Title: Webcomics
Post by: EraPassing on December 01, 2004, 04:07:01 AM
Anyone know any webcomics that they'd highly recommend to me?

I'm already keeping tabs on Something Positive, Friendly Hostility, Two Lumps, Fallen, and Grayling.

What are you into? Geek comics? Roleplaying comics? Things that fuck with the fourth wall? Slice-of-life comics? Silly ones with animals?

In the meantime, I'll grab my comic links and post every fifth one:
Schlock Mercenary (http://www.schlockmercenary.com) is a sci-fi comic about a mercenary company. Not so many one liners but has fairly engaging stories.

Freefall (http://freefall.purrsia.com/) is more sci-fi. vaguely engaging plots but I read it mostly for the lovely characters.

The Whiteboard (http://www.the-whiteboard.com/) is my favourite paintball comic. YMMV.

Jack (http://www.pholph.com/) is about Death, who is a bunny-rabbit and lives in Hell. Sometimes (often?) has themes and images which may not be suitable for the entire family. I have a sort of love/hate thing going on with this one.

Ozy and Millie (http://ozyandmillie.org/) is often a bit mediochre but occasionally brilliant.

Gin and the Devil (http://www.ginandthedevil.com/) is kinda new but I am liking it so far.

Red Meat (http://www.redmeat.com/redmeat/current/) ranges from ignorable to delightfully fucked up.

If you like messed up stuff, try the archives of PLIF (http://www.plif.com/) or Flem (http://flem.keenspace.com/).

All of them, thank you.  I'm too new to this webcomic addiction thing to know where my interests will eventually lie.  Also, I have the sneaking suspicion that in this, like in music and other arts, there can be found gold hidden in layers of muck.
Thank you very much for your links, too.

What exactly is meant by "the fourth wall"?  I've seen that phrase used, but I couldn't puzzle it out based on the context.

The first is about internet roleplaying chat (like we don't roleplay here).
The second is really weird.
Hotsuma, don't read the third one.  It is about a girl with a secret. (and a paradox that you don't like)

Are there any elves in those, aini?  I really, really do not like elves.  I'm not hot for any of the Fae, but especially not elves.

Sluggy Freelance (http://www.sluggy.com) is pretty good, and relatively low on elves (besides, once the North Pole is invaded by aliens, that problem is solved). The last couple years or so have been a little slower, but the first 5 years are comedy gold.

KITTENS! *runs*

As someone else already posted, Penny Arcade and Eight Bit Theater are fuggin hilarious. PA is really only any good if you keep up with video gaming, although I suppose there's enough non-game humor to be worth a try (I am the King of No Pants!). Eight Bit Theater is funny whether you're a geek laughing at yourself or a non-geek making fun of geeks. And Goths WANT to die, so we should help them along.

If you find something(s) that grab your interest, post them here and I'll try to throw a few more suggestions of similar sorts of things at you.

Quote from: EraPassingWhat exactly is meant by "the fourth wall"?  I've seen that phrase used, but I couldn't puzzle it out based on the context.

Comics have three 'walls' that you can see: left, right and the back of the panel. To 'break the fourth wall' refers to those times when the characters talk directly to the audience or the writer. If the comic was a movie, the 'fourth wall' would be where the camera was.

Real Life (http://www.reallifecomics.com/) and No Fourth Wall to Break (http://no4thwalltobreak.keenspace.com/) are examples of Web comics where this sort of thing happens frequently.

::agrees with Schweinepriester::

Also, there's a few comics at http://atomictoy.org that might be of interest.  Buttlord GT is by far the longest, and screws me up for days after reading it.  Stinkykick is equally good, and even better for strange phrases to annoy your friends with.  Much is the "yo".

You read S*P and DON'T read Queen of Wands (http://www.queenofwands.net) or /usr/bin/w00t (http://www.w00t-comic.net)?!

Oh, and Chopping Block (http://www.choppingblock.org) is back from the dead.  I like that one too, though I wish he'd archived his rant from 9/12/01. :D

Yall rock.  I've got enough webcomics here to last me well into the new year, even if some of them turn out to not be my thing.

If anyone cares - Grayling is art.  Not just a webcomic - freakin' art, yeah.

http://www.yellow5.com/pokey requires a zen-like state of mind but when you acquire that, it's magical.
http://www.angryflower.com is just great. Especially the older ones, nowadays I feel it's too much about politics.

I wouldn't normally recommend this, but check out PVPonline.com (http://pvponline.com/) today.

No, not the comic.  That still sucks.

The little "rant" underneath it, and the Non-Sequitur cartoon accompanying it.

Mmm, Schadenfreude.  Scott Kurtz is such a dick.  I'm glad he feels the need to shriek and hoot and alert the rest of the world to his dickliness.
