Title: Bill Nye booed in Texas

QuoteBill Nye "The Science Guy" was booed in Waco, Texas for suggesting the Moon did not generate its own light, but reflected light from the sun.

Trouble started when the children's entertainer brought up Genesis 1:16, which reads: "God made two great lights -- the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars," and pointed out that the lesser light was actually a reflector.

At this point, several people in the audience stormed out, including woman with three small children who shouted, "We believe in God!" and left.

Nye was taking part in McLennan Community College's Distinguished Lecture Series, giving talks on global warming, Mars exploration, and energy consumption, but it was the moon thing that got them.

According to Morgan Matthew, "This story originally appeared in the Waco Tribune, but the newspaper has mysteriously pulled its story from the online version, presumably to avoid further embarrassment."

I'm okay with this, since these people are also likely not to believe in modern medicine.

1) The moon gives off its own light.
2) Therefore, God exists.
3) Profit.

I'm pretty sure it was the former.  I saw him debate someone on Larry King once, I think it might've been Ben Stein, anyway, you can tell the guy likes stirring up the bees nest.  That's a good thing of course.

What astounded me was that so many people actually believe the Moon gives off its own light.  Did they scrub that bit out from all of the Elementary Earth Science books in Texas?

Isn't the whole "project flat-earth" thing the Creationists are doing about banning Elementary Science and replacing it with Hans Christian Anderscience?

Maybe there's a generation of people who've never been exposed to the facts. I love this century :lulz:

Sadly, I would totally expect that your theory is the correct one.  Jeebus, maybe the sucky economy is good for us if it keeps stupid idiots from getting jobs that actually have an impact on the general public.

In response to the OP.

What the hell?!?!?

While the source of the Wave is from the sun the Photon is indeed produced by the moon. The biblical passage doesn't mention any Wave it mentions two lights. Broadcast light and reflected light (in reflected light the original photon is absorbed but the atom struck releases a photon with the same properties of the original) are very easily two lights.

What he should have said was the Sun IS a star.

I believe Texas is the only one allowed to do so, as apart of their deal with Honest Abe
for joining the Union over the Rebels

http://www.texassecede.com/faq.htm
QuoteThe South's rejoining the Union at the point of a bayonet in the late 1860s didn't prove secession is "not an option" or unlawful.  It only affirmed that violent coercion can be used—even by governments (if unrestrained)—to rob men of their very lives, liberty, and property.[6]

It bears repeating that the united States are "united" explicitly on the principle that "governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed" and "whenever any form of government becomes destructive to these ends [i.e., protecting life, liberty, and property], it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government" and "when a long train of abuses and usurpations...evinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government, and to provide new guards for their future security."

There is, evidently, a movement currently to try to introduce a secession bill for eastern Oregon and Washington... not from the union, but simply to form a new state. I'm completely in favor. They are functionally a different people on that side of the Cascades, they should have their own state and identity.

Actually, they can't succeed. I'll have to go find the link, but that wasn't part of the deal. It can split into four states if it likes, but can't leave the union. Why would Lincoln give them that option when there had just been a *war* about it? Texans are strange, strange people but they're not politically inept (Bush is a carpet bagger, while LBJ was born and bred in the Hill Country of Texas).

Why would Lincoln give them that option
he didn't he just didn't require them to change their state Constitution
thats why Waco is included in the brainwashing kit

@nigel thought it was eastern washington and to counterbalance the elephants would allow DC a few seats of donkeys
while it makes sense so say king country/seattle doesnt set policy for the entire state.
it does fubar things like food production, as the new state would be land locked yet growing things like apples for export

Why would Lincoln give them that option
he didn't he just didn't require them to change their state Constitution
thats why Waco is included in the brainwashing kit

@nigel thought it was eastern washington and to counterbalance the elephants would allow DC a few seats of donkeys
while it makes sense so say king country/seattle doesnt set policy for the entire state.
it does fubar things like food production, as the new state would be land locked yet growing things like apples for export
also would almost encourage the hong kong takeover of western ports

It's both Oregon and Washington, and a lot of landlocked states (which is most of them) export food just fine.

Hitler's actions from 1936 onwards were all designed to provoke war, and he got very angry when the Allies refused to play ball at, say, Munich.  Stropped around the place and shouted at people a lot.  Its very well documented, for instance, in Ian Kershaw's Nemesis, the comprehensive Hitler biography.

But then, Buchanan was never really much of a historian, just a weirdo Hitler and Prussian autocracy fanboi.

American history is distorted like a fun house mirror.  No, seriously.  Did you know that we won both wars with a tiny bit of help from our allies?  Also, we love to teach about the noble Native American, right up until we discovered oil in Oklahoma.  Then you never hear about them ever again.  Also, we didn't give those Indians smallpox-infected blankets, the British did.  Because the British were running things in, oh, 1820.

The Scottish Curriculum:

In Primary School:

Egyptians, maybe. But not much else.

In Secondary School:

The Great War (Covered in English class, via poetry)

The Industrial Revolutions (A big assed multi faceted look at the various different revolutions that get bundled under THE Industrial Revolution tag)

How is Edinburgh formed? (mostly the New Town development)

Voting reforms (mostly focused on the Suffragettes)

The rise of the Third Reich (From 1918 to 1939)

The Russian Revolution (from 1890 to 1924)

At least, that was what I had covered.

except the Europen History... huh, i don't even think that was offered separate from the World History (which was pretty much European History with little bits about non western civ)
That's definitely one thing i'm going to press hard for with my children's  education is that they have decent history taught to them.
Hell, I need to brush up.  Most of the history books I have read since high school are about specific facets of a time and place rather than an overview.
I feel the need to review the big picture so that I can place the various details properly....
Anybody got suggestions on a good World or US history "textbook"?

When you invade Minnesota, you'll be glad you sat through that.

Cainad,

I just spent 32 years reading every history book I could find.

I'm in the same tub, baker.
except the Europen History... huh, i don't even think that was offered separate from the World History (which was pretty much European History with little bits about non western civ)

For a slightly spooky and very engaging take on World War II, get Human Smoke by Nicholson Baker. Srsly.

I've heard that Guns, Germs, and Steel has received some criticism, and he does come to some pretty far-reaching conclusions, but if nothing else it was good for getting me to think about history in a global context.

That's all I've got off the top of my head.

We read chapters from this for a class in college: http://www.amazon.com/Human-Web-Birds-Eye-World-History/dp/0393925684/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1262711485&sr=8-1

You make a good point. I really ought to go back through and read the whole thing. It was well-presented and interesting, what I read of it, and it really couldn't hurt to have at least a tenuous grasp on history.

Re: Cainad's comment... I haven't read Guns, Germs, and Steel, but I hear it's great. It's on my To Read list.

I think the real value of an extensive high school history education, for me at least, is that it provides a basic imprint of history onto which I can apply more detailed information as it strikes my fancy to learn about it. I have a much better-developed sense of historical context, if not specific knowledge, than many people who didn't have the opportunities I had.

Also, LOL @ "excremeditation"

Problem:  Now I have a pretty good idea of what really happened, but it doesn't match up to what anyone else I talk to knows.  My old truths have been replaced by shiny new stories.

Maybe there's a generation of people who've never been exposed to the facts. I love this century :lulz:

In that sense it seems like the last few millenium though.

Fixed! "All of human existence" would have also been an acceptable answer.

Canadian history is awful and I'm glad I only had it for two years. There are downsides to living in a young, relatively peaceful country.

Actually I got pretty lucky through my schooling. In 8th grade my teacher told the class, "I'm going to teach you American History, and I need you to understand that it isn't all pretty. We have done some pretty terrible things, and I'm not going to gloss over that." We learned all kinds of things about what we did to the Native Americans. She was also specifically educated in World War Two history and taught shit at a Seminar in her spare time about the Holocaust. In tenth grade we went over World War Two again in pretty deep detail, not just the American bits; they even took us to see "Downfall" in the art theatre. And then my Eleventh Grade U.S. History teacher kind of moved past World War Two relatively quickly because he realized most of us had learned it several times and went on to talk about stuff post-WW2. We spent a pretty big section on Segregation and Jim Crow laws. Although I was kind of disappointed that all he mentioned of Reagan was the cold war and Reagonomics. I still need to do some more reading on what Reagan did.

Everything you need to know about Reagan can be summed up in Iran-Contra.

Or the ketchup thing, if you're good enough at Lo5ing it.

To be clear: the Gvt was under fire for not providing nutricious food in it's federal school lunch programs.  So, they declared that ketchup and relish were not condiments, but vegetables, so that a meal of french fries and ketchup could be classified as "healthy".
