Techmology and Scientism / Astronomy thread
March 06, 2012, 11:15:09 PM
Hey, I don't know what time it is or what your sky conditions are right now but Mars looks awesome right now. It's (the angle will change as the night progresses) right now about three fists length down and left from the Moon. You can't fucking miss it.
#153
This hawaiian thing- how would we go about it? Like lets take into the infinity of thoughts as an example. Mountains of norway become volcanoes of oahu thats easy. But musically- do we play it as is or do we make it happier sounding for humor value?
#154
So, I'm not sure a thread for this exists. What you do is post a screenshot of a wikipedia article where you find some obvious defacing.

Due to a thread on facebook, I decided to find the relative distances of Moycullen (the other guitarist's parents' hometown) and Clifden (my father's hometown) to Galway City in Ireland.

I found this:

What's wrong with this info? :lulz:

When i fucking want to thanks for asking.

Im poor. I dont want my kids to be poor.

Children annoy me. I mean i like em fine as long as i can give them back in a couple of hours. Small doses. I wouldnt be a good father at this time.

Im not married. I know thats not a requirement but its nice to have those legal protections in place.

Also i dont owe the world more people.

Also im only fucking thirty.

No you know what im infertile so stop asking.

Theyre playing american inspired country music in irish. They call it country and irish or something like that.

Well this song comes on and it sounds like typical nondescript country music. Catchy but you know just there.

And then i notice it. Autotune. In irish. For a country song.  Over the whole goddamn vocal track. Apparently nashville does ruin everything.

What is your scientific opinion on this oddity?
#159
This is some stupid blog shit.

So, we have all of the drum tracks down except on Stare at the Sun. For some reason Peter just can't nail it. Tonight was a night that we were to listen to the drum tracks for everything and get the last one done. All the other drum tracks were fine. And we've played this song at least 100 times. But for some reason, Pete just can't get it going. He was supposed to be done tonight and Villager was supposed to start her bass tracks.

Here's the thing. recording is always fun in retrospect. But it blows when you're actually doing it.

And, with Stare at the Sun, that is my signature song. I have to be there. I have to answer questions. I have to give direction. The most important directive I gave tonight was "two more takes, and we call it a night." I am a retard when it comes to percussion. All I need you to do is be a fucking metronome. But it doesn't work that way, does it?

We're going to nail it on Saturday. I can feel it. I just wish we could have tonight.

So i got myself registered to vote in the democratic primary for shits and giggles got myself a p.o. Box so i dont have to worry about my landlord's proxies from stealing my junk mail as evidence of me living there (its happened already) and now officially own my late uncles car. Next thing i have to do is clear some of my debt and spend as little money as possible and start thinking of getting the fuck out of here with our without pickles.

Im tired of skulking in the dark because i get home before pickles and dont want anyone to drop by and see someones there. Im actually killing unnecessary time at the bar because they were supposed to pick up their mail today. Fuck this shit. Time for an exit strategy.

So, let me ask you guys a question about a dilemma.

Imagine that you're about to look at some internet porn, rub a quick one out and go about your business for the day. You start browsing a particular category (nothing crazy, just a specific thing) and you see a video that looks promising. You click it and suddenly you realize that the girl looks a lot like your old high school crush that everybody including her knew you had a crush on. It's an amateur video so it's plausible. You stop thinking about that wank entirely and watch the video in certain parts over and over to find out if it actually is. You try and listen to the voice when she's talking, try to figure out the eye color, and no, it couldn't be it's just a doppelganger.... and then she smiles and it's all holy shit it totally is her.

Now with this 99.9999999985% certainty that it's her, what do you do? Do you tell her that her porn vid is online? I mean, you were that awkward guy in the friend zone that pined after her for what seemed like ages and now you know what her vulva and titties looks like, and if you tell her, then she knows that you know what her vulva and titties looks like. But she is still your friend, if in a mostly lost touch with but can communicate anytime easily sort of way.

Ladies, what would you like your friend to do in this situation?

Or Kill Me / So Roger, I've been looking around and
January 25, 2012, 07:27:49 AM
things just don't seem like they should be. Boston looks all funny. The buildings are in all the wrong places and the windows are bashed out, and I can't really remember when the last time I saw the sun was. Not that the skies are perpetually overcast, it's just that they seem to be. Strange people keep talking to me. Gods, near as I can tell, since they have that weird sort of voice like when they mask someone's identity on TV. Except that they're not even bothering to speak to me in English, but their strange divine language. I don't like what they're saying, as it seems that they're both confusing me from one of them or some sort of high ranking minion and that they're trying to convince me of something. Maybe I should be glad that I can't understand them. Their smiles are the worst.

The people aren't right either. They don't seem real anymore. They don't even seem like strange looking apes, but rather more like sleepwalkers. Meat machines. They don't really even feel anything or think anything. They're just convinced that they do. I'm like them of course. I'm not really here, if you get what I'm saying. I'm at the most a fleeting thought at any given moment. A computer with the screensaver on. But meat machine isn't really right either. The flesh is too transient. Now I'm simultaneously advanced and primitive, depending on your perspective - the same model of computer with software from 40,000 years in the future, and now 40,000 year old obsolescence. Funny how that works sometimes.

An echo of my uncle was in the network tonight, and it got me to thinking, (well as much thinking as things like myself are capable) how utterly ridiculous our existences are. In 100 years he'll just be a serial number in the junk yard. In 150 years, so will I. So will you and the rest of the spags here. So will Villager. Drove me mad for a split second (well, as mad as things like myself are capable) and almost said "whatever you say, dude, just make me like you and I'll buy whatever you're selling" to those those pesky deities.

Still can't understand what they're saying though.

It occurs to me it might be kinda interesting to have a song about you on cdgasm. Is this ok with you and would you like to contribute lyrical content for it?
#165
I think this is probably the right section for this. But do you know of any good resources i could look at to get better at the home recording thing? I can figure a thing or two out through trial and error but that can be a bit time consuming. I have really cheap equipment and audacity. I also have musicmaker but i find that a little tricky to work with. Not looking to make miracles but be able to make something decent sounding with what i have.
#166
So villager and i got tapped to play bass and guitar respectively for a local musician in two weeks and were practicing with him tonight. Hes going to give us some direction but we largely have free reign since the main focus is synth and vocals. Anyway hes thinking of going for a glam rock feel for this show.

So what are two or three songs that you think are stylistically representative of glam rock? I know thats a retarded question- if someone asked me the same about metal id call them daft but i dont really have a lot to go on atm.

Bring and Brag / Avariel
January 14, 2012, 03:42:33 AM
So im practicing with avariels bassist right now. Because in two weeks hes moving back to chicago and as a result the band is breaking up (his sister is the vocalist) their last show is in worcester tomorrow night and im playing rhythm guitar for especially alone. I suggest checking them out even though its quits. This is a band that couldve and shouldve made it. This isnt so mucha bring and brag for me so much as these guys are all my friends and its a pity. If anyone wants i can burn their album and send. Boston wont be the same.

For Villager

Little bit of back story: Villager's been my bassist for way longer than she's been my girlfriend, so I used to get her bass related stuff all the time. Then I did that once after we started dating and she forbade me to ever do it again since I'm not just her guitarist anymore.

You mean more to me than just a meat wallet
Sometimes you also go down and then swallow it
And now that it's come to that time of year
It's not just about banging you from the rear
Well I know you like history and I know you like science
And that you don't want any music appliance
So I got you two gifts that I thought worth giving
Both tell a story, but one's now not living

The gifts:
Life of Nobody
Tickets to the Pompeii exhibit at the Museum of Science

Its been discussed before but its good to reevaluate from time to time especially if were trying to bring some fresh discussion to the table.

I largely got into it for the jakes. Mostly to entertain myself and random people as well as get them to think more about themselves and their perceptions. Being here has expanded my reasons and i always find discussing it worthwhile when it does come up so lets give this another crack.

What does discordia mean to you?
Were there aspects of it that first appealed to you but no longer do?

MODERATOR NOTE: THREAD MERGE SNAFU! This thread is a little out of sequence. Nephew Twid's post belongs after the two posts which follow it.    -Cramulus

Interesting.

It's true that I'm 30 and unmarried because I didn't want to end up making a stupid mistake that ends in divorce, like what happened with my parents.

And, I do enjoy some of the same music that my parents do.

A funny moment happened when I was in high school and my mom was giving me a lift somewhere and Led Zeppelin came on the radio, and we both reached for the volume knob at the same time. We had a good laugh over that.

The opposite occurred when I was hung over and I woke up to this loud, hard to discern noise coming from the living room. I come downstairs to see what the fuck is going on cuz my head was pounding, and my stepfather is listening to my demo at full volume.  :lulz:

Aneristic Illusions / Boston silliness and MA hysteria
November 02, 2011, 05:00:57 PM
I thought I had made a thread to deposit lulzy Boston stuff. I probably stupidly put it in AT, where it would be impossible to find.

Anyway, I did the follow the links thing starting with the Los Zetas thread and ended up coming upon this:

http://westroxbury.patch.com/articles/fruits-and-vegetables-gang-back-in-the-police-log

West Roxbury is my home neighborhood, and I remember these guys being in the news, like, 7 years ago. Mind you, Westie is a mostly middle class to upper-middle class neighborhood. The only thing that keeps Westie from being a suburb is the fact that it a part of Boston. So, picture a bunch of well to do white kids that go to some of the city's best schools and work at Shaw's and Roche Brothers (supermarkets).

Not only is it funny that they haven't changed their name to something that doesn't imply that they're made up of comatose homosexuals, but that they identified themselves as members to the cops.

I'm imagining it going something like this:

Cop: Okay kids, why are we back at this party that apparently is too tame for us to bust up.
Fruit: Fuck off pig, don't ya know who we ahh?
Cop: A bunch of bored white kids hopped up on soda?
Vegetable: Nah, kid, we'ah the Fruits and Vegetable Gang. You scayad?
Cop:  :lulz:

This is not a call out, just a wake up in the middle of the night and go, "Oh yeah, that didn't get discussed, did it?" sort of realization.

We were to discuss the purpose behind the gold standard thing.

I know this is dragging you back into AI at a time that is probably not convenient for you, but I think that I am having a bit of a political shift (in a not surprising direction) but some of it does involve economy, which leads me back to the question- what's the point of basing currency off of an element that can be put to better, industrial use?

Does what it says on the label. Find something that causes you to scratch your head between 1980 and last year, post it here.

I'll start.

The Turbot War-

The gist of it: Canada and Spain have a dispute over fish. They apparently have a bloodless "war" over it in which Canadians arrest some Spanish dudes.
Apparently it is "fought" between an alliance of Canada, United Kingdom (a European Union member), Ireland (a neutral European Union member) and.... Spain and the rest of the European Union and Iceland. Apparent result? Well wikipedia says Spain is annexed by the Anglosphere, whatever the fuck that means.

Oh, and this happened in 1995.

Aneristic Illusions / Faust, explain this
October 20, 2011, 05:20:41 PM
Who is this man, and why does he have to tell us that he is a fine Gael? Is he trying to pick men up? Is he trying to show them he's both erudite and dares to dream, thus not relying on just being a fine Gael? And is he part of the homosexual agenda in their quest to destroy Ireland?

On a serious note, I see these posters all over the place. My sister and I are having a great laugh over it.

I posted this to facebook, but considering how much of a fan of Captain Kirk you are, I figured I would repost it here

Quote from: TwidQuestion. Going through the original series of Star Trek, I've noticed that Kirk always orders the helm to engage at warp factor 1. This is equivalent to light speed. That will get you nowhere slow. It takes a little over 4 years to get from Earth to Alpha Centauri. If they're on a 5 year mission to explore strange new worlds, they might get a couple of worlds, none of which probably have either new life or new civilizations, and considering how long the Federation has been in existence at this point, they are not boldly going where no man has gone before. How's that leisurely pace going, Kirk? /nerd

Or Kill Me / Law of Unintended Consequences
October 12, 2011, 07:08:34 PM
"....you are under arrest for the repeated muggings and theft of millions of Americans. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law...."

The CEO zoned out as he read the arrest order.

What the fuck happened?

Everything had been going right, and we were consolidating our power even further. The plutonomy was this close to being unassailable.

We had done everything right. We owned politicians, controlled the wealth, the means of production, got laws passed, propped up bullshit political movements and got people to buy into them, achieved corporate personhood....

We should have thought about all of the angles here. We shot ourselves in the foot. The law of unintended consequences. We should be more cautious in the future. There will always be some smart ass to find some sort of loophole in our loopholes. Now let's see what we can do about that Supreme Court ruling that snagged this whole thing up.

The CEO poured himself some scotch and turned on the news.

"Dozens of corporations have been placed under arrest in a strange twist on the idea of corporate personhood. The corporations are facing a variety of charges and potential sentences including being unable to conduct any business for 10-20 years, one is facing a life sentence, and one private security firm is facing being stoned to demolition and disincorporation by the Afghan government. We're not exactly sure how many rocks it will take to bring down their headquarters, but the State Department is expected to try and get the sentence reduced to monetary reparations."

I'm going to do it.

I'm going to watch the series finale of Enterprise.

I know it had so much potential.

But some how I need to see Frakes and Sirtis ruin a series more than the shittiest of shitty intro songs for a series that deserved, so, so, so much more, RIGHT NOW.

Actually thinking that with the right marketing and story-lines that Enterprise had the potential to be the best Trek....
