Stay away from the prequels. they're booooooring.
Creatures of Light and Darkness is quite awesome, though possibly a bit out-there. Deals with rogue gods, genetic engineering, time travel, the whole weird gamut. Wonderful.
And he's got about a thousand short stories, ranging from brilliant to terrible. I just finished 'For a Breath I Tarry' and it was great, like the Book of Job with robots.
Jack of Shadows makes suicide hysterical, and its only a novella.
