If you say it out loud, it's shorthand for "please punch me in the face".

A spell of evocation really.

Which is the weakest spell school. Tisk Tisk.

I don't quite understand the fixation on the concept of memes. I've read people talking like spreading a meme is equivalent to casting a spell. Is it just dreams of relevance?

QuoteA new law in Michigan will prohibit local governments from banning, regulating or imposing fees on the use of plastic bags and other containers.

How many different levels up are possible? Can you pass a law banning banning banning plastics?

Speaking of DNN's Nvidia, The cornerstone of pretty much everything that's happened the last couple of years, the same way intel was the foundation of the information revolution, are poised to give us 40+ years worth of Moores law progress in the space of a couple of months by refining architecture instead of metal.

The downside is more presentations featuring the eminently uncharismatic Jen-Hsun Huang

So Google has been making TPU's their own custom hardware for their tensor flow framework. Nvidia has these machine learning chips you linked. IBM is back in the hardware game with their new power9 chips. Meanwhile what is Intel doing?

Crammulus you are pretty much right. The learning can only really figure out the most probable response.

However it very well might have a variable cordoned off for certain words that it itself assigned. For both the K-Means and SVM machine learning (for more general DNNs this may or may not be true) you figure out the most probable response after chucking your input off to a different vector space with thousands of dimensions (even infinite with Hilbert Spaces) and then do the clumping there and then map the info back. While its in that other space there very well maybe a specific dimension for the concept of a dog. That slot for the concept may even be language agnostic if they feature extract the language out before chucking the input into the algorithm.

I probably explained that poorly.

One man's intuition is another mans complete inability to explain his own thought process.

Lots of people don't vote because they don't feel like its very effective, and they are right to feel that.

And that's how they get the government they deserve.   :lulz:

Now I feel a bit foolish. Of course taking the ~20 minutes to vote is worth it. It is more effective than other things you could do in that time. I should have just said that they don't feel like its effective but not said they were right to feel so. I guess I am prone to defeatism.

It doesn't really matter.  The right is in lockstep (or goose-step, take your pick), and the left all hate each other...So under our system, the right will gain more and more power, until they don't feel the need to continue our system.  There is no good ending to this.  It's irreversible.  We doktors know a hopeless case when we see one.

Follow question is what conditions are necessary for the left to actually band together? Might also be worth asking where to put classical liberals on the binary spectrum.

Lots of people don't vote because they don't feel like its very effective, and they are right to feel that. Those who are very adamant or radical are more likely to vote in this system. This causes racists and others at the margins to be over represented. That's not particularly great.

At the same time there is the notion that real change happens from the bottom up. If you make something genuinely be the opinion of society then eventually it will be law. I like the knowing vs being told comment earlier. It might be the barrier in communication.

Unfortunately with the current voting system we may have to get to the point where the racists aren't just a minority but a vanishingly small minority to overcome the over representation.

I'd just like to go on records and call this Raz fucker out on being a troll. If it turns out I'm right, I'll look wicked smart and y'all will revere my near-supernatural powers of perception. If I'm wrong, what the fuck, it's just P3nT talking shit as usual, right?

Fuck you, Raz, you're just DK proxying an alt!

Are the sock puppets really worth it? Hypothetically speaking of course.

When you are siphoning that much money into tax havens and shell corporations one has to wonder how the oligarchs plan to cash it in. With so much money in all of their back-pockets how do they not flood markets when they want to grab actual goods? Does every political crisis get turned into an opportunity for privatization? The truth may be uglier than I want to acknowledge here. Also assuming that they are really thinking through their actions and have a plan.

Yes. It really doesn't seem all that far out there. Though I do love open source and I am sure it will always be viable going forward. I also feel that it will also always be plagued by being slightly less user friendly.

QuoteA UC Berkeley Law study found [Restorative Justice for Oakland Youth] RJOY's 2007 middle school pilot eliminated violence and expulsions, while reducing school suspension rates by 87 percent. After two years of training and participation in RJ practices, whenever conflict arose, RJOY middle school students knew how to respond by coming to the RJ room to ask for a talking piece and space to facilitate a circle. Today, at one of the RJOY school sites, student suspensions decreased 74 percent after two years and referrals for violence fell 77 percent after one year. Racial disparity in discipline was eliminated. Graduation rates and test scores increased.

Interesting side note from the article is that it seems as though the Center for Disease Control funded some studies on violence. Are they treating violence as a spreadable disease? Seems like an interesting thought.
