Indeed!  I mean, the very name "Mindless Self Indulgence" is occasionally the best descriptor we have for what we're doing.

I believe the preferred irony would be the discovery that no, actually, the flying around in spaceships and being robotic batteries was the false existence.  Possibly a metaphor for religion?

Nobody cares about my 20 year old drug addicts. They don't care about themselves. The prosecutors just want to lock them up. The judges want to lock them up too, to get their files closed. Their families are in jail, or dead, or in Oklahoma. I ask them what they want and they shrug. I ask them why they're killing themselves, and they shrug.

I talked to one today. She was probably cute a couple of years ago before her first offense. Now her mouth has started to harden and she wants it known that she can handle the six months the state wants to give her. Because, you know, she's tough. Just one little tear in the corner of her eye when I talked about a couple of meth addicts older than her who I've known, and the path they're on and how she can do better. But we both pretnded that one tear wasn't there.

I don't know if this still fits the analogy/allegory/whatever, but I'd like to point out just how many people like to have it both ways.  Oooh, their lives are better 'cause they get to fuck once in a while instead of "just" masturbating, but look closer and you'll see they've carefully structured the fucking so that it too achieves little in concrete terms.

Yeah, this vaguely affects my cousin Danny, since he keeps a blog and it's probably on MySpace rather than something like LiveJournal.

But srsly, even if he wants to keep updating, all he needs to do is give someone else the keys and email entries.  Email sites aren't blocked.

If we're actually keeping score, I turn 32 next week.

I can only imagine so, but y'know, I can't help but think this was a distinct danger when he first even signed up for the military.

To be fair, the access is only blocked from Department of Defense computers, it doesn't prevent them from sending email (so, as a friend pointed out, Danny could email somebody messages to post on his blog), and there are occasionally other resources available such as Internet cafes.

Personally, I think love leads to fear leads to ass-beating.

Example: Your child starts wandering away from your side and comes very close to stepping off the sidewalk into a busy street.  Had that been me, my mother would have seized me immediately and swatted me on the hand or buttocks, and probably yelled also.  This is because her love for me turned into stark terror at the idea of my getting hit by a car, so she wanted to condition me *against* stepping out into the street in the future.  And she used pain infliction to set up that conditioning.

I have no insights on whether this is a useful thing, or an effective thing.  But I am pretty sure on the "Love -> Fear -> Ass-beating" train of thought.  Heck, didn't we have a thread once about Fear and Desire (Love) being looped together?  Pretty easy to switch from one to the other.
