Quote from: 'Ale'
I don't know if discordianism is right any more than any other way of dealing with life, but it is interesting and it allows for some of the stupid shit that doesn't seem to me to work otherwise.

That's the meaning I got out of the PD too, I think you have got the meaning, but all interpretations are equally meaningless.

Quote from: 'GA'Saying one thing is a part of another thing is a form of categorization, JSYK.

I meant the emphasis to be on 'everything', but in any case, categorising to me implies that I'm one thing is that and that's it. I was actually saying that parts of the Summa seemed to me to fall victim to the Eristic Illusion, I wasn't making any grand proclamations or anything.

Quote from: 'GA'But why are you so worked up about whether something is eristic or aneristic or not?  I can't imagine how you can enjoy being a discordian if you're always checking to make sure that you're acting the way a REAL discordian should act.

Dunno how the emotion comes over in a thread post, but I'm not 'worked up' and second, I'm not a 'discordian', I read the principia and find some of it's ideas interesting, I want to find out more. But less 'Summa'-ish and more 'Principia'-ish. That's all.

Quote from: 'Ratatosk'Both perceive only a small part of the Universe, the ordered bits or the disordered bits. Those plagued with the Aneristic delusion are often grey and boring cabbages. Those plagued with the Eristic delusion are often pink and boring Pinealists. Pranks, Jakes, Mindfucks are useful against both. The idea of pranks, jakes and mindfucks are not usually to say "You are WRONG, I am RIGHT". Rather, a good mindfuck/jake/prank should make the individual consider/perceive/realize something new, something they may not have experienced before, piercing the veil that once clouded their sight. It may not support order over disorder or disorder over order... it may simply excite the imagination of some poor Cabbage in the Land of Thud. [/quote

I'm gonna check out the Mindfuck forums and see what the story is there, see what I got wrong, if anything and then I'm also gonna read some more, but I expect I'll come back to this topic at some stage, so I'll see you all there when I do.

Quote from: Dalta on May 05, 2009, 11:31:37 PMThey seem like Eristic Illusions, praising disorder over order when both are actually the same and just serve to cover up the underlying chaos.

Categorizing everything into Eristic Illusion/Aneristic Illusion is part of the Aneristic Illusion.  Just saying.

You're letting your Pental rule your Pomal.

I'm not categorising everything, I'm looking at the mindfucking and stuff and it seems to clearly be part of the Curse of Greyface. E.g.: 'omigod, omigod, fucking cabbages, gotta mindfuck them, gotta fuck with them, order/christianity/conservatism is bullshit, gotta win, gotta show them I'm better', blah blah blah, generally taking life a bit too seriously and not seeing it for the pure chaos that it is.

Putting their grid of 'Discordianism is right' onto the chaos, as it were.

Thanks guys for all the suggestions. Right now I'm reading Cat's Cradle, thought I should take a wee break from two days staight of Discordian reading. I think I'll go to the BIP after that, perhaps then the Apocrypha, then start asking questions.

What do you mean when you say 'DO' and you will learn? Pranking, Mindfucking? They seem like Eristic Illusions, praising disorder over order when both are actually the same and just serve to cover up the underlying chaos. And I plan to start 'writing' soon, once I get a firmer idea of what I actually think about all this.

Would the subgenius and pastafarians, being different religions, not have different philosophies? I was looking for, like, explanations and general theorising about Discordian concepts.

Also, I read the 'List of Discordian books' (or similar title) thread at the top and they were saying that there's no point in reading RAW, is that bogus?

Thirdly, in that same thread, I got this list:

QuoteThe Summa
The Apocrypha
The Zenarchist CookBook
The Book of Eris

The Metaclysmia Discordia
The Wise Book of Baloney
The Apotheosis Psychoerotica
The Principia Entropius

Memoirs of a Daydreamer
The Jonesboria Discordia
A Pocket full of Chaos

I read the first one, The Summa and that made me doubt the worth of the rest. What would you say?
Thanks for the info.

Ale: Yeah, ok, if I see someone for whom I think the Summa will be useful, I'll recommend it, but I was looking for what I said I was looking for, I'd be happy to discuss the worth or ortherwise of the Summa in a seperate thread.

Hey, I just read the PD and found it interesting in many respects, I was looking to delve a bit deeper into Discordianism, read interpretations texts perhaps, or texts about it in general, perhaps one about 'practical Discordianism' (if such a thing is possible, I'm still debating myself about that).

I also read the Summa Discordia but alot of it seems to contradict the PD, seems to fall victim to the Eristic illusion nearly completely. Perhaps there's something which stays true to the teachings of the PD, if one might call them that?
