Messages - Captain Utopia

You know - if PD were to ever go a week without some amazing piece of writing, or other form of creative genius - that would be a good time to talk about changing it.  Honestly - I am looking for different formula at EB&G, but that's because it does have such barren weeks, and there is no point trying to replicate PD when it's already here.  Think you know how it should be done?  Come over and show us your chops.  But try it here and I'll have little sympathy for you at the bottom of the dogpile.

Is there any region between the either/or of "rock n roller" and "delicate hothouse flowers", where we can not be shitheads to one another and still stay afloat?

The evidence suggests not.  There are - to my mind - 3 basic mindsets:

1.  Rock N Roller.

2.  Monkey.

3.  Self-Appointed Protectors of Monkeys.

Where #3 is also a monkey?

Until they learn to stand on two feet, I see myself at war with the monkeys - I'm not trying to protect them.

A real council of war has the advantage of hierarchy, and while none of us has solved the problem of how to coordinate a jailbreak without alphas, I'm positive that in-fighting/flinging shit at each other does not make us that much different from the monkeys who happen to be on the other side of our cage.

50% of posts being bitching would be a fucking GODSEND compared to this 169% STUPID FUCKING FLIRTATION.

Too much fluffing, not enough content.

All of you will betray me, before that cock crows.

So who is it?

My preference would be to not start a lynch mob at this point until some facts are known.  However, if this is for real then this would be a suitable reaction:

Well, a lot of people do get sick of it.  There haven't been as many ridiculously long flounces as of late, but I attribute that to mere addiction.

there actually have been a lot of silent flounces, or just decreased posting

I've talked to a lot of people over the last few months who feel like this place's vibe is not conclusive to the kinds of discussions/community they want to participate in. I am going to get myself in trouble for naming names, but off the top of my head - eve, burns, fred, badge, kel, enki, rumckle, net, cainad, captain fruitopia, ratatosk... definitely more.. All of them have mentioned to me how the negativity and shitting on others discourages them from posting. Or how they got frustrated that a potentially interesting thread was reduced to telling people why they're wrong or stupid. I also don't feel like it's something I can do anything about, talking about it tends to make people defensive, and frankly I'm already sorry for bringing it up.

Frutopia?  That besmirches the solemn dignity of my name  :argh!:

Well, I was hoping to stay out of this thread, and it would have passed me by altogether if it weren't for Uncle Charley.. but since my private thoughts have been used-by-proxy it would be cowardly not to say something.  I can't deal with drama.  Hell, I can't even troll for more than a little while before all the pretend drama gets to me.  I used to think I could deal with it, but then I noticed a strong correlation between drama and my not being as patient a husband and father as I want to be.  That sucks, but it's not a hard choice to make.

So now I avoid drama, by avoiding drama.  Okay, I went over that a little quick, so let me back up.  If there's some drama in a thread and my involvement isn't going to magically cure it - i.e. all of the fucking time - I just... avoid it.  No, no, I've rushed through that again haven't I?  Right so, I noticed that pretty much all of the fights and drama I got myself involved in here was... when I was busy complaining about the drama.

I am the people I was warning you about!

Two separate issues - Horrorology and Negativity.  Yeah, it pisses me off sometimes when a pet optimistic narrative gets crushed, but I don't see that as much a function of Negativity, as much as I do the pure strength of the writing that's been happening with The Spider Project and Horrorology.  A forum has bottlenecks and hubs through which concepts and ideas flow.  Can you have two strong opposing concepts in the same forum?  Maybe.  Can you develop them simultaneously?

Negativity.  Meh.  Forums flow.  I'll complain about it to anyone who'll listen when it gets bad.  That's how they flow.  I don't like dog-piling, but sometimes it is necessary.  But the reason I don't think I ever complained about Roger manning the Intro thread battlements is because without such efforts I think would be quickly overrun by a pineal horde.  Stabbity indeed.  It's a valued service, and I believe I said as much in our chat, Cram.

It's a complex, sensitive issue, which sprays more shit than a diarrhoetic drama llama, and exactly the sort I've been trying to avoid.

I only want to say one thing more - I haven't spoken to any other of The Named, but please don't assume anything about them based on this.
Sure - but we already have this to a certain extent.  But if you weren't available, or if they wanted to take it in a different direction, then a reference becomes handy.

I've started filling out a new section for capabilities.

As you can see, it's moving more in the direction of providing support for multiple smaller projects, rather than a BIP 2011 megaproject or somesuch.  Not that I'm against the latter, but the former looks to be more easily achievable at this stage.
That's a good question.  The first milestone is, as LMNO described it, a reference or project-building foundation.  I want to start such-and-such a project, okay - I'll contact these people directly.  The wiki is nicer to keep track of that since there is no bottleneck, and people can just add or remove themselves without needing a caretaker.

To some extent we're already there.  But knowing that there are 21 people interested in #2 only has limited usefulness since it can be interpreted at least three different ways, and there is not necessarily any active-interest transference between them, despite being members of the same broader category.

I'm thinking along the same lines of the locality project at EB&G: where you have people in cities and different areas planning a bunch of different things which interest them personally, but where expertise is more easily shared between people in different areas due to the explicit focus on that.

Cheers!  In fairness, it was cobbled together from other peoples stuff I've read here, mostly Roger.
