Title: Roger/Waffle pointlessly pushing iron up in the air thread (warning: geekery)
Post by: The Good Reverend Roger on August 26, 2014, 08:13:45 PM
3 weeks in, arms like painful noodles.

How often do you work out a week, to get the results you got over the last year?

Since january, I've been working out three times a week. I still feel like a tenderised piece of steak after heavy days.

I had to manually translate and write up the following, so I really hope it's at least a tiny bit interesting.  :lulz:

A typical week might look like this:
(lbs x reps (x sets if several sets are the same weight))
(assistance/isolation exercises are sets x reps)
Monday

Squats: 165x3, 192x3, 210x3, 220x3, 236x2, 247x1, 254x2, 265x2, 276x2x2
Bench: 88x6, 132x5x3, 148x5x2
Elevated stiff leg deadlift: 93x5, 110x4, 115x3, 121x3x2

Bent over rows: 3x10
Thigh/leg curls:  3x12
Lateral raise: 4x8
Skullcrushers: 2x8, 3x6
Seated rows: 4x10
Bicep curls: 4x8

Wednesday

High-bar squats: 110x4, 132x4, 143x3, 148x3, 159x3x2
Narrow grip bench press: 66x10x2, 99x6, 121x5x5, 132x3
Deadlift: 210x6, 242x4, 258x3, 276x3, 298x3x2
Military press: 44x8x2, 66x5x2, 88x5x2

Dumbbell bench press: 3x6, 2x5
Dumbbell pullovers: 3x6

Friday

High bar squat: 121x6, 143x5, 154x4, 165x3x3
Bench press with double board (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lq9LsMb5kLM): 99x6, 132x5, 159x5x2, 176x3x2, 198x1-2
Elevated deadlift: 210x5, 242x5, 258x3x3
Neck press: 55x8x2, 77x5x2

Bent over rows: 3x8
Weighted push ups: 3x8
Dips: 3x8

Same here.  I am developing an addiction to dopamine, though.

I'm just starting out, and I have a horrible sadistic brute as a trainer, so I don't know what my typical routine is yet.  I am also trying to get over the idea of eating MORE calories and losing weight.  This beats the FUCK out of the treadmill.

Once I understand my routine, I will post it.  At the moment, it is by no means as extensive as yours.

Also, do you have any idea how hard it is to eat 50 grams of protien if you can't have red meat?   :lulz:

I'm usually in the gym for about 2,5 hours, taking at most a 3 minute break between sets.
The down side to suddenly finding myself aiming to compete at some point is the looming threat of injury, so there's a lot of pure technique training, especially in squats and deadlifts. I'm conisdering including the Olympic lifts from time to time too, as they look hellafun.

Also, supplements. Finding supplements that work and are legal in competitions is like finding a straw in a haystack. I did find some though.

They luckily have the most awesomely horrible names in the history of naming things.
Cannibal Inferno, Cannibal Ferox, Cannibal Permaswole.

Oh yeah. It's hard as hell even if red meat is an option. I use whey protein powder. I'm supposed to eat around 200 grams each day.

I'm doing about 45 minutes to one hour, 3 times a week, with 3 minute breaks between reps (though I gotta do the box during that time period).  I have no intention of competing, as that is what crippled my brother up.  I'm just trying to stay sexy.

I'm looking into supplements now, because 6 eggs in one sitting is pretty rough.

I'm looking into the hydrolicized whey powder.  I am supposed to put down 100 grams per day at this point, which is something like 12 eggs or 11 mushroom patties.  Which is ridiculous.  Who the hell can eat 11 burgers?

I buy my proteins in Sweden. Cheap, good quality and in bulk. Same with creatine and beta-alanine.

The pre-workouts and other assorted supplements I buy online.

As I don't plan to compete, I won't be bothering with a lot of the supplements.  I have my diet sheet, and I'll fill in the required areas.

The nice thing about the gym I attend is that even though it's a privately-run club, there is no pressure to compete.  Lots of pressure to shove heavy things into the air, but you don't get the feeling you're letting the side down by not going to competitions.  There is also a distinct lack of disdain for the noobs.

Well hello there.

My Saturday gym routines are in the capable hands of my brother in law. I'm on a three week rotation now, one week of chest/arms, one week of legs/upper back, and one week of shoulders/back. We do a mixture of freeweights and machine isolation 3 sets of 10 reps with 3 exercises for each muscle group. Every session is ended with a 3 sets of 20 leg lifts, 3 sets of 10/20 incline crunches or oblique medicine ball twists, 3 planks, and a one mile speed run (just broke the 7 minute mile two weeks ago WOO!). It usually takes 1.5-2 hours.

I hit the pavement and run 3.5 miles 3x weekly between gym sessions.

Roger I'd been hearing that a glass of chocolate milk after workouts is one of the best things you can do, and I can attest to feeling revitalized after having it myself. It'll help with the protein.

I've come to love the soreness. I've noticed significant gain in the two months I've been at it, as well as in my appearance.

You two have very different body types than my own, though. I keep seeing a sign for a free body fat percentage estimate at the gym and I want to take them up on it just to fuck with them.   :lulz:

It's the same at my gym. Nobody pressured me into competing, but my trainer said I had the potential to become very good, which is nice, i so I decided why the hell not.

Also, getting help and tips from the old guys who've been lifting heavy shit since the sixties/seventies is fucking awesome.

Oh, yeah.  It feels great.  And my principle problem with competing is that I've never been competitive at these sorts of things, but also because I already travel too much, and even a trip to Vegas (which is the nearest big competition) is too far if I don't have to go.  Thing is, the American Southwest is BIG and EMPTY, in a way that is hard to describe even to American East-coasters, and as a result it takes HOURS to get to any other cities.  And Tucson doesn't really have any competitions as far as I know.  Our city's principle sport is getting twisted on very dangerous drugs, you see.

And if I tried at this point to do Waffle's workout, I would come right apart at the seams.  Guts everywhere.

I'm terribly torn between wanting to lean out and becoming stronger.
I can do both, but I'm not terribly sure I have the stamina for the diet and conditioning work I have to do to accomplish that.

I never really had a desk job, but I've spent far too long on me arse. I really do wonder if I had taken up any sort of physical activity now if my back hadn't busted.

I'm very into this, though outside of this sort of thread I won't talk about it much (my brother has been a powerlifter for years and he NEVER SHUTS UP ABOUT IT).  But I do plan to take this to the wall, with respect to lean & strength.

It's easy.  All I have to do is force myself to say to Gary, when I arrive at the gym, "You can't smoke this".   :lulz:

Then the horrible begins.

Cardio 3 nights a week for 1 hr on max resistance and max incline. I rarely do weights anymore I'm enjoying the runner's high. I eat the most one to two servings of white meat a week. Most of my protein is from beans, soy, egg beaters, and wild rices, and grains.

Kept the weight I lost last year off and I'm waiting for my next dosage of thyroid to help me lose even more. Don't miss red meat one bit. Working on finding more foods that give me meat flavor.

I occasionally lift and post videos on facebook showing everyone I still got my bear strength, and I don't even lift.

When I get down to 300lb even I guess I'll start getting cut. I'm currently eating 1500 calories on weekdays and 1800 on weekends. Helps me from cheating.

Look into milk and soy protein powders Roger. They're easier to mix, and tend to taste less like shit. I despise Whey even that high filtered crap is terrible.

A cheap easy soy burger receipe is mix egg beaters, chopped onions, soy flour , salt, black pepper, and a pinch of basil then mold them into burger then fry them in light oil, or you can buy some of those frozen black bean burgers from Sams Club they taste like chili.

Once you get lean, or cut you have to eat non-shitty food which becomes BORING. Once you start slacking, good meals and missing sessions you'll undo months of progression in a 4-5 weeks.

I'd suggest just get bear strong. Something about knowing you can crush someone's head in with your hands brings all the girls to the yard.

It's an easy thing to forget to shut up about. I feel like it's all I'm doing. When i see old friends and they ask what i'm up to, my go-to response is "liftin' shit."

Yeah, but you have other interests, as do I.  Nor are you utterly self-absorbed.  My brother, though...

...He's why people hate lifters.  Seriously, I avoided this for 2 years because I was so put off by that shit.

True that.

I know a few of those myself. There is one dude who's just an occasional visitor at the gym, who usually trains with the national team. Had I met him before trying out powerlifting, I'd never have begun. He's the type of person who says to the kids that "The best lifters get to use the best equipment", (of course he says it when no adults can hear him).

Fuck this.  This needs to start again.  No more injuries.  I'm not doing weights till my rotator stops clicking.  Push-pull, hanging leg lifts and walking, now.

Avoiding super-sets till dopamine up-regulates a little, or I'm just fried.

No egg yolk till dinner.

Met-Rx makes me farty and bloaty.  Myoplex / EAS improves social functioning.

Would like to get some gaspari novadex xt...  Very lean.  No bloat

Then, expand push-pull to include weight-training.

Please leave my thread.

Something I wish I'd done when I started training was took progress photos, like once a week or something. Would have been a trip to watch skinny runt me, morph into superhero as an animated gif, once I got to the desired end result.

Just throwing that out there in case the idea appeals...

From what I've seen there's a lot of half-assery in terms of proper form in crossfit. But this particular CF gym is run by a dude that used to do Oly lifting at my club. He should know what the fuck he's doing.

Back under the weights yesterday.  I am finding that I can push a ridiculous amount of weight with my arms, while my legs (which are far more muscled) are essentially useless and weak.  This is kind of weird.

It also means every Friday is lower body day.   :horrormirth:

Well, that just means you have to bite the bullet and work those muscles, same as I have to work my abs and my upper legs.

Legs are weird that way. Even though they support your body, and are more muscular, they aren't necessarily "strong." I've always found that I can tone my arms usually faster than my legs. But like all things, they take time. My abs won't tone for shit. No matter what I do, I can't lose the couple more inches I want. The flubber remains. I can blame this on being a woman, or being hypothyroid, or always stressed, or just generally liking food too much, but the bottom line is that muscles are assholes, and they all want to be special snowflakes and demand different training from person to person.

Ab workouts - serious ones - are incredibly difficult.  The question is whether or not they're worth it.  2 inches won't kill you.

I find curling so boring, and not all attracted to the idea of having guns. Been mostly doing cardio and doing lower back machine.

I don't find it boring, because my trainer is a horrible sadistic brute.

"Are you bored?  MORE WEIGHT!"

I want to take up boxing once I drop to 300lbs. I demands lots of stamina, and I'm into the runner's high now.

Ever think of swimming laps?

Back under the weights yesterday.  I am finding that I can push a ridiculous amount of weight with my arms, while my legs (which are far more muscled) are essentially useless and weak.  This is kind of weird.

It also means every Friday is lower body day.   :horrormirth:

Fair enough. If you ever want to take the time to learn proper strokes (heheheheheh) it's a full body full stamina workout. I keep meaning to go signup at the local Y pool. With me blowing out my ankle last month I won't be seeing myself running safely for a while.

I'd really like to do some weight training, but I can't afford a gym (assuming I can even get over my hangups from previously joining gyms) and I don't think my partner would still find me attractive if I did so. (http://www.psmag.com/navigation/health-and-behavior/half-lifts-workout-says-social-class-85221/) She's also said as much when I discussed said article with her.

With a buzz cut and my shirt off my roommate says I look like a cancer patient, and I tend to agree. When I look at myself naked in a full length mirror I can't stop laughing. I have enough trouble not being underweight for my height and I don't exactly want to have to eat even more than I already do. I guess I'll have to settle for appearing to be 10 years younger than I actually am until the wrinkles and grey hair set in, or I when I land a job that pays a living wage so I can actually get access to the necessary assortment of weights.

And no, it's not such a great thing to have people think I'm a naive 20 something when I'm applying for a job that requires some life experience. It actually kind of sucks to constantly hear "OH YUO LOOK SO YOUNG FOR UR AGE, HEE HEE HAW HAW!"  :tgrr:

Interesting article, Net, thanks. I'd never really connected fitness types with socioeconomic status but it does make sense.

So if I'm both educated and perpetually broke, does that mean I can do poorly at both?  :lulz:

My problem is that if I don't do something to get in shape and stay there, I'll be dead before I'm 55.  As I am nearly 46 now, you might understand my concern.

I was getting into a pretty good weight lifting routine this winter.  I work an 8 day rotating schedule, so it doesn't make sense for me to do like a M,W,F type thing.

Each workout I would do 3 sets of the following:

squats
dead lift
planks
leg raises (for abs)
bent over row
bench press
shrugs
shoulder raises
curls

I would follow this schedule:

day 1 - add a couple pounds and do 5 reps each set
day 2 - day off (I hate to say "rest")
day 3 - do 7 reps each set
day 4 - day off
day 5 - do 10 reps each set
day 6 - day off
day 7 - day off

by the time i get to 10 reps on everything, it's pretty difficult to finish a lot of the sets, but adding weight and starting over at 5 reps seems to keep me from hurting myself.

I work out at home so there's never a spotter around, so I try to keep from hurting myself.

I just got too busy with projects this summer to keep it up though - but, I can attest that putting in egress windows - digging the holes by hand and busting out the block with a sledgehammer - is quite a workout.  I also put a deck on my house - dug those holes by hand, too - post hole diggers are a great upper body workout.  Since I framed my deck with 6x6 posts and 2x10 joists with 2x12 rim joists, I got to muscle a bunch of lumber around, too.  I also helped my dad build a pole barn - that's about a thousand trips up and down a ladder, so I have been getting pretty good exercise.

One more egress window to put in my basement and I'll be getting back at the weight lifting, I think.  I kinda miss it and although I never felt like mush after my workouts, I always felt lighter and stronger and I was surprised at how much weight I was able to add to my workouts without hurting myself using this approach.

I was starting to feel like I was hitting a wall with weight, though - and was thinking I should maybe drop a little weight and do a few weeks of 10 reps without increasing the weight.

I want to play too, so I'm starting my poor person's weight training regimen.

So far it's been a backpack full of books with waist and chest straps on while doing a few sets of push ups and squats. Then I do some kettlebellish cleans, which work surprisingly well considering the bulkiness of the pack.

I'm starting with about 30 pounds of books, but I'm going to have to find something heavier to put in there because it's not quite enough.

More reps with a low weight is a better way to start.  THEN raise the weight.

Also, dumbells are surprisingly cheap, and they can be used to work complimentary muscles so you don't wind up all lopsided.

Yeah, a guy your size, you'd need a pair of the following sizes:  10 lb, 15 lb, 20 lb.  You should also have something resembling a bench, but it's not entirely necessary.

The iron is not your friend.

Also, did the whole putting-plates-on-bars thing for the powerlifting meet this weekend. My glutes want to kill me. Two days of lifting plates on and off that fucking bar, and helping the lifters who failed to get it up to not be crushed. Some of these fuckers benched ( or tried to ) over 500 lbs. they were almost all in their fifties.

The most impressive, however, was a 63 years Oldham with Celebral Palsy who benched 140lbs.

For whatever reason, I was a total creampuff today.  I DID the workout, but I was struggling the whole time.

And it wasn't Monday's berserk workout, either, because I've felt fine since.  I was just the lazy.  But I did it anyway.

I use the deadlift for that. The Bench is my mortal enemy, and must be defeated.

On that note: my new bench program works as fuck. 11 lbs more in four weeks, as opposed to the 2 lbs gain during my last 12-week cycle with my old program.

Day Three of lifting. Standing Dips, Reverse Standing Dips. 12 sets of 30 @ 150lbs per side. I felt nothing, but a stomach ache. Cooldown by doing 2x 20 reps of Lat Pulldowns @ 160lbs. I felt nothing at all my feet kind of twitched when I was in the shower. I guess I'll lift tomorrow for bear strength.

I feel like I have been handed over to moob-hating Irish brutes.

I'm getting new bench exercises in a month or so. Gotta get my regular bench up to 100kgs (220 lbs) before dec. 20th.
I'm also getting a new squat and deadlift regime. Gonna try sumo deadlifts, too! FUNFUNFUN

My arms fell off an hour ago.

But I have decided that I am going to do this for the rest of my life, just so that I will leave an unreasonably heavy corpse for my descendents to deal with.

Hernias for the grandchildren.  Because they need to learn that life is hard.

Went for 70 pounds/hand on dumbbell press yesterday (31.something KG):

Set 1:  12
Set 2:  4
Set 3:  3
Set 4:  POTATO

:lulz:

Then worked down on 45 pounds for a while.  My arms are dead.  I am typing this with a rubber chicken.

Each set lists the number of repetitions I was able to do, lying flat on my back and shoving two 70 pound dumbbells in the air.

It's a personal best for me (before this I could manage a few reps of 60 pounds, which are now fairly easy.  It's amazing how much 20 extra pounds means).

I'm thinking shit-show for a bit.

Yep.  Even if your muscles can handle more, the connective tissue can't, so you take it slow.

There's treachery afoot.

Postscript: I'm training for my first marathon, and today I managed to still make my 5 mile with flatulence that would easily be mistaken as the 7 trumpets of Revelation. Turns out the class is only partly going to involve weight training. A lot of body weight/movement stuff instead. We are going to be working a lot of deadlift technique, which is one thing I'm looking forward to getting down.

It sure kicked my ass. But if I add a lap every time I swim I should be back to where I was in about 7 weeks. I have a microfiber towel so that I can just carry my whole swim kit in a ziploc bag in the bottom of my backpack.

No wonder I've gained so much weight since my surgery... I had to stop swimming at the time, and then I somehow just never got back to it. This should take care of a host of issues, including my blood pressure.

Round 2 today. I added 3 laps to my previous swim time, and swam for 20 minutes. I'll be sore tomorrow! If I can add 3 laps per session, I should be back up to a mile in no time.

I think there's also a neurological component to lifting.  That is, you can only try[\i] as hard as your brain and nerves will allow.

To put it another way, if you transplant a power lifter's brain into a pipsqueak's body, he/she could easily break bones or tear ligaments just by flexing.

If you mean that you can surpass the body's abilities by trying too hard, that's well-documented.

Yeah, I think there is a neurological component. Newbs neurons just won't fire hard enough, or activate enough fibers or what not.

Apparently, I was born without rear deltoids. Must be some kind of rare birth defect.

Seated Bent-Over Rear Delt Raise: 3 sets, 5 lbs(per arm), 7 reps. None of them really "counted".

I say 7 reps, but that's just the point where I started really feeling silly counting them.

Tried geared squats yesterday. It was so painful, I experienced what the fetishists and kinksters called sub drop.

I am terrible at squats.  So terrible that I won't discuss it until I get better at it.

Still. I am a glutton for punishment, so I'm trying geared deadlifts on friday.

I don't do gear.  I'm a bit of a puritan about that shit...If I can't do it raw, I can't do it.

But that's just a personal preference.  I don't run around telling people how to lift.

Dead lift 250 for 10
Squat "potato"
dumbbell press 100 for 3
inclined dumbbell press 70 for 5

Which is something like 125 kg.

Squats are still potato.

Wish there were a few proper trainers here. The last time I set foot in the gym here, there were three trainers, all busy with clients, all egging said clients on to "one more rep!" at the expense of good form. I did a few sets and got the hell out.

Kind of makes me wonder if the gym's owner would be open to hiring me on. You know, on the basis of uninjured customers are happier customers.

Then again, the MMA types that frequent the place might think it beneath them to be tortured trained by an aging, bespectacled fat bastard. Got to try it now that I think of it in those terms. Lulz to be had and SCIENCE to be done.

Imagine Shaquille O'Neal squished down to 5'9". That's what Koffi looks like, who runs the gym here. He looks me up and down, then laughs. Then he tells me he doesn't pay trainers. He just has them sign a contract releasing him from liability if someone they're training gets hurt. Then he tells me he'd be happy to put up a flyer for me on the board if I want to do that.

So now I get to draw up a flyer so I can subject unsuspecting people to my high school weights coach's program.  :lulz:

Sweet.

I did squats for the first time in 3 weeks on Monday. It went well. I work up to a single at 137,5 on my heavy squat days, and this was easy, eve after the tonsilitis and the drunkenness weeks.
I also tried sumo squats for the first time. My hamstrings are dead.

I also started doing dragon flags for abs, since I find sit ups to be deathly boring.

Only the negative movement so far though. My abs are melting.

would those of you that have a trainer (or training experience?) mind asking (or providing) some feedback regarding what i believe is called circuit training?

i'm not really looking to bulk up - just tone and shed fat.  i'm pretty satisfied with my current size and strength level - mainly just trying to shed the beer gut without giving up beer and i sure as shit fucking hate doing cardio.

what i've begun doing is, instead of doing 3 sets of 5 to 10 reps (depending on the excercise) and then moving on to the next exercise is doing 1 set of each excercise with no breaks in between.  i then do 3 "circuits" so, in the end, its still 3 sets of everything.  each muscle group gets a break, but I don't because i immediately move to the next exercise.

i've found it to definitely increase my sweat production and respiration -so it seems to be combining the benefits of weight training with the benefits of cardio (i fucking hate doing cardio)

another bonus to this style workout is that it shaves about 10 minutes off my workout time since i'm not taking breaks between sets.

for me, 10 minutes sometimes means the difference between "do i have time to work out today?"

1 circuit for me consists of:

squats
dead lift
shoulder shrugs
bent over row
bench press
crunches (20 reps here)
plank (1 minute on each side)
shoulder raises
curls

i do this 3 times per week.

i've read a lot of mixed opinions online but would appreciate some "real world" opinions

No, I don't even know what my max is.  I'm usually alone, so I try to do a weight that I can comfortably do 10 reps on the first set.  That way, I can stop at 5 or 7 reps on the 2nd or 3rd set if I feel I'm straining myself.

Sorry for butting in, this post got me reading about creatine.
http://www.webmd.com/vitamins-supplements/ingredientmono-873-CREATINE.aspx?activeIngredientId=873&activeIngredientName=CREATINE

Fromw what I read the main problem would be that creatine makes your muscles hold more water, drying out the rest of your body.
Short term you could pass out from dehydration.
Long term this could make your kidneys unhappy.

I do lines of creatine before I fuck the wife.
I have only read about oral intake so for knowledge about nasal intake you would have to ask others.

Since this is an exercise and health thread you will have to be more specific: how much creatine, how often do you take it, how long does your workout take, what techniques do you use, how often do you perform these techniques.

I read earlier that circuit training is very useful, do you do that with your wife or do you focus on one technique at a time?

There are reports of kidney damage with creatine use, such as interstitial nephritis; patients with kidney disease should avoid use of this supplement.[13] In similar manner, liver function may be altered, and caution is advised in those with underlying liver disease, although studies have shown little or no adverse impact on kidney or liver function from oral creatine supplementation.[16] In 2004 the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) published a record which stated that oral long-term intake of 3g pure creatine per day is risk-free.[17] A 2003 study on athletes who took creatine for 21 months, found no significant changes in markers of renal function;[18] a 2008 study on athletes who took creatine for 3 months, found no evidence of kidney damage during that time.[19]

Merely anecdotal, yes, but last winter I was doing some resistance training while drinking soy protein and creatine. Had my first kidney stone just a few months later. Soy is also a rich source of oxalate, which is what most kidney stones are made of. No idea what the oxalate levels are in the extract.

I am considering starting to lift. My lower body is crazy strong but my upper body could use something to strive against.

Where do I start? Do I just go to the gym and tell them that I want to lift?

It's that, or rock climbing.

Find a gym with a good PT.

That is right out. Absolutely not. I hate personal trainers with a burning passion and will accept the tutelage of one that stays the fuck away from me when not in immediate demand. I won't have some pushy fucktard hovering over me.

I have my choice of two gyms: the one at the University or 24-Hour Fitness. Obviously, the one at the University is the one I'll be using because fuck 24-Hour Fitness.

Now that that's settled, do I just go to the gym and tell them that I want to lift? Or should I just fuck it and go for rock climbing?

It's best made plain that you want instruction on form (If you do need such instruction, and if you don't know if you do or not, you do...On account of form is the difference between getting stronger and a permanent rotator injury), and not some dumbass hollering "ONE MORE REP".  You can have your iPod scream that at you if you need it, way cheaper.

The gym is better than rock climbing, I think.  Personal opinion, obviously.

Yes, I know I will need instruction on form, because like any physically rigorous sport, injury is a possibility.

Is there any reading, prep, or other information that I might find helpful?

Yes.  Tell them "powerlifting, but no intent to compete in the foreseeable future".

QuoteIs there any reading, prep, or other information that I might find helpful?

Not really, at least not that I've seen.  The real trick is finding a trainer that's worth a damn.  Many trainers are basically muscle heads.  What you want to do is find out what training they've had (A proper trainer will have a bag of anatomy courses under their belt), and then go slow.  If the trainer is crap, you'll know right away (and if it's questionable, talk to Waffle or myself).

And. Form vids on youtube is how I started out. Of course, getting form checked by people with 50 years of experience is better, but it works.
Also, this book (http://www.amazon.com/Strength-Training-Anatomy-3rd-Edition/dp/0736092269) is great.

Short workout today on account of the trainer being injured.

bench with the fat bar 270 lbs.  My previous best was 255 (275 on the olympic bar).  Next Monday, we go for 285 on the fat bar, and next month 300 on the olympic bar (136.5 Kg).

So, I'm up to four reps at 275.6 lbs in the squat, 182 lbs bench, and 330.7 lbs in the deadlift after the holidays. Planning on totalling at 1036.2 (363.8 squat, 231.5 bench, and 440.9DEATHlift (the metal name for it, obviously)  lbs at the next meet, which is either in october or december, depending on which one I choose to lift at.

Also, these new assistance exercises are murdering me. 20 power shrugs? D:

I gained 15 pounds of muscle in the year or so of weekly gym visits and regular outdoor runs. As a certifiable skinny fuck that's a lot. But my gym partner has moved on to his workplace gym and I have no drive to hit it solo. So I bought a pull up bar and am on every other day rotations with running of: 4 sets pushups, 4 sets lunges, 4 sets planks, and 4 sets pull ups. Been a pretty good whole body feeling so far, and already improvement in reps and form in a few sessions.

Well, the muscles in my right knee have recovered enough that I can do actual squats with no pain at all (except for the pain of, you know, doing squats).  Not much weight yet, but I can do 'em!

Then I promptly tweaked my lower right paraspinal muscles on 245 LB deadlifts.  Not injured, just sore.

It's worth noting that it was my 5th set of 5 deadlifts at that weight, which is a hell of an improvement over my previous working sets.

You should get that.  I've just now gotten to the point where the muscles around my bad knee will support it, so proper SKVAUTS for 185 LB for 5.  Now it's just a matter of improving.

How big is your meet?

That's awesome, Roger.

The meet's tiny. In gaining 11 lbs to go up a weight class, and get a gold medal. lol

I never did start weightlifting. Perhaps I will add it to my Friday schedule, to make going downtown worth it.

I am riding my bike downtown now. It's way better than the bus, except I can't read during my commute.

And you might have to punch the tram.

For what you're doing, and the time you have available, bike riding is a thing.   Weight lifting needs 3 days a week.

We move to 4 days next week.  4th day is lower back.  Because being able to drive home isn't actually important.   :lulz:

It's not getting 3 days a week because I just don't have time for that. But I do put on muscle like someone with an IGF-1 mutation, so I will probably get the results I want with once or maybe twice a week.

She was an extremely muscular child from infancy, with a sixpack by the time she was 18 months. She's still crazy muscular, and I was also very muscular as a child and build muscle bulk at an unusually rapid rate. Probably some minor mutation.

I kind of envy you about the IGF-1 thing.

I'm starting to understand the desire to juice up. I'm not going to do it though, but I do understand those who do.

Also: I'm now squatting 300 pounds without spotters. A nice little milestone.

Nice.

I am now able to squat, period.  There's enough muscle around my right kneecap.

Only 185 LBs, but that's better than not being able to do body-only  bench squats a year ago.

I naturally have the figure of a stick insect, so I've recently I've taken working out my arms to approach the size and shape of a regular human.

I'm starting with ten pound weights. I'm working my way up.  :lulz:

Did a fairly OK comp on friday.

Missed all my third attempts, but still won the gold medal (don't ask how many I competed against).

Ended up with
155kg (342lbs) squat, 100kg (220lbs) bench, and 185kg (408lbs) deadlift for a 440kg (970lbs) total.

Of these, the deadlift was my only actual PR. The bench and squat were comp PRs though.

Bench is now 315 LBS/142 KG.

That's the Olympic bar and six 45 pound plates (3 per side, not 6 per side).

In related news, my arms are swollen meatbags full of poison and sickness.

Your bench is almost as much as my squat.
Tested for maxes yesterday.
237 bench (107,5 kg)
353 squat (160 kg)

Testing dreadlift tomorrow.
Xmas meet on the 19th. Should manage a 1000lbs total.

Are you going to post pics from the meet?

I have built up the muscle around my right knee to where I can now do squats.  Not heavy squats, I think I maxed so far at 185 LBs, and I'll probably never hit big weights or the damn knee will explode and take out everyone in the gym.

I'm up to doing sets of 325 LB deadlifts, and I'm going to try to max at 400 LB this Friday.
