Apple Talk / Re: Open Bar: Curbside Pickup Only
« on: February 25, 2021, 09:19:44 pm »
Progress is looking good, I have 850 of the 1500 I need at this point and I have the rest of tonight and most of tomorrow to get the rest.

Bonus; I get my credit card today. So I can start building credit. So if/when this runs out? I can actually get a place to live instead of having the unenviable combination of a job and nowhere that will accept my money, AGAIN.

So I can say two cities have been good to me now: Boston and Chicago. If you have to be homeless and you have a support network for basic survival needs and you are able to do honestly really fucking difficult things like acquire and maintain legal identification, I recommend those two cities over the rest of em out there.

I have good news.

Today, I learned I was accepted into a housing co-op in Chicago. Ongoing costs are affordable, so I am just trying to make 1500 for initial move in and month-of-March survival appear.

Presuming I can manage that, I have met and talked with the members and this co-op is extremely well suited to me. Homelessness beaten??? PERHAPS. Itís also located conveniently for my purposes, and has things like a HOUSEHOLD FOOD FUND.

But forget about that, it has a KITCHEN, so I wonít be spending 50 godforsaken dollars a day ordering food because I have no way of fucking cooking, the additional food savings from the household food fund are nothing, fucking pennies, by comparison.

Woot!

People often don't understand how much it costs to be poor.

A friend (thankfully nonjudgementally) asked me why Iíve been spending 30 dollars a bit under twice a day from this swanky hot dog place instead of just getting dirt cheap burgers from McDonalds.

She didnít realize I had been spending 50 dollars a day doing that, for about a month straight. Yeah, I save about ten dollars a day eating less healthy food that I am absolutely fucking sick of ó but thatís only if I eat all of the hot dog placeís food twice a day.

It actually lasts me one meal extra. Just a handful of leftover food to hit me for breakfast, and then if Iím careful I donít need to eat until dinner. Thatís about 10-ish dollars a day saved going for the fancy shit.

I wrote a whole bunch after this because I have a lot of vitriol stored up for the motherfuckers who say dumb shit about how Iím wasting my money, but I deleted it because Iíd hope everyone here knows better, except whatever libertarians we havenít chased away yet, who are simply too damn stupid to waste good rage on.

Thereís good news today, but after I got the good news I went scrolling through the job boards and noticed something strange.

There are SO MANY job listings. An unreal amount of them. Itís ridiculous. And I went and looked at them, and I noticed something very very strange.

Hereís an example. An ďentry levelĒ CSR position for a no name tech firm in Illinois. Starting pay: 24/hr. Remember: entry level customer service representative. Thatís a premium. And this company has good reviews on Indeed, so itís serious.

Requirements. 2 years CS experience, okay, thatís normal. SIX FUCKING YEARS of experience in the petroleum and wireless industries. That certainly fucking isnít.

The kicker is the number of positions open: 1.

This isnít an outlier. Most new jobs being posted are for single individual hires in ďentry levelĒ positions with incredibly weird and specific requirements, like an engineering degree for IT Helpdesk at a trucking company.

I have a suspicion the job market is currently being driven by COVID deaths, and theyíre trying to replace extremely specific people with cross-discipline skill sets rather than hire new blood. This is good news for me and bad news for everyone else.

I saw the funniest fucking thing imaginable today. In fact, just now.

On another forum, a thread was posted about Rush Limbaughís death and how great it is. Bunch of leftists and queers ó you know, freaks and deviants ó rejoicing. And some libertarian transphobe motherfucker comes in to say we should respect the dead.

Everyoneís been dunking on this guy, literally universally, for DAYS now, and one particular guy joining in made an awesome post with a sig saying that he was incapable of making good posts. I did a bit about extradimensional legal action, now itís ONE good post and it wonít happen again.

This libertarian motherfucker goes ďhow many have I made?Ē

Iím not going to answer him. I hope the thread dies with that as the very last post.

I thought you had a reason for doing it, because itís been locked since I saw your last post in it. Admittedly I was like an hour late to read it, but still, itís been locked since shortly after that post.

And Iíve been asking myself why youíd do that ever since, so, uh, that answers my original question.

Find your local queers, first of all. Like, thatís literally the very first step. I didnít do that and I had no support network, just years of free fall. Only knowing them through the internet is fine, but the important thing is finding the queers who are local to you. Do not be like me and assume internet queers are enough, you need the locals so you can hear who the bigots are and how to go shopping in the wrong part of town and not get clocked (trust me, now that youíre queer and aware of it, thatís an actual concern you have to have, even if you think nothing has changed).

Next, do your research. Do not trust medical resources that arenít on queer-friendly websites. There are literal centuries of misinformation and demonization about queer life (and Iím not just talking about sex) that you need to sift through, and trust me when I say that you canít do it. Youíre too new to this, you have no way of doing it. EDIT: saying this so you know why you have to pick where your research comes from VERY carefully.

After that, your local queers got this. Theyíve babysat other newbies, theyíll keep you on track.

If youíre talking about very real life-or-death survival, this is super simple. Just lean into the ďtough guyĒ aesthetic hard. Get a bunch of milsurp, grow one of those dumb survivalist beards, buy a gun or at least talk a lot about buying a gun. This is what I do, you know how many people gaybash me? None. Because no one fucking knows Iím not a chud, when I walk around with my desert sand Hazard4 backpack and MOLLE-laden thigh pouches. I have to warn fellow queers about me when they meet me for the first time, but thatís a small price to pay for being functionally immune to RL bigotry.

Also, youíll spend less on clothes. The milsurp is cheap and lasts forever. Goes double on the lasts forever part if you buy ďtacticalĒ stuff: 5.11 Tactical is overpriced but indestructible, Rothco will have your back for everything except for boots, and UTG/Leapers bags are literally impossible to destroy. I have one that has survived being dragged two miles down a freeway, run over by a truck, multiple drenchings in heavy rain, etc. ó and if I got a can of computer duster it would look like new.

If you lay on your sarcastic asshole impression thick when approached by chuds, you also manage to get them to avoid you like the plague without becoming a target of theirs.

I can confirm. I went a mere 6 months stuck on my phone in 2020 and it nearly killed me.

It started at the fingertips, and crept up my arms: heavy bruising and what looked like spider bites. By the time I got out of Texas, people were complimenting me on my weird PCB trace tattoos, and by the time I got a laptop again the red marks had started to sprout little WiFi antennae.

Having no healthcare, I had to bribe a surgeon in Chicago into surgically excising the communications circuitry spontaneously growing in my limbs and replacing my now ruined muscles with vat-grown chimpanzee biceps.

The bruising has mostly gone away, but the surgeon said that if Iíd gone another 2 months theyíd have to behead me, hook me up to a massive machine with a bunch of Tesla coils on it and do the whole brain transfer thing like in bad 50s scifi movies. Itís real, by the way.

So I have to agree that EoC couldnít have possibly been entirely without a computer for almost a full year. At least regular computer exposure would be required.

Yeah, thatís basically what I was worried about.

I have other questions, but theyíre not really your deal at this point and also I donít want to ask those questions in the clear. Thanks, Cain.

EoC was Running From Mexico at the time, to be fair. I donít think itís fair to put all of this on him, he had quite enough to deal with at the time.

I can honestly see them going the way of the Law and Justice Party in Poland or Fidesz in Hungary - both manage an extremely conservative/reactionary social agenda with a racialised welfare state approach. In the case of Fidesz, this has created even more opportunities for graft and corruption among the politically connected and has additionally allowed them to create economic incentives for their preferred social agenda, such as tax breaks for larger families and married couples.

This is basically what I was thinking. If Iím not mistaken, Fidesz in particular is functionally a modern day Fascist party?

I have one for this too.

With the Republicans moving to left wing economics tied to racist legislation now (see Romney and Cottonís latest bill), what does this say about the future of the Republican Party in the US? Just... a best guess. Based on historical precedent. Not looking for a crystal ball here.

I have a theory, but I donít have as much background with this stuff as you do, and this seems to be specifically and explicitly your wheelhouse if Iím seeing whatís happening correctly.

Iíve been homeless again. Right now I have no internet (on my phone here) and so so so much free time in an unfurnished basement (my joints are death and if I had 500 dollars Iíd be buying some of that ultra light camping equipment to get a chair, table and cot because lord Iím desperate rn) so Iíve been playing Tyranny finally.

I actually REALLY like the worldbuilding. Like... itís obviously a pretty crap CRPG in gameplay terms, but the worldbuilding is really well done. Of course, the worldbuilding is also sort of a blatant pastiche of BioWare and Bethesda properties, so it sort of was inevitable that it would be good.

The plot isnít too bad either: incompetence, selfishness and egotistical bullshit is the order of the day, just like real life.

Most interesting of all to me, I actually... donít really hate Kyros? Thereís a lot of weird shit about that. I donít really know how to feel about it.

Iíve also been playing more Phoenix Point, which is really worthwhile for anyone who likes Firaxis XCOM type gameplay, but wishes it was a bit more detailed and nuanced. No XCOM classic level, but still, not insignificant amounts of added control.

I find the smaller maps and shorter mission structure greatly benefits it as well compared to the XCOM formula. Itís at its slowest in the story missions, but the most tedious Phoenix Point mission is an order of magnitude more sensible than the snappiest XCOM 2 mission.

An example: Clearing the Phoenix base in the tutorial (the most mindnumbingly tedious mission Iíve played so far) compares favorably to XCOM 2s Operation Gatecrasher ó the NON tutorial one. Yes, really.

Thereís also some really good sorta zone defense type missions and while there are definitely rough edges and itís obvious the developers were not able to include everything they wanted, it STILL stands out as an impressive game to me. And thereís more DLC to come besides.

If it included the XCOM 2 character pool and allow for full visual modification of your troops like in XCOM 2, I think it would handily beat that game.

Think for Yourself, Schmuck! / Re: How to tell if you're in a Cult
« on: February 07, 2021, 08:19:41 pm »
This article is shit.

There is one and only one good way to tell if you're in a cult. There are two steps:

Do they want to control your actions and beliefs? If some things are forbidden to say, think or do, that's a red flag. Yes, "initiations" that include this but leave full members free to think/act/say what they want count as red flags as well. EXCEPTION: saying, thinking or doing extremely harmful things. If the end result of your thoughts, actions or words is harm to others, any group is right to shut that shit down. Watch what happens if you spout some Nazi shit round these parts, for instance.

Do they leave open the possibility of being wrong? Note: they might say so and yet move goalposts. If they move goalposts for what constitutes them being wrong, and/or shut down any hint or suggestion they might be wrong, that's a red flag. There are NO exceptions. No one is right all the fucking time, end of story, and anyone claiming to be or making themselves out to be is something to run from if at all possible.

If you have both, it's a cult. Yes, this encompasses most organized religion, many political movements, etc. What most people think of when they think of "cults" is cults focused on short term gain/solutions. But these other groups use the exact same tactics to much longer term ends -- political control, societal influence, legacy. Ditch them all, you'll be better for it.
