I have a 58 year old mid-life crisis junkie (everything the man owns has "Harley Davidson" embossed on it somewhere) who listens to Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh, until I smash his radio.

Yeah, I'd say 3/3 of him deserves it, then.

Today's quote:

Quote from: Filthy Assistant"I was listening to that socialist Obama talking yesterday while I was on my  way to the VA to get my prescription..."

aw, man...he's the "Keep your gummament outta MY MEDICARE" dude, ain't he?  blech.

Worse.  He's a "Keep the gubmint out of health care.  Except for me, because my case is different."

I do remember my mom and dad talking about the younger generations wanting their houses before they earned the $ to pay for them, and the cell phones and cars before they were paid off...but guess who bought their kids their 1st cars and gave my brothers cell phones before they were 16?

Uh huh.

Cell phones, I can see.  They actually serve a purpose.  The cable will be cut before my kids' phones are, as it DOESN'T serve a need.

Heh, it hasn't been explicitly hashed out very much, but there is definitely an implied assumption in all of our comforts and conveniences- that we somehow merit them.

Get the <insert luxury item> you deserve.

How many times have you heard THAT on the radio/TV/pop-up ad?  Why DO I deserve a Lexus?  What did I do to merit that?  My favorite one is for computers..."Even if your credit is bad, you can still get the computer you deserve."  If my credit is shitty, then I obviously don't deserve a damn thing, I'd think.

But it's damned effective advertising, in a nation full of people that honestly DO believe that they deserve any impulse item they see.

America does deserve something, though, and they're going to get it.  Hell, some people already ARE getting it.  You can tell who they are, too, by the "For Sale" signs stained in arterial blood out front of the McMansion they just HAD to have (because, one presumes, they deserved it.).

For 30 years, we've confused "want" with "deserve", and now it's time to pay the piper what HE deserves.

You're not trying to...comfort...me, are you, Rog?  :(

Everything will be okay.

Until it isn't.

But tomorrow never comes.

Until it does.

That's the only kind worth indulging in.

Yeah, we'll see how it affects my job performance today.  :lulz:

I've been tormenting filthy assistant for days about Palin's latest forays into commentary.

:D  <--- Shit-eating, self-satisfied grin.

I want an assistant!  I only have 2 hairball mongrels who don't give a shit about politics.

he's a representative of the constituents in his congressional district and is tasked to act in their best interests.  as a part of the nation, it is in their best interest to not run up huge deficits, so he votes against the bills.  but if the bill is passed, it is in their best interest to have the money that is being taxed from them returned to their district.

1.  He's a member of the federal house of representatives.  His job is to make decisions for the country.

2.  So a dog and pony show is good enough?  If there were principles involved, he wouldn't take the pork.  He would instead write legislation referring it to the debt, or to our infrastructure on the national level, and then make a big stink about it.  But why do that when you can vote against something you know will pass, take the pork, and then smirk and brag about how "fiscally responsible" you are?

Quote from: Iptuous on February 15, 2010, 06:28:10 PM
that is not at all justification for every pork barrel project.

It certainly is.  It is a cookie-cutter justification for any pork barrel project that you could name.

Quote from: Iptuous on February 15, 2010, 06:28:10 PM
what is your definition of 'pork'?  if a district has an urgent need for a project to be done that is to be paid for with federal funds and the representative earmarks some of them to ensure that it will get done, and not lost in the cracks waiting in line, is that pork?  note, that i'm not saying that's what all of his earmarks are for (i have no idea what they have been for), but i think there are legitimate reasons that a representative should work to ensure that some of the money is funneled to their district.

Perhaps you should look at where that $400Mn goes each year.  Or not, if the answers might shake your faith in the cult of Ron Paul.

Wanting someone to reign in the spending is a good thing.  Swallowing the lies of a fraud (because he at least mouths the words) is not.

(As a tangent, Bioshock's Fisher Price "My First Moral Quandry" tm, about whether or not you want to evicerate children to acquire resources.)

Those weren't children - they were fucked up, creepy, horrific little abominations that had to be destroyed at any cost!

Also, they didn't have the right values, so it's okay to kill them for their stored gene splice material.

I like the angle about moral absolutes in this.  The sense of "nazis are horrible, so doing horrible things to them is OK." seems to come up a lot recently.

That's a different kind of evil..."I want to hate and be on the side of the angels while I do it."

My dad went to Korea, his brother to Nam.
I've heard a lot about Korea. Nothing of Nam. Nothing, not a damn word.
Mention it and the man goes cold and quiet.

Yup.  My kids can't get anything out of my gf, either.  He changes the subject.

My great uncles didn't tell me shit til I was in the service, and likewise, I don't tell my kids much.  I'll talk more with my son when he finishes ROTC.

COMFORT FOOD + PARANOIA BOUT XENOPHOBIC SHIT = AMURRICAN WAY OF LIFE

Also,

Comfort cars that you can't afford (Those payments sure are comfy!).
Comfort homes on nice comfy mortgages (For two years, then comfy reality sets in.).
Comfort politics that are spoon fed to you (To save you the discomfort of thinking.).
Comfort Television that lets you be comfortably outraged.

I'm sure I've missed thing or three, but you get the point.

Polar bears have been known to eat people, so it saddens me to watch them die like this.
