Title: Eris' Nose-thumbing
Post by: hooplala on February 13, 2008, 05:11:33 AM
Anyone ever notice in this classic image of Eris (seen below) that she seems to be thumbing her nose, in that "NYAH NYAH" sort of way, like Karl Rove is illustrating even farther below?

All I know is, we've had this game going where a bunch of us on campus have god powers and I had wind / ice / snow / frost etc. which was really OK until somebody else wanted in, and this girl gave him chaos. I definitely wanted chaos.

Only, then it occurred to me that my having chaos as my god power would be too predictable, and it's far more in the spirit of discord for me to not have chaos.

So in short, yes, I see your point.

you've managed to thoroughly lose me. Im battling to see the correlation between god-powers (on campus) and the pics of Eris clearly making fun of some poor sod.

It's not just the thumb to nose but the sideways look she gives with that smirking smile.

QuoteQueen Anne's fan

Ever wondered what you call the gesture of putting your thumb to your nose and wiggling your fingers in an insulting manner? It's called Queen Anne's fan (or "cocking a snook", or "the five-fingered-salute", or the "coffee-mill" or "pull-bacon"). A study showed it to be Europe's best-known gesture. It is first recorded under this name when Anne reigned – 1714.

Got to be honest, though, I've never heard the expression before. But I think I might start using it now. ALSO how do you get "pull-bacon" from the gesture . . .

It is a well known fact, so well known that it is stereotypical, that the British are pretty naff at languages. This merely compounds our linguistic incompetence and indicates that it isn't just foreign langauges that we are shit at, but our own dear mother tongue as well.

My personal excuse is that I could never afford to buy an anglophone. I have to make do with two tin cans and a ball of string.

* A man came up to me in a pub and whispered "D'ya wanna buy some pornography?" "Nah," I whispered back "I haven't got a pornograph to play it on"
/excuse for very old very crap joke

I'm an American. That means, by definition, I speak a bastardized patois of English and best, and I can't be bothered to know all these high-falootin' technical terms.
