We fight the battle that we cannot win.
For who can defeat the World itself?
Yet we trudge along, unwilling to accept defeat.
For defeat means the end of us all.
We do not know how this started,
In what depths this monster was spawned.
Far from the reach of light, from warmth and love.
We do not know when it first came.
As we stand on the threshold,
between this World and the true World,
Our liminality the reason it hates.
The reason it would destroy us.
Enemy after enemy is sent out way,
each one to be destroyed.
We stand triumphant, only to stand
on a field of corpses.
They come on, a never ending stream
a torrent of destruction.
We hold for a while, hold back the flood.
But in the end, we know we will be swept away.
The Terror of Death descends,
lifted only for us to find
The Mirage of Deceit upon us.
Clouding our way.
Then The Propagation comes,
infecting more of our home.
The Prophet, foretelling our doom,
will meet his own, at our cost.
The Machinator devises the plan of our fall,
sowing fear and discord.
The Temptress gives us hope,
only to dash it against the rocks.
The Avenger comes then,
to redeem his fallen kin.
The Rebirth occurs,
and we know not how to fight.
We stand on the Threshold,
balance on the edge of the knife.
To stray but a little way,
means the ruination of our land.
The Infection begins to spread,
And the Mutation it undergoes leaves us aghast.
The Outbreak is so sudden, we cannot act.
And the Quarentine comes almost too late.
But price was bitter,
paid with blood.
The corpses of comrades,
a sacrafice too dear for words.
And then the sleepers awaken,
the stricken arise.
The Wave is defeated.
The World may yet Heal.

Also, I've recently re-read a collection of Niven stories, and I suggest that if there is ever Discordian Convention that we are both at we settle this with the weapons being Champange bottles at two paces, and then drink the propellant.

I was in a .hack inspired mood last night, and tried to emulate Emma Waylant's style of writing, to failure. I need to reread the Epitaph of Twilight some more.
