not in love.

Up the Revolution, Gasbags,
Roger

It is my favorite sport. Like the Olympics, it can only happen every four years. Unless you count mid-terms and the Winter Olympics, which.. meh.

I'm just looking forward to slapping the "Don't blame me, I voted for Nixon" sticker on my car tomorrow.

Voting machines in Ohio are already blowing up.
Also, Fox says TEH BLACK PANTHERS ARE GUARDING POLLS IN PHILLY.
And, of course, AZ and TX have their cops out and about looking for UN election monitors to beat up.

The Daily Beast (http://www.havingtroublevoting.com/) has a voting irregularity widget.

I sort of want to shake people. VOTE PROVISIONALLY if you haven't gotten an absentee ballot. VOTE PROVISIONALLY if there's some sort of irregularity.

Well, Capitol Grilling is offline.  Pretty sure the board owner didn't like us razzing him for voting for Romney, given his "I ONLY EVER VOTE INDEPENDENT/3RD PARTY" schtick.

Funny thing is, he's Tunisian.  I'm sure Romney's America will be very comfortable for him.

Yesterday we reported that True the Vote was attempting to place observers at precincts in Central Ohio, focusing on African American districts.  We also noted that there might be some problems with the forms they submitted to the Franklin County Board of Elections (FCBOE).

The FCBOE met today and determined that True the Vote had likely falsified the forms submitted for general election observers. The new observer forms, filed over the past few days by True the Vote representative (and Hilliard Tea Party Member) Jan Loar, used candidate signatures copied from a previous set of forms filed in early October

All but one (Scott Rupert, an independent for U.S. Senate) of the six candidates whose names appeared on the original form had withdrawn permission to use their signatures prior to the submission of today's forms.   During the BOE meeting Candidate Terri Jamison spoke up to say her name was "forged" on the latest round of forms.

The form for appointing observers reads 'election falsification is a 5th degree felony'.  Election officials have confirmed that there will be a post-election investigation of True the Vote.

The forms have been rejected unanimously by all members (Rs and Ds) on the board.  True the Vote observers will not be allowed in Franklin County polling locations tomorrow.  Poll monitoring organizations expect they may still be stationed outside of polling locations.

Board member Zachary Manifold told us he was "amazed that a group that goes to such extreme lengths to claim voting fraud in Ohio would knowingly forge or misuse signatures to try to gain access to Franklin County polling locations."

According to a news release from the Department of Justice their personnel will monitor the election in Franklin County for Voting Rights Act violations.  The Voting Rights Act prohibits discrimination in the election process on the basis of race, color or membership in a minority language group.

Video from today's BOE meeting is posted below, along with a copy of voting forms filed by True the Vote and letter from one of the candidates asking that her name not be used by True the Vote.

Second article:
QuoteUpdate @5:45 pm pm ET: An independent analysis of the list of names challenged by Tampa Vote Fair's Kimberly Kelley reveals the list is 40 percent black, which compares to 15 percent of registered voters who are black. Political scientists Daniel Smith of University of Florida and Michael Herron of Dartmouth College identified 73 people on the list using voter ID numbers in the Florida voter file. They also found just 16 percent of the voters on the list were registered as Republicans, compared to 33 percent of county voters. "We're essentially seeing the privitzation of voter suppression," says Smith, "and that should be highly disconcerting. Now we have private citizens through this organization Tampa Vote Fair doing their own data mining and matching and challenging potential citizens at the polls."

*****

Tea Party activists in Florida's largely black and electorally significant Interstate 4 corridor have worked furiously to put a damper on what has been a record-setting turnout thus far. In one of the most striking examples of voter suppression to emerge, Voting Rights Watch obtained a list of several dozen Hillsborough County voters who will be surprised to learn they cannot vote regular ballots thanks to last-minute challenges filed against them.

I've requested similar information from Miami-Dade, Orange, Pinellas and Seminole counties, but officials have not responded. A spokesperson for the Secretary of State's Office, Chris Cate, said the state does not track voter challenges, so there is no way of knowing how widespread these sorts of challenges may be.

In Hillsborough County, seventy-seven people—forty of them in Tampa—won't be able to file a regular ballot because the True the Vote–affiliated group Tampa Vote Fair has challenged their voting status. Of those, sixty-eight have been challenged because Tampa Vote Fair asserts they are ineligible due to a felony conviction. These people will not know that their vote has been challenged until they reach the polls and are forced to cast a provisional ballot. (Some of them may have already attempted to vote during the early voting period.)

According to documents provided to Voting Rights Watch by Hillsborough County Attorney's office, all seventy-seven of the voter challenges were filed by Kimberly Kelley, Tampa Vote Fair's president, and all are dated October 16, 2012—a full week after voter registration ended in Florida. Earlier this year, Kelley sent to the Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections multiple lists of people she suspected were ineligible to vote because of felony convictions. One of those lists had 1,375 names on it, which the county supervisor forwarded on to the state to investigate, but which turned up no names yet of people improperly registered.

Kelley's new list is significant in that it is an official under-oath declaration from Tampa Vote Fair that these people should not be allowed to vote. Kelley is putting herself at risk by filing the challenges. If any of the challenges are determined to be frivolous, then Kelley could be charged with a first-degree misdemeanor, punishable by up to a year in prison, for each bogus challenge. The attorney general will make the determination of whether the challenges are frivolous or in good faith, but this is unchartered territory—perhaps the most extreme steps a True the Vote–affiliated group has taken to strip voters of election rights. Hillsborough County managing attorney Mary Helen Farris told me she is not aware of any voter challenges filed in 2008 or 2010.

All of Kelley's challenges were made by matching state voter registration names and dates of birth with information from the state's Department of Corrections database. In nine cases, she challenged voters based off them having the wrong addresses, while in the other sixty-eight she accuses of them of being "an adjudicated guilty felon."

Florida's laws around felony disenfranchisement and for challenging voters both have roots in a time and space when the state's lawmakers were purposely trying to suppress black voters. The Brennan Center for Justice's report "Voter Challengers" says:

Many states originally enacted challenger laws to block minority voters' access to the polls. Virginia, for instance, passed its first challenger law in the immediate wake of Reconstruction alongside a host of other suppressive measures, such as poll taxes and literacy tests, aimed at recently freed former slaves. Other states—like Florida, Ohio and Minnesota—similarly passed challenger legislation during the nineteenth century to suppress turnout in black communities.

The Brennan Center recommends that challengers bear the burden of proving a voter is ineligible through documented evidence before a legal challenge can be placed, while giving the presumption of eligibility—the presumption of innocence—to a voter. Brennan also recommends that voters should be shielded from frivolous challenges and given ample time to respond to a challenge before Election Day, as opposed to showing up at the polls and finding out that they can't file a regular ballot.

The Controversy Over Bottled Water

Kelley's challenges aren't the only ones Tampa voters needed to worry about during the early voting period. Last Friday and Saturday, the last two official days of early voting, black voters and NAACP members were upset when Republican poll watchers challenged NAACP members for passing out water and offering chairs to voters standing in long lines in the hot sun.

Black voters have been turning out in record numbers, not only in Tampa but throughout the state. There are reports of people standing in line up to seven hours, many of them elderly and disabled—and at one Orlando site there was a bomb scare.

So NAACP members have been passing out water to help people deal with the heat. A Republican poll watcher reported this activity at the C. Blythe Andrews Jr. polling site in Tampa, a predominantly African-American district, and had the poll clerk stop the water distribution. According to NAACP political action chair Yvette Lewis, the Republican poll watcher accused the teams of bribing voters with the water, much like a challenge filed by a Republican poll watcher Sunday when helpers passed out fried fish.

Lewis said the water ban was made possible by a poll watcher assigned by the Democratic Party (all poll watchers are assigned by the political parties) who capitulated to the Republican poll watcher's demands, in an effort to "pick and choose their battles."

True the Vote–affiliated poll watchers filed similar challenges against the NAACP for passing out water in Houston. Right-wing blogger Matthew Vadum, who once wrote that it should be criminal to register low-income people to vote, wrote about the Houston NAACP Water-Gate caper saying:

Poll watcher Eve Rockford said members of the left-wing so-called civil rights group appeared at the early polling place wearing NAACP-labeled clothing and 50 cases of bottled water. The activists handed out the water bottles to individuals standing in line waiting to vote. They were also "stirring the crowd" and "talking to voters about flying to Ohio to promote President Barack Obama," said Rockford, who was trained in poll-watching by True the Vote, a prominent electoral integrity organization.

Lewis said the Republican poll watcher stood outside the polling place, "Grinning like, 'Ha, I control you all, I shut you all down,' because that's what it felt like. We had all these people out here to help voters and this one man shut it down."

But it didn't seem to stop the flow of voter traffic. Black voter turnout at predominantly black districts hovered around 45 percent, which Lewis said was "very good" compared to 2008. But it also means that there's roughly half of remaining black eligible voters who have one more day to vote, tomorrow, which means lines could be even longer.

The early voting number totals are impressive—166,937 in total throughout Hillsborough County, the anchor of the important Interstate 4 corridor that includes Tampa, Orlando and Daytona Beach. In 2008, the total early voting numbers in Hillsborough County totalled 146,563—and that was with four more days of early voting than this year.

Oh, Arizona...

http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2012/11/05/republican-candidates-robocalls-tell-ariz-democrats-wrong-polling-place/?utm_source=Raw+Story+Daily+Update&utm_campaign=743ad08a61-Monday_Day_Election_11_5_2012&utm_medium=email

More than a half dozen Democrats in Scottsdale, Arizona have come forward to say that they received automated telephone calls — or robocalls — from Rep. Jeff Flake's (R-AZ) Senate campaign that told them to vote in the wrong place.

"It was totally wrong," lifelong Democrat Mary Crecco told KPNX. "And I feel like it was done purposely."

The robocall, which said it was sponsored by Flake's campaign, told Crecco to vote at Immanuel Bible Church, but her actual polling place is three miles away at Copper Canyon Elementary.

Other Democrats said they were informed that their polling places were up to 11 miles away from where they were supposed to vote.

For its part, the Flake campaign denied that Democratic voters were being targeted, insisting that only households with Republicans voters had been called.

"We had less than 10 voters contact the office with questions," Flake spokesperson Andrew Wilder said. "The only Democrats who would have received the call should be those that line in a Republican household."

But Crecco argued that no Republicans lived at her residence.

"Allegations like this where people are trying to disrupt the system — in this case Congressman Flake's team — really are detrimental to the Democratic process," Arizona Senate candidate Richard Carmona explained to KPNX.

A survey released by Public Policy Polling on Sunday found that Flake was leading Carmona by 5 points.

...Rhode Island was easy.
That explains the stupid long line we had this morning. And we were there when they opened the doors, which usually has us in and out quick.

It seems that some states, particularly swing states with Republican governors, have deliberately made things more difficult, and have done things to FUBAR the lines.

No it's not.  The media say it's going to be a tight race because then it gets ratings up.  If everyone tuned in and Wolf Fucking Blitzer came out and said "it's a done deal: four more years for Obama", two things would happen:

1) Wingnuts would shriek about liberal media bias, the tyranny of maths etc and not watch CNN anymore, causing CNN to take a rating hit, and

2) everyone else would go "oh, OK" and not sit on the edge of their seat in anticipation.

There's also a third reason why vested interests would like you to believe the race is almost equal, but that's secret.  Oh, OK then, if Obama goes "ooh scary Mormon Underpants in the White House", it gets the dopes who flatter themselves by the name of "Democratic Party activists" all in a bother and to "get the vote out".

Then when Obama wins by a huge margin, they can turn around to everyone else and say "well, that's a mandate if I ever saw one.  Do you really want to go against the will of The People in giving the banks another trillion dollars?"  So they have no reason to deny the race is close whatsoever.

Notice they're "calling" states with unpredictable criteria. Some states are called for a candidate with a 10 point lead, others when a candidate has a 5 point lead, and still others are called for a candidate when the OTHER candidate is in the lead. Unpredictable, unless of course their entire purpose is to maintain the appearance of an exact tie as long as possible.

The linchpin is Ohio. Expect that to be "too close to call" until after midnight.

Mr Romney's father George was governor of Michigan in the 1960s and Mitt Romney was born and raised there.

But the president's 2009 rescue of the car industry helped seal the deal with the state's voters, analysts say.

Mr Obama also took Pennsylvania, continuing a Democratic streak dating back to 1992. He also held New Hampshire and Minnesota, states he won in 2008 but which the Republicans hoped to take from him.

Elsewhere, Mr Romney won Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, West Virginia and Wyoming.

Mr Obama has taken Connecticut, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington DC.

Of the states called so far, Indiana switched hands from 2008, when Mr Obama narrowly won it. Mr Obama also failed to hold a single Nebraska electoral vote he won in 2008.

I'm not sure, but yeah, someone needs to win by more than 1% in Florida to avoid a recount.

West coast is coming in, and according to NBCNews, Obama is 27 electoral votes away from the win.  And Oregon, Nevada, and Iowa are still outstanding.  So Obama just needs Ohio and two of those states and he wins. Romney needs a hail mary at this point.

My retort was this,

"I respect you as a family member, as my aunt, and as my mother's sister.  I ask that you return that respect, because it's what Pop [my grandfather/her father] would have wanted."

And left it at that. The high road is the best road when dealing with family.

Dear America,
We had a special night together tonight, you and I.
While I was getting shitfaced on caffeine, you voted a bunch of apparent non-morons into public office, voted to legalize same-sex marriage, voted to legalize marijuana and kept Mittens and His Magic Underpants out of the White House for another four years. But on the other hand, the Two Man Con is as strong as ever before. Not many people voted third party, and most of those who did voted for former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson, who exploited the fact that nobody knew who the fuck he was or what he did as governor to portray himself as a sort of Ron Paul with a human, progressive face. Nevermind his connections to the Koch brothers, the extremist right-wingers involved in his campaign or that his "non-interventionist" foreign policy not necessarily involved stopping drone strikes in Yemen and Pakistan or closing Guantanamo. The Two Man Con now comes with a quirky little monkey to distract those smart-asses who don't fall for the main trick.

Another thing I noticed, America, was all the "experts" saying that this was such a very close race. It wasn't really. This was less close than 1916, 1960, 1976, 2000, 2004, and similar in closeness to 1968. But who wants to watch "welcome to election night on CNN, Obama is going to win and we're going to lead you through 7 hours of Obama winning important swing states"? 1. Unbalanced coverage between the two parties, no matte what their actual support are, will lead to people voting third party. 2. It will lead to accusations of Liberal/Conservative bias. 3. It will lead to less clicks, hits, views and ultimately, less money for those covering it.

You gave the Republitards a light beating tonight, but I'm fairly certain they'll regroup and find a way around the decreasing numbers of angry white men and scare Latinos, angry white women and African-Americans into voting for them. They still have a majority in Congress, anyway.

Dear America,
Hope is for presidents,
and dreams are for people who are sleeping.

See you in four years.
Love,
McCarthyesque Leninist

Our politician- results went as expected. Obama lost my county, Feinestine is going back to Washington, Costa the blue dog is going back to Washington and so is Devin Nunes the super Republican (at least he didn't run unopposed this time). Prop thirty passed (education - rich people pay more taxes and our sales tax go up) and thirty eight went down (lowering everybody's taxes, but especially rich people's). So, more money for schools, there's no $150 jump in tuition for next semester, and $500 back in my pocket from this semester!

If you felt the meltdown in 2009 was epic, you ain't seen nothing yet.

Romney's defeat can be spun any way by any faction in the GOP, meaning the answer will invariably come back to "MOAR IDEOLOGICAL PURITY", meaning the Tea Party may end up looking like the moderate wing of the party compared to what is coming.

Not to mention the possibility of a new state. We could really witness the firepower of a fully-armed and operational Republican House. They could be big enough dicks and reject Puerto Rico's statehood IF that makes it to fruition.

I'm already hearing that Johnson Nadered Ohio.

I think I might die of pleasure.  :lulz: :lulz: :lulz:

 I love the end frame.

I....don't get it though. Maybe it's my general sense of apathy, but if ROMNEY had won, yea I'd be pretty disappointed in people and would have concerns about womens' rights, gay rights, among other things, which I think would be legitimate to an extent at least, but I don't see the wailing and gnashing of teeth and tearing of hair and "OH GOD DOOMSDAY IS UPON US". While I may be somewhat emotionally invested in certain values I have and believe that Romney stands for the opposite of most of them, I don't see the emotional devastation and "OH NO WE JUST ELECTED HITLER 2!"

The problem is that the only thing the Republicans have really said was "It can't be Obama, he'll ruin this country." If you tell yourself something often enough you'll believe it. These people have basically brainwashed themselves into thinking that of all people Mitt Romney was the Republic's last best hope for survival. Now they expect a full rejection of the constitution, and the United States of America to become the United Soviet Socialist States of America. Some of them expect they'll wind up in FEMA trains and FEMA camps and FEMA coffins now too, I'm sure. I'm not surprised.

I'm runnin through the city - dear God
If I merk the racist Rush Limbaugh I wonder would you forgive me? (Huh?)

My friends and I just discussed this, should someone actually CONSIDER a 2nd Civil War.

1: The "Liberal Northeast" is the most populated part of the nation. It would take everyone in every red state to take up arms to even try.
2: We may not have as many "guns" but we have the most National Guard presence. Rhode Island, for instance, is where the Guard started AND has the 2nd largest presence of guardsmen IN THE NATION. We have arsenals full of goodies.
3: They would have to be exceptionally stupid to even TRY to raise an army.
4: Navy? Yeah, we got them too, and a lot of Coast Guard and generally angry fishermen.

Seriously, if they haven't already, I'm waiting for someone to go, "We should burn all their universities!" Because well, someone tried to insult me for going to a "liberal arts college." Because liberal arts means liberal government. Or something...good thing I actually go to a research university.

In a weird way, this pleased me more than Romney not winning. I was talking to one of my clients today about the trouncing of McMahon and she said "Why didn't McMahon just take the 76 million and establish a foundation to achieve whatever social good she claimed to provide without having to run for office?"

Interesting point. Linda McMahon carpet bombed our mailbox with expensive glossy flyers and choked up our tv with ads all of which DID NOT WORK. Nor did her trick of pretending to be pro-Obama. Given that there's only 8 million people in CT, she could have just given everyone a million dollars and saved 68 million. Boom! Poverty over.

There's some perspective for you. If politics was about the good of the American people, the rich motherfuckers who drop millions on campaigns would be putting them instead into college funds, food banks, and financial aid charities for people struggling to pay their mortgages. It's about consolidating power, not benefiting the people.

Of you look at the insane distribution of wealth in the US and how much the rich have compared to the poor, it becomes immediately readily apparent that poverty and lack of education could be absolutely wiped out with a tiny fraction of the altruism that the rich claim to have. For example, a six million dollar fund would feed, clothe, house, and educate (K-PhD) every resident of the State of Washington into perpetuity, but although the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has given away something like $26,000,000 since inception, that's not on the list.

Economically speaking, the only reason to maintain such an enormous wealth disparity is that our economic system is dependent on an extreme economic disparity in order to maintain the power and wealth concentration of the elite. It's not a very functional economic system, unless the function we're hoping for is widespread poverty.

i've heard people say that studies indicate that it is. however, i haven't really looked into that myself.
based on my experience, and experience of seeing children raised, and now raising some myself, i would say no.  avoidance of applying biases to an obvious visual discriminant is what must be taught.  it seems evident enough to me that i would have above average skepticism when reading claims that this is not so....

All bigotry is taught, although Ippy's right on the money for teenagers/adults. There's no "I'm not a bigot anymore!" pill you can take. It's a constant effort to examine your views/their origin. It's a kind of jail breaking, imo.

IMO, part of the reason it persists (at least for white people) is because it's to our economic advantage to continue to force PoC out of decent positions (THEY TEK OWR JERBS!).

I don't, but you could add to that "what about Africa?"

Most African leaders are deeply disappointed in Obama.  Bush, for whatever reason, pumped a load of money into the continent, into development and aid programs, education...leaders had hoped given Obama's heritage, he would also take a great interest in the continent.  Instead, Obama has only shown interest in where military bases are going to go.

Of course, I suspect most American voters don't care about Africa (5% of American voters named foreign policy as their top concern...something like 57% of those thought Obama was better than Romney on that), but it could be used to shame some liberals.

So, an interesting correlation has been noted in the UK.

By and large, Tory party members loathe Romney.  The reasons for this are partly political, and partly petty.  Politically, they see Romney is a shameless opportunist who had no plan for paying off the US public debt - no plan that would work anyway.  He was needlessly antagonist towards China, a major British trading partner and possible future EU arms client.  He seemed uninterested and unknowledgeable about the European financial crisis - except using it as a stick to beat his political enemies with.

In addition to that, he came over here, abused our hospitality in order to cast doubt on our ability to put on the Games and annoyed the Prime Minister.  That's the function of the Tory Right, not smarmy foreigners.  He's their Prime Minister to abuse, Romney needs to get in line and wait for his turn.

Not to say they're keen on the Kenyan Marxist Usurper...but they find him a known quantity, and his excesses to be considerably less than Romney's.

Yet, a quick reading of the Telegraph Blogs section will quickly show that right wing pundits, on the other hand, were hugely enthusiastic about a Romney Presidency.  They couldn't shut up about how Romney would thrash the moochers, belittle the global warming scientists, bring back Morality and Law And Order and other fantastical tales.

Why the difference?

Well, it's a matter of incentives.  The Tory base have little to gain from a Romney presidency, despite his apparent love of the "special relationship".  Said relationship doesn't exactly bring trade benefits to the UK, you know.  In fact, maintaining said relationship can end up making a Prime Minister deeply unpopular with their own voters, such as happened to Tony Blair.  This can tarnish an entire party as being "lapdogs" of a foreign regime - as it did with Blair (though the likes of Denis MacShane running around the place abusing everyone to the left of Attila the Hun as "pro-Saddam" and then publically rimming Bibi did not help matters), which would be very unfortunate for the Conservatives, who are typically more nationalist than internationalist in outlook and voting base.

However, Telegraph writers and similar can, if they play up the posh accent and semi-respectable academic credentials enough, get a gig on the US Wingnut Welfare Scheme - a system that subsidises the lifestyles of those who are willing to become propagandists for the GOP with a variety of interesting writing and speaking jobs, or think tank positions for the more academically inclined.  It is this route that Christopher Hitchens (sort of) and Niall Ferguson have trod, that Melanie Phillips and James Dellingpole are desperately trying to tread, and that the Telegraph blog crowd are hoping to be considered for.

Que bono?  should be an obvious question to ask when considering any question involving people.

Somewhat more importantly...

Marijuana legalization won in Colorado, with 50,000 more votes than Obama.  Massachusetts legalized medical pot. Washington legalized pot AND gay marriage. Detroit decriminalized pot. A few other places either legalized gay marriage or at least prevented pre-emptive gay marriage bans.

The less people that get put in prison as a result of the drug war (which Obama has ramped up since the Bush years) the better, since said war has an incredibly outsized impact on minorities and the poorest segments of society.

American politics, thy name is Spite:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-20247097

QuoteBarack Obama has returned to Washington focused on broaching an impasse with Republicans over the deficit reduction deal needed to avoid a fiscal crisis.

The newly reelected US president faces a fiscal "cliff" of spending cuts and tax rises unless agreement is reached.

The Republicans retained control of the House of Representatives on Tuesday, but failed to take the Senate.

House Speaker John Boehner hinted at the possibility of a compromise if the president agreed to tax reform.

Mr Boehner, who negotiated with Mr Obama over a so-called "grand bargain" of spending cuts and new revenues in 2011, said he would accept new revenue-raising as part of a tax reform deal.

Even before he flew with his family from their Chicago base to Andrews Air Force Base in Washington on Wednesday evening, Mr Obama had phoned the speaker to emphasise the need to reach a budget compromise when Congress returns next week.

In other words, cut taxes on those earning $250,000 or more, or the borrowing limit stays in place and the economy is fucked.

The GOP have no reason not to go for this.  They lost the election, and are riding high on butthurt and nihilism.  They can't force the issue in the Senate, but they sure as hell can stall things in the House.

http://swampland.time.com/2012/11/07/inside-the-secret-world-of-quants-and-data-crunchers-who-helped-obama-win/2/

QuoteA large portion of the cash raised online came through an intricate, metric-driven e-mail campaign in which dozens of fundraising appeals went out each day. Here again, data collection and analysis were paramount. Many of the e-mails sent to supporters were just tests, with different subject lines, senders and messages. Inside the campaign, there were office pools on which combination would raise the most money, and often the pools got it wrong. Michelle Obama's e-mails performed best in the spring, and at times, campaign boss Messina performed better than Vice President Joe Biden. In many cases, the top performers raised 10 times as much money for the campaign as the underperformers.

Chicago discovered that people who signed up for the campaign's Quick Donate program, which allowed repeat giving online or via text message without having to re-enter credit-card information, gave about four times as much as other donors. So the program was expanded and incentivized. By the end of October, Quick Donate had become a big part of the campaign's messaging to supporters, and first-time donors were offered a free bumper sticker to sign up.

QuoteThe magic tricks that opened wallets were then repurposed to turn out votes. The analytics team used four streams of polling data to build a detailed picture of voters in key states. In the past month, said one official, the analytics team had polling data from about 29,000 people in Ohio alone — a whopping sample that composed nearly half of 1% of all voters there — allowing for deep dives into exactly where each demographic and regional group was trending at any given moment. This was a huge advantage: when polls started to slip after the first debate, they could check to see which voters were changing sides and which were not.

It was this database that helped steady campaign aides in October's choppy waters, assuring them that most of the Ohioans in motion were not Obama backers but likely Romney supporters whom Romney had lost because of his September blunders. "We were much calmer than others," said one of the officials. The polling and voter-contact data were processed and reprocessed nightly to account for every imaginable scenario. "We ran the election 66,000 times every night," said a senior official, describing the computer simulations the campaign ran to figure out Obama's odds of winning each swing state. "And every morning we got the spit-out — here are your chances of winning these states. And that is how we allocated resources."

QuoteData helped drive the campaign's ad buying too. Rather than rely on outside media consultants to decide where ads should run, Messina based his purchases on the massive internal data sets. "We were able to put our target voters through some really complicated modeling, to say, O.K., if Miami-Dade women under 35 are the targets, [here is] how to reach them," said one official. As a result, the campaign bought ads to air during unconventional programming, like Sons of Anarchy, The Walking Dead and Don't Trust the B—- in Apt. 23, skirting the traditional route of buying ads next to local news programming. How much more efficient was the Obama campaign of 2012 than 2008 at ad buying? Chicago has a number for that: "On TV we were able to buy 14% more efficiently ... to make sure we were talking to our persuadable voters," the same official said.

The numbers also led the campaign to escort their man down roads not usually taken in the late stages of a presidential campaign. In August, Obama decided to answer questions on the social news website Reddit, which many of the President's senior aides did not know about. "Why did we put Barack Obama on Reddit?" an official asked rhetorically. "Because a whole bunch of our turnout targets were on Reddit."

Also worth noting - Obama's team built their own data-driven systems, which allowed for them to be repurposed and adjusted for other purposes (like voting metrics), whereas Team Romney relied on off-the-shelf products provided by corporate backers, which usually only did one thing, and badly (but looked real pretty on their Apple Macs, I'm sure).

Because ressenitment.

Basically, losers have to make themselves feel better, so they claim to be morally superior to those who defeated them.  Nietzsche talked about this a lot, in relation to Christian morals, which makes it an even better fit for the modern GOP supporter than their actual behaviour.

Cain, in relation to money: One of the takeaways being pushed is that tons of anonymous money was spent on the election, but it didn't really push the results one way or the other (for example, Romney spent massively in the swing states that he lost).

If this is true, it either implies that the Citizens United decision wasn't as bad as we thought and money doesn't have as much influence as assumed, or that it simply takes an imbalance of spending in order to make a difference, which only serves to escalate the amount of money spent per election.
Title: Re: Election Night. Gimme My Fix.
Post by: Cain on November 08, 2012, 03:13:18 PM
A lot of the stuff about Citizens United was hot air, yes.  The US Presidential system was awash in money well before this decision was made, spending normally only shifts about 1% of the vote, maximum, and the two candidates are usually far closer in economic policy than most people want to admit, meaning they get a roughly equal share of spending money.

However, the more pernicious aspects of Citizens United are the ones which are not getting much press, how large employers are pressuring their employees to vote in particular ways, using corporate funds to create propaganda which is then handed out to employees who are required to read it, having them turn up for ersatz political rallies and so on.

That's rather similar to how voting works in Russia.  Except the Russian system has more dead Chechens.

Oh my god, I'm so glad to see people starting to re-examine that whole system. Three strikes laws and mandatory minimum sentences are among the most unjust aspects of the American justice system. When I hear "tough on crime" in a political campaign I automatically translate it to "in the pocket of the for-profit prison lobby" and I hope that others are beginning to as well.

QuoteWithin hours, on the advice of his messaging shop and with the blessing of his foreign policy advisers, Romney approved a statement that accused Obama of sympathizing with anti-American interests in the Muslim world. It was sent out shortly after 10 p.m.

By sunrise the next day, it was clear to Romney that they had acted too quickly. The campaign learned that four Americans had been killed in an attack on a U.S. mission in Benghazi, Libya, including Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens. Even to some Republicans, Romney's hasty statement looked insensitive.

"We screwed up, guys," Romney told aides on a conference call that morning, according to multiple people on the call. "This is not good."

His advisers told him that, if he took back his statement, the neoconservative wing of the party would "take his head off."

Mrs Mang had the whole 'You can't vote Obama if you're a Christian' insanity thrown at her recently. Many moons ago, Mrs M (as a teen) went to a Baptist church....but she got better.

Anyways, a new woman working in her office went to that same church some time ago, so there are people they both know in common. The mistake this woman made was assuming that:

a) Mrs Mang was a Christian.
b) That her political views were 'traditional' if we use the word traditional is the sense of 'divinely sanctioned racism & homophobia'.

So, new girl kept bringing up politics and the election and Mrs Mang kept dodging the issue. I told her that, if she didn't shut this woman down, she will believe you are a 'project' to get you back into church. Well, Mrs Mang kept her cool for a good while but the office noob was unable to decode her non-committal responses as a polite way of saying STFU.

Last week, Mrs Mang exploded epically    Every time the woman would try to object, Mrs Mang was 'nope, shut up, I'm still talking' swatting Baptist memes out of the air like King Kong and the biplanes. It was a glorious combination of frustration and logic that stunned this woman into silence.

The Freepers are also convinced Obama conned and vote-stuffed his way to electoral victory.

Their evidence?  Obama did not win states with strict voter ID laws.

Of course, that voter ID laws are the bugbear of Republican politicians, which would require a mostly Republican state to pass, meaning most of the state is ideologically predisposed to dislike Obama and not vote for him, is apparently not what happened at all, oh no.  Also no evidence of pro-Obama states in the last election that suddenly turned Republican due to voter ID.

Karl Rove spend 365 million dollars on his failed Super-PAC.

There are 311 million people in the US.

He could have given EVERY CENSUSED AMERICA A DOLLAR AND A QUARTER.

That's called wealth redistribution. Wasting money is a better use.

Even though, if we all had a million dollars, we'd be more likely to vote for Romney.

I gotta say, the best butthurt of the entire election is over at freerepublic.com.

This was the first thing I saw.

Quote1. TAX STRIKE

If you are self-employed, stop paying quarterlies and DO NOT FILE next April. Boehner rolled over this morning and announced that the "Republicans" are gung-ho to raise taxes. They can only raise taxes on you if you pay taxes. Don't pay. DO NOT FILE.

IF YOU ARE NOT SELF-EMPLOYED and your employer withholds your taxes, all you have to do is increase THE NUMBER OF EXEMPTIONS YOU CLAIM. Exemptions are NOT just wife-and-kids. People who make large charitable donations kick up their exemptions, as do people with big mortgages. In theory, there is no maximum to the number of exemptions you can claim, but 9 is considered to be the "normal" maximum. Go to your human resources / payroll department tomorrow and tell them you want to increase your exemptions and thus decrease your withholding as much as possible. Then, next April, DO NOT FILE.

There is exactly ONE non-violent remedy left to you, and that is a tax strike. If you do not do this, you are guaranteeing, and I mean 1000% guaranteeing, that there will be a massive hot war and genocide in the United States within the next decade. Go find a good teenaged boy. Look into his eyes, and then understand that if we do not starve the Putsch Regime in Washington, that boy will almost certainly die in the war.

He could have paid every teacher in America's salary for 10 years.
He could have bailed out every foreclosing house.
He could have fixed the levees in NOLA.

Still, when you figure that Rove spent 365 million, Linda 'Why does no one love me?' McMahon spent 76. The casino guy, Adelson gave 70 million. That's just three obvious ones off the top of my head aside from all the Super PAC money. :lulz: I did the same failmath while drunk the other night, no worries.

But when you consider the amount spent on the election and that every million dollars could generate $60,000 in annual dividends if conservatively invested (staying clear of high-yield, high-risk investments) it gets a little upsetting to realize that the same money could have provided 360,000 people with health insurance forever, or sent 180,000 people to college every year. Forever.

The bottom line of it all is this - when you consider how much money was spent on the campaigns, added to the amount of tax revenues not being collected from major companies and then coupled with the enormous waste perpetrated by the same companies* you realize that America can quite easily afford decent healthcare, education & infrastructure for everyone.

*Eg: Halliburton during the Iraq war racked up all sorts of interesting invoices. $45 for a 6 pack of coke. $100 per bag of laundry. $7000 pm for a lease on an ordinary car. The empty convoys they ran. The trucks they had the army destroy when they broke down. Change an oil filter? No, blow that fucker up and request a new one for $80k. Not to mention that they got a $1billion tax REBATEthis year.

Or there's tech companies like Apple & Google who fucking LOVE LOVE LOVE the loopholes. Apple kindly paid less than 2% tax on all their foreign sales.

But no. America is broke. We just can't figure out how to make Social Security work anymore.

Working primarily as a web developer, I had some serious questions. That article was extremely interesting in light of the unusually low turnout among older voters. We had high youth turnout and I wondered what on earth happened to keep those normally avidly voting oldsters at home. Sounds like this might have been a contributor, which is pretty interesting.

Also, Mark Ames makes a persuasive case that Gary Johnson was a Republican gambit to split the Obama vote:

http://nsfwcorp.com/dispatch/gary-johnson-swindle

QuoteOne statistic: The road-widening cost the state $345 million, which Gov. Johnson covered by tapping a federal bond program giving the state 20 years to pay back the interest. So the "principled" budget-conscious libertarian governor and libertarian businessman went crawling to the federal government to rack up a giant credit card bill, then dumped the $345 million construction cost on "Robert the Bruce, King of the Scots" Once you realize Johnson is a conventional hard-right Republican, it's not surprising that the people running his campaign are some of the GOP's nastiest dirty tricksters.

Exhibit A: Roger Stone, a self-described "GOP hitman" with a giant tattoo of Richard Nixon's face etched across his back. Roger Stone —the skeeziest, meanest, most flamboyant and most Russian-nihilistic of any Republican dirty trickster working the field going back a few decades, the Satanic Zelig of Republican black ops, who's had a hand in just about every major GOP election crime you've heard of, and lots more you haven't heard of. Everyone seems to have forgotten already, but last spring, Roger Stone made a big public stink about how he's fed up with the Republican Party and the two-party stranglehold, and joined Gary Johnson's Libertarian Party campaign. Pro bono. Because democratic idealism and principles are what Roger Stone is all about.

Let's see if this makes any sense in the context of Roger Stone's record. Starting with the 1972 Nixon re-election campaign, when a hippie-bashing college student named Roger Stone joined Nixon's dirty tricks team, and impressed them with stunts like planting a fake check from the Socialist Party in a rival's campaign fund kitty, then leaking that story to the press... Or planting a spy in Hubert Humphrey's campaign and seeing to it that his spy becomes Hubert Humphrey's favorite driver on the campaign trail...

Roger Stone had a hand in the "Willie Horton" ad; he masterminded the Florida "yuppie riot" on James Baker's behalf, halting the recount long enough to let William Rehnquist decide the elections; and although he won't admit it on record yet, Roger Stone is most likely responsible for destroying Dan Rather's career by planting the fake National Guard documents on his producer.

That's a small sampler, but it's enough to make anyone with a functioning brain realize that when Roger Stone's says he's suddenly decided he's had a political awakening and he's now a hardcore libertarian doing volunteer "pro bono" political consulting for Gary Johnson's campaign... you better assume he's not telling you the whole story. The whole story is absurd, but obviously Roger Stone is onto something by offering the media such a hack storyline, knowing that precisely because it's so Hollywood unreal, the Manhattan media elites will swallow it hook, line and sinker.

Definitely illegal in California, due to the Unruh Civil Rights Act, but I can't find anything federal, or Arizonan stating that it is illegal for businesses to discriminate over political affiliation.

ETA: might be a legitimate safety concern if he's not sure he can trust the judgement of some of his patrons if someone were to come in there saying nice things about the president.

Could be a bloodbath.

You know, if Applebees had thrown their weight behind, say, a universal payer system during the process in 2010 and that had passed, then there wouldn't be a burden on their profit margin at all, and they would save millions every year.

Yet I am fairly sure that Tankel would think such a system is a socialist abomination.  My only reaction:  :horrormirth:

A depressing dose of reality from Ian Welsh (http://www.ianwelsh.net/reality-about-americas-future/):

QuoteNow that the silly season is over, let's be really clear where events are headed.

1) Obama is reelected.  He never needs your vote ever again. What he does need, to become as rich as Bill Clinton, is people to buy his speeches.  If you don't have 500K or so hanging around to pay for an ex-POTUS speech, you are no longer part of his constituency.  Practically speaking, he needs to make sure people in the financial industry have the money and inclination to make him rich once he's no longer President.

2) Idiot triumphalism aside, the electoral count was deceptive.  The Republicans didn't lose by that much in key electoral states.  The Democrats are not cruising for 20 years of control of the Presidency.  There will be a Republican president again, that is an existential certainty.  The Republicans didn't want this election very much, and did not really push for it.  There are good reasons for that.

3) The Republican party are reactionaries, who want to repeal the 20th century.  The Democrats are conservatives.  There is no major left wing party in the US.  Since avowed left-wingers won't even vote for third parties in states where Democrats will win for sure, like New York, third parties can be written off for the time being, especially on the left.  If there is a third party which will rise, it will be on the right.

4) The Republicans and the Democrats agree on many issues, disagreeing mostly on social issues.  Even on social issues, the differences are in the margins.  Obama deported more Hispanics than Bush, but is ok with letting college educated young Hispanics stay, which was enough to buy the Hispanic vote, since they came here to build a better future for their children.  Obama overruled his drug administration's scientists to make sure that Plan B did not become an OTC medication, because as a father he would want to know.  (Of course, if an underage female needs Plan B, in a lot of cases it will be because her father or other family member raped her.)  Obama signed an executive order saying that federal money could not be used for abortion.

5) On civil liberties, as opposed to social issues, there is no real space between the two parties.  Obama has increased surveillance, arrogated the right to kill American citizens without a trial, and instituted more cases against whistle blowers than any President in history.

6) Obama wants a Grand Bargain.  This will mean some nominal tax increases on the rich, and a pile of cuts to the middle class and the poor, especially the young.  SS & Medicare will be cut.

7) Bush tried to cut SS, he failed.  Obama will succeed, cutting SS and Medicare is something only a Democrat can do.  Moreover he will make Dems vote for it, and the Republicans will only give him enough votes to pass, most of them will vote against it, thus making Republicans the party of SS and Medicare.  There will also be massive cuts to the federal bureaucracy and even further cuts to programs like food stamps (which continues to exist only because farmers want it.)

8 ) Obama is, thus, moving to austerity. The economy will be ok till he gets what he wants, then it will crater.  Give it two years, after the mid-terms, you're toast.

9) Americans have decided they want catastrophe.  There is NO significant force in US society pushing against having a disaster.

10) The US is trying to become a petro-state through fracking.  It won't help most Americans, and it will do massive environmental damage.  It will also accelerate global warming.  Yes, Obama is better on global warming than Republicans, but he's not enough better to matter, he is, in fact, making it worse.  Your grandchildren will ritually curse your very names.

11) America will have another major war within 10 years.  That's what empires in decline do.  It could be with Saudi Arabia, it could be with China, it could be with someone else.  It will happen, because a President will be in a bind, and think "I've got this big military, why don't I use it to solve my problems?"

12) Inequality will continue to increase, with dips during recessions.  Wages and wealth of ordinary Americans will continue to drop.  There will be a small housing recovery, due to massive Fed intervention, keeping homes off the market and deliberate destruction of homes, but it will not get back to a bubble.

13) The Fiscal Cliff will most likely be averted this time, but it will happen again after the next financial crash.  If that one is avoided, it will happen again.  At some point, it won't be averted.  The US will have no choice at that point but to move to full war footing.  If you don't get a big war before that point, you will then.

14) The fiscal cliffs won't be avoided forever because the rich aren't really going to tax themselves at the necessary rates. If they do that, they don't get ahead.  Every collapse, they have to bailed out by someone else, if they aren't, they're destroyed.  They know this.  The key financial assets they held, at the depth of the crash, before the Fed started accepting them, were worth 10 cents on the dollar at best.

15) Europe is not going to fix its problems until the Euro collapses.  There will likely be civil wars, Spain is one obvious place it may happen.  Greece is almost certainly going to be taken over by the Golden Dawn, who aren't even neo-Nazis, but rather the real thing: straight up Nazis.  The rich would rather deal with Nazis than with the left.  That isn't going to work out for them, but they don't realize that.

16) In the 20s the Europeans relied on America to be the engine of growth, that didn't work out.  In the current day, the world is relying on China to be the engine of economic growth, and that isn't going to work out either.

17) After the fiscal cliff that isn't managed, and after the big war, the US will have a full fledged economic collapse, on the order of Russia after the USSR collapsed, but worse because most Americans don't actually own their houses (they have mortgages), don't have gardens where they can grow food, and don't have good public transit.

18) History is mutable.  This is now the glide path.  It is most likely.  The details can change, but the endgame is virtually certain.  Since no one in the US wants to stop collapse and catastrophe, it will happen.

19) After it happens, the current generation in power will be thrown out on their asses by the young, who will have to fix America.  We'll see if they have what it takes to do it.  Expect them to be very cruel to the old, who they will view as having screwed up everything and put the entire bill on them.  Among other things, expect an end to so-called intellectual property (a misnomer), expect the financial class to be gutted and expect a radical rewrite of bankruptcy laws.

20) This is an optimistic scenario.  The less optimistic (but possibly realistic) scenario has a "charismatic leader" of some variety take over and institute a dictatorship of some variety.  Many Americans will be begging for such a figure to arise, feeling that only a strong man can make the country work again.

Eh, younger generations have, and always will, blame the older generations for the ills of society.  It's just the nature of the beast.

Besides, it is perfectly logical if you think about it.  What's progress?  Making things better, which means things had to be worse before the improvements.

That's not to discount or discredit the gigantic piles of shit we have to wade through today, but I think no matter what, there will always be a natural tension between the young and the old.

Look at the reaction to the 2008 banking crisis.

I believe that should answer your question.

And there is an already pre-existing sentiment of "boomers dun fucked everything up".  We've seen it occasionally on this forum, where the quality of thinking is generally higher than that of the median voter.

That doesn't mean it will necessarily happen.  The future isn't written in stone after all*.  It just doesn't look good.

*My favoured candidate for a "man on a horse", General Petraeus, has been brought low, for example.  Having an affair with his biographer, who then attempted to hack his emails?  Prospects for riding in and saving the USA by carrying out "political population-centric COIN" are certainly much lower now.

The myth of Reagan is all powerful.  Reagan was the closest friend to Israel (despite cutting off strategic aid and voting to condemn them in the UN on several occasions).  Reagan cut taxes (well, except for all those stealth taxes he actually raised).  Reagan deplored Nixon's deal with China (until he changed his mind).  Reagan tirelessly supported freedom movements around the world (except when he refused to embargo Poland in response to the brutal crackdown on Solidarity).  Reagan never cut and run (except from Lebanon).  Reagan never compromised with rogue regimes (except all that backroom negotiation with Iran) and stood steadfast against the demands of the Soviet Union (except when he negotiated arms treaties with Gorbachev).  Reagan stood for strong national security (apart from detesting nuclear weapons) and for cracking down on terrorists (who he considered criminals and should be fought by legal means).

You can see why Reagan is such an inspiration to modern conservatives.  They know nothing about him.

What concerns me about our (by which I mean the Left's) acceptance of this completely shitty sequence of events is that we are making a statement that we find it morally and ethically acceptable to take someone's words off an ostensibly hidden portion of the Internet, take them to their boss, and apply pressure to get them fired, even after the words were removed and no longer visible to even the limited audience they were intended for.

We all know (or should know) that Facebook isn't really private, regardless of privacy settings that prevent bosses or strangers from seeing the retarded and often overly personal crap we post there. However, I feel that this crosses a big line, and I am actually outright horrified at the general Liberal endorsement of actions that can and you better believe will be used against all of us in the future... especially when you consider that we have things like states that allow employers to fire women for using birth control.

Short-sighted and stupid grants of power seem to be a hallmark of American politics for the last few decades.

I won't be surprised if in 2016, we see people arguing "you have to vote for Hillary Clinton...else President Ryan will have you assassinated by a drone!"  And then people will line up and dutifully pull a lever for Clinton, instead of thinking whether a system that relies on the good character on the person in office is actually a desirable state of affairs or not.

A frustrating element of even trying to discuss this with most people is that, relevant to something LMNO said the other day, most people can't stay on the topic of the moral and ethical ramifications of both the mob mentality and the media intervention, and keep slipping over to focus on the rightness of her actions or the actions of her employer.

YEAH!"  It seems like racism is coming back (or at least is less reviled), and I wouldn't begin to know where to start teaching people not to be ignorant jackasses without some form of tangible punishment, at least not in the US, that would work.

Another problem with that response is that punishing people for being racist just makes them more racist.

There is that, too.

I definitely saw an ugly side to Jezebel's approach to the racist twitters. On the one hand, yeah, racists are scumbags, but on the other, they really aren't worth becoming the self-appointed civilian thought police over. And ultimately, that's what it smacked of to me. Punishing the kids for a deviation from acceptable thought, even if said deviation was thoroughly reprehensible. It's like arresting people for making rape jokes.

It's weird, if a bunch of people just went and fucked with those kid's facebooks a bit, even if it made their life a living hell for a few days, I wouldn't have a problem with it because internet, get tuff, ect. Its only when authority(the school, the woman's job) becomes involved that it feels like punishing a thought crime.

Yeah, exactly. Kind of the old saw about the punishment suiting the crime, and all that. Oh, someone was a douche on the internet! Well, how about let's mock them on the internet? Fits the crime!

Sure, if someone makes what sounds like a threat to the President, they should get a knock on the door from the Secret Service. That's their job. But mobbing their boss with boycott threats is out of fucking line.

Wonkette gives us an update (http://feeds.wonkette.com/click.phdo?i=db5317b81864105f18217d2ebdf2efc4) on CEOs throwing tantrums over Obama being re-elected:

QuotePapa John's Pizza

John Schnatter, founder of Papa John's pizza, is LIVID and he is NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE. You want his employees to have health care coverage? Well FINE, he'll GIVE them health care coverage but it will cost you do-gooder liberals ten cents more per pizza, does that make you HAPPY? Actually, it might make you happy. We at Wonkette have concluded that we will pay ten cents more per pizza if it will ensure that the person making it is able to see a doctor when he gets sick. And we wonder why this didn't happen sooner, if all it took was ten cents more per pizza to get employee health care coverage. Is that really all it costs? Ten cents per pizza? If so, then maybe the CEO of Papa John's should have done this a long time ago. But again, this attitude is why we are not the CEO of a multi-billion dollar pizza company.

Olive Garden / Red Lobster

The CEO of this company is a real ball buster, and he is NOT going to make YOU pay ten cents more for a plate of noodles, no way Jose. That is a solution for pussies. This CEO is just going to cut back on employees' hours so that they work 29 hours per week instead of 30, exempting them from health care coverage mandate. So the next time you go to Olive Garden or the Red Lobster, rest assured that your server is not going to have health care coverage. There, does that make you feel better?

Hurricane Grill and Wings, and also some Denny's and Dairy Queen Franchises

John Metz is nobody's fool, so John Metz, CEO and owner of Hurricane Grill and Wings as well as some Denny's and Dairy Queen franchises, is going to pass the cost of Obamacare onto the employees AND the customer. "If I leave the prices the same, but, say on the menu that there is a five-percent surcharge for Obamacare, customers have two choices. They can either pay it, and tip 15 or 20 percent, or if they really feel so inclined, they can reduce the amount of tip they give to the server, who is the primary beneficiary of Obamacare," Metz told The Huffington Post. Metz is a WINNER, you guys, and WINNERS do not pay for the health care coverage costs of others. They make you, the customer pay for it (SUCKER) and if you don't want to, then YOU get to be a winner and make the waitress pay for it.

Applebee's

Obamacare is going to cost Applebee's "some millions of dollars" according to CEO Zane Tankel. Will these "some millions of dollars" be an increase in costs per year? Per month? Per restaurant? We don't know, and it's not important. What IS important is that Applebee's will not be able to build more restaurants, or create more low-wage go-nowhere jobs, THANKS OBAMA. The solution to these costs is for the CEO to take a hit on his $9.6 million dollar per year salary lay off employees.
Title: Re: Election Night. Gimme My Fix.
Post by: Mangrove on November 17, 2012, 04:16:48 PM
Ahh Papa John....you make billions of dollars a year and the Obamacare cost will only come to $8million which you could so easily afford. Oh, instead of giving away 2 million free pizzas as part of a celebrity endorsement, how about giving that money to your employees? No, wait...it's the $250 million class action lawsuit is what you're really worried about paying for.

No, but job creation did increase in the months leading up to Obama's re-election, when it was abundantly clear Romney didn't stand a chance in hell of winning.

But honestly, at least with the Papa John's guy, he seems like he's just being a loud blowhard asshat.  The best thing to do is not to give him that National stage bullhorn.  (I'm talking to you American media asshats!)

Boycotting them won't really hurt employees, though, because people who won't eat there will simply eat elsewhere and the jobs will be redistributed.

My thought is that if everyone who isn't eating there anymore sent the CEO a dime, he would have a physical manifestation of how much business he was losing. It would be a satisfyingly insulting way of flipping him off.

Best part: that government project was started under Bush.  You know, the once and former God Emperor sent to save Humanity, who failed so badly that he has been wiped entirely from the modern conservative memory.

Consistent conservatives, like Daniel Larison, criticized Bush for the program at the time and criticized Obama for continuing it, and then criticized conservative propagandists who tried to make out that Obama started the whole thing.  But the likes of Daniel Larison are very rare, unfortunately.

Get me a mailing addy.  :lulz:

I posted a link on facebook the other day saying that there was a black Friday boycott planned for WalMart.

Somebody asked me how that helps WalMart employees. WELL, LET'S SEE:

They're typically doing the work of at least three people (ever notice how WallyWerld always has 20 odd registers and never more than 3 or 4 open?) and they aren't paid commission, so the less sold, the easier it is for them to earn their cheapass paycheck

~AND~

Black Friday is living hell at ANY retail establishment. It sucks at RADIOSHACK.

So even if not enough people boycott to make a dent (which they won't) EVERY MOTHERFUCKER THAT STAYS AWAY MAKES THE DAY THAT MUCH EASIER.

I hate to even leave my house between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Although, since I celebrate the solstice, there's this hilariously surreal post-Yule gap where I'm all relieved it's over and everyone else is still all stressing about Christmas, it's pretty hilarious. On Christmas I used to hang out with my best friend who is Jewish, but now that she's married a Catholic I need to find some other heathen unbeliever to hang out with.

The question is, what will the aftermath of trump be like in either event?

He wins and sets a precedent for a future shitshow and people to be crazy.

He loses but did quite well so future candidates try their arm with the same shit and a few refinements. Next candidate ends up being Conrad black or similar.

Seriously, name a candidate that can't fly with this shit. If Don rickles tried it he'd at least do as well as this.

Romney's defeat can be spun any way by any faction in the GOP, meaning the answer will invariably come back to "MOAR IDEOLOGICAL PURITY", meaning the Tea Party may end up looking like the moderate wing of the party compared to what is coming.

I'd like to think I called current events.

Horning in on the prophecy biz, eh?

I figured you'd kneecap Nate Silver first.

Trump is, probably unknowingly, turning the Republican Party into the party of overt white nationalism.  That's where this ends up.

Oh, I have plans for that fucker.  Just as soon as he steps on his dick in a suitably triumphant fashion.
